  • Experimental measurements of the accuracy of commercial UWB real-time
           localisation systems and proposal of new collision avoidance algorithms
           for industrial applications

      Abstract: A typical problem in industrial applications is the localisation and tracking of goods in a warehouse as well as the monitoring of machines moving along production lines. The emerging ultra wideband (UWB) technology is a very promising solution since it can be used in hostile environment where traditional radio frequency systems have problems to work because of the severe multipath effect. In this paper exhaustive experimental measurements of a UWB real-time localisation system in industrial environments are presented. The accuracy of the positioning system with static and moving objects and persons is investigated. The accuracy is tested by changing the localisation technique (ToA, TDoA, TDoA+AoA), the cell shape and dimensions, the heights of the sensors in the cell, etc. The accuracy is measured both when the tag is hooked on a metallic object and when it is worn by a person. Finally, in this paper two new algorithms to avoid collisions between moving objects are proposed.

  • An efficient continuous phase modulation for high data rate body area
           networks

      Abstract: This paper presents a novel modulation technique for body area networks. The new modulation technique is designed taking into account the Rayleigh nature of body area channel. In this paper, we propose a novel idea that combines properties of continuous phase modulation and pulse position modulation techniques. Simulation is carried out at different frequencies on this channel. A comparison is presented between the existing modulation techniques like the m-ary PSK and FSK and the special modulation techniques proposed for body area networks (BANs). The proposed technique is highly immune to multipath distortion and fading. Apart from being power efficient, the technique does not demand large bandwidth compared to its counterparts. The benefit of the proposed modulation technique lies in its ability to carry large number of bits per symbol. Another advantage is its ability to carry maximum information while signal is null. This method is useful to support high data rate for wireless body area networks.

  • Hybrid magneto-hydrodynamic antenna

      Abstract: A hybrid magneto-hydrodynamic antenna consisting of one copper annular ring loaded with dielectric resonator has been biased with DC voltage and magnetic fields. RF input and DC bias voltage has been applied in x direction and magnetic field B has been given in y direction. Propylene polymer pipes (PPR) cylindrical tube filled with mixture of barium strontium titanate (BSTO) and silicone oil is placed on the concentric copper annular ring. Mathematical coupled solution of Maxwell's and Navier Stroke's equations have been worked for this geometry. A new antenna parameter, i.e., velocity field (v) has been found to be contributing to the Poynting vector solution to this class of antennas. Velocity field (v) has become integral part along with E and H fields for computing Poynting vector. Hence, PPR geometry, fluid volume, copper annular ring radius, fluid permittivity, electric filed (E), magnetic field (H) and velocity (v) becomes the function of antenna resonant frequency and radiation patterns. A prototype antenna has been designed. Simulations based on HFSS have been presented. Both type results were compared. More than 4.5 GHz ultra large bandwidth and 17 dB gain has been reported in the results.

  • Multiple narrowband interference suppression for UWB communication systems
           in Nakagami fading channels

      Abstract: This paper investigates the performance of ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems in the presence of multiple in-band narrowband interference signals in a Nakagami-m frequency selective fading channel. The UWB systems have a restraint on their transmission power levels in order to control its interference to other in-band operating services; however UWB systems unavoidably suffer from the interference caused by the coexisting systems such as the IEEE802.11a signal, making it extremely difficult to maintain adequate signal-to-noise-and interference ratio (SNIR) levels. In order to mitigate the impact of such strong interference the paper proposes a suppression technique which introduces spectral nulls at the operating frequencies of the narrowband interference (NBI) signals. The bit error rate performance of the proposed scheme is derived in a Nakagami multi-path frequency selective fading channel and validated with simulation. The results show that with the use of such proposed technique the NBI impact can be effectively suppressed leading to an improvement to the bit error rate performance of the UWB communication systems. A comparison with a notch filter-based case is also presented where it will be shown that the proposed technique out performs a perfectly tuned notch filter.

  • Simulation of a non-coherent UWB transceiver design - noise and
           impairment analysis

      Abstract: The performance of an ultra wideband (UWB) system operating in the 3.1 GHz-10.6 GHz band is investigated in the presence of different system impairments. The UWB system uses a transmitted-reference technique with pulse position modulation for transmission and a receiver with non-coherent detection. The performance of the system is simulated under different channel model conditions including additive white Gaussian noise and multipath fading for a transceiver with imperfect clock timing (jitter). The bit error rate of the overall system is characterised for different combinations of channel and clock impairments. A practical application of the system is analysed for a wireless video link between a laptop and external high definition television. The receiver system noise temperature together with the channel and clock impairments are evaluated, and a novel relationship is developed to calculate the link budget for the required transmission power to achieve a desired signal to noise ratio at the demodulator input.

  • Dualband parasitic metamaterial square microstrip patch antenna design

      Abstract: In this paper, dualband parasitic square microstrip patch antenna loaded with metamaterial has been reported. Metamaterials exhibit qualitatively new electromagnetic response functions that cannot be found in nature. The inclusion of these structures allows simultaneous operation over several frequencies. Stacking of the patches increases the overall performance of the antenna. The antenna is designed to function in two bands. The antenna has two working frequency bands and its centre frequencies are 1.7 GHz and 1.76 GHz. It is applicable for several wireless applications. Design results are obtained by high frequency structure simulator (HFSS), which is used for simulating microwave passive components.
