  • Relative condition factor: Le Cren's legacy for fisheries science

    • Abstract: : Aim In this paper we present a scientometric analysis aimed at to assess and quantify the contribution of Le Cren’s condition factor and the main ideas advanced by ‘Le Cren, 1951’ to studies on the health of individuals or populations in aquatic environments. Specifically, we addressed the following questions: (i) what are the temporal and spatial citation trends of ‘Le Cren, 1951’'; (ii) Which journals cited ‘Le Cren, 1951’ most frequently'; (iii) In which types of aquatic environments and organisms have Le Cren’s condition factor been most commonly applied'; (iv) Which of the main applications addressed in ‘Le Cren, 1951’ have been most frequently used by fisheries scientists'; (v) Which of the methods (i.e., Quételet’s index or body mass index, Fulton’s condition factor, Le Cren’s condition factor, relative weight, residual index and scaled mass index) used to estimate condition factor identified in the papers that cited ‘Le Cren, 1951’ have been most frequently used' In addition, the main criticisms of the use of the relative condition factor are discussed. Methods We carried out a scientometric analysis on the papers published from 1951 to December 2015 that cited Le Cren’s article. The papers were obtained from the Thomson Reuters database (ISI Web of Knowledge, apps.isiknowledge.com) in May 2016. Results In total, 1128 papers were assessed. The number of citations increased significantly over time. Most citations occurred in two journals (Journal of Fish Biology and Journal of Applied Ichthyology). Most of papers were carried out in marine environments. In addition, we show that Le Cren's paper has been cited mainly in articles that estimate the condition factor or the weight-length relationship of populations. Finally, we emphasize that the relative condition factor proposed by Le Cren in 1951 is still the main method used to estimate the body condition of an individual or population. Conclusions Le Cren's significant contribution to animal well-being is undeniable, and we emphasize that among the methods identified in the papers that cited ‘Le Cren, 1951’ that estimated body condition, the relative condition factor proposed by Le Cren in 1951 is still the most commonly used method.Resumo: Objetivo Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma análise cienciométrica para avaliar e quantificar a contribuição do fator de condição relativo e das principais ideias propostas por ‘Le Cren, 1951’ em estudos sobre a saúde de um indivíduo ou população em ambientes aquáticos. Conclusões Assim, a contribuição significativa de Le Cren para o estudo da saúde animal é inegável e nós enfatizamos que entre os métodos, identificados nos artigos que citaram ‘Le Cren, 1951’, para estimar a condição corporal, o fator de condição relativo proposto por Le Cren ainda é o mais utilizado.
       
  • Application of multivariate methods and geoestatistics to model the
           relationship between CO2 emissions and physicochemical variables in the
           Hidrosogamoso reservoir, Colombia

