  • The effects of an escape extinction procedure using protective equipment
           on self-injurious behavior

      Abstract: While escape extinction has shown to be successful in reducing escape maintained self-injurious behavior, there is limited research on the use of escape extinction with protective equipment for escape maintained self-injurious behavior. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of an escape extinction procedure paired with the application of protective equipment on the escape maintained self-injurious behavior of an 8-year-old boy diagnosed with autism. Results suggested that escape extinction using protective equipment for safety is an effective approach to decrease head hitting. Rates of self-injurious behavior during an 18-month follow-up were comparable to rates observed in the final intervention phase.

  • Effects of response independent delivery of preferred items and the
           high-probability instructional sequence on compliance

      Abstract: The use of the high-probability (high-p) instructional sequence to increase compliance, which includes issuing a series of instructions with which a participant is likely to comply immediately before issuing a low-probability instruction, has received mixed support in the literature. Previous research has suggested that the delivery of response independent reinforcement may be as effective to increase compliance, at least for some types of instructions. In this study, we examined the effects of response independent reinforcement and the high-p sequence on compliance with two types of instructions with two young children. Results show that neither procedure was effective for increasing compliance for either type of instruction; however, contingent access to a high preference item increased compliance. Results are discussed in terms of the conditions under which response independent delivery of high-preference items and the high-p instructional sequence might be effective to increase compliance.

  • Developing and demonstrating inhibitory stimulus control over repetitive
           behavior

      Abstract: Developing inhibitory stimulus control over repetitive behavior minimizes the social and learning disruptions caused by this behavior while allowing individuals to continue to access this source of reinforcement at nonproblematic times. These procedures involve allowing repetitive behaviors to occur in some stimulus conditions (S+) and blocking the repetitive behavior in order to disrupt the response–reinforcer relation in other stimulus conditions (S-) such that the onset of the S- period results in rapid and sustained reductions in repetitive behavior. However, the demonstration of stimulus control exerted by the S- has often been confounded with participants' exposure to programmed reductive contingencies (i.e., behavior is reduced due to direct contact with contingencies rather than the programmed antecedent stimuli). The current study both developed and demonstrated the suppressive effects of S- presentation upon repetitive behavior with two children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. These demonstration techniques involved (a) introducing the S- into novel environments without the programmed contingencies that we used to establish discriminative control, (b) evaluating the reductive effects of programmed contingencies with and without the associated discriminative stimuli, and (c) evaluating latencies to the onset of repetitive behavior given S+ and S- presentations.

  • An investigation of the matrix training approach to teach social play
           skills

      Abstract: Matrix training is a conceptual model inspired by the generative learning approach to program development. This investigation used matrix training to facilitate a generative repertoire of two-component solitary and social play skills in a child diagnosed with autism and cerebral palsy. Play-related actions and corresponding toys were aligned on perpendicular axes of a standard matrix. The learner was trained on the skills that intersected along the diagonal of the matrix. The learner acquired both appropriate solitary and social play skills. The participant also began requesting items from a peer despite not having been directly trained to do so. The untrained combinations accounted for 86% of the matrix responses acquired.

  • A comparison of computer-assisted and therapist-led instruction for
           children with autism spectrum disorder

      Abstract: The current investigation applied a model of assessment-based instruction to an evaluation of the efficacy and efficiency of computer-assisted and therapist-led instruction on skill acquisition for 3 participants with autism spectrum disorder. We also evaluated the participant's attending during instruction and the social validity of each format of instruction. The results showed that computer-assisted instruction was most efficient for 2 of the 3 participants, although attending varied across instructional formats. In addition, the social validity of instructional formats varied across participants.

  • Examination of variables that affect the efficacy of instructive feedback

      Abstract: Instructive feedback is a procedure in which additional, nontarget stimuli are presented during instructional trials for students with a wide array of disabilities. This preliminary investigation examined whether participant behavior during instructive feedback, including attending and echoic behavior, altered the efficacy of instructive feedback for 2 children with autism. Results showed that participant behavior during instructive feedback related to training outcomes for both participants and treatment modifications based on participant behavior influenced acquisition. Future directions of research and implications for practice are discussed.

