  • Minimization of Hemolysis and Improvement of the Hydrodynamic Efficiency
           of a Circulatory Support Pump by Optimizing the Pump Flowpath

      Abstract: The present study focuses on the development of methods for design calculation and optimization of the circulatory support pump flowpath. The object of this study is the flowpath of an axial flow pump consisting of a straightener, an impeller, and a diffuser. The working fluid has constant density and viscosity that are close to the physiological parameters of blood of a healthy human. The fluid is considered to be incompressible; the flow is considered steady. Red blood cells in the stream are simulated with non-interacting spherical particles whose trajectories are considered as the trajectories of movement of red blood cells. Equivalent shear stress is calculated at each point of the particle trajectory. The damage parameter is calculated based on the current level of the equivalent shear stress and the time of exposure to shear stress. The criteria of maximum efficiency and minimal hemolysis are used as the optimization criteria. The flowpath is optimized according to these two criteria and local optimum parameters for the suggested initial geometry are determined.

  • Hepatocyte Suspension as a Biological Material for Extracorporeal Liver
           Support Systems

      Abstract: Experimental in vitro studies have demonstrated the possibility of use and the efficiency of the hepatocyte suspension as a biological material for the elimination of toxic compounds and normalization of metabolic processes during plasma dialysis using a bioartificial liver device. The developed circuits and bioreactor devices provide optimal conditions for normal functioning of the rat hepatocyte suspension for several hours required for cell dialysis.

  • Automated Reticulocyte Counting in Peripheral Blood Smears

      Abstract: The results of reticulocyte counting obtained using the Vision Hema® Reticulocytes (Vision Hema® RET) software are presented and compared to the results obtained by manual reticulocyte counting. Blood samples with pronounced reticulocytosis (main group, n = 15) and samples with normal cell count (control group, n = 15) are analyzed. Use of a scanner analyzer allows the reticulocyte counting time in the samples of the main group to be reduced by 90.5% (from 202.3 ± 44.7 to 106.3 ± 18.3 s); in the control group it is reduced by 56% (from 155.1 ± 38.0 to 99.9 ± 16.8 s). The results of reticulocyte counting using the Vision Hema® RET software do not differ from the light microscopy data in the main group (p = 0.211) and in the control group (p = 0.53). The Spearman’s correlation coefficient R is 0.977. The results of evaluation of the within-run precision (CVWR) demonstrate high reproducibility of reticulocyte count as compared to the manual method in cases of both normal (9.45% against 20.5%) and high (4.43% against 8.63%) reticulocyte counts. The Vision Hema® RET soft-ware is recommended for use in clinical diagnostic laboratories.

  • Use of Implants Constructed Using Three-dimensional Titanium Nickelide
           Mesh to Fill Cavity Defects in the Femur

      Abstract: Acute spherical cavity defects in the distal metaphysis of the femur were created and filled with a mesh implant made of titanium nickelide wire in 15 mature adult male Wistar rats. Analogous defects were created in animals of the control group (n = 15) but were not filled. Filling of the defect in rats of the experimental group was noted 90 days after implantation, but did not occur in rats of the control group. No differences were seen in the clinical picture or pathomorphological or biochemical investigation results between animals of the experimental groups.

  • Quantitative Assessment of the Degree of Degenerative Change in
           Intervertebral Disks Using Diffusion-weighted Images

      Abstract: This report addresses quantitative assessment of the degree of degenerative change of intervertebral disks (IVD) using maps constructed from diffusion-weighted images (DWI). Values were determined for the coefficient of diffusion (Cd) for three groups of lumbar intervertebral disks: IVD without structural changes, those with protrusions, and those with extrusions/prolapses. Statistically significant differences in Cd values and DWI maps were seen between the three groups of IVD. DW MRI scanning with calculation of Cd and construction of DWI maps can be used as a potential noninvasive method for the diagnosis of IVD degeneration.

  • A Fuzzy Biotechnical Control System for Human Operator Productivity

      Abstract: A fuzzy biotechnical operator productivity control system with feedback based on the leading type of perception of information and the emotions is presented. The system is noninvasive and can be used all day to monitor a human operator’s state of fatigue, drowsiness, etc. Factors affecting operator productivity are described briefly, along with the components of productivity, diagnostic challenges, monitoring of psychoemotional status, and the results of the diagnosis of these states from changes in the manipulation of pointing devices; the resulting system is described, along with regression and fuzzy approaches to diagnosing productivity.

