  • An evaluation of readiness assessment tests in a college classroom: Exam
           performance, attendance, and participation.
    • Authors: Heinicke; Megan R.; Zuckerman, Carrie K.; Cravalho, Danielle A.
Abstract: This study evaluated the use of frequent online assessments due prior to lecture, known as readiness assessment tests (RATs), in 2 sections of an upper-division psychology course. We compared the efficacy of RATs on students’ exam performance, in-class participation, and attendance using a nonequivalent control group design. We also measured students’ self-report of studying and preference for RATs using a satisfaction survey. Results indicated significantly higher average unit exam grades, a higher level of student attendance, and more reports of active study habits for students exposed to RATs compared with the control group, but we did not find significant differences in student participation. Students also reported a preference for RATs over frequent in-class quizzes. Overall, our results support that RATs may be an effective and preferred assessment strategy to improve students’ overall exam grades and promote active study habits. Recommendations for assessment in higher education and future research are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Increasing cultural understanding and diversity in applied behavior
           analysis.
    • Authors: Fong; Elizabeth Hughes; Ficklin, Seana; Lee, Helen Y.
Abstract: In recent years, the demands for behavior analysis to serve consumers with diverse cultural backgrounds have significantly increased. The field is in great need of culturally competent behavior analysts who can integrate appropriate cultural considerations to their programs. The field of behavior analysis can address this growing need by fostering cultural competency in professional training through increasing relevant training opportunities and the development of culture- and diversity-relevant educational curricula and materials, and by supporting efforts to increase the number of ethnically and racially diverse behavior-analytic workforces in academic and professional settings. Together, we can promote cultural awareness and cultural competencies in professional behavior-analytic training. However, there are challenges for fostering culturally diverse professionals, especially during the academic training phase, which include language barriers, negative perceptions about cultures that are different from one’s own, microaggressions in work and academic settings, lack of mentoring opportunities, adverse campus climates, and tokenism. Some potential ways to address such challenges include the development of culture- and diversity-related curricula, mentoring opportunities, and greater support for minority and culturally diverse students and faculty. The purpose of this commentary was to increase awareness about the importance of cultural understanding and competency, as well as a diverse workforce in the field of behavior analysis, a necessary step to better serve those consumers from multicultural backgrounds. • Behavioral skills training for graduate students providing cognitive
behavior therapy to children with autism spectrum disorder.
    • Authors: Hassan; Mahfuz; Thomson, Kendra M.; Khan, Maria; Burnham Riosa, Priscilla; Weiss, Jonathan A.
Abstract: Despite growing literature in evidence-based practice (EBP) for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), there is limited research on best practices for training the practitioners that provide EBP. In traditional clinical psychology, training often includes self-study of intervention materials followed by ongoing supervision. Although behavioral skills training (BST) has been shown to be efficacious for training skills across many environments, it has yet to be evaluated in training clinical psychology graduate students to implement an intervention for youth with ASD. In a concurrent modified multiple baseline (multiple probe) design, we evaluated the impact of a brief (3-hr) BST session on graduate student therapists’ implementation of a cognitive–behavioral therapy intervention meant to improve emotion regulation in children with ASD. Therapists showed modest additional improvements from baseline (self-study of the intervention manuals alone) in terms of the accuracy and quality of intervention delivery after receiving BST. Additionally, all therapists preferred the BST training session to self-study and said they would recommend BST to other practitioners. Future research should evaluate what specific training components result in the most improvement in therapist behavior and what, if any, added clinical significance therapist improvement serves for clients. • Reinforcing productivity in a job-skills training program for unemployed
           substance-abusing adults.
