  • UWB outdoor channel environments: analysis of experimental data
           collection and comparison to IEEE 802.l5.4a UWB channel model

      Abstract: The use of ultra wideband (UWB) radio technology in outdoor environments at longer ranges is gaining interest in a number of application areas. This effort presents the results of a UWB channel model study based on a data collection campaign in three outdoor channel environments: open campus, dense forest, and urban at distances up to 70 m. The aim is to present fundamental results in different channel conditions so as to lay the groundwork for developing effective outdoor UWB systems. Parameters extracted from the experimental data closely match parameters generated by the IEEE 802.15.4a UWB channel model, indicating that this model can be used to analyse properties of a wider range of outdoor channel environments than has been reported. The frequency dependent path loss and channel capacity, calculated for each channel, indicate that UWB is a feasible candidate for several longer range outdoor applications.

  • Identifying and filtering noise caused by sensor set switching in UWB
           indoor position tracking

      Abstract: Trilateration calculations are affected by errors in distance measurements from the set of fixed points to the object of interest. When these errors are systemic, each distinct set of fixed points can be said to exhibit a unique set noise. For ultra-wideband (UWB) indoor position tracking, the set of fixed points is a set of sensors measuring the distance to a tracked tag. In this paper we develop a noise model for this sensor set noise, along with a particle filter that uses our set noise model. We test our methods on a real UWB system. Our methods showed an approximately 15% improvement in accuracy over the raw measurements.

  • Analysis of power spectral density of ultra wideband waveforms for pulse
           shape modulation

      Abstract: Choice of ultra wideband (UWB) pulse shapes has become an interesting challenge such that the spectral limits of the frequency band approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) can be utilised efficiently. In this paper, we compare the efficiency of various UWB pulse shapes based upon their power spectral density (PSD) and autocorrelation functions (ACF). We propose a set of prolate spheroidal wave functions (PSWF) for a typical M-ary pulse shape modulation (PSM) scheme. In the process, we show closed form expressions for the ACF of PSWF-based UWB pulse shapes of different orders.

  • Design and analysis of superstrate embedded dielectric resonator antenna

      Abstract: Antenna high gain, wide bandwidth, reconfigurability and compact design has been long requirements in the field of mobile communications and aeronautics. This paper experimentally investigates superstrate layer of arrays placed above the dielectric resonator antenna (DRA), which can largely enhance the gain of antenna. Experimental and simulated results of gain with and without superstrate have been investigated. The superstrate arrays placed on DRA has improved the antenna gain, i.e., 8.7 dBi to 12.27 dBi. The effect of high permittivity material has been studied for gain and bandwidth improvement. Barium strontium titanate (BaSrTio³) mixed with silicon oil was used in DRA. Superstrate array have resulted into gain improvement to the extent of 28%. The design frequency was kept at 6.59 Ghz and verified theoretically using MATLAB. Height of substrate and dielectric constant affected the gain and bandwidth. Theoretical, simulated and experimental results have been compared and found in good agreement.

  • Artificial neural network design of stub microstrip band-pass filters

      Abstract: In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) design technique for a stub microstrip band-pass filter is presented. Essential dimensions of the microstrip filter layout are used to get the relationship of the input-outputs for ANN model. This paper presents the design and analysis of stub microstrip band-pass filter at mid-band frequency 1.8 GHz, which produced improved bandwidth and minimum insertion loss of -0.5899 dB and return loss of -36.67 dB. Artificial neural network architecture has been proposed to determine the magnitude variation of scattering parameters (S-parameters) of the microstrip band-pass filters for various dimensions. The ANN model produced has been exposed to be as exact and veracious as an EM simulator and it is computationally more effective in the design. The simulation is performed using the commercial software IE3D 14.1 and ANN training of S-parameters are performed in MATLAB 7.1.
