  • Cyclic Electron Transport Around Photosystem II: Mechanisms and Methods of
           Study

    • Abstract: In contrast to the thylakoid cyclic electron transport around photosystem I, cyclic electron transport around photosystem II (CET-PSII) isa little studied process. The functional mechanisms of CET-PSII and methods of their study are discussed in the review. The positionoccupied by this process in the ensemble of the pathways of electron sink from photosystem II is discussed as well as the role of CET-PSIIin regulating the ATP/NADPH ratio and participation of cytochrome b-559 in CET-PSII. In green leaves of higher plants, CET-PSII may beunderestimated because of the limited possibilities of the standard methods most frequently used in photosynthesis study. In stomataguard cells of chlorophyll-deficient leaves, where the rate of non-cyclic electron transport is insufficient under blue light excitation,CET-PSII is of separate interest. A special attention should be paid to the photoacoustic methods of CET-PSII studies.

  • Phenotypic Characterization of the Arabidopsis ufm1 (Ubiquitin Fold
           Modifier) Gene Involved in Seed Development

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: With the completion of the Arabidopsis genome sequencing, the next challenge is the determination of gene function. Post-translational modifications of proteins by small polypeptide are implicated in plant growth and development. Ubiquitin fold modifier 1 is a member of the ubiquitin like protein family. While, the enzymatic conjugation cascade of ubiquitin fold modifier 1 has been elucidated in recent years, its biological role is still unknown. The present study focuses in elucidate the role of the ufm1 in plants development. Materials and Methods: The researchers performed analyses of the development of wild-type Columbia plants and mutants of the ubiquitin fold modifier 1 gene to identify and interpret phenotypic changes in plants and seeds. Data were statistically analyzed with the Info Stat software. Results: In this study, evidence suggesting that ubiquitin fold modifier 1 is involved in the normal development of the seeds. Conclusion: The ufm1 gene would affect the normal development of the seed, particularly of the embryo, causing high percentage of seed abortion.

  • Response of Physiological Characteristics, Seed Yield and Seed Quality of
           Quinoa under Difference of Nitrogen Fertilizer Management

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), a pseudocereal is a new introduction in Thailand. The production of high grain quality and quantity which depending on various growth factor. This study focusing on planting location, nitrogen management and cultivars. This experiment was aimed to evaluate the physiological characteristics, yield and seed quality of quinoa responses to different nitrogen fertilizer rates in Thailand climate condition. Methodology: The experimental design was split-split plot in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Main plot was planting locations (Pang-Da Research Station, Chiang Mai, Thailand (PD) and Prabathuaytom Royal Project Development Center Plant, Lamphun, Thailand (PB). Sub-plot was nitrogen fertilizer rate (0, 93.75, 187.5 and 312.5 kg N ha–1) and sub-sub plot was quinoa cultivar (Moradas and Verdes). Results: The study found that at PD location showed higher of Leaf Area Index (LAI), Leaf Area Ratio (LAR), seed yield and 1,000 seed weight (1.47, 31.97 cm2 g–1, 2144.20 kg ha–1 and 3.00 g, respectively) over than PB location. On the other hand, PB location showed higher of seed germination (97%), germination index (7.86) and low of mean germination time (3.12 days) when compared with PD location. Furthermore, nitrogen fertilizer rate at 93.75, 187.5 and 312.5 kg N ha–1 showed highest of Leaf Area Index (LAI) (1.04, 1.21 and 1.14, respectively) and Crop Growth Rate (CGR) (1.87, 1.85 and 1.48 mg cm–2 day–1, respectively). Then, nitrogen fertilizer rate at 93.75 and 187.5 kg N ha–1 showed highest of Relative Growth Rate (RGR) (35.54 and 32.59 mg g–1 day–1, respectively). Additionally, nitrogen fertilizer rate at 93.75, 187.5 and 312.5 kg N ha–1 resulted higher of seed yield (1872.00, 1726.70 and 1822.20 kg ha–1, respectively) than those control. Nitrogen fertilizer rate at 187.5 kg N ha–1 revealed higher of 1,000 seed weight at (3.02 g) than 93.75 kg N ha–1 and control. Therefore, Verdes cultivar provided the good physiological responses than those Moradas cultivar. Verdes cultivar showed higher of CGR ( 1.87 mg cm–2 day–1), RGR (31.80 mg g–1 day–1), seed yield (1892.80 kg ha–1) and 1,000 seed weight (2.97 g) over than Moradas cultivar. Conclusion: Finally, it could be concluded that at PD research station was high responded to that nitrogen fertilizer rates and cultivars for increased crop physiological growth and improved seed yield of quinoa production in Thailand.

  • Response of Pea Plants to Natural Bio-stimulants Under Soil Salinity
           Stress

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Salinity is one of the most important abiotic stresses causing a significant reduction of crop plants yield. Most arable lands were considered unsuitable for farming due to salinity. To ameliorative the adverse effect of salinity in pea (Pisum sativum L.), the present study investigated the effect of integrated application of some natural bio-stimulants used as foliar spray and/or seed soaking on growth, yield and endogenous physio-chemical constituents of pea growing under soil salinity stress. Materials and Methods: A randomized complete block , factorial (2-factor) experiment was conducted on pea (Pisum sativum L.) grown on saline soil (EC = 6.11-6.17 dS m–1) to assess Ascorbic Acid (AA) and Moringa oleifera Leaf Extract (MLE), used as foliar spray or seed soaking. Data were analyzed by a simple one way variance analysis (ANOVA). Results: The MLE or AA application, used as foliar spray or seed soaking, improved growth characteristics (i.e., shoot length, number of branches per plant and canopy dry weight) and physio-chemical attributes (i.e., RWC and MSI%, concentrations of chlorophylls a, b, carotenoids, total soluble sugars, free proline, contents of N, P, K and Ca) in pea plants. In addition, number of pods, pod weight and green pod yield were improved when compared with the controls (tap water foliar spray or seed soaking). Combined treatments of AA and MLE (i.e., seed soaking in AA+foliar spray with AA, seed soaking in AA+foliar spray with MLE, seed soaking in MLE+foliar spray with AA and seed soaking in MLE+foliar spray with MLE) significantly increased all above mentioned parameters compared to the control (seed soaking in tap water+foliar spray with tap water). Conclusion: The combined seed soaking in MLE+foliar spray with MLE treatment was found to be highly effective at improving the growth and yields of bean plants by alleviating the inhibitory effects of soil salinity stress.

  • Allelopathic Effect of Excoecaria agallocha L. Mangrove Leaf Leachate on
           Germination and Growth Behavior of Eleusine coracana (Finger Millet)

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Allelochemicals extracted from plant either through leaf or root can affect growth and productivity of surrounding plants and crops. The purpose of this study was to determine the morphological, physiological and yield responses of finger millet growing near the mangrove Excoecaria agallocha L. in coastal areas. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in the laboratory from November, 2016 to January, 2017 and used Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two factors, different concentrations (25, 50, 75 and 100% ) of leaf leachates of mangrove Excoecaria agallocha and two finger millet varieties (brown and white). Germination, shoot length, seedling dry matter, vigour index were recorded at 10 days after sowing in all the test crops. The photosynthetic pigments, soluble proteins, osmolyte proline and phenol content were also estimated. Further gas chromatographic analysis was also done for the identification of allelochemicals. Correlation coefficient was determined by plotting data from all treatments and the relation amongst seedling growth parameters and seedling vigour index was examined.
