  • Neutron Activation Analysis as a tool to Determine Concentration of
           Selected Metals in Table Salt Mined from Benya Lagoon, Ghana

      Abstract: This project was funded by The Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) and the Management of the University of Cape Coast. It was sponsored as a Group-led Research involving researchers from the Department of Physics during the third call for proposals for Research Support Grants (RSGs) in 2018   Table salt is essential for life and if it contains metal impurities, it can affect the people that consume it. The Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem municipality makes salt by evaporating brine from the Benya Lagoon. Benya lagoon is a lagoon known to be polluted due to various anthropogenic activities within its environs. The concentration of eight metals, Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Manganese (Mn) Lead (Pb), Aluminium (Al), Copper (Cu), Magnesium (Mg), and Vanadium (V) have been determined in salt mined using water from the Benya lagoon. Salt samples were selected from five fixed-sampling stations and the concentrations of the metals determined using Neutron Activation Analysis. The ranges of the measured concentrations in the salts are as follows: 161.04-632.63 mg/kg for Al, 0.001-0.004 mg/kg for As, 1.50-2.70 mg/kg for Mg, 49.14-3883.00 mg/kg for Mg, 17.24-110.96 mg/kg for Mn, and 2.85-7.10 mg/kg for V. An assessment according to the metal concentration marked Mg as the most abundant, whiles Cd and Pb the least being 0.001 mg/kg at all the five stations. Principal Component Analysis also established Mg to be the most abundant metal, and used to identify two major clusters; Group 1 (stations 4 and 5) and Group 2 (stations 1, 2 and 3). Group 2 recorded higher intensities of Mg. Using Pearson's correlation coefficient, significant correlations were drawn between Al and Mg (r = - 0.862), Mg and Mn (r = 0.863) and Mn and V (r = 0.735), indicating the same or similar source inputs for each pair. Comparison with Codex Standard for Food Grade Salt showed that concentration values recorded for Al, Mg and Mn were above recommended limits. The contamination factor (CF) and degree of contamination (CD) confirmed this level of contamination for Al, Mg and Mn for all the five Stations, with Station 2 recording the highest Degree of Contamination. the least and corroborated salt from station 2 as most contaminated considering the combined toxicity at each station. Using an average daily salt intake of 6,000 mg, the mean daily intake of the elements when one consumes salt mined from the Benya lagoon was found to be above each element’s Upper Tolerable Limit of its Recommended Dietary Allowable for the various Life Stage Groups. The associated Hazard Index suggests the probability of adverse effects when consumed. High standard deviation values for Al and Mn indicated the non-uniform spatial distribution of the individual metal contaminates at the various stations.   • Industrial Wastes and Their Management Challenges in Ethiopia

      Abstract: Industrial wastes are useless wastes generated by industrial activities such as manufacturing, fabrication, construction, chemical plants and others. They are among harmful pollutants that affect the environment and water bodies through pollution. In Ethiopia, the rapid industrialization has led to generation of industrial wastes including hazardous ones. But, knowledge of these wastes and their impact on humans and the surrounding environment is very limited. In addition, to minimize the generation of wastes and develop pollution control measures this study has become imperative. Therefore, this review was conducted to examine the different types of industrial wastes, their impacts and their management challenges in Ethiopia. These issues were addressed through exploration of different studies conducted on industrial wastes in Ethiopia and by referring various journals. The study indicated industrial wastes and their impact on the environment were widely prevalent in Ethiopia especially, in Addis Ababa due to abundance of medium and large scale industries compared to other parts of the country. The sources for these wastes include textile and garment industries, tanning industries, beverage industries, industrial parks and others. The wastes from poorly managed industries are contributors to the pollution of both water bodies and different urban areas. Similarly, solid industrial waste management has become a serious challenge that affects the human welfare and the environment in different parts of the country. However, the management of these industrial wastes is inadequate due to absence of treatment plants for each industry, absence comprehensive, integrated and sustainable solid waste management plan, problem with rapid growth of population and insufficient resources to deal with industrial waste management issues.   • Flexural Properties of Unidirectional Enset Fiber Reinforced Epoxy
           Composite for Automotive Interior Application

