  • Oxidative Stress and Preeclampsia

KhannaEclampsia is one of the most common pregnancy complications causing high mortality and morbidity for both mother and foetus. Low birth weight and pre-maturity are very common features. Pre-eclampsia is associated with oxidative stress in the maternal circulation. The etiology and pathogenesis of the pregnancy syndrome preeclampsia remain poorly understood. There is substantial evidence to suggest that the diverse manifestations of preeclampsia, including altered vascular reactivity, vasospasm, and discrete pathology in many organ systems, are derived from pathologic changes within the maternal vascular endothelium. The imbalance between oxidative damage and antioxidant defences in pre-eclampsia leads to endothelial cell dysfunction. Endothelial cell dysfunction appears to be a central feature in the patho-physiology of pre-eclampsia.

  • OlfactionDB: A Database of Olfactory Receptors and Their Ligands

GiorgettiOdorants are volatile molecules that efficiently carry chemical information, providing one of the main ways for communicating with the environment in all kingdoms of life. In the other hand, mammalian genomes codify for hundreds of olfactory receptors (ORs), e.g. about 400 in human and more than 1000 in mouse, underlying the crucial role of the sense of smell during evolution. Therefore, the olfactory system is capable to discriminate between ~10,000 different odors. The possibility of collecting and compiling information about odorants and their receptors is thus fundamental for a functional characterization of the signaling firing event. OlfactionDB, a manually curated database providing comprehensive information for nearly 400 odorant-receptor interactions at the current state, has been developed for managing information about odorants and their receptors.   • Molecular Detection of Theileria Annulata in Egyptian Buffaloes and
           Biochemical Changes Associated with Particular Oxidative Changes

RadwanThis investigation is performed on 100 buffaloes native Breed in Kaliobia governorate Egypt aged from 1-3years, these animals suffered from fever (41°C) enlargement lymph node, inappetence, pale mucous membrane, increase lacrimation, emaciation and corneal opacity in progressive stages when these animals were subjected to microscopic examination the degree of parasitaema was recorded as the percentage of infected red blood cells in 1000red blood cell counted .We report the detection of Theileria annulata by PCR in blood samples obtained from buffaloes supposed to be infected. The assay employs primers specific for the gene encoding Theileria annulata 185RNA biochemical changes associated with Theileria annulata in these buffaloes particular emphasis to the oxidative stress the reduce TAC level may reflect adecrease in antioxidant capacity . Blood collected from all animals on EDTA to microscopic examination and PCR to determine type of Theileria.

  • Tale of Fish Sperm and Factors Affecting Sperm Motility: A Review

AkhterMotility is an important function of the male gamete, which allows sperm to actively reach and penetrate the female gamete in organisms with internal and external fertilization. Sexual activity of some fish is generally seasonal and fertilization is external. Sperm, once differentiated in the gonad, remain there completely quiescent until they are released into the external medium, which is either freshwater or sea water. Various parameters such as ion concentrations (K+, Na+, Ca2+), osmotic pressure, pH, and temperature affect motility. In the present paper, we review the roles of these factors on sperm motility in the teleosts. Studying the effects of these factors on teleost sperm can help establish good activation and/or immobilizing media for improving either artificial fertilization or cryopreservation.

  • Binary Combination of Different Breeds of Freeze-Dried Cow Urine (FCU)
           with Some Plant Molluscicides against Lymnaea acuminata: Vector of

Singh,Vinay Kumar SinghMolluscicidal activity of binary combination of different breeds of freeze-dried cow urine (FCU) such as Sahiwal, Geer and Tharparkar with plant molluscicides viz Annona squamosa seed powder, Azadirachta indica oil, Ferula asafoetida root latex and Camellia sinensis against harmful snail Lymnaea acuminata have been studied. It was observed that the toxicity of binary combination (1:1) of plant molluscicides and different breeds of freeze-dried cow urine (FCU) kept for 15 days in sunlight (8h/day) and laboratory condition were toxic against L. acuminata. Among all combinations, the toxicity of Sahiwal freeze-dried cow urine + A. squamosa (24h LC50 -97.27mg/l and 96h LC50 -36.19mg/l) kept for 15 days in sunlight (8h/day) was higher than the Geer and Tharparkar freeze-dried cow urine. Toxicity of laboratory condition of Sahiwal freeze-dried cow urine + A. squamosa (24h LC50 -81.40mg/l and 96h LC50 -34.30mg/l) was more toxic than other binary combination of cow breeds and plants molluscicides. The different breeds of cow urine under the 15 days sunlight (8h/day) and laboratory conditions freeze-dried with different plant molluscicides are potent molluscicides.

