  • Effect of Pretreatment on Electroplating of Ni-Co Substrate Contaminated
           with Gold

    • Abstract: Background: The Ni-Co alloy is one of the crucial substrate in electronic industries. However, the substrate is contaminated with gold which is transformed to gold oxide during heat treatment, thereby resulting poor coating on the substrate during electroplating and inefficient solderability. Materials and Methods: In this study, the effect of different substrate preparation parameters before electroplating was investigated. Apart from that, the steps of surface preparation were also modified. The study was conducted in the process line using actual methods of the electroplating process and the electroplating equipment/apparatus and the substrate being used in electronic industry. The materials used were contaminated Ni-Co substrate, which was electroplated with pure tin to form a coating on the substrate. Different types of acid was used as descale medium. Results: The investigation with modified electroplating parameter and modified existing descale parameter did not exhibit any significant improvement of the electroplated film adhesion. However, the modified precleaning steps exhibited significant improvement in adhesion of coating on the substrate surface and the rejection of substrate was completely eliminated. Conclusion: The variation of precleaning parameters using standard descale acid and electroplating parameters did not resolve the poor adhesion of electroplating film on the Ni-Co substrate. However, the modified precleaning steps with new descale acid provided appropriate coating of tin on substrate surface during electroplating. The non-adhesion issue was completely eliminated and efficient solderability was achieved. It was found that with standard substrate preparation steps but variation of electroplating parameters could not eliminate the defects formation. However, modified precleaning with new descale acid completely eliminated the non-adhesion problem. There were no defects even at the lower level of electroplating parameters. Thus, the material and power consumption during electroplating were reduced. Highly efficient solderability was achieved, thereby, eliminating the rejection of substrate to be used in electronic devices completely. Hence, it can be said that the reliability of the electronic devices was enhanced and the process became cost effective.

  • Parameterization of the Downward Long Wave Radiation under Clear-sky
           Condition in Baghdad, Iraq

    • Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of seven downward long wave radiation models under clear-sky condition and to propose a locally modified equation. Methodology: The observed vapor pressure and air temperature data, downward long wave radiation and the atmospheric parameters were measured within the period, from 1st October, 2014 to 31st September, 2015 at a solar radiation station installed at the experimental site in Baghdad, Iraq. Results: The comparative statistics for the performance of the downward long wave radiation model calculations during day-time and night-time have shown that the parameterizations have the best results compared to the measured data. The locally proposed equation showed errors not greater than 1.1%, in comparison with the measured values, the models were used for estimating the apparent emissivity of the locally calibrated atmosphere. The percentage mean relative error and the root square errors obtained from calibrated equations were equal to 5.9 and 1.4%, 28.3 and 7.3 W m–2 for Idso and Jackson, Sugita and Brutsaert equations, respectively. Conclusion: It was found that the errors obtained basically reduced with the standardization performed and those calculations of the downward long wave radiation with the same output results are far more accurate than those made with the calibrations originally proposed. Finally, the locally examined equation can be used to estimate downward long wave energy, needed as input to most agricultural and hydrological models in some regions of Iraq, where this parameter is not measured.

  • Study on Selected Parameters of Groundwater Quality Based on Different
           Tides, East Coast of Terengganu, Malaysia

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Most of the population along the Terengganu coast and other states in the East coast of Peninsular are dependent on the groundwater resource. As a result of continuous use, some of the wells are contaminated by seawater intrusion, especially during low tide. This study aimed are to determine the water quality in spatial and temporal variations on different tides and to investigate the impact of saltwater intrusion on each sampling well. Methodology: A groundwater quality study was carried out at 13 well sampling stations along the East coast of Terengganu. Each station is located along the coast with distance 38-135 m from the sea, the first sampling was July, 2015 represent for dry season and was repeated on January, 2016 represent for wet season. The eight parameters are Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), salinity, pH, turbidity, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), chloride and other parameter is depth to groundwater level. Groundwater samples were obtained from each well by using Eijelkamp Advanced Peristaltic Pump. Source of variation of these parameters were identified by using the Principle Component Analysis (PCA). Results: The result shows that three water quality parameters EC, salinity and chloride have close related to sea water intrusion during low tide. Distribution of DO relatively low and four other parameters such as turbidity, TSS, TDS and pH have normal concentration during the study carried out. Conclusion: The St. M2 was recorded as the deepest groundwater level (7.9 m) while St. B3 was the shallowest level (2.49 m). The PCA analyses on low and high tides data revealed 3 possible sources that influence the water quality pollution which are saline water contamination, tide inducing factor and anthropogenic activities. The most affected sampling wells due to saltwater contamination are B1, B3, B4 and KT1.

