      The novel germanium-iron cluster Ge 12 {Fe(CO) 3 } 8 ([small mu ]-I) 4 is presented, which contains a Ge 12 Fe 8 metal core with a central Ge 4 rectangle, two Ge 2 pairs, and four single Ge atoms. The cluster was made by ionic-liquid-mediated reaction of GeI 4 and Fe 2 (CO) 9 . The cluster is one of the largest intermixed Ge-Fe clusters and exhibits three different partial charges on the Ge 4 , Ge 2 , and single Ge moieties.