  • Origin of Order: Emergence and Evolution of Biological Organization as a
           Problem in Thermal Physics

    • Abstract: Publication year:  2011Source:Advances in Life Sciences,  Volume  1,  Number  1  Fouad El-DiastyAccording to a mechanistic and naturalistic view of the origin of life, the reality is evolution — a single process of self-transformation started from a primordial chaotic or random state of matter reaching to modifications through natural selection. The simplest form of life requires thousands of different kinds of molecules, to produce very complex protein DNA and RNA molecules subunits arranged in a precise sequence. Chemical and physical processes acted for many hundreds of millions of years, before true cellular life was brought into being. Biological evolution was able to create complex, harmonic, and very effective biocybernetic control systems governing the DNA behavior and the evolution of animal cognition abilities. But the present postulates on the origin of life do not satisfy the criteria of a scientific immensity theory, where all related laboratory experiments are mere exercises in organic chemistry. The immensity of the problem is appreciated by physics through applying the thermodynamics laws which are indeed universal. The catalysts in biological systems are coded in the genes of the DNA, so is a fourth law needed for thermodynamics about the self-organizing phenomena observed in biology' Can the physics-based theories robustly address phenomena of emergence and evolution without having recourse to the type of vitalism that was in the beginning of the twentieth century' Is the origin of life beclouded because we don't know enough about thermodynamics' Why this should be called a scientific attitude when all the scientific evidences continue to support special creation, or indeed an omnipotent Creator'

  • Optical Coherence-domain Imaging of Subcutaneous Human Blood Vessels in

ProskurinExperimental methods of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) are applied for two-dimensional mapping of subcutaneous human blood vessels. Structural images of in vivo human finger and human palm macro vessels (0.2-1.0 mm) before and after optical clearing using the modified low power rapid scanning optical delay line are presented. Images are scanned with 12 µm minimum spatial resolution. The described modifications enable to apply low power (0.4-0.5 mW), low noise broadband near infrared light source and to obtain structural images with detection of not only reflected but also multiply scattered coherence-gated photons. The achieved transcutaneous probing depth is about 1.6-1.8 mm

  • Influence of Plant Spacing and Weeds on Growth and Yield of Peanut
           (Arachis hypogaea L) in Rain-fed of Sudan

ZaiedA field experiment was conducted for two consecutive seasons to assess the impact of four plant spacing (10, 20, 30 and 40 cm) and three weeding levels (no weeding, weeding once (at two weeks from sowing) and weeding twice (at two weeks and at four weeks) on growth and yield of peanut (groundnut) in rain-fed under Kordofan (Sudan) conditions. A randomized complete block design in four replications was used. The results showed that plant spacing of 10 cm gave 40% more yield than that at 40 cm and was the best for maximizing yield under rain-fed conditions. The growth and yield attributes of groundnut were significantly reduced when the crop was left un weeded. Weeding twice had the highest number of pods per plant, 100- Kernel weight, pods yield per plant and final pod yield (t/h). Weeds reduced pod yield by about 40%. The optimum temperature for the activity of amylase and protease enzymes produced by Bacillus subtilis was 50oC, while 30oC and 40oC was recorded for amylase and protease enzyme produced by Aspergillus niger with an activity of 1.1 mg/ml/sec, 0.8 mg/ml/sec for amylase and protease enzyme by Bacillus subtilis and 0.87 mg/ml/sec, 0.77 mg/ml/sec for amylase and protease produced by Aspergillus niger respectively. Optimum pH was attained at pH 9 for amylase and protease enzyme produced by Bacillus subtilis with an activity of 1.2 mg/ml/sec and 0.83 mg/ml/sec respectively. The optimum pH for the activity of Aspergillus niger was recorded at pH 5 and pH 6 for amylase and protease with an activity of 0.87 mg/ml/sec and 0.74mg/ml/sec respectively. The result showed that both organisms utilized Parkia biglobossa to produce extracellular amylase and protease, but the activity of amylase enzyme produced by both organisms was greater than the activity of protease enzyme and enzymes produced by Bacillus subtilis showed superior activity which can be useful industrially

