  • Social Cognition and Executive Function Impairment in Young Women with
           Anorexia Nervosa

    • Abstract: ABSTRACT Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a very debilitating disorder and has shown different cognitive deficit patterns. Some of them are controversial because they relate some deficit with autistic traits. Both, social cognition and executive function are top-down processes that regulate social interaction and adaptive behavior in a complex world. Neurocognitive profiles focused on this process are especially useful as endophenotypes in clinic research and intervention. The aims of this study are (1) assessing the contribution of social cognition and executive function to socio-emotional and neurocognitive patterns in anorexia nervosa and (2) investigating the possible relationships between social cognition tasks and executive function measures and clinic features in this eating disorder. Fifteen adolescents with anorexia nervosa and 15 healthy controls took part in this study. Patients were diagnosed with DSM-IV-R criteria. They had suffered the disease for 3 years (SD ± 1.47). They were compared in social cognition (Reading the Mind in the Eyes and the IOWA Gambling Task) and executive function (verbal fluency tasks, trail making test, and digit span test [DST] from the WAIS-III). The results show that there was a significant difference in social cognition, at the theory of mind and the IOWA gambling task. Finally, for the executive function task, adolescents with AN displayed significant differences in both direct DST and inverse DST, as well as in semantic fluency and phonological fluency compared with controls. These domains show different highly-significant relationships that could explain neurocognitive profiles. In conclusion, many differences were found between adolescents with AN and healthy controls. AN patients displayed important deficits in theory of mind recognition, executive function, and decision making. These deficits could play a role in maintaining pathological patterns and also important endophenotypes in research and intervention might be considered.RESUMEN La anorexia nerviosa es un trastorno muy debilitante y ha mostrado diferentes patrones de déficit cognitivo.

  • A study on reading competence in adults with intellectual and

The aim of this study was to analyze the level of reading competence in adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disability (AIDD) in Madrid Region. They read clinical texts of different lexical and semantic complexity. Sixty-one adults with intellectual disability and 31 undergraduate university students took part in this study. The results showed that AIDD improve their performance in reading comprehension tasks when the necessary time and supports are available. Thus, if a greater amount of time is available, the performance of a significant part of the AIDD improves considerably, in some cases getting close to the performance of university students. The education level of AIDD was decisive in their performance in the different tests.

  • Alterations in eating behavior in patients with substance abuse disorders

The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of eating disorders amongst patients seeking treatment for SUD, mainly alcohol, cocaine, and cannabis, and the modulating role of impulsivity and the presence of the eating restriction disorder. We employed the following evaluation instruments: the Barratt impulsivity scale, the eating disorder inventory (EDI), and the Valencia Addiction to Eating Restriction Questionnaire (CVAR). The results showed that patients with a SUD had higher levels of impulsivity and higher restriction scores. In terms of eating disorders, patients with SUD had a higher prevalence than the control group, with women presenting significantly higher scores than men. These results confirm that eating disorders have a very high prevalence in the population with addictions; especially, women present eating disorders that are more serious and higher impulsivity rates.

  • Development of emotional stability in dual pathology: a proposal for brief
           intervention

The objective of the study was to achieve an emotional balance by learning the management and regulation of emotions in patients with dual pathology. The methodology was mixed (qualitative-quantitative). The total sample consisted of 27 voluntary participants divided into two groups: treatment (n = 21) and control (n = 6). Qualitative data were obtained through the Interview by Objectives, the Test of the Eyes and a final ad hoc survey. Regarding qualitative results, the treatment group improved in emotional regulation, achieving abstinence and therapeutic discharge. In quantitative terms, emotional deregulation (DERS) was evaluated at transversal and longitudinal levels. The results, when comparing the groups in the post-test, showed significant differences in favor of the treatment group in the dimension of inattention. At the longitudinal level, a difference was detected in the treatment group in the post-test with respect to the pre-test in the dimensions of inattention and uncontrol, and no difference was found in the control group. The conclusion of the study indicates the improvement of comprehension of emotions together with an adequate coping of negative experiences on the part of participants in the treatment group.

  • The assessment of suggestibility in emotional disorders. An exploratory
           study

Estos resultados tienen importantes implicaciones para la práctica clínica.ABSTRACT The assessment of suggestibility and hipnotizability has become a valuable research line in the last decades. However, most studies have focused on general population, and there are limited and insufficient papers dealing with clinical simples. The aim of the present study was to evaluate general suggestibility in a sample of patients (n = 147) compared to a control (non-clinical) group (n = 57), by means of the adminitration of an inventory of suggestibility. Clinical sample participants showed higher levels of suggestibility (overall score) and higher levels of absorption, emotional suggestibility, and influence of others (subscales) than controls. By clinical groups, social anxiety, panic isorder, OCD, and PTSD groups scored higher in suggestibility than controls. These results have relevant implications for clinical practice.

  • Postpartum Depression Screening Scale Short Form: is it possible to use it
           for antenatal depression'

La PDSS-SF es una herramienta precisa para evaluar la depresión prenatal.ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to obtain the construct validity of the short form of the Postpartum Depression Scale (PDSS-SF) for screening antenatal depression symptoms by means of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) as a gold standard. The sample consisted of 449 pregnant women recruited in the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, Madrid, Spain. A ROC analysis was used. The results show the the area under the ROC curve for minor, moderate, and severe depression was .86, p < .001, .95, p < .001, and .99, p < .001, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity were .70 and .81 for minor depression, with 11 as a cutoff score, .85 and .88 for moderate depression, with 14 as a cutoff score, and 1 and .99, with 23 as a cutoff score for severe depression. The results of the PDSS-SF provide a good internal consistency, significant validity and reliability, and showed satisfactory combinations of sensitivity and specificity. The PDSS-SF is an accurate tool to evaluate antenatal depression.

  • Psychometric properties of the Behavior Activation for Depression Scale
           (BADS) in a Mexican sample

The aim of this work was to assess the psychometric properties of the Behavioral Activation for Depression Scale (BADS) in a sample of Mexican university students. To this end, the scale was applied to 381 students of a private university. The results showed that, compared to both the original version in English and the Spanish adaptation developed in Spain, it is a valid and consistent scale. The dimensions of the original instrument were replicated in the confirmatory factor analysis. Criterion and discriminant validity was contrasted by means of correlations with the BDI-II, which yielded scores according to what was expected both for the total scale and for the different dimensions. An ordinal logistic regression analysis showed that BDI-II cut-off scores (minimal, mild, moderate, and severe depression) adequately predict BADS scores. Regarding the internal consistency, this sample reached a Cronbach’s alpha of .89 for the total scale and from .77 to .85 for its dimensions.