  • An evaluation of a caregiver training protocol on the generalization and
           maintenance of successful pediatric feeding interventions

      Abstract: Previous researchers have documented the positive effects achieved by trained clinicians providing behavioral interventions for pediatric feeding disorders; however, few have evaluated the maintenance of those treatments when subsequently implemented by primary caregivers. Further, the majority of previous caregiver training research has relied on the use of multicomponent training packages making it difficult to determine which components are necessary for success. The purpose of the current investigation was to evaluate the effects of instructions and feedback on caregivers' implementation of feeding protocols in a home setting. Results of the current study suggest that feedback may be the most effective training component in training packages designed to teach caregivers to implement an effective feeding protocol. Potential concomitant changes in child behavior are also discussed.

  • Auditory script location does not affect acquisition and maintenance of
           vocal initiations by children with autism

      Abstract: The present study evaluated whether two different locations of auditory scripts, relative to target discriminative stimuli, affected acquisition and maintenance of initiations of vocal interactions by four boys with autism or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified. An alternating-treatments design with an initial baseline was used. Button-activated recording devices used to play the scripts were placed either on target stimuli or held behind the participants' heads to initiate interactions about a variety of toys. After scripts and the devices were faded, the frequency of initiations emitted was greater for two participants during the device-visible condition, greater for another participant during the device-not-visible condition, and no difference as a function of auditory script location for the fourth participant. These results suggest that fading an auditory script played behind a child's head may be equally as effective for establishing stimulus control by target items as fading an auditory script initially attached to items.

  • Teaching children with autism to follow gaze shift: A brief report on
           three cases

      Abstract: This study evaluated the extent to which prompting and reinforcement increased three participants' correct selections of items following a therapist's gaze shift using a non-concurrent multiple baseline design for two participants and an ABCD design for one participant. Results show that each participant learned to discriminate an adult's gaze direction to make a correct selection and each participant's responding generalized to selections with non-reinforcing stimuli. Two participants also displayed the skill during probe sessions with their parents; however, the third participant required tangible reinforcement for correct selections to demonstrate the skill with a parent.

  • Teaching young children to make accurate portion size estimations using a
           stimulus equivalence paradigm

      Abstract: The prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents has increased over the past four decades. Obesity can be conceptualized as a problem related to energy balance, where more energy is consumed than is expended through physical activity. One way that children may have a positive energy balance is through the overconsumption of foods (i.e., eating large portion sizes). Therefore, interventions that teach children to make accurate portion size estimations may be important to maintain overall health. In the current study, seven children between the ages of 4 and 7 years were taught to make accurate portion size estimations using a stimulus equivalence paradigm. Results suggested that the stimulus equivalence paradigm was effective in teaching five of seven participants to make more accurate portion size estimations during posttraining. Furthermore, five of seven participants estimated the target portion size of a novel food during extension sessions. These findings extend the current literature related to teaching children to make accurate portion size estimations. Although this was a translational study, results might help to inform existing nutrition education programs aimed at teaching children healthier eating habits.

      Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to use a delayed multiple probe design to evaluate the effects of a multicomponent intervention on reading fluency in three adult Norwegian university students. Prior to the study, all the participants had below average reading speed and one had the diagnosis dyslexia. The present procedure consisted of reading support, fluency aim, repeated reading, performance feedback, and error correction. Training involved daily sessions where a passage was read four times in a session or until a predetermined fluency aim was reached. Each participant read 10 passages during the intervention. Maintenance, generalization, and reading comprehension were tested to evaluate characteristics of fluent performance. The main findings indicate that reading fluency of all the participants improved. Results are discussed with regard to (i) conducting a multicomponent intervention; (ii) maintenance of the achieved improvements; (iii) possible effects on reading comprehension; and (iv) social validity of the study.   • Effects of Lag Schedules and Response Blocking on Variant Food Consumption
           by a Girl with Autism

      Abstract: Food selectivity by individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often viewed in the behavioral literature as a problem with compliance and treated accordingly. However, when viewed as a problem with invariance, it may be appropriate to treat the problem by using procedures that increase variant food consumption. Lag schedules of reinforcement have been shown to increase variability in verbal and play behavior of children with ASD. Therefore, we attempted to evaluate the effects of a lag schedule of positive reinforcement on variant food consumption by a girl with ASD and food selectivity. Ultimately, a lack of baseline variability in consumption precluded an evaluation of the programmed lag schedule but suggested that a discovery research approach may be informative. Thus, additional treatment components were added and evaluated in a component analysis. Response blocking of invariant consumption appeared to establish a lag schedule of reinforcement that increased variability and variety in food consumption, which was maintained across changes in the value of the lag schedule. Some potential behavioral processes responsible for the effects and implications for future research are discussed. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • Brief Behavioral Knowledge Questionnaire: Measuring Change in Caregiver's
           Knowledge Following Participation in a Brief Behavioral Training