The green citrus aphid appears during the first week of November on Cosmos bipinnatus and attains a peak during third week of December during 2006-2007. Cause of increase in the population during first half of the November in the field seems due to healthy plants, favourable temperature (around 25ºC) and humidity (above 40% RH) and less predatorism/parasitism. Decrease in population after the peak population may be attributed to low humidity (less than 50% RH) and predatorism/parasitism along with maturity of the crop. Since its population attains single high peak during the crop season, its population can easily be regulated by using any eco-friendly management practice by enhancing the activities of predators (particularly ladybird beetles) as they come along with the aphid.

IbrahimThe study was conducted to determine the effects of four different numbers of plants per stand on the performance of three cowpea varieties under rain-fed conditions. A field experiment was conducted for two successive rainy seasons (2007/08-2008/09) in sandy soil of North Kordofan State, Sudan. The three varieties of cowpea (BLedi, an old local cultivar and two recently improved cultivars, Haydoob and Eien Elgazal) were sown in four patterns (one, two, three and four plants per stand). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) in four replications. The results showed that, plants/stand had a significant effect on most of the attributes measured. Increased plants/stand significantly increased grain yield per unit area and reduced the number of pods per plant, 100-grain weight, grain yield per plant and harvest index. The local cultivar was late in maturity and had heavier 100-grain weight, greater grain yield per plant, greater final grain yield (t/ha). The Ein Elgazal was earlier in maturity and scored the highest values of harvest index.

Surveyed plastic houses at the previous location revealed that the recorded Sclerotinia blight disease incidence was 2.8 and 3.3% for cucumber and pepper plants, respectively. The isolated causal pathogens for cucumber and pepper foliage blights were identified as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary and S. minor Jagger, respectively. This is thought to be the first report of these fungi to cause foliage blights on cucumber and pepper in Egypt. As control measures antagonistic agents and fungicides against the growth both pathogenic fungi under in vitro conditions were evaluated. The obtained results showed complete growth inhibition was recorded for both S. sclerotiorum and S. minor at 100ppm of Topsin-M and Ridomil Gold, while Rizolex-T gave the same effect at 200ppm. The fungicide, Previcure had inhibitor effect on the mycelia growth of both fungi only at the high concentration 800ppm. Moreover, the antagonistic fungi (Trichoderma spp.) showed superior inhibitory effect against the growth of pathogenic fungi compared with bacterial isolates (B. subtilis & P. florescence). No significant differences between the tested antagonistic microorganisms and commercial biocides were observed.

  • Optimization of Laccase Production from Penicillium martensii NRC 345

Laccase formation reaches its maximum value with specific activities of about 7.18 U/mg protein at the twenty-sixth day of incubation at pH 5.5 and 30°C. Galactose (5 g/l) and sodium nitrate (0.2 g/l) were found to be the best carbon and nitrogen sources for laccase formation, respectively. Replacement of galactose instead of glucose at the same concentration increased laccase production by about more than ten-fold. Among the various wastes used wheat bran induces the highest laccase production with specific activity of 39.52 U/mg protein. Tween-80 and CuSO4.5H2O, were also tested for laccase induction.