      Abstract: Natural fiber-reinforced composites have attracted the attention of the research community mainly because they are turning out to be an alternative solution to the ever depleting petroleum sources and have additional advantages emanating from their low cost, low density, renewability, recyclability and biodegradability over glass fiber. In this regard, Enset plant is a main staple crop in southern and central Ethiopia where the pulp is fermented for food production but its strong fibers are now only used for local rope making or they are discarded. This paper presents the characteristics of Enset fiber under flexural loading conditions. So, a fiber reinforced composite specimen with different standard span length, fiber age, and fiber volume fraction has been considered. The experiment has been designed and analyzed using Optimal Experiment Design and Taguchi array platform on JMP and Minitab software package. After density of the fiber is measured by a Gas Pycnometery, different range of flexural loading and different loading condition (intermittent and one time) using Instron machine has been applied and the result has been analyzed and interpreted accordingly. This work, finally, reports the flexural properties of the fiber to be: Density: 1.4 g/cm3; Flexural strength at maximum load: 121.6Mpa-215.0Mpa, Mean strength at maximum load: 162.4; Mean strength at maximum extension: 96.47MP; Modulus: 8.081Gpa-12.02Gpa, Mean modulus: 10.903MPa. Variation and standard deviation amid the results are minimal because of the bundle fiber sharing the load and reinforcing each other. Keywords: Fiber, Enset, Processing, flexural

  • Chemical Characterization of Green Coffee Beans and Determining the Effect
           of Roasting Temperature on the Content of Caffeine

      Abstract: Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. The quality of coffee depends on post harvesting process, agricultural practices, agro ecology conditions and chemical composition of coffee beans. Hararghe is among the major coffee producing areas in Ethiopia. However, the chemical profiles of Hararghe coffee beans have never been reported. The objectives of the present study was to determine pH value, total acidity and total polyphenols of Hararghe green coffee beans and also evaluates the effect of roasting temperature on caffeine content. Fifteen coffee bean samples were collected from different areas of Hararghe, Ethiopia. Total polyphenols were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The pH value was measured by a pH meter. The total acidities were determined by titrating with NaOH. The caffeine content from roasted coffee beans was measured using a UV-Vis spectroscopy. The lowest (5.26) and the highest (5.66) pH values showed by the coffee bean samples collected from Jarso and Gurachae, respectively. On the contrary, the lowest (1.44 ml of NaOHg-1) and highest (2.3 NaOHg-1) total acidity values revealed by Gurache and Jarso coffee green beans, respectively. Likewise, the lowest and the highest total polyphenols content exhibited by Girawa (7.22 mg GAE/g) and Kobo (20.96 mg GAE/g) coffee beans, respectively. The caffeine content in coffee bean samples roasted at different temperatures varied from 2.36 (w/w %) to 6.09 (w/w %). The content of caffeine increased from low temperature - long ranged time roasted coffee beans to intermediate temperature - intermediate ranged time. However, it was gradually decreased from intermediate temperature - intermediate ranged time to high temperature - short ranged time.   • Mixed-Refining of BCTMP and LBKP for Lightweight Papers

      Abstract: Refining of pulp is an important stage on papermaking process in developing the fiber properties in order to meet the paper quality requirements. Separate refining is general practice implemented by industry which uses more than one kind of pulp. However, combined or mixed refining of two kinds of pulp has an advantageous especially in the view of energy. Mixed refining of BCTMP (Bleached Chemi-Thermo-Mechanical Pulp) and LBKP (Leaf Bleached Kraft Pulp) mixture has been investigated. The experiments were carried out at a mixture composition of 10% BCTMP and 90% LBKP compared to the same mixture composition of pulps which were refined separately, as well as 100% BCTMP and 100% LBKP. The result showed that the average fiber length of pulps mixture from mixed refining was the lowest, but its’ maximum fiber length was still quite good, closed to LBKP fibers. Compared to separate refining, mixed refining of pulps produced good sheet strength, while the other sheet properties were not significantly influenced.       Abstract: In the present study, synthesis and a comparison of properties (structural and mechanical)  of  Ni–B and Ni–B–Al2O3 and Ni-B-WO3 composite coatings have been presented  to  elucidate the beneficial role  of Al2O3 or WO3 addition in  binary Ni–B coatings. The  Ni–B– Al2O3 and Ni-B-WO3 coatings were synthesized by  adding Al2O3 or NaWO3 powdered particles into the  above  mentioned Ni–B  coating solution.  A significant improvement in mechanical properties has been observed by the addition of Al2O3 or WO3 additions.  This novel composite coating composition will be useful for wear and corrosion applications.