      Abstract: Behavioral caregiver training programs are extensively used interventions, based on empirical research and applied concepts of behavior. As these interventions become more widespread in use across settings for various populations, the availability of efficient methods to evaluate program effectiveness is crucial. Currently, there is a lack of widely used and psychometrically sound measurement tools to assess change in caregivers' knowledge of behavioral principles following participation in such training. In the current study, we assessed change in caregivers' knowledge of behavioral principles following participation in a caregiver training based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Twenty caregivers participated in the evaluation, which included pre- and post-Brief Behavioral Knowledge Questionnaire (BBKQ) completed before and after participation in a brief behavioral training (BBT). The measurement was found to have good internal consistency. Results also show that following participation in the BBT, caregivers' initial knowledge of behavioral principles increased significantly. The results suggest that the BBKQ may be a useful tool in detecting changes in caregiver's knowledge of behavior principles following BBT. Limitation and future directions are discussed.   • Assessing the Within-Trial Treatment Integrity of Discrete-Trial Teaching
           Programs Using Sequential Analysis

      Abstract: Discrete-trial teaching is a strategy frequently used to teach functional skills to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Research has shown that the within-trial components of the procedure should be administered with ≥90% treatment integrity to facilitate optimal learning. Usually within-trial treatment integrity is measured using whole-session methods such as percentage of trials correctly administered. This study demonstrated one-step Markov transition matrices as a method of assessing within-trial treatment integrity. All components of discrete trials were coded and time-stamped from video recordings of therapist–learner dyads in their typical setting (home or school). Several types of within-trial treatment integrity errors were identified using the Markov transition matrices, error sequences that could not be identified using a percentage correct analysis. Better identification of errors has the potential both to enhance treatment integrity and to gain efficiency by targeted retraining of therapists. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • The Functional Independence of Skinner's Verbal Operants: Conceptual and
           Applied Implications

      Abstract: Much has been said about B. F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior. This commentary specifically focuses on the functional independence of B. F. Skinner's verbal operants. While researchers have long been interested in this topic, the research literature on this topic has produced mixed results; it has shown that the verbal operants may be both functionally independent and functionally interdependent. This commentary considers the conceptual and applied implications of these mixed findings. The distinction between constructs and events is highlighted, with specific attention to how this distinction relates to the consideration of the verbal operants in behavior analysis. The value of further research on the functional independence of the verbal operants is considered, as well as the type of research studies that might be useful toward developing interventions for individuals with language delays.   • Examination of a Multi-Element Intervention on College Students'
           Electricity Consumption in On-Campus Housing

      Abstract: Use of electricity is a significant contributor to climate change. Results from several studies have demonstrated short-term success but long-term success is rarely assessed, and weather is rarely measured despite its effects on energy use. We evaluated the long-term effects of a multi-element intervention package including visual prompts, feedback, and incentives on energy usage in two sorority houses over two years (four semesters) using a multiple baseline with reversal design while also accounting for weather fluctuations over that time period. Although daily graphs suggested intervention houses reduced their relative energy use compared to baseline, functional control over behavior was not established because reductions in energy consumption were observed approximately halfway through baseline, due possibly to reactivity; control houses showed no such pattern. Moreover, bubble graphs accounting for weather suggested an increase in energy use for the intervention house during Semester 1. We discuss the limitations of this study, suggestions for future research, and use of innovative methods of graphing energy use to better understand usage patterns and account for weather fluctuations.   • Using Prediction and Desensitization Techniques to Treat Dental Anxiety: A
           Case Example

      Abstract: Although professional dental care prevents many medical issues such as periodontal disease and tooth decay, dental anxiety among individuals with significant disabilities frequently prevents receipt of adequate dental care. Furthermore, although research documents the positive effects of interventions designed to decrease dental anxiety, there is a paucity of research on their effectiveness with this group. This case study examined the efficacy of a two-component dental treatment package on improving a young boy's patient behavior during routine dental examinations. Results indicate overall improvements in participant behavior and maintenance of appropriate behavior three years after the study. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
