  • Activity of Mycoplasma synoviae in Commercial Chickens in Ghana:
           Serological Evidence

    • Authors: Ayim-Akonor Matilda; Andoh Aurelia Linda, Arthur Cornelius, Kortei Nii Korley, Toah Akonor Paa
Abstract: A total of 390 chicken sera were collected from respiratory disease free broilers, breeders and layers in the Ga-East district of Ghana and tested for Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) antibodies using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit from IDEXX Inc. USA.  The overall sero-prevalence of MS was obtained to be 46.2%. The sero-prevalence among breeders and broilers were 0% each. MS sero-prevalence among layers ranged between 60% -85% and differed significantly among different ages (p< 0.05).  The overall MS sero-prevalence among layers was 75%. It is concluded that Mycoplasma synoviae circulate in layer farms in the district. Layer birds at peak production age are at higher risk of infection. Keywords: Mycoplasma synoviae, chicken, Sero-prevalence, Ghana
  • Conservation of Insect Pollinators through Indigenous Traditional and
           Western Scientific Knowledge

    • Authors: Wisdom Harrison K. Hordzi
Abstract: Though useful indigenous knowledge systems are abound they are often overlooked by Western scientific research and development because of the oral tradition and certain inherent limitations in indigenous knowledge systems. This paper explores the usefulness of insect pollinators, harmful practices to the insect pollinators and their conservation, traditional indigenous knowledge that exists about insect pollinators, as well as the need for infusion of traditional indigenous knowledge and western scientific knowledge in the conservation and preservation of insect pollinators. The paper espouses the numerous benefits of insect pollinators right down from ecological to religious, financial and aesthetic. It also delved into some deliberate and inadvertent human practices that threaten the very existence of insect pollinators and the consequences. It is clear from the literature that though indigenous traditional knowledge about insect pollinators is in somewhat confused state its role and importance as a basis for participatory development is well recognized. Basically, several tacit indigenous traditional processes from diverse communities are in place to conserve insect pollinators. Some of such processes are facilitated by research scientists in the form of projects. Hence, more collaboration between indigenous traditionalists and research scientists in pollinator conservation is a step in the right direction and should be encouraged. • Temporal Recovery of Pancreatic β-Cells in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Induced by Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Conditioned Medium

    • Authors: Teguh Budipitojo; Irma Padeta, Widagdo Sri Nugroho, Ida Fitriana
Abstract: Conditioned medium (CM) derived from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell culture has been studied in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and showed a good prospect as an alternative treatment. However, effects of CM in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) have not been studied. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived conditioned medium (CM) for the recovery of pancreatic β-cells in T2DM-induced Wistar Rats (Rattus norvegicus). The T2DM-induced rats were prepared by applying combination injection of nicotinamide (NA) and streptozotocin (STZ). The T2DM-induced rats were treated with 0.2 ml CM fourth times periodically, with a week interval. One week after each CM treatment, the pancreas glands were collect, fixed in Bouin’s solution, processed by paraffin method and carried out immunohistochemistry staining for insulin detection. The blood samples were collected for glucose concentration evaluation. Microscopic observation indicated the decrease of immunoreactive cell number and its intensity towards insulin after the combination injection of NA and STZ. One week after first and second CM treatment, the presence of numerous and hight intensity of insulin- immunoreactive (IR) cells in the pancreatic islets could be observed. However, the number of insulin-IR cells and its intensity decreased dramatically 1 week after the third CM treatment and almost disappeared in 1 week after the fourth CM treatment in all of the pancreatic islets. The histological features changes of insulin-IR cells are in agreement with the profile dynamics of glucose concentration in the blood. This study showed that conditioned medium (CM) derived from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell culture has ability to recover the insulin production from pancreatic β-cells in T2DM-induced Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) temporary. Keywords: conditioned medium, type 2 diabetes mellitus, pancreatic β-cells, temporal recovery, nicotinamide-streptozotocin
  • Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors, Identification of C-Kit Mutation and
           Differential Diagnosis

    • Authors: Teona Bushati; Leart Berdica, Erisa Kola
Abstract: Background: Prior to the recognition of C-Kit mutations, GIST were most commonly classified as leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma, leiomyoblastoma or Autonomic nervous system gastrointestinal tumor. This is why, for the accurate histologic diagnosis of these tumors, it is necessary to record the C-Kit mutation and to identify some other molecular markers that help in differential diagnosis. C-Kit mutation detection is a criterion for morphologic diagnosis and also it serves as a predictive factor for determining the therapy with Imatinib (Glivec) if it is present in these tumors. Objectives: Evaluation of 49 cases of C-Kit mutations and differential diagnosis assessment by IHC examinations.Material and Methods: The study is a retrospective cohort type. 49 patients was evaluated the C-Kit mutation and further IHC examinations for differential diagnosis with other similar lesions. For this purpose the immunoreactivity for CD117, CD34, Actin, Desmin, S100 was evaluated. In these cases, the proliferative index with Ki67 was also evaluated as a prognostic factor together with the tumor diameter and presence or not of necrosis. Results: In the cases studied the presence of c-kit mutation (CD117 positive) was detected in 97% of the examined cases, CD34 was found positive in 77% of the examined cases, SMA was found positive in 34% of the examined cases, Desmin was found positive in 17% of the examined cases, S100 was found positive in 7% of the examined cases. Ki67 resulted to be on average 17.6% in cases with mitotic index> 5/50 HPF and on average 5.7% in cases with mitotic index <5/50% HPF Conclusions: Most of the mesenchymal tumors in the gastrointestinal system are Gastrointestinal Stromal type. This tumor is diagnosed in most cases if C-Kit mutation (positive immunoreactivity for CD117) is identified. Other immunostains like CD34, SMA, Desmin,  S100, help in the diagnose by differentiating this tumor from other histologically similar lesions. Proliferative index determination by Ki67 serves for the differentiation of these tumors into two prognostic categories. Keywords: GIST, C-KIT mutations, differential diagnosis, malignant behavior
  • Lymphoepithelioma-like Gastric Carcinoma (LELGC): A Case Report and Review
           of Literature

