  • Fungal synthesis of size-defined nanoparticles

      Abstract: Fungi with metabolic capacities can efficiently synthesize a wide range of nanoparticles (NPs). This biotransformation process and its product have extensive applications especially for industry, agriculture and medicine, where NPs size and shape is essential and can be defined by specific analytical methods. Fungi cultivation and further bioconversion can be fully controlled to obtain the desired nanoparticles. Additionally, this review provides information about the fungus F. oxysporum , which is able to synthesize the largest amount of different types of NPs.

  • Comparative catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol by polyacrylamide-gold
           nanocomposite synthesized by hydrothermal autoclaving and conventional
           heating routes

      Abstract: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in polymeric polyacrylamide (PAAm) matrix were synthesized using conventional heating and autoclaving thermal techniques. The synthesized Au/PAAm nanocomposite was characterized using UV–vis spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The size of the synthesized particles was approximately 6.37 nm and 8.19 nm with the conventional heating and autoclaving thermal techniques, respectively. Electron diffraction x-ray spectroscopy and the Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy were used for the composition and elemental studies, which confirmed that the Au metallic atoms were synthesized and embedded within a PAAm matrix via a coordination bond between the carbonyl (–CONH 2 ) group and the metallic NPs.       Abstract: In this work CoFe 2 O 4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized by honey mediated sol-gel combustion method and further annealed at higher temperature 500 °C, 700 °C, 900 °C and 1100 °C. The synthesized spinel ferrite nanoparticles is investigated by x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC), field emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. The x-ray diffraction study reveals face-centered cubic spinel cobalt ferrite crystal phase formation. The crystallite size and lattice parameter are increased with annealing temperature.   • Synthesis and properties of nickel-doped Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /C nano-composite:
           an anode for lithium ion batteries

      Abstract: Composite of nickel-doped Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 and carbon (designated as Ni–Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /C) is synthesized by solid-state reaction with sucrose added as the conductive carbon source. For comparison, nickel-doped Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (designated as Ni–Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 ) is obtained under similar conditions. Both materials are characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, charge–discharge cycling and cyclic voltammetry. Analysis of SEM images shows that Ni–Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /C consists of smaller particles than Ni–Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 .   • High surface stability of magnetite on bi-layer Fe 3 O 4
           /Fe/MgO(0 0 1) films under 1 MeV Kr + ion irradiation

      Abstract: We investigate the stability of the bi-layer Fe 3 O 4 /Fe(0 0 1) films grown epitaxially on MgO(0 0 1) substrates with the layer thickness in the range of 25–100 nm upon 1 MeV Kr + ion irradiation. The layer structure and layer composition of the films before and after ion irradiation were studied by XRR, RBS and RBS-C techniques. The interdiffusion and intermixing was analyzed. No visible change in the RBS spectra was observed upon irradiation with ion fluence below 10 15 Kr cm −2 . The bi-layer structure and the stoichiometric Fe 3 O 4 layer on the surface were well preserved after Kr + ion irradiation at low damage levels, although the strong intermixing implied a large interfacial (Fe x O y ) and (Fe, Mg)O y layer respective at Fe 3 O 4 –Fe and Fe–MgO interface.   • Characterization of silver nanoparticles synthesized using an endophytic
           fungus, Penicillium oxalicum having potential antimicrobial activity

      Abstract: The aim of the present study was to test the efficacy of the extracellular mycelium extract of Penicillium oxalicum isolated from Phlogacanthus thyrsiflorus to biosynthesize silver nanoparticles. It was characterized using ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy. The silver nanoparticles were evaluated for antimicrobial activity. The characterization confirms the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Both silver nanoparticles and combination of silver nanoparticles with streptomycin showed activity against the four bacteria. The results suggested that P. oxalicum offers eco-friendly production of silver nanoparticles and the antibacterial activity may find application in biomedicine.

      Abstract: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are promising antimicrobial agents for treatment of wounds and burns. We synthesized AgNPs using honey at different pH values or with different gamma irradiation doses. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, TEM, DLS and FTIR. Their antimicrobial activity, against standard bacterial strains and silver-resistant clinical isolates from infected wounds and burns, was evaluated in vitro through determination of their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). AgNPs prepared using 30 g of honey exposed to 5 kGy gamma radiation had the best physical characters regarding stability and uniformity of particle size and shape.   • Ferroelectric, dielectric and electrical behavior of two-dimensional lead
           sulphide nanosheets

      Abstract: Two-dimensional pure cubic phase lead sulphide (PbS) nanosheets were synthesized using solid state reaction method at ambient pressure and low temperature ~190 °C. From 210 K–300 K, small polaron hopping conduction mechanism was found to be dominant in PbS nanosheets at frequencies 20 Hz–2 MHz. High values of dielectric constant (~200) and electrical conductivity (of the order of 10 −3 S m −1 at 300 K) of PbS nanosheets were extracted suggesting that it is a proficient material for capacitive storage devices. A high value of density of states of the order of 10 32 eV −1 cm −3 was obtained for PbS nanosheets. The capacitance-voltage (CV) measurements of PbS nanosheets resulted in a stable butterfly loop due to switching of ferroelectric polarization at 300 K.       Abstract: Proteins suffer changes in their tertiary structure when they are immobilized, and enzymatic activity is affected due to the low biocompatibility of some supporting materials. In this work immobilization of lysozyme on carbon nanotubes previously functionalized by microwave irradiation was studied. The effectiveness of the microwave-assisted acid treatment of carbon nanotubes was evaluated by XPS, TEM, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The carboxylic modification of nanotube surfaces by this fast, simple and feasible method allowed the physical adsorption and covalent linking of active lysozyme onto the carbonaceous material. Thermal inactivation kinetics, thermodynamic parameters and storage stability were studied for adsorbed and covalent enzyme complexes.
