  • A Review on Current Characteristics of Chicken Production System dynamics
           and Bio-security implications in Ethiopia

    • Authors: Atsbaha Hailemariam
Abstract: The objective of this review paper was to investigate the current characteristics of chicken production system dynamics and bio-security implication in Ethiopia. According to the recent literature the current number of chicken in Ethiopia are above 65.87 million of which above 95% found to be native indigenous chickens while the rest below 5% could be cited as introduced exotic chickens. Plus, previously the chicken production systems in Ethiopia were classified in to three as small, medium and large scale while recently are classified into four production dynamics as small, medium, large and integrated large commercial scale production systems. Similarly, all most all of the large commercial and integrated are established in and around Addis Ababa the capital city of the country. Based on the United Nations estimate of 2017, the current Ethiopian population reached about 103,633,804 implying that there is a huge gap between the ratios (1:0.63) of number of chickens to the human population. Besides, the currently the egg and meat consumption in the country per capital per year respectively is 57 eggs and 2kg while the demand requirement has been explained to reach on average is 180 eggs and 10.8kg per year per capital to enhance the protein gaps in the country. In Ethiopia, the native chickens are not fully scientifically characterized except some by university scholars and some agricultural research centers even most of the native indigenous chicken characterization are with the emphasis of morphological characterization even though some indigenous chickens mentioned as molecularly characterized. Alternatively, in Ethiopia, the chicken bio-security measure levels vary with the type of production systems. In larger towns and metropolis the production systems are integrated and larger commercial scale types and some legitimated bio-security practices still expected to fully practice it in the near future if wholesome chicken meat and egg are in need of beneficiaries. However; in the small scale poultry production system there is almost no/minimal chicken bio-security measures taken even though the majority of the chickens in the country are found in the small scavenging poultry production system. In the future; the suggested recommendations are clear chicken production and breeding policy, establishing of more feed processing plants, establishing of strong regulatory bodies for importation and exportation graded eggs and meat, education of stakeholders at all levels about chicken bio-security levels and production dynamics and fully characterization of the native indigenous chickens in the country. • Factors Affecting the Survival of Giraffe in Ethiopia

    • Authors: Degu Abate
Abstract: Giraffe is a social animal and a none- territorial and tend to live in a small group. In Ethiopia there are two species of giraffe; the Nubian giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardlis) and Retuculatied  giraffe ( Giraffa reticulated ) occur in southern low lands in east of Omo river including the Mago national park, Borena and Ogden  area. Giraffe populations in Ethiopia diminished over the past century in diversity, density and distribution as a result of illegal hunting, habitat degradation, civil war and unrest, Absence of a compressive land use plan, lack of comprehensive research, the impact of skin disease in giraffe population and land degradation due to overgrazing. This review discusses the different physical and biological factors that leads to the declining of giraffe population in Ethiopia. Key words: Biological factors, Ethiopia, Giraffe, Physical factors

  • High Human Exposure and Measurable Environmental Impact of Pesticides
Application on Agriculture: A Review Article

    • Authors: Geremew Liknaw Tadesse
Abstract: The adverse ecological effects occur from pesticides at all levels of biological organization. The effects can be global or local, temporary or permanent, or short-lived (acute) or long-term (chronic). The most serious effects involve loss in production, changes in growth, development and/or behavior, altered diversity or community structure, changes in system processes (such as nutrient cycling), and losses of valuable species. Pesticides can directly and indirectly impact non-target organisms like plants, bees and other pollinators, beneficial insects, fish, livestock, wildlife, humans and pollute environments like water, ground water, air and soil. The majority of pesticide have the nature of adsorbing (binding of chemicals to soil particles), persistence (ability of a pesticide to remain present and active for a long time), and volatility (the tendency of a pesticide to turn into a gas or vapor). They can be degraded by microbial action-destroying pesticide in soils, by photo degradation-using sunlight, by chemical degradation using non-living processes such as hydrolysis and by a chemical reaction with water, typically with a high pH (alkaline). Soil properties and conditions also affect the rate and type of chemical reactions of pesticides. Pesticide move by three basic medium air (vapor, particle, and spray drift), water (surface runoff, movement through soil) and deposits (residues on plants and animals). People who use pesticides or regularly come in contact with them must understand the relative toxicity, potential health effects, and preventative measures to reduce exposure to the products they use and look out special environmental considerations, groundwater protection, protect sensitive areas, and protect non-target organisms. In general the aim of this paper is to create awareness on effect of high human exposure to pesticides and measurable environmental impact of its administration on agricultures. Keywords: Pesticides, Environment, Health risk, Pest management

  • Genetic Diversity Study of Quarin Clover (T. quartinianum) Accessions of
           Ethiopia Using ISSR Markers

    • Authors: Tadesse Abate
Abstract: Genetic diversity of Trifolium quartinianum accessions from Ethiopia were studied using Inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. A total of 24 accessions, divided into three populations were used for the present study. DNA was extracted from a bulk of samples using a modified CTAB method. A total of 84 bands were amplified by the four di-nucleotid ISSR primers in the overall experimental materials. Genetic diversity was high at the species level (PPL = 100%, h = 0.29, I = 0.44). Comparison of population-based genetic diversity showed that Gojam population was the most diverse. Analysis of molecular variance (MOVA) revealed high level of within-population variation with 83.13%. This could be caused by high pollen and seed flow among-populations. Unweighted pair group method with arithmetic average (UPGMA) and Principal Coordinate (PCo) analysis showed that only accessions of T. quartinianum from Gondar formed separate cluster. The study clearly indicates the presence of variable genotypes with their unique identity that deserve conservation attention. Keywords: Genetic diversity; Ethiopia; ISSR markers; T. quartinianum

  • Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) Markers for Genetic Diversity Studies
           in Trifolium Species

    • Authors: Tadesse Abate
Abstract: Trfiolium species are economically important livestock forage and green manure crops and they can fix nitrogen through root nodulation by the bacterium Rhizobium leguminosarum. The development and utilization of molecular markers for the exploitation and identification of plant genetic diversity is one of the most key developments in the field of molecular genetics studies. Research on genetic diversity of trifolium species using molecular markers has been increasing over time for the management of germplasm and for evolving conservation strategies. DNA based markers are widely used, since their availability in potentially unlimited number and the property that they generally are not affected by developmental differences or environmental influences. This review discusses the principles of Inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) marker and its application to genetic diversity studies of different Trifolium species. Key words: Genetic diversity, ISSR markers, Trifolium
