  • Reporting participant characteristics in intervention articles published
           in five behavior-analytic journals, 2013–2015.
    • Authors: Li; Anita; Wallace, Luchara; Ehrhardt, Kristal E.; Poling, Alan
Abstract: The current Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association indicates that the sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disability status of research participants should be reported. The present study found that most (90.6%) of the manuscripts describing clinical interventions and published from 2013–2015 in five journals sympathetic to behavior analysis reported the sex of participants. Fewer such articles described participants’ disability status (69.1%), race/ethnicity (10.7%), or socioeconomic status (2.8%). Although there is general agreement that participant characteristics likely to influence responsiveness to the intervention being examined should be reported, there apparently is no agreement as to whether race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disability status constitute such characteristics. The purpose of this article is to encourage authors, reviewers, editors, and readers of behavior-analytic research articles to consider which characteristics of participants merit reporting and the consequences of not consistently reporting those characteristics. • Effects of array size on preschoolers’ preference and engagement: A
           behavioral translation of choice overload.
    • Authors: Miller; Jonathan R.; Kaplan, Brent A.; Reed, Derek D.; White, Laura D.
Abstract: Recent social psychology and consumer behavior research has suggested that an abundance of options in choice contexts can have detrimental effects on decision making—a phenomenon termed choice overload. This investigation sought to use behavior analytic procedures to examine the effects of numerous options on the toy preference of 3 preschoolers. Toy engagement was assessed under repeated free-operant arrangements in which participants accessed arrays of either 6 or 30 toys for 2 min. Results showed that relative to the 6-item array, preference for the most preferred item was diminished and preference for the 3 least preferred items were elevated with the 30-item array. Additionally, engagement with toys in the 30-item array tended to occur more frequently but for shorter durations, suggesting an overall decrease in the reinforcing value of each toy when presented in a larger array. A behavioral interpretation of choice overload is offered, as well as potential implications for research and practice. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Chart goals for behavior analysis.
    • Authors: Deochand; Neil; Costello, Mack S.; Fuqua, R. Wayne
Abstract: Charts play a significant role within the interpretation of scientific data. This article examines some inconsistencies in data display methods used in Behavior Analysis: Research and Practice and the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and suggests that adopting some chart goals could improve future graphing practices. • Differential versus differentiated reinforcement.
    • Authors: van Haaren; Frans
Abstract: We use the term differential reinforcement of (X) to describe procedures that provide reinforcement for 1 class of responses to the exclusion of all others. Differential reinforcement of (X) procedures have been used (1) to shape responses that vary along various dimensions and (2) to reduce the frequency of problem behavior. In both cases the term has been appended (X) to include a description of the response class which is reinforced to the exclusion of others (differential reinforcement of response latency, low-rate behavior, other behavior, incompatible behavior, etc.). In recent years, some have started to use the term differential reinforcement to describe procedures in which reinforcers that vary along some dimension (large, small) are presented contingent on 2 or more different response classes (independent, prompted). This use of the term differential reinforcement obfuscates scientific discourse and should be avoided. I suggest that we use the term differentiated reinforcement to properly distinguish this procedure from other procedures in which 1 class of responses is reinforced and all others are not. • Evaluating emergent naming relations through representational drawing in
individuals with developmental disabilities using the PEAK-E curriculum.
    • Authors: Dixon; Mark R.; Belisle, Jordan; Rowsey, Kyle E.; Speelman, Ryan C.; Stanley, Caleb R.; Kime, Dena
Abstract: Naming has been described behavior analytically as the ability to engage in both speaker and listener behavior as they relate to stimuli in the real world, where speaker behavior is often demonstrated in the form of tacting and listener behavior in the form of selection-based responding. The present study sought to evaluate representational drawing as an alternative to selection-based listener responding where the listener behavior is unprompted. A multiple-baseline with an embedded multiple probe design was conducted across 3 individuals with developmental disabilities, and tact/drawing stimuli included unfamiliar animal blends. The results suggested that, following tact training, all of the participants demonstrated the untrained emergence of representational drawing of the blended animal pictures. The procedures and stimuli in the present study were taken from the PEAK-E curriculum, allowing for potentially easier replication by practitioners and researchers. • The frequency profile: An informative method for graphing the behavior of
individuals post hoc or in real time.
    • Authors: Epstein; Robert; Mejia, Jonathan; Robertson, Ronald E.
