  • Existence of Human Beta Defensin-1 Peptide on Periodontal Disease: An
           Updated Review Based on Case-control and Cross-sectional Studies

    • Abstract: Background: Recently, several studies have tried to reveal the existence of Human Beta Defensin-1 (HBD-1) peptide in periodontal disease. However, the result of this interaction is still unclear and erratic. An analysis study from all reports from different sources was performed to evaluate and clarify these inconsistent results. Materials and Methods: Electronic search was conducted through several online databases (Google Scholar, Science Direct, PUBMED, NCBI and Cochrane.org). Articles written in english up to October, 2016 were involved in this analysis. Outcome and significant relationship amongst this peptide and periodontal status were analyzed. Results: Positive and negative findings data concerning the existence of HBD-1 in periodontal tissue linked to inflammation were found and investigated. Interestingly, localization of HBD-1 was found in oral stratified epithelium, sulcular epithelium but not in junctional epithelium. This issue was critical because junctional epithelium is well-known as port of entry for bacterial invasion and manifestation in gingivitis and periodontitis. Conclusion: Its existence was detected in both healthy and inflamed gingival tissue, but the level was varied upon different stage. Both case control and cross-sectional studies revealed conflicting findings. The HBD-1 gene polymorphism may serves as one of the reasons of these inconsistent findings.

  • Low-cost Biodiesel Production

    • Abstract: Use of fossil fuel after about 200 years of its dominance the world’s primary source of energy has caused many environmental problems of which increase in air pollution and climate change are the major ones. Biodiesel production from microalgae is a renewable and bio-friendly source of energy recognized worldwide than fossil fuel. Unfortunately, the major challenge hindering biodiesel production at pilot scale is the high cost of production. This study, therefore, discusses some important steps taken to lower the cost of biodiesel production which includes a choice of lipid extraction methods, biomass drying methods, biodiesel conversion methods and choice of cultivating media. The cheap and effective method of lipid extraction, biomass drying and biodiesel conversion was identified and discussed. The use of natural media such as Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) for the cultivation of microalgae to produce biomass, which can be used as feedstock for biodiesel production was highlighted. The identification of the major strategies for up-scaling biodiesel production is a step forward in making biodiesel production economically viable.

  • Effects of Mix Vegetation and Root Shear Strength Grown on Carbonaceous
           Shale

    • Abstract: Background: Carbonaceous shale is one of the common rock types in Malaysia. The most common types of landslides in Malaysia were happened on the cut slope before the construction of highway. Brachiaria ruziziensis and Colopogonium mucunoides were used as the mix vegetation to investigate the effect of chemical amendments on plant growth and root shear strength relationship. Objective: The objective of this study: (1) To investigate the effect of compound fertilizer nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK), NPK+Ground Magnesium Limestone (GML) (NGL), NPK+GML+foliar fertilizer (Vita-Grow™) (NGF) and control (Ctrl) and (2) To determine the soil shear strength, biomass and root growth. Materials and Methods: The soil samples were analyzed for pH, Total Nitrogen (TN), Soil Organic Carbon (SOC), available phosphorus, exchangeable Al, Ca, Mg and K and trace nutrients (Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn). Results: The carbonaceous shale was low in pH, total N, soil organic carbon, extractable P, basic cations (Ca, Mg and K) and micronutrients (Fe, Cu and Zn). Both P and Ca/Mg were low indicating inherent infertility and chemical constraints for root developments. The dry matter yield, root length and root weight of Brachiaria ruziziensis and Colopogonium mucunoides were increased significantly against NGF treatment. The increased of plant top and root dry weight treated with NGF were 26 and 38%, respectively, compared to the other treatments. The significant root shear strength relationship indicates that root enhanced shear strength by reducing the cohesion and increased the angle of internal friction component. The shear strength analysis from the direct shear test method is to determine the shear strength from the plotted graph. The shear strength analysis showed that NGF treatment was having high shear strength in 5.4, 10.9 and 16.3 and normal stress in 54, 109 and 163 kN m–2. Rapid vegetation growth observed within a 5 months period demonstrated that nutrient and lime application effectively ameliorated chemical constraints to plant growth. Conclusion: The plant mix species treated with NPK+GML+foliar fertilizer (NGF) indicated higher shear strength, dry matter yield and root densities in all layers.

