      A new thiosemicarbazone-pyridylhydrazone tetradentate ligand featuring a pyridyl-4-vinylpyridine functional group that forms a stable complex with copper(ii) was prepared. The ligand could be radiolabelled with positron-emitting copper-64. The interaction of the copper(ii) complex with amyloid-β fibrils and plaques are described.

      This paper reports an eco-friendly and direct arylation of hydroxyaryls in water using photoinduced reactions. For example, π-expanded coumarins, compounds with potential optical applications, were synthesized in very high yield, without the use of toxic reagents, in a one-pot reaction. In addition, we demonstrate that the irradiation source (halogen lamp) can be efficiently replaced by an LED without altering the reaction yield.

      We synthesised and evaluated combining lipidation and conjugation to the cell-penetrating peptide TAT to increase peptide stability and brain permeability in vivo. Even though TAT–lipid combinations were stable in vivo and in vitro and permeated to the brain, they were haemolytic and resulted in acute toxic effects in vivo.

      Polycyclic quinolines, in particular seven- and eight-membered ring systems, have been found in several natural products and pharmaceuticals. Herein we present our endeavours towards the development of a new, concise, and efficient protocol for the preparation of a wide range of quinoline polycycles based around the promising biological activities of tetracyclic lactam scaffolds incorporating seven-, eight-, and nine-medium-sized N-heterocycles.

      Comparison of the bond lengths in [(Ph3As)2AuI] and [(Ph3As)3AuI] and related complexes show that they are generally consistent with the ‘gold is smaller than silver’ phenomenon caused by relativistic orbital contraction effects in gold, but the results also show that the magnitude of this effect is dependent on the nature of the metal–ligand bonds involved.

      A series of organoamidoantimony(iii) complexes of the general type [SbLMe3 − nCln] (n = 2, 1, 0) incorporating a bulky amido fluorine ligand tethered with an amino pendant arm, HLMe = p-HC6F4NH(CH2)2NMe2 have been successfully gained and fully characterised as monomers in the solid state highlighting a variety of coordination modes.

      The addition of surfactant molecules is an efficient and cost-effective method to tailor the microstructure of electrochromic films and consequently enhance their performance. High optical contrast of over 77 % at 550 nm, short switching time (5.62 s for bleaching and 7.34 s for coloration), and enhanced cycling durability were achieved for a film deposited with 6 mM SDS.

      Spongian diterpenes are a diverse group of compounds that have been isolated from sponges of the orders Dictyoceratida and Dendroceratida. Dendrilla rosea was chemically reinvestigated and three new diterpenes, aplyroseols 20–22, were isolated from the sponge.

      Fluorescent redox sensors are invaluable in uncovering the complex redox processes that underpin health and disease. This study investigates the use of nicotinamide, a derivative of vitamin B3, as a redox switch for the preparation of fluorescent sensors. The work identifies a new fluorescent sensor for hypoxic cells.

      A synthetic method to prepare 1-naphthyl ketones from gold(i)-catalysed oxidative cycloisomerisation of 1,6-diyne acetates is described. The proposed mechanism involves cyclopropenation–cycloreversion of the 1,6-diyne motif initiated by a [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement. This is followed by nucleophilic attack of the ensuing gold carbenoid species by a molecule of water and autoxidation to give the aromatic product.

      Structural studies of the adducts of lanthanide picrates with dimethylacetamide (dma) and N-methylpyrrolidinone (nmp) add further variety to the nature of simple O-donor ligand complexes of these picrates. Polymorphism is readily detected in the dma complexes, while, with the heavier lanthanides, nmp causes partial detachment of the picrate ligands.

Frances’ name has been used as an amino acid sequence (FS), and its structure in micelles and whether FS is interacting with neutral anionic lipid bilayers were investigated using Frances’ favourite biophysical technique, NMR spectroscopy.

      Structural studies of adducts of the lanthanide picrates with hexamethylphosphoramide (hmpa) and octamethylpyrophosphoramide (ompa) provide significant contrasts with those of analogous adducts with dimethylsulfoxide and trimethylphosphate. Adducts of hmpa show a transition from 9-coordinate (hmpa)3 to 8-coordinate (hmpa)2 species, while ompa displaces one picrate from the primary coordination sphere.

      Cu-based 2D MOF nanosheets are fabricated as sensing nanoplatforms for DNA detection. The representative Cu(1,4-NDC) nanosheets provide good sensitivity and selectivity towards target DNA (T1 and T2) or a target DNA mixture in the presence with dye-labelled probe DNA (P1 and P2), which is evaluated by fluorescence intensity.

      Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an almost ubiquitous metalloenzyme that catalyses the disproportionation of superoxide (O2•−) to molecular oxygen (O2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The crystal structure of the manganese SOD from Geobacillus stearothermophilus was determined many years ago but the final structure, completed with modern processing and analysis tools, has only just been made available.
