      Abstract: The guest editors of this special issue provide readers with a unique mix of perspectives to develop a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding Moore's law and the prospects for continued exponential growth in the coming era of computing. The field is indeed too large for a thorough treatment of all its aspects within one special issue. Nevertheless, they believe that the insights that can be gained by including different perspectives on technology, science, engineering, and economics from those who are recognized leaders in their disciplines should complement and possibly even extend other treatments of the subject.

      Abstract: The end of Moore's law may be the best thing that has happened in computing since the beginning of Moore's law. Confronting the end of an epoch should enable a new era of creativity by encouraging computer scientists to invent new biologically inspired paradigms, implemented on emerging architectures, with hybrid circuits and systems that combine the best of scaled silicon CMOS with new devices, physical interactions and materials.

  • A Neuromorph's Prospectus

      Abstract: As transistors shrink to nanoscale dimensions, trapped electrons--blocking "lanes" of electron traffic--are making it difficult for digital computers to work. In stark contrast, the brain works fine with single-lane nanoscale devices that are intermittently blocked (ion channels). Conjecturing that it achieves error-tolerance by combining analog dendritic computation with digital axonal communication, neuromorphic engineers (neuromorphs) began emulating dendrites with subthreshold analog circuits and axons with asynchronous digital circuits in the mid-1980s. Three decades in, researchers achieved a consequential scale with Neurogrid--the first neuromorphic system that has billions of synaptic connections. Researchers then tackled the challenge of mapping arbitrary computations onto neuromorphic chips in a manner robust to lanes intermittently--or even permanently--blocked by trapped electrons. Having demonstrated scalability and programmability, they now seek to encode continuous signals with spike trains in a manner that promises greater energy efficiency than all-analog or all-digital computing across a five-decade precision range.

      Abstract: Moore's law in the semiconductor industry came to mean regular, predictable introductions of new manufacturing technology that enabled denser electronics. Adoption of new manufacturing technology, and its effect on silicon wafer-processing costs, determined how rapidly transistor manufacturing costs declined. In recent years, both cost decline rates and other economically valuable technical benefits flowing from use of the newest chip-making technology seem to have substantially diminished.

  • The End of Moore's Law: A New Beginning for Information Technology

      Abstract: The insights contained in Gordon Moore's now famous 1965 and 1975 papers have broadly guided the development of semiconductor electronics for over 50 years. However, the field-effect transistor is approaching some physical limits to further miniaturization, and the associated rising costs and reduced return on investment appear to be slowing the pace of development. Far from signaling an end to progress, this gradual "end of Moore's law" will open a new era in information technology as the focus of research and development shifts from miniaturization of long-established technologies to the coordinated introduction of new devices, new integration technologies, and new architectures for computing.

  • How to Successfully Overcome Inflection Points, or Long Live Moore's Law

      Abstract: The combination of Moore's law and Dennard's scaling laws constituted the fundamental guidelines that provided the semiconductor industry with the foundation of a technically and economically viable roadmap until the end of the previous century. During this time, the transistor evolved from bipolar to PMOS to NMOS to CMOS. However, by the mid-1990s it was clear that fundamental physical limits of the MOS transistor were going to halt Dennard's scaling by 2005, at best. Eventually the power consumed by a single IC, under the relentless growth in the number of transistors and the continuous increase in operating frequency, pushed the IC temperature beyond reliable limits. Several new memory devices operating on completely new physics principles have been invented in the past 10 years and have already demonstrated that computing performance can be substantially improved by monolithically integrating several of these new heterogeneous memory layers on top of logic layers powered by a combination of CMOS and "new switch" transistors. This new phase, called 3D power scaling, will continue to support increase in transistor count at Moore's law pace well into the next decade.

  • Double Hashing Sort Algorithm

A double hashing methodology first collects statistics about element distribution and then maps between elements of the array and indexes based on the knowledge collected during the first hashing.

  • Undergraduate Computational Physics Education: Uneven History and
           Promising Future

      Abstract: While some physics educators have included computing in courses or have developed specialized courses for over 50 years, computational physics education has only slowly made inroads into the broader physics education community. Even now, when computation is arguably more important than ever in physics research and applications, it's rare that a physics department offers more than a single course in the topic to its undergraduate students. There have been several times over the years when interest in a more global approach to computational physics education has surged, only to subside without attaining the goal that computing finally take an essential role in the education of undergraduate physicists. The author reviews some of the history of computational physics education, briefly discusses his experience with the program at Illinois State University, and suggests some direction for the future.

  • Cancer's Big Data Problem

      Abstract: The US Department of Energy (DOE) has partnered with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to use DOE supercomputers to aid in the fight against cancer by building sophisticated models based on data available at the population, patient, and molecular levels. Through a three-year pilot project called the Joint Design of Advanced Computing Solutions for Cancer (JDACSC), four participating national laboratories--Argonne, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge--will focus on three problems singled out by the NCI as the biggest bottlenecks to advancing cancer research.

  • The 4th International Workshop on Software Engineering for HPC in
           Computational Science and Engineering

      Abstract: Despite the increasing demand for utilizing high-performance computing (HPC) for CSE applications, software development for HPC historically attracted little attention from the software engineering (SE) community. Paradoxically, the HPC CSE community has increasingly been adopting SE techniques and tools. Indeed, the development of CSE software for HPC differs significantly from the development of more traditional business information systems, from which many SE best practices and tools have been drawn. The workshop summarized in this column, the fourth in the series to be collocated with the Supercomputing conference series, examined two main topics: testing and tradeoffs. Through presentations of work in this area and structured group discussions, the participants highlighted some of the key issues, as well as indicated the direction the community needs to go. In particular, there is a need for more high-quality research in this area that we can use as an evidence base to help developers of CSE applications change practice and benefit from advances in software engineering.
