  • Exchange-based communication training may not consistently facilitate
           communication in the absence of the requested item

      Abstract: The role of stimulus presence on spontaneous communication was assessed with 3 participants in a nonconcurrent multiple baseline with embedded reversals design. Participants were taught to request 2 highly preferred items. Once mastery criterion was met, test sessions were conducted with stimuli either visible or absent from the room, and request rate was measured. For 2 participants, training produced requests in both the presence and absence of the stimulus. For one participant, however, the presence of the stimulus was necessary to evoke the response. Results suggest that teaching individuals to request items when they are present may not consistently lead to requests when those items are absent.

  • Effects of computer-aided instruction on the implementation of the MSWO
           stimulus preference assessment

      Abstract: This study evaluated a self-instructional online training package to teach students and staff to conduct a stimulus preference assessment using the multiple-stimulus without replacement procedure. The training package included a self-instructional manual and video modeling and was delivered online. Training was evaluated using a multiple-probe design across a total of six university students and four staff members. Overall, students improved from a mean of 35% correct in baseline to a mean of 94% correct following training, and staff improved from a mean of 23% correct in baseline to a mean of 87% correct following training. During retention and generalization simulated assessments conducted from 7 to 17 days following training, all participants performed considerably above baseline. The online delivery of the self-instructional manual plus video modeling has tremendous potential for providing an effective method for teaching individuals to conduct stimulus preference assessments without face-to-face instruction.

  • Teaching college students to pour accurately using behavioral skills
           training: Evaluation of the effects of peer modeling

      Abstract: Excessive alcohol consumption among college students is a serious problem. Alcohol education courses, during which students are taught to free-pour accurate servings of alcohol, have been proposed as one strategy to reduce this problem. However, few studies have evaluated the effects of peer models on free-pour skill maintenance. We used a nonconcurrent multiple-baseline across subjects design to assess the effects of peer modeling on maintenance of college students' (N = 19) pouring skills of a standard serving of beer immediately following Behavioral Skills Training (BST). Results indicated participants who inaccurately poured a standard serving of beer at baseline (n = 17) accurately poured following receipt of BST, and all participants (N = 19) maintained accurate pouring in the presence of peer confederate models who poured inaccurately or accurately. Results suggest BST is an efficient (i.e., low to no-cost, requires no sophisticated laboratory space or software, and makes use of available and affordable materials) and effective tool for teaching college students to pour standard servings of beer and that the immediate introduction of inaccurately pouring peer models has little or no effect on skill maintenance.

  • Application of multiple baseline designs in behavior analytic research:
           Evidence for the influence of new guidelines

      Abstract: The multiple baseline (MBL) design is a single-case experimental design that has both research and applied utility. Although the concurrent and nonconcurrent MBL variants are valid designs, each rules out different threats to internal validity. To help clarify these differences, studies have provided guidelines for graphically depicting and distinguishing between concurrent and nonconcurrent MBLs. This study assessed the extent to which data-presentation guidelines have been adopted by examining single-case experimental design studies published in 3 behavior-analytic journals from 2000 to 2015. Results suggest that data-depiction guidelines have increased correct identification of concurrent multiple baseline designs but also indicate that these guidelines have not been universally adopted.

  • A comparison of two multicomponent treatment packages for food refusal

      Abstract: Food refusal is a severe feeding problem in which children refuse to eat all or most foods, which can be treated effectively using multicomponent intervention packages. This study compared two multicomponent treatment packages on food and drink consumption, inappropriate mealtime behavior, and total intake in a child with food refusal. Bite and drink consumption was consistently higher; inappropriate mealtime behavior was consistently lower; and total intake was greater when differential reinforcement of alternative behavior and escape extinction treatment were implemented compared to response cost, escape extinction, and differential reinforcement of alternative behavior.

  • Using backward chaining and a physical guidance delay to teach
           self-feeding

      Abstract: Many children with feeding disorders lack age-appropriate self-feeding without intervention, irrespective of whether refusal is a motivational or skill deficit. When a target behavior is infrequent or absent, multistep tasks can be shaped using chaining by targeting a preexisting step within an individual's behavioral repertoire. Studies suggest when the preexisting response is in the final step of the chain, backward chaining may increase mastery. In this study, we investigated the use of backward chaining to increase self-feeding of solids of a 4-year-old male.

