  • The importance of a deeper knowledge of the history and theoretical
           foundations of behavior analysis: 1863–1960.
    • Abstract: The present article argues for the greater examination of the importance of studying the historical foundations of the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA). The increased volume of students in the behavior analysis field over the last 10 years underscores the need to emphasize the historical, scientific, and philosophical foundations that have made the field so strong. The philosophy of science of behaviorism and ABA was linked to several disciplines initially, and evolved into a role in the field of psychology. A detailed justification for the study of the history and philosophy of a science of behavior is presented and will flow into the earliest origins of behaviorism and the maturation of the field. Current financial contingencies have resulted in the misperception that the ABA field is primarily targeted at behavioral challenges related to the mitigation of autism spectrum disorder. As a consequence, there has been a departure from the philosophical and conceptual aspects of behavior analysis. A departure from the philosophical and scientific underpinnings of the field can prove problematic in the long run. This article will detail the contributions of the pioneers in the field, and end at the beginning of the second generation of behavior therapy in the early 1960s. Discussion of the foundations of behavior analysis will help new practitioners and students of behavior analysis to better appreciate the intellectual depth of the field. • Effects of programmed discriminative stimuli in a functional analysis on
language disruptions in older adults with neurocognitive disorder.
    • Abstract: Behavior problems such as language disruptions are increasing in conjunction with the population of elderly adults with dementia in nursing homes. However, few studies have included analyses appropriate for adults with dementia. In the current study, a multielement functional analysis was conducted with 2 elderly adults who exhibit language disruptions to determine whether the inclusion of programmed discriminative stimuli resulted in differential responding. Once differential responding was achieved, a functionally derived intervention was examined using a reversal design. For both participants, programmed discriminative stimuli resulted in greater differential responding between test and control conditions. For 1 of the 2 participants, only the functional analysis with programmed discriminative stimuli identified a functional relation and led to a function-based treatment. Implications for using discriminative stimuli during functional analyses will be discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Presentation of preferred stimuli as an intervention for aggression in a
           person with dementia.
    • Abstract: Aggressive behaviors in elderly nursing home residents increase the risk of injury and stress for both residents and staff. Aggression is commonly treated with antipsychotic medications despite the risks of serious iatrogenic effects. This single-case design study evaluated a nonpharmacological intervention that involved making a preferred item continuously available and regularly orienting the participant to that item during caregiving sessions. The presentation of preferred stimuli was effective in reducing both physical and verbal aggression in the resident. The findings are significant, given the paucity of studies on nonpharmacological, restraint-free interventions for aggressive behaviors in elderly persons with dementia. • Finding your way home: A systematic investigation of shadowboxes on room
           recognition in memory care.
    • Abstract: Dementia care residents frequently experience difficulty locating their bedrooms, which creates challenges for both residents and staff. Previous research suggests that hanging items outside individual bedrooms can help facilitate room finding. This project involved a multiphase study designed to systematically investigate whether recognition and personal relevance of showcased items facilitates better room finding. Participants (n = 6) included older adults (Mage = 89.67, SD = 3.20) with moderate to severe cognitive impairment living in dementia care communities; data collection was terminated before evaluation of the intervention was possible with 1 participant due to adverse health events. Accuracy of room selection was measured through direct observation in a baseline condition (i.e., empty shadow box), then participants were randomly assigned to either personalized (i.e., well-recognized pictures, names, and items) or landmark (i.e., distinctive but not self-referent items) experimental conditions. Nonconcurrent multiple baseline across participants single-subject research methodology was used to empirically evaluate the intervention. Significant improvements in room finding were observed for 50% of participants across experimental conditions. The results suggest that distinctive landmark properties of shadow boxes are critical in improving room finding and that landmarks alone (without personal identifiers) are sufficient for some people. Anecdotal evidence suggests that personalization of boxes is preferred by families and staff and is more congruent with person-centered care. • Memory deficits in older adults: Evaluating spaced retrieval with multiple
           probe techniques.