    • Abstract: : Aim This article deals with the estimation of a model for CO2 emissions in the Hidrosogamoso reservoir based on the organic matter level and water quality. This is in order to determine the impact of the creation of a tropical reservoir on the generation of greenhouse gases (GHG), and to establish the water quality and emissions dynamics. We hypothesize that the spatial variability of emissions is determined by water quality and carbon cycling in water. Methods Multivariate techniques were applied to determine the relationships between CO2 and certain physicochemical variables measured in the reservoir between February and May 2015, taking samples in 10 stations and measuring 14 variables (water quality parameters and CO2). Factor, cluster, discriminant and regression analysis, as well as the geostatistical technique kriging, were used. Results We observed that all variables except dissolved organic carbon have strong linear relationships. Nitrate, total-P, total solids and total suspended solids are related due to the presence of nutrients in the water; chlorophyll a and biodegradable dissolved organic carbon due to organic carbon; and alkalinity and dissolved solids due to dissolved minerals. The sampling stations can be classified into two homogeneous groups. The first consists of the stations peripheral to the reservoir and the second of stations inside the reservoir. This difference is due mainly to the behavior of chlorophyll a and biodegradable dissolved organic carbon, and these two variables are also the best predictors for CO2, with a maximum adjustment of 70%. Conclusions Our main conclusion is that the production of CO2 is due to decomposition of flooded organic carbon, depends on the soils flooded and the tributary water quality, and that the production of this gas will, based on the literature, continue for 5 to 10 years depending on the nature of the forest flooded.Resumo: Objetivo Este artigo trata de estimar um modelo de emissões de CO2 no reservatório Hidrosogamoso a partir da matéria orgânica e da qualidade da água, para determinar o impacto da criação de um reservatório tropical na geração de gases de efeito estufa (GEE) e estabelecer a dinâmica da qualidade da água e das emissões. Nossa hipótese é que a variabilidade espacial das emissões é forçada pela qualidade da água e pelo ciclo do carbono na água. Métodos Técnicas multivariadas foram aplicadas para determinar as relações entre o CO2 e determinadas variáveis físico-químicas medidas no reservatório entre fevereiro e maio de 2015, tomando amostras em 10 estações e medindo 14 variáveis (parâmetros de qualidade da água e CO2). Foram usadas as técnicas estatísticas de Fator, Cluster, Análise Discriminante e Regressiva, bem como a técnica geoestatística de krigagem. Resultados Observamos que todas as variáveis, exceto o carbono orgânico dissolvido, possuem fortes relações lineares. Nitrato, P-total, sólidos totais e sólidos suspensos totais estão relacionados devido à presença de nutrientes na água; clorofila a e carbono orgânico dissolvido biodegradável devido ao carbono orgânico; e alcalinidade e sólidos dissolvidos devido a minerais dissolvidos. As estações de amostragem podem ser classificadas em dois grupos homogêneos. O primeiro consiste nas estações periféricas do reservatório e a segunda das estações no interior do reservatório. Essa diferença é devido principalmente ao comportamento da clorofila e do carbono orgânico dissolvido biodegradável, e essas duas variáveis também são os melhores preditores para o CO2, com um ajuste máximo de 70%. Conclusões Nossa principal conclusão é que a produção de CO2 é devido à decomposição do carbono orgânico inundado, aos solos inundados e à qualidade da água dos afluentes, e que a produção deste gás continuará, de acordo com a literatura, por 5 ou 10 anos, dependendo da natureza da floresta inundada.
       
  • Phytoplankton as bioindicators of water quality in Nasarawa reservoir,
           Katsina State Nigeria

    • Abstract: : Aim Phytoplankton monitoring as bioindicators to assess the health of the Nasarawa reservoir and also to evaluate the relationship between phytoplankton and reservoir environmental variables. Methods Phytoplankton and water samples from Nasarawa reservoir (Nigeria) were collected and analysed for ten months (February, 2018 to November, 2018) using standard methods at five sampling sites. Results A total of 38 genera belonging to five major families such as: Bacillariophyceae (42%), Chlorophyceae (24%) Cyanophyceae (13%), Deemidiaceae (18%) and Euglenophyceae (3%) were recorded. Four Phytoplankton classes; Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta Cyanophyta, and Desmidiaceae show positive close relation with dissolved oxygen, pH, transparency, and total dissolved solids. The overall phytoplankton density in the reservoir was higher in dry season than the wet season. Palmer pollution index was employed to study the water quality of the reservoir. The total score was calculated to be 25, showing evidence of high organic pollution. Conclusions The presence of organic pollution indicators Closterium sp, Navicula sp, Nitzschia sp, Synedra sp, Chlamydomonas sp, Cyclotella sp and Anacystis sp is a warning sign of the deteriorating condition of the water quality in the reservoir. Measures need to be enforced to reduce the rate of pollution of the reservoir arising from the human activities in the catchment of the reservoir.Resumo: Objetivo Monitoramento do fitoplâncton como bioindicador para avaliar a condição do reservatório de Nasarawa e também avaliar a relação entre o fitoplâncton e as variáveis ​​ambientais do reservatório. Métodos Amostras de fitoplâncton e água do reservatório de Nasarawa (Nigéria) foram coletadas e analisadas de forma padronizada durante dez meses (fevereiro de 2018 a novembro de 2018) em cinco locais de amostragem. Resultados Foram registrados 38 gêneros pertencentes a cinco principais famílias: Bacillariophyceae (42%), Chlorophyceae (24%) Cyanophyceae (13%), Deemidiaceae (18%) e Euglenophyceae (3%). Quatro classes de fitoplâncton; Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta Cyanophyta e Desmidiaceae mostram relação positiva com oxigênio dissolvido, pH, transparência e sólidos totais dissolvidos. A densidade total de fitoplâncton no reservatório foi maior na estação seca do que na estação chuvosa. O índice de poluição de Palmer foi empregado para avaliar a qualidade da água do reservatório. A pontuação total foi calculada em 25, mostrando evidências de poluição orgânica elevada. Conclusões A presença de indicadores de poluição orgânica Closterium sp, Navicula sp, Nitzschia sp, Synedra sp, Chlamydomonas sp, Cyclotella sp e Anacystis sp é um sinal de alerta para a deterioração das condições da qualidade da água do reservatório. Medidas são necessárias para reduzir a taxa de poluição do reservatório decorrente das atividades humanas na bacia hidrográfica do reservatório.
       