  • Wood Deterioration of Cooling Tower Structure at Geothermal Power Plant

    • Abstract: Background and Objectives: Wooden cooling tower structure in Star Energy Geothermal (Wayang Windu) Ltd’s Power Plant was built in 1998 and it is operating since 2000. The wood is exposed to wet and hot environment during cooling tower operation, thus the physical and chemical degradation should be evaluated. Materials and Methods: Wood were taken from mainframe component of cooling tower, which represented the exposed to sunlight and the shadowed one. The density and chemical content degradation were measured to estimate the deterioration rate of the component. Results: Two species are used for cooling tower mainframe and non-mainframe component, namely redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menzieesi). Since the impact of water sprinkle and water flow friction to the wood member, the wood density has degraded. In combination with ultraviolet sunray radiation and eroding wind, it significantly pawed the surface so that douglas fir and redwood density has been decreasing until 2.5 and 2.0 mm depth, respectively, for 15 years cooling tower operation. Extractives in the cell wall is leaching so that the extractive content in outer layer is less than in the center of wood. Extractive content in surface layer of redwood (0-2 mm depth) and douglas fir (0-6 mm) are significantly less than control. The cell wall in the surface has chemically deteriorated because of weathering so it was more easily diluted in NaOH 1%, especially in the first layer (0-2 mm depth). Lignin content in the first layer of all samples are less than in the center. The preservative retention was also measured for each depth and it is found that CCB is bounded well to the cell wall. The preservative concentration in the first layer is still higher than the center. Conclusion: After 15 years exposed to cooling tower environment, physical and chemical properties of mainframe component of wooden cooling tower in geothermal power plants are degraded.

  • Modeling of a Spray of Diesel Fuel with Dissolved Liquefied Natural Gas

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Using Natural Gas (NG) for combustion process modification in compression ignition engines is considered to be a promising method due to its high volumetric efficiency, high thermal efficiency and low emissions. However, the natural gas has a penalty in terms of how to be involved in a combustion process due to its high auto-ignition temperature and lower cetane number. This study is a numerical investigation of the steady spray characteristics of diesel fuel containing dissolved natural gas. Materials and Methods: The simulation was carried out using ANSYS fluent software and a standard k-ε model was chosen with heat transfer condition at 300 K. The effect of natural gas concentration of 0, 5, 10 and 15% by mass in the diesel fuel on the spray characteristics for a typical diesel engine was studied numerically. A high pressure common rail injector with pressure of 200, 500 and 600 bar was investigated. Results: The results showed that the spray tip velocities increased with the increase in the natural gas concentration and injection pressure, while the spray cone angle of diesel-NG were smaller compared to that of pure diesel at the same conditions. Conclusion: The K-ε model of turbulence was successfully used to evaluate the spray characteristics and the results were compared to the some of the experimental data.

  • A Variable-step-size Block Predictor-corrector Method for Ordinary
           Differential Equations

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Over the years, block predictor-corrector method has been limited to predicting and correcting methods without further use. Predictor-corrector method possesses other attributes that utilize the Principal Local Truncation Error (PLTE) to design a suitable step size, tolerance level and control error. This study examined a variable-step-size block predictor-corrector method for solving first-order Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). Materials and Methods: The combination of Newton’s backward difference interpolation polynomial and numerical integration methods were applied and evaluated at some selected grid points to formulate the block predictor-corrector method. Nevertheless, this process advances to generate the PLTE of the block predictor-corrector method after establishing the order of the method. Results: The numerical results were shown to demonstrate the performance of the variable step-size block predictor-corrector method in solving first-order ODEs. The complete results were incurred with the aid of Mathematica 9 kernel for Microsoft windows (64 bit). Conclusion: Numerical results showed that the variable step-size block predictor-corrector method is more effective and perform better than existing methods in terms of the maximum errors at all tested tolerance levels as well as designing a suitable step size to control error.
