  • Introduction to the special issue: Behavior analysis in educational
           settings.
    • Abstract: Provides an introduction to the special issue in the Behavior Consultation and Therapy section of Behavior Analysis: Research and Practice. This particular issue will be addressing important areas in educational settings. Claire St. Peter, PhD, served as the special issue editor of this inaugural issue. The articles in this issue address behavior analysis in education in three domains: replicating procedures established in controlled evaluations in classrooms, expanding access to behavioral intervention, and evaluating variations of procedures designed for school use. By demonstrating that behavior-analytic research has much to contribute to best practices in education, hopefully the articles in this special issue will inform practice in schools, as well as serve as a springboard for more behavioral research in educational contexts.   • Effects of the Good Behavior Game on individual student behavior.
    • Abstract: The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is a classwide group contingency that has proven effective at reducing disruptive classroom behavior across elementary and secondary grade levels (Flower, McKenna, Bunuan, Muething, & Vega, 2014). The vast majority of GBG research has reported the effects at the classwide level. There have been relatively few evaluations of the effects of the GBG on individual student behavior. The current study examined the effects of the GBG at the individual student level for 12 participants nominated as most disruptive by their teachers across 2 kindergarten classes and 1 first-grade class. The majority of participants exhibited consistently less disruptive behavior during the GBG compared to baseline (BL). One participant’s disruptive behavior persisted throughout all phases. These findings suggest that the GBG may prevent teachers from creating unnecessary individualized interventions for some students and may also help identify students who require individualized interventions.   • Preschool life skills using the response to intervention model with
           preschoolers with developmental disabilities.
    • Abstract: Teaching young children key social skills in preschool can increase prosocial behavior and reduce classroom behavior problems. Previous preschool life skills (PLS) programming has taught young children to request teacher assistance and tolerate delays or denials in the delivery of materials, friendship skills, and functional communication skills. The purpose of the current study was to extend the PLS literature by assessing the level of instruction necessary to teach children with autism spectrum disorders and developmental disabilities to respond to their name, request attention and assistance, and tolerate delays and denials. A multiple-baseline across-behaviors design was used to demonstrate the effects of instruction, differential reinforcement, and error-correction procedures that systematically increased in intrusiveness as necessary for participants to acquire skills. Five participants acquired skills using general instructional strategies, and 3 participants required individualized instruction to learn skills. The training required varied across participants and skills. Prebaseline and postmastery probes were conducted in the classroom with adults and peers to test for generalization.   • Using behavioral skills training to teach high school students to
           implement discrete trial training.
    • Abstract: Discrete trial training (DTT) is widely recognized as an evidence-based intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; National Autism Center, 2010), but it is not typically provided to students with ASD in school settings (Stahmer et al., 2015), presumably due to personnel resource limitations. By training students to implement intervention protocol, peer-mediated strategies provide schools with an abundant pool of potential interventionists, and peer-mediated DTT has been demonstrated effective at the elementary school level (Radley, Dart, Furlow, & Ness, 2015). Because DTT is a relatively intense intervention to deliver, previous researchers have demonstrated the need for equally intense training procedures (e.g., Behavioral Skills Training; Sarokoff & Sturmey, 2004) to ensure high levels of implementation fidelity with adult interventionists. However, it is not clear if similarly rigorous training procedures are necessary when peer-mediated DTT is implemented. The purpose of this study was to replicate Sarokoff and Sturmey (2004) to determine if high school students were able to implement peer-mediated DTT with high integrity after a brief didactic training or if an additional, more intense, BST package was necessary. A multiple baseline design across 4 high school seniors was used to examine the effects of both training paradigms on the treatment integrity of a complex DTT protocol. The results support the findings of Sarokoff and Sturmey (2004) by demonstrating that BST was necessary to produce acceptable levels of integrity.   • Increasing positive and decreasing negative teacher responses to student
           behavior through training and feedback.
    • Abstract: Teachers tasked with educating students in an inclusive environment must effectively work with ongoing behavior issues in the classroom. Increasing teacher praise statements while reducing negative statements provides one method for increasing appropriate student behavior and reducing and potentially preventing inappropriate student behavior. The current study examines the effects of professional development and daily e-mail feedback on teacher-initiated positive and negative behaviors in an inclusive elementary school setting. Four elementary teachers in a rural school district participated. Teacher behavior-specific praise increased and negative statements decreased for 3 of 4 teachers, maintaining results 2–3 weeks after intervention ended for 3 of 4 teachers. E-mail feedback was introduced as a novel component of changing teacher behavior.   • Evaluation of response interruption and redirection during school and
           community activities.
    • Abstract: Research has shown that response interruption and redirection (RIRD) is an effective treatment for vocal stereotypy. To date, no studies have evaluated RIRD in naturally occurring activities. Therefore, the primary purpose of the current study was to evaluate signaled RIRD in the treatment of vocal stereotypy in a concurrent multiple-baseline-across-two-school-activities design. Another purpose was to evaluate the effects of the established stimulus cue and intermittent implementation of RIRD. Results showed that RIRD and a modified version were effective at decreasing vocal stereotypy across all activities; however, the stimulus cue alone was ineffective in an untrained context.   • Self-and-match system suppresses vocal stereotypy during independent work.
    • Abstract: Vocal stereotypy can have a number of functions, and interventions have been developed to address individual functions. However, when vocal stereotypy is maintained by multiple reinforcers, interventions can be countertherapeutic when combined. The current intervention was designed to help reduce vocal stereotypy maintained by attention and potentially automatic reinforcement. The “Self-and-Match” system, a commercially available self-monitoring intervention, was used to address both functions. After a specified duration of independent work, both the participant and the researcher marked whether target behavior occurred. The student could receive a preferred item if enough matches were recorded. Once significant reductions in vocal stereotypy were achieved, the intervention was faded and the behavior remained at low levels using typical classroom-management practices.
