  • Assessing the Menace of Illegal Wildlife Trade in the Sub Saharan African
           Region

Ochai, S. Leggett, E. NwagbosoOver the last years, the rapid increase in wildlife trade and the continued disappearance of endangered species has reached a frightening frequency in Africa. While such practices not only undermine sustainability, biodiversity and habitat protection, environmental services provided by natural areas and the species contained therein command infinite value. In the process, the incidence of poaching and illegal wildlife trade area threatens the protection of numerous bird mammal and amphibian species with extinction. In the face of all these, the species at risk lack protection over any part of their ranges due to the costs of management and hosts of socio-economic and physical elements. The heinous nature of these practices comes at the expense of biodiversity protection, global heritage and assets of communities endangered in different countries of Sub Saharan Africa region (SSA). Considering the gravity, illegal wildlife trade has emerged as an international development and environmental issue since it weakens security, rule of law, and any initiatives to boost biodiversity and eradicate acute deprivation. In these nations, various individuals depend on forests, wildlife and fisheries for their survival. When people loose wildlife access and security because of organized criminals involved in the illicit trades, society gives up the critical apparatuses essential in the eradication of impoverishment and sustenance of biodiversity. Just as the disappearance of biodiversity and the presence of violent elements linked to trafficking, reduce the prospects for sustainable development and the stability of environmental systems, including eco-tourism. Protecting wildlife from poaching and illegal trafficking in that setting, helps secure our global heritage in the fight against criminal networks that exploit humans and nature by threatening national security and rule of law. Due to these lapses, there has been a growing interest in highlighting the experience of nations in SSA region known for abundant wildlife and species diversity. Accordingly, this paper assesses the menace to endangered wildlife in the SSA region. With emphasis on the issues, ecological analysis, impacts, the factors influencing it and mitigation efforts, the paper uses a mix scale methodology of descriptive statistics and GIS to analyze the trends spatially. While results point to declines in wildlife species among these countries and spatial diffusion of the trends and the role of several factors, the study recommended several measures ranging from education to the strengthening of policies through a coordinated global action plan to stem the savagery.
       
  • The Comparative Study of 8Hz EMF Effect on Tissue Hydration in Brain
           Cortex and Subcortex of Rats

Therefore, in order to elucidate the possible mechanism of 8Hz EMF on brain function, in the present work the studies of 8Hz EMF exposure effect on brain tissue hydration, the sensitivity of 8Hz EMF-induced tissue hydration to 10-4M ouabain (Na+/K+ pump inhibition) and 10-9M ouabain (activation of intracellular signaling system) as well as 8Hz EMF exposure effect on the number of Na+/K+ pump units in the membrane of both young and old rats have been performed. The obtained data allow us to suggest that 8Hz EMF exposure has age-dependent modulation effect on brain tissue hydration and this effect is sensitive to Na+/K+ pump activity and intracellular signaling system. It has been shown that, in spite of the fact that the number of expressed Na+/K+ pump units in cell membrane of subcortex is significantly less expressed than in cortex cells, the sensitivity of signaling system controlling cell hydration to 8Hz EMF in subcortex cells is more pronounced than in cortex ones.
       
  • An Ethnobotanical Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) in Indonesia. A Review

How to suppress nicotine content that includes as harmful components in the study of high biotechnology. The collected data were supported bases references and survey. Tobacco uses are having an excellent significance in supporting socio-cultural ties, especially indigeous ancestors in strengthening the unity of society in Indonesia. Thus, tobacco product also has negative effects for human’s health. So that, it is requires right solution to solve the problem toward that tobacco product.
       
  • Physiological Effects of Carbofuran on Earthworm Pheretima javanica Gates

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2017Source: Advances in Life Sciences, Volume 7, Number 2Erwin Nofyan, Syafrina Lamin, Innocenthya Tygra Patriot, Mohammad KanediCarbofuran is a carbamate pesticide that has known to possess adverse effects in soil organisms including earthworms that potentially lead to changes in nutrient cycling. However, little is known about the effects of carbofuran, either dirrectly or indirrectly, on the earthworm Pheretimajavanica. This research is intended to know the effect of carbofuran at sublethal doses on the food consumption rate, assimilation efficiency and growth rate of Pheretimajavanicaworms. Six concentration levels of treatment were prepared by concecutively adding carbofuran granules as much as 0 mg (for control), 0.1mg, 0.2mg, 0.3mg, 0.4mg and 0.5mg into the worm foods (100 mg of cow manure). The feeding parameters were based on the dry weight of the worms, food given and remnant food, and worm feces (casts) during three days of treatment. Growth rate of the worms was based on the weekly weight gain of the young worm treated for eight weeks. The results showed the consumption rate decreased, assimilation efficiency increased and growth rate decreased significantly by the increased concentration of the pesticide (α = 0.05). Thus, it can be conclusively suggested that carbofuran (Furadan 3G) highly harmful to earthworms, even at low concentrations.
       
  • Phytotelmata Might Account for the High Prevalence of Dengue Hemorrhagic
           Fever in Lampung, Indonesia

Yet, such small ponds tend to be neglected by the country health authorities in setting eradication program of the disease vectors. This study aimed to find out whether phytotelmata contribute in providing breeding place for vector mosquito of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF)- the Ades larvae. The survey carried out in four districts namely Pesawaran, Metro, Pringsewu and Bandar Lampung and lasted from March to August 2016. Phytotelmic criteria of the study were every structures present in plants which allow rain water to impound and showed the signs of life exist in it. The phytotelmata containing Aedes mosquito larvae were assessed for its physical parameters and the data resulted were analysed and presented descriptively. There were six types of phytotelmata found namely leaf axils, tree holes, tree stumps, fallen spathe, fruit shells, and fallen leaves. The Aedes larvae found belong to only two species, i.e. Aedes albopictus(n=373) and Aedes crysolineatus (n=26).
       
