  • Comparison of Hydrus-1D to Thermal Dispersion Model for Water-heat
           Transport in a Semi-arid Region of Tunisia

    • Abstract: Background and Objectives: In most studies of simulating water and solute transport in the unsaturated soils, soil temperature is considered constant and the temperature of the water that infiltrates the soil is neglected. In main objective of this study was to examine the comparison between a classical soil physics model (Hydrus-1D) and a thermal dispersion model was done, which takes into account the temperature of the water in soil, is carried out in a semi-arid region of Tunisia. Materials and Methods: Monitoring of soil water content and soil temperature was conducted during a typical agricultural season. Two models were used; a thermal dispersion model and the Hydrus-1D model for the simulation of the variation of the water content and the temperature in the topsoil at 30 cm in depth. Results: The simulated values were close to the measured one. Thus, the modeling results are quite satisfactory for both models. However, the thermo-dispersive model has shown better results since it takes into account the temperature of the water infiltrating in the soil. Conclusion: Both models can be powerful tools for water management in field conditions.

  • Chemical Composition of Six Grass Species (Poaceae sp.) from Protected
           Forest Range in Northern Bulgaria

    • Abstract: Background and Objectives: The forage grasses shows considerable variations in yield, morphological characteristics and feeding value at grazed, ungrazed and different ecological conditions. For this reason, these characters of the same species should be known under different ecological conditions. The aim of the present investigation was to determine the some forage quality traits six dominant cool-season forage grasses grown as naturally in the protected forest range at northern Bulgaria ecological conditions. Materials and Methods: Samples were collected (approximately 450 g biomass) for two years at full bloom stage, which were chosen not damaged by biotic and abiotic factors. Whole plant samples were sterilized with 2% sodium hypochlorite for 15 min and washed distilled water three times. Potassium (%), phosphorus (%), calcium (%), magnesium (%), crude protein (%), acid detergent fiber (%) and neutral detergent fiber (%) were determined in these dried (at 55̊C for 48 h) samples. The crude protein content dry matter (%) was determined by the micro-Kjeldahl method. All samples were analyzed in triplicate. Results: The highest crude protein (14.23%), calcium (3.88%), potassium (3.22%) ratios were determined in smooth brome, whereas the lowest phosphorus ratio (0.22%) was found in same plant. Sheep fescue produced more ADF (33.78%) and NDF (62.10%) ratios than other species. The magnesium ratio ranged from 0.26-0.28%. The mineral contents of those are generally adequate to meet the needs of livestock. Conclusion: Therefore, sheep fescue, red fescue, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, orchardgrass and smooth brome can be grazed to obtain mineral, fiber and crude protein contents in similar ecological conditions of the world.

  • Protective Role of Neuronal PAS Domain Protein 3 NPAS3 Gene in the
           Survival of Human Brain Stem Cell

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Neuronal PAS domain protein 3 (NPAS3) is one of the basic helix-loop-helix (Bhlh) transcription factor superfamily members. It is mainly expressed in human brain. Its disruption can result in the occurrence of many diseases, such as schizophrenia. However, the function of NPAS3 is still unknown in human brain stem cell. In this study, the role of NPAS3 was evaluated in cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle regulation and cell differentiation. Materials and Methods: Using trypan blue, methylene blue, MTS and BrdU methods, the experiments of cell viability and cell proliferation were performed respectively. Using SubG1 and Annexin V/Propidium iodide FAC analysis, cell apoptosis and cell cycle were investigated. Eventually, using immunofluorescent cytochemistry, cell differentiation was evaluated. Results: It was shown that a lack of NPAS3 expression significantly decreased the viability and the proliferation and induced more cells to undergo apoptosis, compared to the control cell line. Furthermore, a knockdown of NPAS3 expression induced a decrease of cells in the S phase of cell cycle. Finally, it was discovered that the capacity of cell differentiation was declined in a lack of NPAS3 expression, when compared to the control cell line. Conclusion: With the current findings, it is concluded that human brain stem cell is sensitive to the level of NPAS3 expression and hence only an optimal level is mandatory to mediate normal cellular process.

