  • Thoughts on analyses of intransitive intertemporal preference.
    • Authors: Scholten; Marc
Abstract: A contender in the descriptive analysis of intertemporal choice is the tradeoff model (Scholten & Read, 2010), which provides a parsimonious and psychologically plausible account of many preference patterns in intertemporal choice, among which occurrences of intransitivity. In past applications of the tradeoff model to intransitive choices, individuals made all choices in a collection only once, and choices were often aggregated across participants. Dai (2017) examined whether intertemporal preferences are transitive in a Bayesian analysis of repeated individual intertemporal choices. Weak, moderate, and strong stochastic intransitivity rarely occurred. In this reply, I first provide a brief sketch (and in no way an exhaustive exposition) of the breadth of evidence that the tradeoff model addresses, and how it does that. I then point out several things that must be kept in mind while appreciating Dai’s contribution: (a) the paucity of intransitive choices does not argue against the tradeoff model, or any attribute-based model of its generality; (b) the interpretation that Dai offers of relative nonadditivity, a complex preference pattern previously observed in aggregate choice, including intransitive choice, is ad hoc, and lacks the generality that the tradeoff model provides in accounting for a host of preference patterns, among which relative nonadditivity; (c) substantive psychological models that maximize scope and minimize lack of parsimony, and that survive in empirical contests between them, are ultimately the route toward good judgment about the psychology of intertemporal tradeoffs. • Using tests of transitivity to evaluate psychological models of
intertemporal choice for individuals: Reply to Scholten (2017).
    • Authors: Dai; Junyi
Abstract: Dai (2017) found that most individual data from an experiment in which participants were required to choose repeatedly between pairs of intertemporal options tailored to each individual were consistent with stochastic transitivity of intertemporal preferences. Scholten (2017) noted that this finding does not argue against the tradeoff model (Scholten & Read, 2010), which provides psychologically plausible accounts for various preference patterns in intertemporal choice. In addition, it is a prime example of substantive psychological models, which are the ultimate route to understanding the psychology of intertemporal choice. In general, I second Scholten’s reasoning. However, I stress that my finding also suggests alternative views on the transitivity of intertemporal preferences and distinct ways to conceive and evaluate psychological models of intertemporal choice, especially at an individual level. I also emphasize the necessity of distinguishing among different definitions of preference transitivity, and between choice and preference patterns, when examining transitivity of intertemporal preferences. Future research should focus on individual choices and use both qualitative and quantitative data to identify the best model for each individual. • Thurstonian cognitive models for aggregating top-n
           lists.
    • Authors: Selker; Ravi; Lee, Michael D.; Iyer, Ravi
Abstract: In a top-n task, people produce a list of items that they believe are ordered relative to a criterion, and can include any number of items in their list. We develop Thurstonian cognitive models of the individual differences and decision-making processes involved in producing top-n lists, and apply it to the problem of inferring an aggregated list from individual responses. We present 3 applications—involving predicting movie popularity, predicting the outcome of the 2014 World Cup tournament, and rating the worst U.S. presidents—using real-world data from the crowd-sourced opinion website ranker.com. The movie popularity application demonstrates the ability of the model to make relatively accurate predictions, partly through its ability to infer individual expertise. The World Cup application demonstrates the ability of the model to make accurate predictions, partly through its ability to incorporate relevant prior information, and partly through its ability to model multiple relevant behavioral data jointly. The U.S. presidents application demonstrates the ability of the model to allow for multiple latent rankings, so that a subgroup of contaminant opinions can be separated from those that reflect established historical opinion. On the basis of these applications, we argue that the psychological goals of developing models of how people produce top-n lists, and the applied goals of making accurate predictions, are usefully tackled simultaneously. • Structured representations of utility in combinatorial domains.
    • Authors: Gershman; Samuel J.; Malmaud, Jonathan; Tenenbaum, Joshua B.
Abstract: People can judge whether they will enjoy dishes like waffles with horseradish cream sauce or broccoli ice cream even if they have never tried them. What representations and computations support reasoning in such situations? We develop a theory of decision making in combinatorial domains. Its central claim is that utility functions can be compositionally structured: The utility of a combination is a function of its constituents’ utilities and the rules for combining them. Utilities are induced from experience by probabilistic reasoning over the structured space of utility functions. In a series of experiments, we show how this theory can capture human evaluations of novel food combinations. We first show that the theory quantitatively predicts evaluations of novel food combinations. We then report more strongly controlled experiments (using unfamiliar foods) that rule out several alternative theories. Taken together, these experiments demonstrate how compositionally structured representations of utility can support decision making in combinatorial domains. • Reasons for cooperating in repeated interactions: Social value
orientations, fuzzy traces, reciprocity, and activity bias.
    • Authors: Pulford; Briony D.; Colman, Andrew M.; Lawrence, Catherine L.; Krockow, Eva M.
Abstract: Many human interactions involve patterns of turn-taking cooperation that can be modeled by the deeply paradoxical Centipede game. A backward induction argument suggests that cooperation is irrational in such interactions, but experiments have demonstrated that players cooperate frequently and earn better payoffs as a consequence. We formulate 6 competing theories of cooperation in Centipede games and report the results of 2 experiments, based on investigations of several closely matched games with different payoff structures and different methods of reaching decisions. The results show that turn-taking cooperation does not appear to be explained by reciprocity theory, activity bias theory, or a motive to maximize relative payoffs, but that collective rationality, in the form of a motive to maximize joint payoffs, and fuzzy-trace theory can explain cooperation in interactions of this type. Reciprocity increases cooperation across repeated games between fixed player pairs, but there is no evidence of reciprocity influencing cooperation within games.
