Abstract Systematic and naturalistic case studies offer an opportunity to understand processes that promote therapeutic change from the deep analysis of the therapist-patient interactions. Similarly, they provide help for understanding processes that do not achieved their therapeutic goals. The aim of this study is to integrate technical, therapeutic process variables and therapeutic alliance measures to understand a therapeutic process that resulted in premature discontinuation. Method: systematic and naturalistic case study conducted from a Tool for Evaluating Psychoanalytic Sessions (IASP), Therapeutic Cycles Model (TCM), Psychotherapy Process Q-Set (PQS) and Working Alliance Inventory - observational version (WAI-O). Results: It was found that the variables are not presented in a linear fashion, revealing the complexity of psychotherapy. It was found that the patient was unengaged with the therapeutic process and there was evidence of ruptures of the therapeutic alliance. Three sessions were not adhered to the psychoanalytic technique. Implications of the findings and limitations of the study are discussed.

Abstract Critical thinking is a relevant ability nowadays in higher education, but there is a lack of consensus on its definitions and assessment instruments. This article offers a conceptual and methodological review about the instruments used to measure critical thinking, in order to generate a discussion that allows a better understanding and appreciation of the aspects that are considered in this skill. The methodology consisted of a systematic review of studies in databases, selecting 31 studies out of 97 founded, and 8 of them for deep analysis; atopic content analysis in definitions and test characteristics is also used. Results show the existence of many differences in definitions and assessments of critical thinking, with a variety of tests and little consensus on the measured components. The need of an integrative model of Critical Thinking, considering cognitive, metacognitive and dispositional skills is discussed.

Abstract The objective of this work is to reflect the types of Fear, Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Academic Achievement (AA,) and the influence over each other, of students in the city of Ceuta. We focused on 1186 participants; 42.2% boys and 57.8% girls; of which 58.9% are Muslims and 41.1% Christians. The techniques used are the FSSC-II, adapted by Ascensio, et al. (2012), the Matesanz (2006) adaptation of FSS, a similar adaptation of Mayer et al. (2009) MSCEIT, as well as the student’s grades. The results show medium levels of Fear and AA and medium to high of EI. These are influenced by age, gender, customs/religion and socioeconomic and cultural status. We found a relationship between EI and AA, which increases when EI levels are higher. We have also found a negative relationship between Fear and EI and between Fear and AA.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the social representations of the elderly about family. A qualitative research was conducted, guided by the Theory of Social Representations. Participants were 14 elderly retired people, aged 65-86 years and residents in the western region of São Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The data were analyzed by the Descending Hierarchical Classification, with support of IRAMUTEQ software, and posteriorly with the Content Analysis Technique. Two themes have been identified from the participants’ discourse: family education and losses (departure of sons, and changes and death). It was considered that the role of the elderly within the family context depends on the sense they have of the aging process itself. In active and autonomous old age the family needs to be protected and educated. In fragilized elderly the sense of family is related to losses.

Abstract Motorcycle accidents are one of the most important road safety issues worldwide. There is a lack of specific researches about the characteristics of the scooter-motorcycle accidents, motivated by the absence not only of a precise definition and but also by a properly identification of the different type of two-wheeled vehicles within the accident´s database. The aim of this study is to determine the characteristics of the 293 scooter-motorcycle drivers deceased in Spain in the period 2006 to 2011. According to the nature of the variables involved were performed descriptive and association analysis. The results of the analysis enable the identification some of the main human factors associated with the fatal accidents of scooter-motorcycle drivers.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate associations between vocational interests, personality traits and work values. 281 students participated, with a mean age of 23.97, from business administration, psychology, philosophy and theology, of the state of São Paulo. Three instruments (Scale Work Values Assessment, Search Quiz Self-Addressed and Battery Personality Factor) were use. The results indicated that the social responsibility and management factors explained the interests Realistic, Social, Conventional and Artistic, with an explained variance between 2% and 18%. With respect to personality traits as predictors of working values, results showed values between 9% and 33%, with ‘Competence’ as the most present facet in the models. The results are discussed according to the literature.

Abstract Worldwide students from low socioeconomic status (SES) have been shown to present an academic disadvantage with respect to their mathematical abilities. In order to approach this problem, details of the characteristics in different school levels, students of different sex and different mathematical subskills are needed. To our knowledge, few studies have explored the interaction of these factors in the same sample of participants. Therefore, we aim to analyse the influence of SES and sex on the addition, subtraction and multiplication math facts (MF) skills of a sample of 619 primary school students from year 2 to 6. Besides confirming the socioeconomic disadvantage in all school years and in students of both sexes, our results reveal a higher performance of boys over girls only in medium to higher SES and in multiplication MF. Future research is needed to investigate this unexpected result.

Abstract This study characterized the psychopathological risk factor in suicide attempts assisted in the emergency service of a general hospital in Jujuy, Argentina. The study was of the epidemiological type, of transversal-descriptive design. The data sources were psychological assists records during 2007-2008 and 2011-2012. Of total suicide attempts (N = 481), 19.54% had attempted suicide previously, while 28.07% had diagnosis of mental disorder, of which 56.30% were receiving treatment at the time of suicide attempt. Mood disorders, especially depressives, and Substance-related disorders were the most frequent diagnoses. Significant differences according to demographic markers (sex-age) that should be considered in future studies were found. The results showed that the psychopathological suicide risk factor is much less prevalent in the local casuistry compared to reports in foreign populations. The findings question the importance of psychopathological risk factor in suicide attempts.

Abstract This research is part of an investigation of major proportions in which a systemic modelis applied mainly in panic disorders. The “equation resistance to change” (ERC) is the synergy between four factors: the degree of severity of symptoms or problems, the frequency of occurrence, the number of symptoms or problems that make satellites and finally, the time of onset. The goal is to predict the degree of resistance to change in patients from the first interview, as well as to explain the relapse effect and repetition compulsion and thus adapt the strategies and interventions more effectively. In this regard, the proposal is to apply the equation to human problems in general. The theoretical support of the equation willbedeveloped on the basis of four variables: cognitive, interactional, emotional and neurophysiological, and as an example of its application, it is displayed on 30 specific cases of anxiety disorders and panic attackswith or without agoraphobia and also in social phobias.