  • Phytochemical Potential of Annona reticulata Roots for Antiproliferative
           Activity on Human Cancer Cell Lines

Present study includes investigation of bioactive constituents from roots of Annona reticulata for cytotoxic properties against different cancer cell lines. Three aporphine alkaloids liriodenine (AAR-01), norushinsunine (AAR-02), reticuline (AAR-03) and one acetogenin neoannonin (TAR -01) isolated from the roots of Annona reticulata. The structures of the compounds were achieved by1HNMR, 13CNMR and Mass spectroscopic methods. All the isolated compounds subjected for cytotoxicity evaluation against A-549, K- 562, HeLa, MDA-MB cancer cell lines and normal cell lines (Vero cells) by MTT assay. All the isolated compounds exhibited prominent dose-dependent cytotoxicity against all the cancer cell lines at dilutions 5, 10 and 20 μg/ml, whereas TAR -01 showed strong cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from5.8 – 6.9µg/ml. Simultaneously, the effect of all the isolated compounds against Vero cell lines was lower in comparison with the cancer cell lines. The better cytotoxicity of all the isolated compounds the appearance of hydroxyl group at C-7 in AAR-02 could be favourable for increased cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines among aporphine alkaloids and the presence of two hydroxyl groups adjacent to the tetrahydrofuran ring in TAR-01 may be responsible for enhanced activity. The lower cytotoxicity against Vero cell line seems that the isolated constituents AAR-01, AAR-02, AAR-03 and TAR -01 may be used as chemopreventive agents in cancer therapy.

  • Antibacterial Activities of Azadirachta Indica against Some
           Bacterial Pathogens

The phytochemical components of A. indica showed the presence of saponin and phlobatanin and the absence of alkaloids, tannins, phenolics, glycosides, flavonoids and triterpenes. The result showed that the test organisms were susceptible to 500mg/ml, 50mg/ml and 5mg/ml of the plant extract. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined. The result showed that the MIC and MBC were 5mg and 50mg respectively for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Kl. ozanae, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The result of the study suggests that extracts of A. indica could be suitable for the treatment of various infections caused by P. aeruginosa, K. ozanae, S. aureus and E. coli.

  • DNA Fingnerprinting of Eight Cyprinid Fish Species of Iraqi Inland Waters
           Using RAPD-PCR Technique

The DNA fingerprints were identified using RAPD-PCR technique with seven decamere primers. A total of 223 anonymous scorable bands obtained by RAPD-PCR technique across eight cyprinid species genomes. The average of bands per primer was 32 bands, the size of bands estimated using the linear equation of standard curve plot of standard 100 bp ladder. The RAPD markers were used to obtain the similarity indices that were in high value among Barbus species since it ranged from 84.4% between B. xanthopterus and B. kersin to 52% between B. barbulus and B. sharpeyi. While the B. grypus appeared in high similarity indices value (86.9%) with luciscin A. vorax. While C. carpio exhibit high diversity indices value with the Barbus spp.. Therefore the phylogenetic relationships among the eight studied cyprinid species were clearly resolved in dendrograms, they clustered into three branches: the first one included B. xanthopterus, B. kersin, B, barbulus, while the second included B. sharpeyi and B. luteus and the third branch contained B. grypus and A. vorax. Nevertheless, when A. vorax data discarded, the B. grypus return to cluster with B. sharpeyi and B. luteus. Whereas C. carpio functioned as outgroup in both cases. The conclusion of the present study was: molecular patterns showed by RAPD bands represent specific DNA fingerprints and apparently are suitable tool to distinguish among cyprinids. The results clearly revealed that the eight cyprinid taxa are distinctive species. The studied Barbus species are divided into two groups, the first one included B. xanthopterus, B. kersin and B. barbulus which have European Luciobarbus affinities and the second contained B. grypus, B. sharpeyi and B. luteus which they diverged of Luciobarbus but still related to Barbus. So, the Barbus in Iraq is polyphyletic group.

