  • Miniaturised CSCP patch antenna using PMGS and IFS with frequency
           rejection at 5.5 GHz for UWB wireless applications

      Abstract: This paper focuses on the performance parameters estimation of a patch antenna in their ultra wideband region. In particular, a special attention intended for FRNB characterisation for WLAN at 5.15-5.825 GHz, bandwidth enhancement, and size reduction. The fractal and PMGS techniques help to keep VSWR < 2. A CSCP antenna excited by a 50 ohm CPW-feed embedded with an N-shaped FRNB is examined and experimentally tested. With this design, the attainable impedance bandwidth is about 138% (S11 < −10 dB) in the UWB range. This antenna is fabricated on FR4 substrate having dielectric constant ε<SUB align="right">r = 4.3, thickness t = 1.53 mm, loss tangent tan δ = 0.0162, and effective conductivity at f<SUB align="right">0(S/m) = 0.0042. The simulated and experimental results are found valid. This antenna is very useful in UWB wireless communications in their band pass and band stop characterisation.

  • Conception and optimisation of UWB microstrip array antennas for radar
           applications with ordinary end-fire beam steering characteristic

      Abstract: In this paper, a compact linear array antennas with ultra wideband (UWB) end-fire characteristic for radar applications is proposed. The array antenna consists of four rectangular antenna element with a partial ground plane and a coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line of 50 ohm. The proposed array antennas is etched onto a FR4 printed circuit board (PCB) with an overall size of 85 × 32 × 1.58 mm<SUP align="right">3</SUP> and a dielectric constant ε<SUB align="right">r = 4.4, it is planar and simple, and it is able to achieve an impedance bandwidth about 72% which is required in various radar applications like weather radars, local air traffic radars and naval radars. Ansoft's high frequency structure simulator (HFSS) and computer simulation tool (CST) softwares are used to calculate and compare the various parameters mentioned after.

  • A survey on ultra wideband and ultrasonic communication for body area
           networks

      Abstract: Emergence of implantable and wearable medical sensors for patient monitoring, diagnosis as well as cure has helped in the development of body area networks (BANs). For networking of these implantable and wearable devices, an appropriate choice of radio technology and communication methodology has to be made. Ultra wideband (UWB) has been identified as a solution for wireless body area networks (WBANs) in IEEE 802.15.6, but there are issues to be addressed such as attenuation inside body for implantable devices, energy efficient networking with low heat dissipation and others. Ultrasonic communication although an emerging technology promises better propagation inside body in watery media. It is known to be used without much health hazard in medical applications. This paper compares and evaluates the above two technologies for WBAN. It provides an extensive survey of existing work on UWB and ultrasonic communication for body area networks and highlights the unaddressed research challenges in using UWB and ultrasonic for WBAN applications.

  • DS-UWB pulse design in IEEE802.15.3a multipath fading channel for
           cognitive radio applications

      Abstract: This paper presents a novel spectrum shaping technique in direct sequence ultra-wideband (DS-UWB) communication systems. This proposed pulse introduces spectral nulls to limit the interference impact of high power coexisting narrowband signals and to elevate the applications of cognitive radio. The idea depends on the addition and subtraction of several UWB Gaussian derivative pulses in order to design a new pulse that has spectral null at the operating frequency of the narrowband interference (NBI) signal. The use of the Gaussian derivative ensures that the UWB spectrum mask established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is met. The NBI signals are modelled as either the wireless local area network (WLAN) IEEE802.11n which operates in the 5 GHz frequency band or multi tone signals. The power spectral density of the proposed transmitted UWB pulse is derived analytically. The bit error rate performance of the proposed pulse is derived in the multi-path IEEE802.15.3a UWB fading channel models and validated with simulations. Results show that the impact of either the IEEE802.11n interference signal or the multi tone interference signals can be effectively suppressed by transmitting and matched filtering the new pulse with a single or multiple spectral nulls at the interference operating frequencies.

  • Planning of UWB indoor positioning network using binary integer linear
           programming

      Abstract: The ultra wide band (UWB) is a promising indoor positioning sensor. Its precise range measurement and wall penetration capability are well suited for indoor navigation. UWB anchor locations must also be carefully determined to achieve the optimal performance of a UWB positioning. However, previous approaches on the UWB anchor placement resulted in poor positioning accuracy around corners of an indoor environment and ignored UWB wall penetration effects. To overcome those shortcomings, this paper introduces an advanced method of an UWB anchor network design that provides high positioning accuracy in all user space and minimises uncertainty due to UWB signal wall penetrations with a binary integer linear programming. It is expected that the presented method would provide a reliable positioning performance that is needed for the navigation of autonomous systems.
