      Abstract: Surgery restoring lost parts of the skull, i.e., cranioplasty, is widely used in neurosurgical practice. We have compared operations using patient-specific implants obtained by two different methods: formation based on anatomical models and direct three-dimensional printing (direct metal laser sintering, DMLS). Both methods gave comparable clinical efficacy, though the DMLS manufacturing process avoids the need for intermediate devices and produces the required implant directly, giving this method an advantage.

  • A Device for Mobilization of the Greater Pectoral Muscle during
           Endoprosthetic Surgery

      Abstract: A device for mobilization of the greater pectoral muscle during endoprosthetic surgery was developed at the Samara Regional Clinical Oncology Center (Utility model patent No. 175229; November 28, 2017). The device makes the surgery less traumatic, reduces the volume of blood loss and the duration of surgery, and improves the quality of visualization of the surgical area. It allows the rate of injuries to the greater pectoral muscle to be reduced.

  • An Electret Stimulator of Osteoreparation Based on Tantalum Anodic Oxide
           for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis

      Abstract: The construction of an electret stimulator of osteoreparation (ESO) made of tantalum with an anodic oxide (AO) surface in the electret state (ES) is described. Factors leading to degradation of the ES of AO were investigated and recommendations for preventing this during manufacture, storage, and use of the ESO were developed. A polarization mechanism for propagating the effects of the electret electric field to all the main structures of the device is proposed.

  • Noninvasive Ultrasonic Sanitation of Stents for Drainage of the Upper
           Urinary Tract

      Abstract: The goal of the study presented in this paper was to increase the effectiveness of stent sanitation with the purpose of avoiding the undesirable effects of internal drainage (in particular, incrustation). Here we suggest a new method for noninvasive ultrasound treatment and develop new equipment for more effective sanitation of ureteral stents. It was shown that ultrasound exposure of the ureteral stent is an inexpensive, efficient, and safe method for reducing salt obstruction. This method can be recommended for use as one of the therapeutic measures aimed at the prevention of obstructive pyelonephritis.

  • Evaluation of Blood Plasma Coagulability by Laser Speckle Correlation

      Abstract: The process of blood plasma coagulation was studied using the laser speckle correlation technique. Coagulation times measured in samples of different volumes using the Minilab 701 commercial coagulometer and the laser speckle correlation technique were compared. It was shown that the laser speckle correlation technique provides comparable accuracy of measurement, while allowing the sample volume to be considerably reduced.

      Abstract: We present here the results of mathematical modeling of the process of thrombus formation in the chamber of a blood pump from a pulsatile-type circulation assist system with an output of 30 cm3 using two types of Russian- made mechanical heart valves. The effects of the type of mechanical heart valve on thrombus formation in the blood pump chamber during operation of the pulsatile-type circulation assist system were assessed.

      Abstract: The article describes a new computer model of the systemic circulation. It presents a comparative study of the effect of rotary pump operation in the pulsatile and non-pulsatile modes on the parameters of central hemodynamics and coronary blood flow. The pulsatile mode is shown to have the advantage of increasing the pulsation component of the aortic pressure and reducing the afterload on the left ventricle of the heart.

      Abstract: Mathematical simulation of heat-exchange processes in a breast with a malignant tumor was carried out taking into account thermophysical properties of internal tissues. The results of calculation of the physical temperature in the breast and the brightness temperature for four antennas used in breast care are presented. The obtained results can be used in developing new medical antennas and radiometers with improved characteristics.

      Abstract: Increases in the numbers of surgical procedures for primary joint replacement inevitably lead to increases in the requirements for revision replacement of the hip joint. The number of patients with severe destruction of the acetabulum, in whom achievement of the implant stability is difficult or impossible, has increased. Manufacture of custom-made acetabular components is indicated in these cases. This article describes a method of filling defects in pelvic bones with custom-made implants 3D printed from medical titanium LPW-TI64-GD23-TYPE5 as specified by ASTM F136. The implant model is manufactured based on results of measurements of the density of the surrounding bone tissue using the Hounsfield scale.

This article explains the principles of the construction of 3D images in medical ultrasound and discloses the physical basis, advantages and drawbacks of 3D scanning methods.

  • Potential Power Supply Methods for Implanted Devices

      Abstract: This review addresses questions of the specific characteristics of power supply to implanted devices (ID), including the service life of supply elements and the level of power consumption of contemporary devices, the acceptable weight and size characteristics of ID, and priority areas for implantation. Known methods of energy transmission and transformation are compared and the ranges of potential specific power for these are determined −0.1-100 mW/cm2 for wireless energy transmission, 0.0001-0.1 mW/cm2 for transformation of energy for sources specific to biological objects, and less than 0.0001 mW/cm2 for isotope power sources.

  • Automation of the Diagnosis of Age-Related Changes in Parameters of the
           Cardiovascular System

      Abstract: An algorithm for calculating the dynamics of age-related changes in parameters of the cardiovascular system of humans in the North of the Russian Federation was developed. Using one coordinate (xi, the cardiac interval) as an example, a method is presented for calculating quasi-attractor parameters in a two-dimensional phase space, where x2 = dxi /dt is the rate of change of cardiac intervals with age. Study results using the algorithm (and the whole automated system) for three age groups of Khanty women to describe age-related changes in quasi-attractor parameters during normal aging are presented.

  • A Surgical Carbon Dioxide Laser with an Electromagnetic Power Control
           System

      Abstract: In this work, the possibility of controlling radiation power of a surgical carbon dioxide laser using an electromagnetic control system is considered. It is demonstrated that the electromagnetic control system makes it possible to adjust the laser radiation power within a wide range, allowing thereby the same laser system to be used for various medical purposes. Experimental results on the impact of modulated laser radiation on biological tissues are presented.

  • A Method for Detection of the Optic Disc Boundaries in Fundus Images

      Abstract: A method for detection of the optic disc boundaries in fundus images is suggested. The method is based on integration of luminance samples along the diagonals. A modification of the method based on an algorithm of luminance sample integration in a fan pattern is also suggested. To reduce the effect of blood vessels on the results of integration, images are processed in the red channel. The method suggested in this work can be used for automating the description of fundus images in ophthalmology.

  • Principles of Data Acquisition Using Positron Emission Tomography Combined
           with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PET/MRI)

      Abstract: Combined whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides high-contrast imaging of soft tissues in combination with quantitative assessment of levels of absorption of a radiopharmaceutical. New technical solutions for PET/MRI have provided a large field for scientific studies. One significant difficulty is that of overcoming the challenge of assessing correction for the attenuation (attenuation correction, AC) of positron radiation by human soft tissues using MRI data. This literature review assesses existing principles for data acquisition using combined PET/MRI.