The aim of the present study was to investigate in vivo the genotoxicity/mutagenicity and antigenotoxicity/antimutagenicity potential of the Calendula officinalis L. The CF-1 male mice were treated with ethanolic (250 or 500 mg/Kg) or aqueous (90 mg/Kg) extracts of C. officinalis for 2 weeks prior to treatment with saline or methyl methanesulfonate. No genotoxic or mutagenic effect was observed at the doses of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of C. officinalis in blood and bone marrow samples from animals after 2 weeks of treatment, analyzed by the Comet assay and Micronucleus test, respectively. In addition, ethanolic extracts in both doses (250 or 500 mg/Kg) and aqueous extracts (90 mg/Kg) of this plant showed an antigenotoxic effect by Comet assay, repairing the DNA damage caused by MMS. At the Micronucleus test only aqueous extract of C. officinalis revealed a protector effect to genetic material. These results suggest that all the extracts of C. officinalis contained protective substances that decreasing damage to genetic material. Despite this protective or antigenotoxic effect from this plant, it should be used with caution by the population.

Although, the mother may be unaffected and unaware of the contamination, infants exposed to such agents in-utero may have a number of side effects as these substances readily move across the placental barrier. Heavy metals are dangerous because they have the tendency to bioaccumulate in biological organisms over a period of time. The foetus and newborns are much more sensitive to the effects at low levels of metal exposure and this is mainly due to body weight being less and higher rate of food consumption rate, higher gastrointestinal absorption rate, less effective renal excretion, and a less effective blood-brain barrier. On the other hand, lead is tightly bound to red blood cells, thereby enhancing the transfer from maternal circulation through the placenta to the foetus. Placental transfer begins as early as the twelfth week of gestation. Arsenic is found in drinking water and is a potent toxicant but scanty research has been done on its effect on maternal health. Chromium (Cr6+) accumulates in placenta and impairs foetal development in the placenta. Therefore, the fertile population should prevent themselves from exposure to chemicals, drugs and other environmental agents.

The immune functions of rat macrophages when exposed to sub-cytotoxic concentrations of AFB2 which may make exposed people susceptible to Candida albicans infections, have been assessed. This level of AFB2 significantly prevents immune functions of macrophages by inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) production, mitochondrial membrane potential and intracellular killing of C.albicans by macrophages even in the presence of activating signal, interferon-γ. AFB2-induced prevention of increased membrane potential and intracellular killing of C.albicans by macrophages may be due to the prevention of iNOS (inducible nitric oxide synthetase) activity which results in the suppression of NO production. This study provides an important clue to the possibility that macrophages may give refuge to C.albicans for survival and dissemination and thus C.albicans is capable of inducing self-protective effect by the action of AFB2. The presence of AFB2 would thus help the macrophages to allow the C.albicans to replicate and persist, while being invisible to the immune system. This plausibility will give impetus to medicinal development.

  • Application of Fungicides Alternatives as Seed Treatment for Controlling

The tested antagonistic fungi were Trichoderma harzianum, T. Viride and T. hamatum, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The efficacy of Calcium chloride, Thyme oil and /or bio-agents as seed dressing against disease incidence was evaluated in pot experiments under artificially infested with vegetables root rot causal organisms under greenhouse conditions. All applied treatments reduced significantly root rot incidence at both pre-, and post-emergence growth stages of Cucumber, Cantaloupe, Tomato and Pepper plants comparing with untreated check control. The obtained results showed that combination treatments of Calcium chloride, Thyme oil with bio-agents reduced significantly root rot incidence of all grown vegetables comparing with the application of each of them alone. Obtained results, in the present study, lead to suggest that integration between salt or essential oil and bio-agents is considered an applicable, safe and cost-effective method for controlling such soil-borne diseases.

Between the two species of Pentalonia tested in our earlier study, the typica species expressed lower fitness from banana host plants than the caladii species from taro host plant suggesting strong genotype(aphids)-environment(host plants) interactions and increased genetic variation. This study shows the morphological variations of the two species and the isozyme variations of the two taxa from Araceae and Musaceae plants, respectively, an indicative of this recent separation as the laboratory-reared clones of banana aphid from the host plants also occur as two variants of the aphid species. In the existing conditions of information, the two species can be certainly considered as separate species.