  • A Virtual Instrument for Analysis of the Parameters of Somatosensory
           Event-linked Potentials

      Abstract: A virtual instrument for analysis of event-related potentials based on LabVIEW is described. Without specific apparatus, this allows the components of event-related potentials to be resolved, with automatic measurement of amplitude, frequency spectrum, power, mean square values, and differences between maximum and minimum amplitudes. The virtual instrument may be useful for developing telemetry systems for functional diagnosis with automatic processing of large volumes of data using the event-related potentials method.

  • Correction of the Output Parameters of an Electrosurgical Unit for
           Minimizing Thermal Damage to Tissues

      Abstract: A method for diminishing electrosurgery-induced thermal damage to biological tissues by correcting the power output is considered. The output power is corrected according to the type of biological tissue and the impedance increment caused by coagulation.   • Studies of the Adhesive Component of Friction in Hip Joint Endoprostheses

      Abstract: We present here an analysis of the friction components in friction pairs of hip joint endoprostheses in conditions of dry friction and biological media. The tribological pairs studied were found to have different behavioral characteristics depending on the external loading and the “hardness” of the kinematic unit itself. The lowest levels of the adhesion component of the coefficient of friction were seen in ceramic−ceramic friction pairs.

  • A Thermoelectric System for Thermal Cosmetic Procedures on the Face

      Abstract: Construction of a system for conducting thermal cosmetic procedures in which the operating unit is a thermoelectric energy transducer is discussed. We present the results of experimental studies of a research prototype. Practical tests demonstrated the applicability of the system in practice and showed that standard thermoelectric modules produced by Russian firms can be used, with short warm-up periods and low inertia on changing thermal operating modes.

  • Technological Optimization of Devices for Safe Storage of
           Platelet-Containing Transfusion Media

      Abstract: A mathematical model of process optimization based on adaptive fuzzy Markov chain algorithms is presented. The model is shown to be effective in optimizing storage devices for platelet-containing transfusion media. The problem of maintaining the technological process state near the extremum of the objective function with the steady state-probability of ~90 % is solved.

  • Determination of Qualitative Parameters of X-Ray Beams from Absorption
           Curves

      Abstract: A method for determining qualitative parameters of X-ray beams from absorption curves recorded using a linear multichannel detector is suggested. The direct problem of determining the absorption curves from given spectral distributions and the inverse problem of reconstructing radiation spectrum from the detected absorption curves have been resolved.

  • Assessment of Transcapillary Water Exchange in the Lungs by Active
           Radiometry

      Abstract: The possibility of noninvasive assessment of transcapillary water exchange in the lungs using stimulated microwave emission of the chest organs is discussed. The results of the study showed that the distribution of 1 GHz microwave emission of tissues probed using low-intensity electromagnetic waves at 65 GHz corresponded to the distribution of pulmonary blood flow. Calculations showed that the intensity of transcapillary water exchange in the lungs was distributed exponentially from the apices to the basal parts of the lungs. The distribution of the transcapillary water exchange was shown to vary according to the pulmonary perfusion gradient, which is indicative of a correlation between the parameters of pulmonary perfusion and the intensity of stimulated microwave emission of tissues at the frequency of 1 GHz. This correlation can be used for noninvasive assessment of pulmonary perfusion by active radiometry.

  • SQUID-Based Magnetometric Systems for Cardiac Diagnostics
    • Abstract: Magnetometric systems based on superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) were developed for bio-medical applications. The characteristics of existing SQUID systems that can be used in magnetocardiography (MCG) are discussed. The results of clinical MCG studies of a group of volunteers with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and a group of apparently healthy persons are presented as an example.

  • Complex Assessment of Coagulation Parameters in Pregnant Women Using a
           Fuzzy Classifier

      Abstract: A method for assessing the blood clotting system in pregnant women using a fuzzy classifier is described. Informative parameters were identified. Use of a gravitational algorithm for optimizing the parameters of the fuzzy classifier is described. Test results are presented.
