  • A low power 35 GHz CMOS high linearity, unconditional stability and
           excellent gain flatness UWB power amplifier design using current reused
           technique

      Abstract: A two-stage 0.18 µm RF CMOS current reused class-AB power amplifier design is proposed for 35 GHz ultra-wide-band application. It uses a cascade with current reused as first stage and common source with resistive feedback as a second stage. The simulation results shows a gain flatness of 24 dB and an input 1 dB compression of −14.63 dBm while consuming 22.6 mW of power from 1.8 V supply. Further, the input and output return loss of less than −9 dB and −15 dB respectively is obtained and reverse isolation of less than −58 dB provides good port to port isolation. The efficiency of the designed power amplifier is 24% at an input RF power of −5 dBm. Unconditional stability, good linear and low power consumption is the novelty of the proposed PA design with a considerable group delay of ± 550 pS.

  • UWB wireless: a scheme for SCADA communications in offshore wind farms

      Abstract: Utilisation of reliable communication technologies for data communication is a key challenge in smart grids. Due to specific characteristics of offshore wind farms (OWFs), wireless data communications is of interest for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) communication between wind towers. The ultra-wideband (UWB) communication technology is one of the state-of-the-art communication technologies suitable for inexpensive, low-data rate, outdoor, long-range, communication applications. However, in order to employ it in OWFs, its link modelling and performance must first be well analysed comprehensively. In this paper, the UWB communication channel is modelled in OWFs and with respect to sea surface conditions as the signal reflection surface, performance of the UWB link subject to several metrics such as range-data rate, range-bit error rate (BER), and path loss are analytically and numerically evaluated. The obtained results clearly illustrate superior capabilities of UWB technology in this application, promising a bright future in advancing the proposed ideas.

  • Embedded cylindrical magneto-hydrodynamic antenna

      Abstract: An antenna consisting of three concentric cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is placed on circular patch surrounded by two annular rings. This antenna is excited with feed probe. Cylindrical propylene pipe (PPR) tubes have been filled with a mixture of silicon oil and barium strontium titanate. The electric fields and magnetic fields produced fluid velocity field due to magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) phenomenon. The fluid velocity v, becomes a function of poynting vector. By applying external variable DC electric bias (5 V to 30 V) using bias TEE in association with fixed magnetic bias (2,500 Tesla) in fluid resonators, antenna gain varied from 1.5 dB to 11.07 dB. Two permanent magnets are used to produce magnetic bias. The controlled frequency shift of 8.82 GHz, 10.5 GHz, 12.4 GHz and 12.7 GHz are observed with combinations of applied bias, which made this antenna frequency agile.

  • Compact planar UWB filter using cascaded resonators

      Abstract: This paper presents a planar ultra wide band filter employing chip inductors and complementary split ring resonators. Asymmetric interdigital coupled lines are used for achieving bandpass characteristics. Lower side transmission zeros are introduced using LC resonators consisting of chip inductors and circular patch capacitors. The filter has low insertion loss and flat group delay in its passband, steep roll off rate and good stopband attenuation. Measurement results for transmission and reflection characteristics of the fabricated filter are in good agreement with simulated response.

  • CPW-fed compact UWB spiral antenna for multiband applications

      Abstract: A CPW-fed compact planar spiral antenna is presented. Different sections of the spiral monopole can excite multi resonant modes which makes the antenna suitable for multiband applications. The spiral is designed for dual band operation in GSM 1800 and UWB band. By using shorting strips between the arms of the spiral monopole, the frequency of the first operating band is lowered to WMTS band without change in overall antenna size. The antenna prototype is fabricated and tested. Simulated and measured readings are in good agreement. Radiation patterns are stable in all the intended bands of operation and group delay is nearly constant in the UWB range.

  • Range impairments of multi-band OFDM UWB communication systems in the
           presence of OFDM-based WLAN interference

      Abstract: In this paper, a closed form expression for the bit error rate performance of the multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra wideband (UWB) communication system in the presence of interference is analytically analysed. The considered channel is the Saleh-Valenzuela multipath fading channel model. The interference is modelled as the OFDM-based IEEE802.11n wireless local area networks (WLANs). The dependence of the bit error rate performance of the MB-OFDM UWB communication system on the transmission range along with the impact of interference is also analytically investigated. Numerical results are validated with the aid of simulations. It is shown that the range performance of the MB-OFDM UWB communication system is severely deteriorated due to the presence of such interference.

  • Reduction of clutter using TWI ultra wideband imaging

      Abstract: TWI technology is an emerging research area used in urban warfare situation. Ultra wide band range signals has the capability of penetrating through the materials hence ultra wideband RADAR is suitable for this situation. To give the better representation of the scanned scene signal processing techniques are included on the raw data. In this paper, we used impulse RADAR for TWI and for the retrieval of B-scan signal back projection algorithm is used. Here we used a gain factor of 100 to increase the strength of echo. To reduce the clutter from B-scan signal SVD technique is used and the peak SNR is observed to be −3.30 dB.

  • High gain and wide band rectangular DRA

      Abstract: The paper presented the novel approach of exciting higher order modes in rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (RDRA), higher order modes imparts higher gain and neighbouring mode merging results into enhanced bandwidth. The resonant modes take the real orthogonal basis of antenna currents. Higher order modes provided miniaturisation, gain and large bandwidth including wide design space for polarisation and reconfigurability. Higher order modes generation and control have been presented with simulated and experimental results. The dual excitation of RDRA generated even and odd modes. Space 's' between top and bottom DRAs, controlled modes and shifting of first and third resonant modes towards second mode resulted into merging of all three modes. At higher order modes gain of 9.1 dBi and bandwidth 8.2 GHz has been reported in this work. Mathematical modelling for eigenvalue ω<SUB align="right">m n p and eigenvector (amplitude coefficients and phase) d<SUB align="right">m n p and c<SUB align="right">m n p have been developed for TE and TM modes.