The study was carried out over 24 months in the three reaches of the 200 km- long of Agbokum waterfalls, Nigeria. The influence of season on catch rate, reproduction and diet was determined from catch samples. There was a significant difference in the catch rate between the dry and wet seasons. Peak catch occurred during the early and late rains. The peak breeding period was June - July. The fish were omnivorous, with trophic flexibility being related to food availability. The condition of the fish was better downstream of the waterfalls than the other two reaches, but declined during dry season and improved during early and late rains. Therefore downstream reaches during wet season are significant in the fisheries studies of waterfalls

Moreover, raising young chicks during the juvenile period based on sex determination encourages familiarity, which might increase mating success rates. Thus, this study was carried out to determine the sex of Crested ibis chicks using three primers designed to check their identity. A set of polymerase chain reaction(PCR) primers was used to amplify a 276 bp chromo-helicase-DNA binding protein region(CHD) on the Z chromosome in both sexes, whereas the other set was used to amplify a 169 bp female-specific CHD sequence on the W chromosome. The sequences have been submitted to NCBI(GenBank Accession Number: AB620020, AB620021). This method will enable researchers to determine the gender of Crested ibis more simply and quickly.

EmbabySevere outbreaks of stem or fruit rot symptoms with sclerotial formation were observed as first occurrence during a disease survey of cucumber and pepper crops during the cool season, 2011 in the Protected Cultivation Station, Ministry of Agriculture located at Tookh province, Qalubiya governorate, Egypt. This disease appears during the growing season at the seedling or mature stages of plant growth. Recently, interest has been shown in combining microbial biocontrol agents with other chemical components to increase their activity against plant pathogens. To reach the proposed aim determination of the efficacy of some plant-derived essential oils, plant resistance inducers and plant extracts in combination with biocontrol agents against the growth of Sclerotinia foliage blight pathogens S. sclerotiorum and S. minor was carried out under in vitro conditions. The obtained results in the present study has shown the potential of tested materials as effective inhibitors against pathogenic fungi when combined factors with antagonistic bioagents.

  • Greenhouse Biological Approach for Controlling Foliar Diseases of Some

Abdel-KareemEvaluation the efficacy of bio-agents, application as foliar spray against vegetables foliar diseases incidence was carried out in open greenhouse conditions. The tested bio-agents were Trichoderma harzianum, T. Viride, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescensand Saccharomyces cerevisiae were evaluated. The recorded foliar diseases, i.e. Powdery, Downy mildews of Cucumber, Cantaloupe and Pepper as well as Early, Late blights of Tomato were significantly reduced at all treatments either alone or in combinations comparing with untreated plants. Application with either T. harzianum and B. subtilis showed significant reduction in diseases incidence comparing with the other applied bio-agents. The other bio-agent treatments, T. viride, P. fluorescens and S. cerevisiae recorded moderate reduction in this concern. On the light of the present study it could be suggested that the usage of bio-agents might be used as easily applied, safely and cost effective control methods against such foliar plant diseases.

  • When Posture is Controlled, Acute Hypoxia does not Decrease Core

BuonoIt has been reported that acute hypoxia causes a reduction in core temperature in humans. It was hypothesized that this occurs due to both a decrease in metabolic rate and an increase in skin blood flow. However, other studies have found that core temperature decreases with changes in posture. The methods in previous studies finding hypoxia to decrease core temperature did not control for postural changes. Thus, further examination is warranted to examine the effect of hypoxia on core temperature while controlling for posture change. Ten healthy adults, between the ages of 18 and 45 were recruited to participate. Subjects completed one trial consisting of breathing normoxic air (20.9%) for a 2 hour period and hypoxic air for a 1 hour period, while systematically changing posture. During this time core temperature and skin blood flow were recorded every 5 minutes. The results showed that mean core body temperature significantly (p < 0.05) decreased by 0.4℃ when the subjects transitioned from a standing to lying position. However, acute hypoxia, which reduced the mean oxygen saturation to 85%, did not significantly affect core temperature. Such results suggest that when posture is controlled, acute hypoxia does not significantly decrease core body temperature. Thus, the results of previous studies that have reported decreases in core temperature with acute hypoxia, but failed to control for posture, need to be questioned.