    • Authors: Teona Bushati; Erisa Kola, Leart Berdica
Abstract: Lymphoepithelioma-like gastric carcinoma (LELGC),  is a rare type of gastric cancer characterized by a carcinoma with intense stromal lymphocytic infiltration. It is one of the histological patterns observed in patients with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated gastric carcinoma. According to the World Health Organisation classification of tumors of digestive sysytem 2010, LELGC is a rare type of tubular carcinoma. Although this entity is hard to be recognized in the biopsy specimens, pathologists and clinicians should acknowledge this subset of gastric cancer because it generally has a better prognosis than other forms of EBV-associated gastric carcinomas and conventional gastric carcinomas. This might be due to the fact that the patient's inflammatory response may prevent the spread of tumor through the gastric wall and to the lymph nodes or remote organs.(21) In order to gain a detailed understanding of this rare disease, we reviewed the literature and report here a recent case of epithelioid gastric cancer in a 60 year old male patient presented in our Emergency Department. Keywords: Lymphoepithelioma-like Gastric Carcinoma, gastric cancer , Ebstein-Barr virus, prognosis
  • Management Approach to Thyroid Cancer in Albania

    • Authors: Igli Kokalari; Sokol Buba, Islam Mamica, Arben Dhima, Teona Berdica-Bushati, Leart Berdica
Abstract: Thyroid cancer is a cancer that starts in the thyroid gland. In Albania, thyroid cancer is rare disease, according to available data, which are not solid and up to date data, referred to 2014 to a paper named “Actualities in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Thyroid Cancer in Albania” by D. Gjergji et al., data from Clinic of General Surgery, UHC “Mother Theresa” in Tirana and the Registry of the Department of Pathology during the period 2004 – 2011, there were suspected 262 patients with thyroid tumors and only 42 of them or 16 % were diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Treatment depends on the type of thyroid cancer. Surgery is most often done, the entire thyroid gland is usually removed and if is suspected that cancer has spread to lymph nodes in the neck, these will also be removed. Radiation therapy may be done with or without surgery and it may be performed by; aiming external beam x-ray radiation at the thyroid or taking radioactive iodine by mouth. If the cancer does not respond to surgery or radiation, and has spread to other parts of the body, chemotherapy and targeted therapy are applied. The importance of screening, early diagnosis and there proper treatment possess still challenges in Albania, so better national health  programs must be developed in order to offer a better health care service to this medical problem. Keywords: Thyroid cancer, risk factors, diagnosis, treatment
  • Analysis of Agricultural Extension Services in the Development of
           Agriculture in District Naseerabad, Balochistan

    • Authors: Nadeem Ahmad
Abstract: The study examined agricultural extension services and constraints in the services faced by the farmers of the study area. The farmers indicated the weak information delivery system with less support of demonstration/visualization as weakness to the present technology transfer system. Majority of farmers received less than one visit per month by field assistant A vast majority of farmers indicated lack of money, high price of inputs referring to the price of fertilizer, seed and pesticide, and adulterated/outdated/expired inputs and non-availability of inputs as major problems faced by them while adopting new technology. Insect pest and diseases, shortage of canal irrigation were the main problems.
  • Review on the Major Challenges and Difficulties of Farm Animal Cloning

    • Authors: Tekalign Tadesse
Abstract: Developments in biotechnologywould provide many new opportunities for livestock agriculture, human medicine, and animal conservation. Nuclear cloning involves the production of animals that are genetically identical to the donor cells used in a technique known as nuclear transfer. However, at present it is an inefficient process in farm animal and small number of the embryos transferred to the reproductive tracts of recipient mother result in healthy, long-term surviving clones. Recent cloning research also reveals high failure rates, premature deaths, and dysfunctioning of internal organs.Food products from healthy clones, i.e. meat or milk, did not differ from products from healthy conventionally bred animals.  Even though the food products of cloned animals showed no differences with conventional offspring or products, throughout the world there is significant public opposition to the introduction of meat and milk from cloned animals and their progeny into the food supply. Cloning also threatens the welfare of surrogate mothers, the underlying health of the animals and the next generation, the consequential effect on food safety are critical aspects that require investigation to gain regulatory and consumer acceptance.Data on clones of farmed species for food production other than cattle and pigs have remained limited and do not allow for assessment of food safety or animal health and welfare aspects.