  • FT-IR and FT-Raman Spectroscopic Analyzes of Indeno Quinoxaline Derivative

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: The single crystal of ethyl 6'-cyano-7'-phenyl-1',6',7',7a' tetrahydro-3'H-spiro[indeno[1,2-b] quinoxaline-11,5'-pyrrolo [1,2-c] thiazole-6'-carboxylate (ECPTSIPTC) was crystallized by slow evaporation method after synthesis of compound. The main objective of the present study was to analyze complete vibration spectra of ECPTSIPTC compound through the FT-IR and FT-Raman techniques. Materials and Methods: Indeno quinoxaline, thioproline, ethyl cyano acetate, benzaldehyde, ethyl acetate and chloroform were used to grow the single crystal of title compound which were purchased from Sigma Aldrich company through local scientific companies in Tamil Nadu, India. The slow evaporation technique was employed to grow needle shaped ECPTSIPTC crystal using the chloroform as a solvent. Results: The vibrational spectra were recorded at room temperature using the FT-IR and FT-Raman spectrometers in the wavelength range 4000-400 cm–1. The optical property was performed by double beam spectrophotometer in the wavelength range 200-1100 nm. Conclusion: The FT-IR, FT-Raman vibrational spectral studies confirmed the various functional groups present in the title compound. The optical property of the title compound shows that the grown crystal has high transparency in the entire visible region and the energy gap was found to as 4.8 eV. Due to the wide applications of title compound in biological and pharmaceutical fields, it was considered for study in this present work.

  • Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Use among Psychiatric
           Patients in Northwest Nigeria

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: There has been a reported increase in the use of complementary and alternative medicine among patients generally, a potential risk of non-compliance and interaction which may affect outcome when concomitantly used with orthodox medicine. Mental disorders are highly prevalent in both the developed and the developing world with hundreds of millions of people suffering from psychiatric morbidity. The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence and determinants of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) use among psychiatric patients. Materials and Methods: The study was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out among psychiatric outpatients in two tertiary hospitals in Sokoto state north-western Nigeria (the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) Sokoto and Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital (FNPH) Kware), between February and May 2014. An interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect the data on socio-demographic, clinical and CAM use variables. Data was extracted and analysis was done using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 18.0. Results: A lifetime CAM use and for psychiatric disorders of 64.8 and 53.8% with only about a third current users and majority of the respondents found to have used herbal drinks and prayers in UDUTH and FNPH, respectively. Although a small proportion of the respondents preferred CAM to orthodox medications in both hospitals, however about one third of the respondents spent only 1,000 Nigerian Naira on CAM in UDUTH and FNPH. Majority of the study population in both hospitals were within the age bracket of 21-40 years. Age, gender, duration of onset of illness and cost were some of the socio-demographic determinants that influence the use of CAM in this study. Conclusion: In this study, prevalence of CAM use was high among psychiatric patients. Age, gender, disease duration and cost are part of the determinants of CAM use.

  • Remote Sensing and GIS Based Forest Fire Vulnerability Assessment in
           Dachigam National Park, North Western Himalaya

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Dachigam National Park in Kashmir, India is the only habitat in the world to critically endangered species, Kashmir Stag (Cervus hanglu). One of the reasons of its dwindling population has been associated with the frequent fires that occur in dachigam national park. Besides, the forest fires have also been associated with ecological disturbance in the area. This study assessed the forest fire vulnerability of this area using remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) in order to prioritize the area into different forest fire vulnerability zones. Materials and Methods: The data used included, (1) Advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer, digital elevation model (ASTER GDEM, 30 m), (2) Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) LISS-III data (23.5 m), (3) Survey of India (SOI) topographical maps of 1967 (1:50000 scale) and (4), Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) fire product. These datasets were used to generate topographic, land use; vegetation and other biophysical parameters to classify the study area into four fire vulnerability zones using GIS based multicriteria analysis model. Results: It was found that out of the total 164.55 km2 area of the park, 24.95 km2 (15.16%) of area falls in very high vulnerability zone, 89.67 km2 (54.49%) of area falls in high vulnerability zone, 44.51 km2 (27.05%) of area falls in medium vulnerability zone, whereas 5.42 km2 (3.29%) of area falls in low vulnerability zone. The results were validated with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-Radiometer (MODIS) satellite-based fire information product and the observational data. Conclusion: The study concluded that more than 50% area of the national park is very highly vulnerability to forest fires. In this context, the study shall guide in mitigating the causes behind the forest fire in the area through proper planning and management to minimize their frequency.

  • Design, Fabrication and Testing of a Manually Operated Locust Bean Cubing

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Cubing is a process of consolidating bulk agricultural products to allow precise sizing prior to packaging and marketing. This research was undertaken to develop a locust bean cubing machine. Materials and Methods: The machine was designed to cube 2 kg of fermented locust beans with the help of a piston-connecting rod arrangement, as a conveying mechanism. A handle attached to the connecting rod provides the drive and force required for cubing and the resultant piston speed was computed empirically. Results: The results showed that the machine required a piston speed and pressure of 33 m sec–1 and 25.1 kN m–2, respectively. Also, the machine was able to produce cubed locust beans of an approximate size of 0.06 m2. Conclusion: Thus, the cubing of locust beans condiment can be successfully achieved with the help of this machine.