  • The effects of a behavioral skills training and general-case training
           package on caregiver implementation of a food selectivity intervention

      Abstract: We used behavioral skills training with general-case training to teach 3 caregivers to implement a behavioral feeding intervention with their children. The percentage of correctly performed steps of the feeding intervention increased for all 3 caregivers and was maintained at follow-up. For all 3 children, the number of bites consumed increased and the number of bites with inappropriate mealtime behavior decreased across treatment. Increases in bites consumed and bites without behavior problems were maintained for 2 participants at follow-up.

  • The ACHIEVE! program: A point and level system for reducing severe problem
           behavior

      Abstract: Token economies are routinely used in residential programs for individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (IDD), but research demonstrating the effectiveness of token economies has declined in recent years. Advocates of token economies argue that they provide children and young people with IDD a predictable structure that is effective in increasing prosocial behavior and reducing problem behavior. Critics have argued that they are too restrictive and not flexible enough to meet the needs of all individuals. We present a program description and correlational study of a variation of a token economy. It illustrates how a school-wide points and level system that emphasizes and reinforces demonstration of important prosocial skills, without the use of punishment, can be inversely correlated with occurrences of severe problem behavior (i.e., aggression, harmful sexual behavior, and property damage) in students with IDD attending a residential program. Directions for future research on token economies is discussed.

  • Using computer-assisted instruction to increase the eye gaze of children
           with autism

      Abstract: Many children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders have difficulty making appropriate eye contact and engaging in joint attention. The current study evaluated a computer-assisted instruction package (pairing visual stimuli with vocal stimuli) as a novel treatment to improve the eye gaze accuracy in 3 elementary school children with autism. The researchers measured the latency from a recorded verbal stimulus to the students making eye contact with pictures of familiar individuals displayed on a computer screen, and the duration for which eye gaze on the stimulus was maintained. An automated infrared camera system for measuring eye gaze was utilized that eliminated the need for an instructor to make subjective judgments regarding participants' eye gaze. For all three participants, duration of eye contact increased, and latency to responding decreased following exposure to the computer-assisted instruction. The implications of these findings for the treatment of individuals with autism are discussed, along with suggestions for future research on the topic.

  • Improvements in problem behavior in a child with autism spectrum diagnosis
           through synthesized analysis and treatment: A replication in an EIBI home
           program

      Abstract: A recent study described a synthesized treatment where a functional analysis was based on an open-ended interview and combined with functional communication and delay-tolerance training. The treatment resulted in a reduction in problem behaviors and an increase in appropriate requests. Most of the analysis and intervention were done in a clinic setting, and required weekly visits by the family. This present study is a systematic replication, where we conducted the same synthesized treatments, with a young child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) enrolled in a home-based Early Intensive Behavior Intervention program, EIBI. Outcomes were similar with a marked reduction in problem behaviors and an increase in appropriate requests. These findings suggest that it is possible to conduct this intervention in a home setting, with weekly consultations with parents. Our study show the utility of the synthesized treatment in an EIBI program in a home setting and how this can contribute to client time and costs.

  • Direct assessment of quality of care in secure residential treatment

      Abstract: Direct assessment was used to evaluate quality of care in 2 secure residential treatment facilities for criminal offenders with intellectual disabilities. This population and type of setting have not been previously studied in this context. Observations were conducted of environmental condition, resident condition, resident activity, and staff member activity at various times of day over a period of 3 weeks in Facility 1 and 2 days in Facility 2. An additional analysis was conducted to determine the optimal number of observations needed to obtain a representative sample. Results indicated high levels of quality in terms of environmental condition and resident condition in both facilities. Data on resident and staff activities were more variable but generally consistent with previous research. Implications for the optimal number of observations are discussed, as well as limitations and future directions for research.

  • Using intraverbal prompts to increase divergent intraverbal responses by a
           child with autism

      Abstract: We examined the effectiveness of intraverbal prompts to increase the number of divergent responses to categorical questions composed of compound stimuli (e.g., Name some red things) for a 6-year-old child with autism. The intraverbal prompts involved providing the function, feature, and class of the target responses. A multiple probe across behaviors design was used. Results indicated that the child's total number of divergent responses was increased and maintained during 2-week follow-up probe trials. Novel responses were observed across conditions.