  • Environmental drivers and composition of assemblages of immature odonates
           (Insecta) in a subtropical island in southern Brazil

    • Abstract: : Aim Describe the diversity of immature stages of Odonata (Insecta) in streams from a subtropical island in southern Brazil and investigate the influence of environmental variables on the composition of their assemblages. Methods Eleven low-order streams (1st to 3rd order) were sampled in two conservation units located in the island of Santa Catarina (southern Brazil) between 2010 and 2012. Immature specimens of Odonata were collected using a Surber sampler. The influence of water abiotic parameters and habitat structure (mesohabitats: riffle vs. pool areas, microhabitats: litter vs. stone substrates) on the composition of Odonata was tested through the seasons using ordination diagrams and redundancy analysis. Results Nine odonate genera from seven families were recorded in the study region. The genera Desmogomphus, Epigomphus (Gomphidae), Heteragrion (Heteragrionidae) and Perilestes (Perilestidae) have their first records described for the state of Santa Catarina. Additionally, biological notes are provided for other odonate genera concerning substrate use. The composition of Odonata communities changed over the seasons and they were influenced by water temperature and velocity. Additionally, odonate composition differed significantly between microhabitats (substrate type) and mesohabitats (riffle vs. pool areas) in the streams studied. Conclusions The lower genera richness of Odonata recorded in the island of Santa Catarina in relation to other Brazilian subtropical streams is probably associated with the insular condition of the study region. This study also demonstrated that substrate (organic and inorganic) and mesohabitat (riffle and pool) types were important drivers of the composition of the fauna of immature odonates, evidencing the role of climate and habitat structure in influencing subtropical stream insect communities.Resumo: Objetivos Descrever a diversidade de estágios imaturos de Odonata (Insecta) em riachos de uma ilha subtropical no sul do Brasil e investigar a influência de preditores ambientais sobre a composição de suas comunidades. Métodos Onze riachos de baixa ordem (entre 1ª e 3ª ordem) foram amostrados em duas unidades de conservação localizadas na ilha de Santa Catarina entre 2010 e 2012. Indivíduos imaturos de Odonata foram coletados com amostrador tipo Surber. A influência de parâmetros abióticos da água e da estrutura de habitat dos riachos (mesohabitats: trechos de corredeira vs. remanso; microhabitats: substratos folhiço vs. pedra) sobre a variação sazonal da composição de Odonata foi testada através de diagramas de ordenação e análise de redundância. Resultados Nove gêneros pertencentes a sete famílias de Odonata foram registrados na região de estudo. Os gêneros Desmogomphus, Epigomphus (Gomphidae), Heteragrion (Heteragrionidae) e Perilestes (Perilestidae) são registrados pela primeira vez no estado de Santa Catarina. Adicionalmente, novas anotações biológicas em relação ao uso do habitat são registradas para outros gêneros. A composição das comunidades de Odonata variou sazonalmente e foram influenciadas pela temperatura da água e vazão. Adicionalmente, a composição da fauna diferiu significativamente entre trechos de corredeira e remanso e entre tipos de substrato nos riachos amostrados. Conclusões A menor riqueza de gêneros de Odonata registrada na ilha de Santa Catarina em relação a outros riachos subtropicais brasileiros deve estar relacionada à condição insular da região de estudo. Além disso, este estudo demonstrou que os tipos de substrato (orgânicos e inorgânicos) e de mesohabitat (corredeira e remanso) foram importantes preditores ambientais da composição da fauna de imaturos de Odonata, evidenciando a influência do clima e da estrutura de habitat sobre as comunidades de insetos de riachos subtropicais.