  • Voice Controlled Energy Management System

    • Abstract: Background: Home automation system has been around for more than a decade. The main concept is to form a network connecting the electrical and electronic appliances in a house. This is an emerging technology, which has changed the way people live. But still none of the companies have been able to establish it as a popular technology as it is difficult to install and use and is not customized for household customers. Materials and Methods: This study proposes a Voice Controlled Energy Management System (VEMS) which will allow people to control household devices at home using wireless devices based on user dependent commands for enhanced security. Results: This study also monitors the total power consumption and transmits the data to the personal computer and day ahead and yearly forecast is computed using neural network, statistics and regression models. Conclusion: The main conclusion of this study is to control all the components through wirelessly and control it as per user demand also power consumption is recorded and calculated the total power consumption in an every year.

  • An Extended Kalman Filter Algorithm for a PMSM: Experimental Results

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: In this study, a fifth-order Discrete-time Extended Kalman Filter (DEKF) approach is introduced for on-line estimation of speed, torque and rotor position in a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM). Methodology: In order to verify the effectiveness of the estimation, the DEKF scheme has been implemented and validated in real-time on a test bench, which is composed of a synchronous machine, a powder brake completed by current and voltage sensors. Results: The satisfying experimental results carried out on a 1.6 kW PMSM demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed DEKF against measurement noises and perturbations. Conclusion: The interesting results obtained on the PMSM show that this estimation method can be to use for the reconstitution of the speed and position in the industrial applications.

  • Larvicidal Potency of Arta (Calligonum comosum L'Her.) Extract on the
           Biology of Culex pipiens Mosquito

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: In recent years, application of synthetic insecticides in mosquito control program has been limited due to the concern about environmental sustainability; therefore, an urgent looking for environmental friendly insecticides against mosquito species was designed. In the current investigation, the green shoot extract of arta (Calligonum comosum L'Her.) has been assayed to evaluate its influence as a potential larvicidal on the second instar larvae of Culex pipiens mosquito. Materials and Methods: The plant samples were collected from the natural vegetation surrounding Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Different concentrations of ethanolic plant extract (50, 75 and 100%) were applied against Culex pipiens mosquito and the effect was monitored every 3 h over a total exposure time period of 24 h. The GC-MS technique was employed to detect the chemical compounds in the ethanolic plant extract. Results: It has been found that the shoot extract of arta, Calligonum comosum was effective against the second instar larvae of Culex pipiens mosquito as indicated by the total mortality rate after 15, 18 and 24 h corresponding to concentrations 100, 75 and 50%, respectively. These results showed that the larvicidal activity of the Calligonum comosum extract was concentration-time-dependent. Conclusion: The present findings strongly suggest that Calligonum comosum extract consists of bioactive compounds which are toxic to Culex pipiens mosquito larvae. For gaining betting deeper insights on the mechanism underlying the mode of action behind the efficacy of arta, Calligonum commosum extract on controlling mosquito, further detailed studies are required.

  • Nickel Variation in Biofilm, Saliva and Buccal Mucosa During Orthodontic

    • Abstract: Background: Nickel alloys (Ni) are broadly used in the fabrication of orthodontic adjuncts, they become an integral part of almost every orthodontic interventions. It is suggested that nickel is a toxic metal and in some cases is capable of producing carcinogenic effects, therefore, it is important to measure its levels in individuals with orthodontic appliances. Objective: To determine the levels of nickel in the oral cavity through samples of saliva, biofilm and the oral mucosa before and during 6 months of the orthodontic treatment. Methodology: Quasi-experimental study, the size of the sample was stablished according to historical trend with 270 samples taken from 30 subjects to which orthodontic appliances were placed. In order to determine the nickel concentration, the samples were analyzed in a thermo scientific Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) iCE 3000 series with graphite furnace in three different moments and time use of the orthodontic appliances in the mouth. Results: When comparing the nickel concentration in 3 times and taking into account the type of sample, significant differences were found in the biofilm, no differences were found according to the commercial house and the type of sample that had the greatest nickel concentration in the 3 times was the biofilm. The nickel levels in the oral cavity change after the placement of the orthodontic appliances, those changes being more significant in the saliva and biofilm samples, the biofilm sample is the one with the greater nickel concentrations before and after the placement of the orthodontic appliances. Conclusion: The nickel levels showed a significant increase in the subjects of the sample. Especially in biofilm sample in relation to time of installation of the brackets appliances in the mouth.