  • An evaluation of auditory feedback for students of dance: Effects of
           giving and receiving feedback

      Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate auditory feedback for dance students on a competition team in which one peer provided auditory feedback to another peer for a selected dance movement. Some peers switched roles during the study, and increases in their performances were evaluated both as the receiver and deliverer of auditory feedback. All participants demonstrated increases in their respective target behaviors when they received auditory feedback. Several participants also displayed increases in their movements when they provided auditory feedback to their peer partner, although these increases were not as substantial as those who received feedback.

  • Promoting verbal reports and action plans by staff during monthly meetings
           in a Japanese residential home

      Abstract: We examined factors leading to the successful implementation of behavioral programs by staff caring for children in a Japanese residential home. We used a multiple baseline design across 3 units of residential homes to assess the effects of 2 interventions. The primary dependent measures were staff verbal reports (e.g., descriptions of antecedents, behavior, and/or consequences) and action plans (instructions for intervention). Our results indicated that the use of quantitative data (e.g., frequency of behaviors) increased the percentage of time spent engaged in verbal reports, whereas the use of qualitative data (e.g., A-B-C recording) increased the percentage of action plans. In conclusion, our intervention promoted effective verbal reports and action plans. Using these tools, staff in residential housing facilities may be able to improve support delivered to children in Japanese residential programs. Future research may help to verify whether similar effects can be achieved in other settings.

  • Meta-analysis of behavioral self-management techniques used by students
           with disabilities in inclusive settings

      Abstract: This comprehensive review synthesizes findings from 29 studies in which students with disabilities utilized behavioral self-management techniques in inclusive settings. Findings suggest that consistent with 2 earlier reviews of these types of studies, most behavioral self-management techniques continue to be adaptable in inclusive settings with moderate to strong efficacy. This review identifies strengths as well common limitations of the studies, provides recommendations for future research and practice, and includes behavioral self-management resources.

  • Comparison of behavioral intervention and sensory integration therapy on
           challenging behavior of children with autism

      Abstract: The current study used an AB crossover design to directly compare the effects of sensory integration therapy (SIT) and behavioral intervention (BI) on the challenging behavior of 10 participants with autism spectrum disorder. During the intervention phase, all participants received both treatments. Follow-up probes were conducted 1 month following intervention for 4 participants implementing the more effective intervention. The results showed that BI successfully reduced challenging behavior to low- or near-zero levels. In contrast, SIT resulted in higher and more variable rates of challenging behavior. One exception was noted for Participant 4 who engaged in a decreased level of challenging behavior during SIT. The findings are discussed in relation to implication for practice and future research.

  • Serial functional communication training: Extending serial DRA to mands
           and problem behavior

      Abstract: Functional communication training (FCT) is commonly used to eliminate problem behavior. Not surprisingly, the efficacy of the intervention depends on fidelity to programmed procedures. For instance, problem behavior is likely to resurge if caregivers fail to reinforce mands during the maintenance stages of FCT. Despite this, recent translational work on arbitrary human responses suggests that incorporating multiple-mand instruction into a serial-training format may increase the probability of a recency effect, and a reversion of response resurgence (both desirable outcomes when mands are the most recently reinforced responses prior to extinction). Although promising, this effect has not been replicated with socially significant human behavior. Thus, we compared the relative effect of traditional FCT with that of serial FCT on the resurgence of the problem behavior, and mands, of 2 children. In contrast to previous research, we observed primacy effects for both subjects (i.e., the magnitude of the resurgence of problem behavior was greater than it was for any subsequently trained mand), and mand resurgence never occurred for one subject. Notwithstanding these limitations, the percentage of total responding allocated toward the resurgence of problem behavior was less in the serial FCT component relative to the traditional FCT component, and we observed a reversion of response resurgence for one subject.