Abstract: We describe an informative type of line graph, the frequency profile, which allows a single behavior, multiple behaviors, or the specific behavioral patterns of individuals to be graphed either post hoc or in real time from digital data. The informativeness of the frequency profile curves can be optimized through the adjustment of three parameters—window size (number of adjacent time intervals in each calculation), step size (time increment by which the window is advanced), and resolution (duration of the basic observational time interval). At extreme values, the parameters yield graphical representations that have long been in use—interval recording (at one extreme) and B. F. Skinner’s cumulative record (at another extreme). Intermediate values yield informative overlapping curves that resemble probability curves, revealing (a) overall behavioral tendencies at any point in time, (b) periods of competition among different behaviors, and (c) transitions from one behavior to another. Predictive models that generate probability curves can be compared both visually and statistically with frequency profile curves. A clear graphical presentation of the moment-to-moment behavior of an individual subject should have numerous applications in business, education, law enforcement, military, and other settings in which it is advantageous to monitor individual performance continuously, in clinical settings in which subtle behavioral changes in individual clients are analyzed, or in research settings in which the behavior of individual human or animal subjects is tracked or simulated. Examples of frequency profiles with both nonhumans and humans are presented, along with statistical comparisons between a frequency profile and predicted probabilities. • Computerized behavioral skills training with selection-based instruction
and lag reinforcement schedules for responses to interview questions.
    • Authors: O'Neill; John; Rehfeldt, Ruth Anne
Abstract: This study evaluated the efficacy of a computerized behavioral skills training (CBST) program for teaching responses to interview skills by adolescents and young adults with learning disabilities. The package consisted of instructional videos, video modeling, rehearsal, feedback, and selection-based instruction. A multielement design was incorporated within each tier of the multiple-probe design such that each question was pseudorandomly assigned to a CBST condition or a CBST plus selection-based instruction condition. Data suggest that the CBST program was effective in promoting accurate topography-based responses to interview questions regardless of whether selection-based instruction was included. However, CBST plus selection-based instruction may have been the optimal condition for 4 out of 5 participants. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Evaluating the work of applied animal behaviorists as applied behavior
           analysis.
    • Authors: Gray; Jenna M.; Diller, James W.
Abstract: Within the field of behavior analysis, there is a divide between human and nonhuman animal research and application. Although behavior-analytic techniques could be used with nonhuman animals, to become a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA), nonhuman animal practice is not allowed. Animal behavior professionals (e.g., certified applied animal behaviorists, certified professional dog trainers, animal behavior consultants) and BCBAs completed a 31-item survey to evaluate the extent to which their professional activities meet the definition of applied behavior analysis and the extent to which they are consistent with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) task list. Although there are differences in the techniques being implemented, the survey yielded more similarities than differences in the work of these two groups of professionals. Both animal behavior professionals and BCBAs are engaging in work that meets the standards of the BACB’s task list and the definition of applied behavior analysis. • A review of resurgence literature with human participants.
    • Authors: Kestner; Kathryn M.; Peterson, Stephanie M.
Abstract: Resurgence is the reemergence of a previously reinforced behavior when an alternative source of reinforcement is discontinued or decreased (Lattal & St. Peter Pipkin, 2009). Lattal and St. Peter Pipkin (2009) published a review in which they discussed the applied relevance of the resurgence literature, which was largely composed of investigations studying nonhuman subjects at the time. There has since been an increase in resurgence research with human participants. The purpose of the current paper is to review published investigations of resurgence with humans since Lattal and St. Peter Pipkin. The current review includes summaries of 5 human operant studies and 8 studies involving clinically relevant responding. A discussion provides implications as they relate to clinical practice and suggestions for future research. Overall, investigations related to resurgence seem to be a fruitful and socially significant focus for behavioral researchers. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Evaluation of pour training procedures for college students.
    • Authors: Metz; Emily R.; Kohn, Carolynn S.; Schultz, Nicole R.; Bettencourt, Katrina
Abstract: We assessed the effects of (a) stimulus fading, (b) verbal feedback, and (c) superimposition training on college students’ skill acquisition, maintenance, and generalization of accurate pours of a standard serving of beer (12 oz). Participants were 18 college students who failed to pour within 10% of a standard serving of beer (less than 10.75 oz or greater than 13.25 oz) during baseline assessment. Thirteen participants were assigned to 1 of 3 training methods (verbal feedback, stimulus fading, or superimposition) and were assessed immediately following training and at 1-week and 30-day follow-ups. Five participants were included in a control group. Compared with the control group, all 3 training methods were effective in improving the accuracy of college students’ pours of standard servings immediately following training; most participants showed skill maintenance and generalization at 1-week follow-up. About half of the participants, particularly those that received 2 types of training, showed skill maintenance and generalization at 30-day follow-ups. Results support the use of pour training in conjunction with 1 or more specific feedback training strategies as an important component of university alcohol education.