  • In Vitro Production of Cucurbitacins From Trichosanthes c ucumerina L.

Attard,Raghunandan DThe objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of growth regulators in callus induction, increase of biomass and to the yield more of cucurbitacin and cucurbitacin-E in leaf explants of Trichosanthes cucumerina L. var. cucumerina. The explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of auxins like 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D), [alpha]-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), Indole butyric acid (IBA), Indole acetic acid (IAA), cytokinins like Kinetin (kn) and Benzyl adenine (BA). The different concentrations and combinations of BAP + IBA, 2, 4-D + BAP and 2, 4-D + kn increased the callus of fresh weight and dry weight. Among all concentrations and combinations, the best results revealed that leaf-derived callus cultured on 2,4-D (3.0mg-l) + kin (1.0 mg-l) produced the highest total cucurbitacins content with an optimum yield 4.9% w/w and cucurbitacin-E 2.75% w/w at third week.

  • Molecular Genetics of Acute Myeloid Leukemia

    • Abstract: Publication year:  2011Source:Advances in Life Sciences,  Volume  1,  Number  1  Nosheen Ashraf,Saba IrshadAcute myeloid leukemia (AML) is categorized by an increase in the number of myeloid cells in the marrow and an arrest in their maturation, frequently resulting in hematopoietic insufficiency. A common theme in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) associated with balanced reciprocal translocations is the involvement of transcription factors as one or both of the fusion partners. Transcription factors commonly involved in chromosomal translocations include core binding factor (CBF), retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARα), mutations of the NPM1, FLT3, and CEBPA genes. The panel of known molecular markers is continuously increasing, for example, considering the recently described TET2 and IDH1 mutations. Monitoring of the minimal residual disease load with quantitative real-time PCR can be performed for NPM1 and other mutation cases. In addition, the recruitment of transcriptional co-activators and co-repressors by these transcription factors suggests that these proteins also may play a critical role in leukaemogenesis. CBP and p300 have been recently cloned. Treatment for patients younger than 60 years consists of cytotoxic “chemotherapy” and might cure 20–75%, depending primarily on leukemia cell cytogenetics. However, chemotherapy produces such a result in less than 10% of elderly patients because of their inability to survive treatment and, mainly, the association of old age with cytogenetic abnormalities involving chromosomes 5 and 7.The introduction of next generation sequencing will certainly catalyze the molecular characterization of AML.

  • The Critically Endangered Flora and Fauna of District Battagram Pakistan

A total of 22 species were reported as Critically Endangered locally including 12 plant and 10 animal species. The data were collected through field observation and from the natives. Major threats to the flora and fauna of the study area are loss of habitat, unplanned collection, deforestation, over grazing, erosion, attack of pathogens, effect of introduced taxa and hunting, shooting and trapping of wild animals.

  • Dose-dependent Attenuating Effects of Aqueous Extract of C arica papaya
           Seed on CarbonTetrachloride-Induced Renal Toxicity in Rats

    • Abstract: Publication year:  2011Source:Advances in Life Sciences,  Volume  1,  Number  1  Eze Kingsley NwangwaA reasonable population of the world today uses herbal drugs.Carica papaya is one of those fruits that is documented to have the potentials of being used for medicinal purposes.In the present study, theeffects of aqueous extract of Carica papaya seeds on a CCl4-induced renal toxicity was studied. A total of thirty (30) Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups (n=6). Group 1 (control)was administered with rat chow and water. Group 2,3,4 and 5 received CCl4intraperitoneally (IP) at a dose of 0.8mg/kg and group 3, 4 and 5 received in addition 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 300mg/kg extract of Carica papayafor 28 days orally respectively. Samples were collected and assayed for the renal function markers (urea, creatinine and electrolyte). Results obtained showed a dose-dependent statistically-significant decrease in therenal function markers except potassium, which suggests that the extract has a nephro-protective effect. These findings need be further investigated for application in the health care delivery.