  • Embedding a functional analysis of compliance in small group instruction

      Abstract: Research on adaptations to standard functional analyses for use in classroom settings has increased in recent years. However, few studies have focused on procedural variations specific to assessing noncompliance in the context of academic instruction. In the current study, we trained a special education teacher to embed a functional analysis of compliance in small group instruction. The goal of the functional analysis was to identify an effective reinforcement contingency for compliance for a second grade student with an intellectual disability. Results suggested a combined escape + tangible contingency increased compliance to instructional prompts relative to other conditions. The functional analysis of compliance represents a variation on previous functional analyses of noncompliance with potential to increase ecological and social validity of assessment procedures for classroom settings.

  • Effects of therapy balls on children diagnosed with attention deficit
           hyperactivity disorder

      Abstract: Therapy balls are air-filled rubber balls ranging from 20 to 30 in. in diameter that are sometimes used in place of traditional 4-legged chairs in classrooms. Unfortunately, research on the effects of therapy balls as chairs is limited. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of therapy balls on the on-task behavior and academic performance of elementary students diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. An alternating treatments design was implemented with 4 students from the 3rd and 4th grades comparing therapy ball seating to traditional classroom chairs. No effect of the therapy balls was found, although students preferred sitting on the therapy balls. Teachers reported that the therapy balls were difficult to use and did not find them particularly effective.

  • Function-based replacement behavior interventions for students with
           challenging behavior

      Abstract: Using a concurrent multiple probe design, this study investigated the effects of function-based replacement behavior interventions on the challenging behaviors of three students with or at risk of emotional and behavioral disorders who attended a rural elementary school. For all three students, interventions were effective at decreasing the occurrence of challenging and off-task behavior. Effects were maintained for two participants. Maintenance and generalization effects in a replication setting in which replacement behaviors were loosely trained were also documented for two participants. Furthermore, teachers rated the interventions favorably. Implications for practice, study limitations, and areas for future research are discussed.

  • Identity matching to sample and exclusion performance in elderly with and
           without neurocognitive disorders

      Abstract: Neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) affect complex processes of stimulus control, such as relational performance. The aims of this study were (a) to compare the performance of older adults with NCD with that of control older adults in generalized identity matching (GI) tests and in responding by exclusion probes and (b) to verify the effect of identity matching training on subsequent GI and exclusion tests, in older adults with NCD. Participants were 24 older adults (aged 60 to 92 years), eight without NCD (control group I [CG I]), and 16 with NCD: CG II, with accurate performance in the GI tests and the experimental group (EG), with low performance in these tests. After exclusion and GI tests with all participants, the EG underwent identity matching training with 3 pairs of visual stimuli, and exclusion and identity matching posttests. All participants of the CG I and CG II presented accurate performance in the tests. Seven of the 8 older adults of the EG achieved the learning criterion in the training and showed some improvement in the GI posttest; however, positive effects of the training were not observed in the exclusion posttests. Teaching procedures for identity matching in older adult patients with NCD can produce positive results; however, it is necessary to understand the relationship between cognitive decline and other relational performances.

  • The differential outcomes effect in children with autism

      Abstract: The differential outcomes procedure uses reinforcement unique to each alternative in a conditional discrimination, leading to faster and more accurate learning relative to non-differential outcomes procedures. In this study, the differential outcomes procedure was used to teach novel tacts of musical instrument sounds to children with autism. For one set of instruments, response-specific reinforcers were used in combination with social reinforcement. For the other set, reinforcers were provided non-differentially. Two out of three participants showed enhanced learning in the differential outcomes condition, providing some support of the differential outcomes procedures as a useful tool for teaching individuals with autism. Future research into the differential outcomes effect is warranted to identify the procedural and individual factors that predict its effectiveness.

  • Operant discrimination training to establish praise as a reinforcer

      Abstract: Social deficits are a hallmark feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Consequently, socially mediated consequences (i.e., praise) may not function as reinforcers for individuals with ASD. Given the frequency in which praise is used as a programmed consequence in empirical research and in clinical practice, it is necessary to explore procedures that could condition praise to function as reinforcers. Operant discrimination training has emerged as a potential procedure to condition stimuli to acquire reinforcing properties. This study aimed to utilize the operant discrimination training procedure to condition a praise statement to function as a reinforcer. Four children diagnosed with ASD participated in the study. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline design across participants was used to evaluate this emerging pairing procedure. Findings suggest that immediate effects were observed across all participants, but responding did not maintain, suggesting that reinforcing value of the praise statement diminished.
