  • Antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles synthesized using honey and

      Abstract: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are promising antimicrobial agents for treatment of wounds and burns. We synthesized AgNPs using honey at different pH values or with different gamma irradiation doses. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, TEM, DLS and FTIR. Their antimicrobial activity, against standard bacterial strains and silver-resistant clinical isolates from infected wounds and burns, was evaluated in vitro through determination of their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). AgNPs prepared using 30 g of honey exposed to 5 kGy gamma radiation had the best physical characters regarding stability and uniformity of particle size and shape. They recorded the lowest MIC values against both the standard and silver-resistant isolates. In conclusion, honey and gamma radiation can be used in synthesis of highly stable pure AgNPs, without affecting the physico-chemical and antimicrobial activity of honey.       Abstract: Proteins suffer changes in their tertiary structure when they are immobilized, and enzymatic activity is affected due to the low biocompatibility of some supporting materials. In this work immobilization of lysozyme on carbon nanotubes previously functionalized by microwave irradiation was studied. The effectiveness of the microwave-assisted acid treatment of carbon nanotubes was evaluated by XPS, TEM, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The carboxylic modification of nanotube surfaces by this fast, simple and feasible method allowed the physical adsorption and covalent linking of active lysozyme onto the carbonaceous material. Thermal inactivation kinetics, thermodynamic parameters and storage stability were studied for adsorbed and covalent enzyme complexes.   • Photocatalytic, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity
           of silver nanoparticles synthesised using forest and edible mushroom

      Abstract: Mushroom has been part of the human diet for thousands of years, and in recent times, the amounts consumed have risen greatly, involving a large number of species. Mushrooms used for nutritional and therapeutic purposes. In this study silver nanoparticles were synthesised using an edible mushroom ( Agaricus bisporus ) and forest mushroom ( Ganoderma lucidum ) extract. The synthesised nanoparticles were characterised by UV–vis spectroscopy, FTIR, powder XRD and SEM. Silver nanoparticles were synthesised at room temperature and at 60 °C. FTIR results recognised the presence of bioactive functional groups responsible for the reduction of silver nitrate to silver nanoparticles. From the XRD, it was observed that the nanoparticles are silver with an average size of 10–80 nm.   • In vitro and in vivo tests of PLA/d-HAp nanocomposite

      Abstract: The bioactivity of the PLA/d-HAp nanocomposite with 30 wt.% d-HAp was evaluated by in vitro tests and indicated that after 7 immersion days in SBF solution, PLA amorphous part was hydrolyzed and PLA crystal part was remained. The formation of apatite on the surface of the material was observed. The in vivo test results of PLA/d-HAp nanocomposite (70/30 wt/wt) on femur of dogs displayed that 3 months after grafting, the materials did not induce any osteitis, osteomyelitis or structural abnormalities. The histological and x-ray image demonstrated a growth of the bone into the material area, while osteitis and osteomyelitis were not observed.

      Abstract: Due to the unique properties of silver nanoparticles there is growing interest in their applications. Current trends in nanotechnology are focused on developing a new technique to synthesize nanoparticles using biological methods associated with the use of plant extracts, fungi, bacteria or essential oils. These methods are a promising alternative to conventional approaches which can minimize the use of hazardous substances. The silver nanoparticles synthesis using red tea infusion as a reducing and stabilizing agent and their characteristics have been described. Total antioxidant capacity using DPPH radical and total content of phenolic compounds by Folin–Ciocalteau method were measured in tea infusion.       Abstract: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have seen a recent spurt of use in varied fields of science. In this paper, we showed a novel application of AgNP as a promising microbial cell-lysis agent for genomic DNA isolation. We utilized chemically synthesized AgNPs for lysing bacterial cells to isolate their genomic DNA. The AgNPs efficiently lysed bacterial cells to yield good quality DNA that could be subsequently used for several molecular biology works.

      Abstract: Synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) under different physicochemical conditions like concentration of silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ), pH and temperature, using fungal cell filtrate of Aspergillus oryzae (MTCC No. 1846) and its antibacterial properties were demonstrated. When fungal cell filtrate having neutral pH was exposed to different concentrations of aqueous solution AgNO 3 (1–10 mM), formation of stable AgNPs of different sizes was observed. The size of the AgNPs decreased with the increase of AgNO 3 concentration from 1 mM to 8 mM, however, the particles size increased with the increase of AgNO 3 concentration from 9 mM to 10 mM. When fungal cell filtrate exposed to aqueous solution of 1 mM AgNO 3 at different pH (4–10), the silver ions (Ag + ) were reduced leading to the formation of stable AgNPs of different sizes.   • Optimum parameters for the production of nano-scale electrospun
           polycaprolactone to be used as a biomedical material

      Abstract: Electrospun nano-polycaprolactone (PCL) is an ideal candidate for biomedical applications, as it mimics the extracellular matrix and possesses good biocompatibility, biodegradability and mechanical properties. Formic acid/acetic acid (FA/AA) and formic acid/acetone (FA/A) solvent systems were reported to be the safest solvents for the preparation of nanoscale electrospun polycaprolactone and they are also a common solvent with many natural polymers. In the present study a comparison between the electrospun fibers produced by the two systems was done. The optimum conditions for preparing PCL nanofibers were studied. The results indicated that finer fibers were found for formic acid/acetic acid in comparison with those produced by formic acid/acetone solvent system. In addition, it was found that optimum conditions for PCL nanofibers electrospinning were detected for 70:30 FA/AA solvent ratio with 15% PCL concentration and a tip to collector distance of 12.5 cm at 20 kV.

           using Cassia fistula fruit aqueous extract and its antibacterial

      Abstract: There are several ways to produce nanoparticles, but the biological method of nanoparticle production is considered most efficient by researchers due to its eco-friendly and energy saving properties. In this study, the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via Cassia fistula fruit pulp extract was examined. Furthermore, its antibacterial effects were investigated both in vitro and in vivo . To achieve biosynthesis, 10 ml of C. fistula extract was added to 90 ml of aqueous solution of 1 mM silver nitrate. The solution was incubated in darkness overnight, at room temperature. After changing the color of solution, the production of AgNPs was examined by UV–Vis spectrophotometry, XRD and DLS methods. Finally, the antibacterial activity of AgNPs was investigated by using three methods: (1) agar well diffusion, (2) MIC determining and (3) effect on prevention of infection in wound on rat models.