    • Abstract: Difficulties in recalling the names of individuals is a common behavioral symptom of neurocognitive disorder. A number of behavioral strategies have been proposed to improve memory deficits, including spaced retrieval, an intervention that emphasizes delayed recall of target information. Unfortunately, many of the studies that report beneficial effects of spaced retrieval use a very limited range of outcome measures, thus calling into question the magnitude and generality of any reported memory improvement. This study reports on the impact of spaced retrieval using 4 older adults with cognitive impairment living in an assisted living facility. All participants demonstrated difficulty naming and recalling names of staff members at the facility who provided care. A replicated ABC design with embedded probes was used to evaluate the effects of spaced retrieval on the acquisition, delayed recall, and generalization of naming a target staff member. Probe measures included a nonidentity matching-to-sample task, naming in the presence of untrained photographs of the target staff member, and naming during brief video presentations of the target staff member. Nonexample presentations were also interspersed. Spaced retrieval resulted in within-session increases in recall for all participants, and also resulted in minimal evidence of generalization across probe measures, including live-person probes. Modified spaced retrieval interventions were then employed to address stimulus control deficits. These modified conditions resulted in further gains in delayed recall performance, as well as improved generalization across probes. These results are discussed in the context of previous research with spaced retrieval. Future directions are also discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Preference assessments in older adults with dementia.
    • Abstract: As cognitive impairment progresses, individuals with dementia gradually decline in activity engagement due to difficulties initiating leisure activities independently and effectively communicating their preferences. Low activity engagement has negative implications for mood and quality of life. To address this difficulty, preference assessments (PA) can be effectively used to determine the likes and dislikes of individuals with dementia. The present study assessed the utility of PA and the stability of preferences over time (i.e., 1 and 6 months after initial assessment) in a sample of older adults with dementia (Mage = 82.25 years, SD = 6.52 years). Results supported the use of PA as an assessment procedure to assess preferences for items or leisure activities in adults with moderate to severe dementia. The majority of participants exhibited stable patterns of preference over 1 to 6 months with correlation coefficients exceeding rs = .50, suggesting that preferences may remain stable for some individuals with dementia. Research and clinical implications of the use of PA in this population are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Assessing the validity of engagement-based and selection-based preference
assessments in elderly individuals with neurocognitive disorder.
    • Abstract: The majority of the preference assessment literature focuses on applications with children and adults with developmental disabilities. To date, relatively few studies have focused on research related to preference and reinforcer assessments with the elderly population with cognitive impairment, despite the need for programmed access to preferred and reinforcing stimuli (Raetz, LeBlanc, Baker, & Hilton, 2013). This study assessed the predictive validity of engagement- and selection-based preference assessment formats with 2 types of reinforcer assessments: engagement-based and task-based. Three older adults, who attended an adult day program and who had a formal diagnosis of neurocognitive disorder, participated in the study. The first participant’s most preferred items in the each preference assessment were validated in both reinforcer assessments. The second participant’s most preferred items from each preference assessment were validated with the engagement-based reinforcer assessment, but the task-based assessment produced variable responding. The third participant’s most preferred items from the MSWO were validated with both reinforcer assessments, but the most preferred item from the FO was validated with only the engagement-based reinforcer assessment. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for preference and reinforcer assessments and their utility with the population of elderly adults with cognitive impairments. • Considerations for preference and reinforcer assessments with older adults
           with developmental disabilities.
    • Abstract: Assessing preference among older adults is an integral part to effective and therapeutic programming. Although much of the research on preference assessments in this population has focused on typically developing older adults, there is a dearth of research focusing on older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (Braddock, 1999; LeBlanc & Matson, 1997). The following case conceptualization addresses some challenges to identifying preferred stimuli and assessing reinforcers among older adults with disabilities and demonstrates the utility of a practitioner model to overcoming these barriers (Karsten, Carr, & Lepper, 2011).