  • Nutritional Status of Fodder Tree Leaves and Shrubs of Scarcity Zone of
           Maharashtra1

KadlagThe intent of this experiment was to figure out the nutritive value of fodder tree leaves and shrubs of dryland area in Solapur district, Maharashtra. The climate of this region is characterized by a relatively low annual rainfall (594.8 mm) and it varies from 594.8 to 655.6 mm from year to year. Temperature during winter is 22.5°C and summer 40.1°C. The average annual total evaporation is 2817.7 mm. Leaves of fodder trees and shrubs were selected and analyzed for dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ash, crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), hemicelluloses and proximate composition. The mean per cent values for DM, CF, CP, NDF, ADF, and hemicelluloses were 32.66, 22.60, 4.79, 55.75, 47.97 and 7.81 per cent respectively. The average per cent of ash, calcium and phosphorus in fodder tree leaves and shrubs were 8.28, 2.18 and 0.235 respectively. Where, iron, zinc and manganese were 3419, 51 and 252 µg g-1 respectively.
       
  • Enhancing Soluble Gene Expression of α-amylase Bacillus licheniformis and
           Purification of Recombinant Protein

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2017Source: Advances in Life Sciences, Volume 7, Number 1Ayesha Pervaiz, Barizah Malik, Naeem Rashidα-amylase is an endoglucan hydrolase that catalyzes the cleavage of α(1-4) glycosidic linkage between glucose residues of polysaccharides. α-amylase involved in starch degradation plays a wide role in the starch industry. Also, it has many applications in other industries as it is being employed in detergent industry, food industry, paper industry, pharmaceuticals and sugar industry. This enzyme shows optimized activity at 40-100°C and a pH of 6.5. α-amylase is a metalloenzyme and Ca+2 ions play an important role in its thermostability and activity. Recombinant α-amylase, from Bacillus licheniformis strain ATCC 27811, was produced in Escherichia coli. Enzyme expression was optimized and intracellular protein expression in soluble form was found with 306 total units of enzyme activity. The enzyme was heat treated at 70°C and it showed its thermostability. The enzyme was purified using the single step purification technique of Ni+2 affinity column chromatography.

Tamarind (Tamarindus indicaL) is a leguminous tree in the family Fabaceae indigenous to tropical Africa. The genus Tamarindus is a monotypic taxon, having only a single species. The tamarind tree produces edible, pod-like fruit which is used extensively in cuisines around the world. Other uses include traditional medicine and metal polish. The wood can be used in carpentry. Because of the tamarind's many uses, cultivation has spread around the world in tropical and subtropical zones [1].Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) is a multipurpose tropical tree used primarily because its fruits and leaves have eatable properties. Both parts of the plant have also medicinal uses, but in the specific case of the leaves, little information about their chemical composition is available. In this paper, we explore the tamarind leaves’ composition of dry crude leaf matter to subject to heavy metals, NPK and phytochemical analysis by standard methods. Crude leaves matter employing Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), and total Kjeldahl digests by UV-VIS spectrophotometry and K analysis was done in Kjeldal digests by Flame photometry method. Results confirm the production of essential oils, free and conjugated fatty acids, flavonoids, and other compounds, but also indicated the presence of seven heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Ni, Mn, Fe, Ca, and Mg) and N.P.K. compounds for this part of the plants.

           and Indigenous Bengal Sheep in View of In vitro Maturation

To characterize the ovarian parameters and to study interspecies variation this research was conducted. Ovaries were collected from local slaughterhouse and categorized as left/right and CL-present/absent. After evaluation in terms of weight, length, width, height, number of atretic and non-atretic follicle in; Cumulus Oocyte Complexes were collected from 90% of the ovaries and remaining 10% were subjected to histological study. After tissue preparation and staining with Haematoxylene and Eosin stain, the diameter of primordial, primary and secondary follicles; thickness of follicular layers of graffian follicles were measured. It was observed that left and right ovaries were equally active to normal physiological and/or ovarian activity, as the parameters of both ovaries in both species were similar (P>0.05).   • Bacteriological Quality of Drinking Water Sources of Hail, Saudi Arabia

A total of 90 water samples were collected from 10 different sites of Hail area. To find out pathogenic bacteria, culturing technique was used followed by staining for identification of bacterial isolates. Then Phoenix system was used for identification of bacterial species. Some of the tested samples contained pathogenic bacteria, especially those of natural. Five different bacterial species were found including Escherichiacoli (E.coli), Psuedomonasaeruginosa(P.aeruginosa), Salmonella, Klebsiella, Staplylococcus and Enterobacteraerogenes. E.coli was mostly isolated species that was identified in 24 samples (26.66%) followed by P.aeruginosa: 11 samples (12.22%), Klebsiella: 8 samples (8.88%) and Salmonella: 6 samples (6.66%). This study concludes that disinfection of water should be implemented to reduce water borne diseases, water supplying departments have to follow WHO standards for better public health and to control disease outbreak by coliforms.