    • Authors: Subramaniam; Shrinidhi; Everly, Jeffrey J.; Silverman, Kenneth
Abstract: Chronically unemployed adults may benefit from intensive job-skills training; however, training programs do not always reliably engage participants in mastering skills. This study examined effects of voucher reinforcement for performance on a job-skills training program in the therapeutic workplace. Participants were 4 unemployed, substance abusing adults who earned monetary vouchers for working on programs targeting typing skills. Participants were exposed to 2 payment conditions that differed in whether or not pay was dependent on performance in a within-subject reversal design. In the productivity-pay condition, participants earned $8.00 per hour for attending the workplace plus a bonus for performance. In the base-pay condition, participants were paid an hourly wage that was equivalent to the total hourly earnings from the previous productivity-pay condition. Participants completed less work on the typing programs in the base-pay than the productivity-pay condition, but the amount of time spent in the workroom and the accuracy and rate of typing were not affected by the pay manipulation. All participants reported preferring base pay over productivity pay. Explicit reinforcement of productivity maintains consistent work in training programs, but more aspects of productivity pay need to be refined for effective, efficient, and socially valid implementation with unemployed, substance-abusing adults. • Video modeling with voice-over instructions to teach implementation of the
           picture exchange communication system.
    • Authors: Martocchio; Nicole; Rosales, Rocío
Abstract: Video modeling is a training method with empirical support for teaching trainees to implement a variety of behavior analytic procedures, however currently there is no published research examining the use of video modeling to teach implementation of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). The purpose of the present study was to use video modeling to teach implementation of Phases 1–4 of PECS to university students who expressed interest in working with populations for which PECS would be appropriate. Three undergraduate students viewed video modules composed of visual examples, voiceover explanation, and text describing each step in the protocol for each phase, then implemented each phase with a confederate learner. A multiple probe across participants design was used. Results showed that all participants achieved mastery-level performance in each phase following video modeling, however 1 participant required feedback from the experimenter to attain mastery in Phase 1. Follow-up probes conducted 2–3 weeks following completion of training indicate that performance may not remain at mastery level over time following video modeling alone, further suggesting a feedback component might be necessary. Future work should conduct generalization probes with actual learners with disabilities, and explore the use of computer-based training programs that incorporate a feedback component. • A behavioral phenomenological inquiry of maker identity.
    • Authors: Davis; Don; Mason, Lee L.
Abstract: Currently, researchers and educators are dedicating substantive energy to investigating and discussing the potential affordances of makerspaces to support students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. In particular, proponents indicate that broadening participation with makerspaces and the maker movement may increase participation by underrepresented demographic groups in STEM fields. However, many questions have arisen as to whether, how, and to what extent makerspaces are supporting participation by students underrepresented in STEM fields. This study presents an initial investigation of makerspace participation by middle school age girls in a central Texas makerspace. Specifically, this study takes a closer look at students’ verbal behaviors when explaining their participation and interest in the makerspace activities as well as the connections to students’ previous interactional histories that are both directly and indirectly evidenced. Analyses of participant interviews suggest potential benefits to identifying and purposefully facilitating relational frames that could potentially induce greater interest and concomitant participation with formal and informal STEM related content. • Trial-based functional analyses as basis for elopement intervention.
    • Authors: Lambert; Joseph M.; Finley, Crystal I.; Caruthers, Carmen E.
Abstract: Few studies have connected functional analysis (FA) outcomes to function-based interventions for elopement. We conducted 2 trial-based FAs of the elopement of a 10-year-old boy diagnosed with autism. During the first, latency-to-elopement was the primary dependent variable. During the second, we tracked the occurrence/nonoccurrence of elopement in a 2-component compound-schedules preparation. Outcomes of both FAs indicated identical functions and informed an effective intervention. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Reducing attention maintained bizarre speech in an adult woman.
    • Authors: McDonough; Melyssa R.; Johnson, Ashley K.; Waters, Bobbi J.
Abstract: Differential reinforcement for alternative behaviors and extinction for bizarre speech were used as a behavior intervention protocol for a 45-year-old woman living in a residential group-home setting. A functional behavior assessment consisting of behavioral interviews and direct observation suggested bizarre speech was maintained by attention from staff. Partial interval recording method was used to assess percentage of intervals engaged in the target behavior. Results showed a decrease in intervals engaged in bizarre speech from baseline (52%) to follow-up (4%). (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
