  • “A maximum in its kind”. the problem of the absolute between Novalis
           and Kant

    • Abstract: Abstract The problem of the absolute, in its religious, political, aesthetic and/or philosophical scopes, is one of the fundamental propeller springs of 18th century thought, especially in Kant’s time and until the period of German Idealism. This paper intends to approach the problem in its philosophical-aesthetic dimension and to discern how the problem of thinking or experiencing the absolute, in the form of philosophical systematicity, as it was legated by Kant and his generation, was one of the main theoretical questions received by a whole generation of young authors. In order to best demonstrate this, we chose the example of the poet and philosopher Novalis. Our objective is, therefore, to investigate how openly, or how negatively Novalis read Kant’s proposition of the a priori and the critical edifice based upon it, and to render evident Novalis’ negation of the possibility of experiencing the absolute but in an “infinite approximation”. We also seek to suggest what could have been Kant’s reply to the objections, namely, an anthropological reply that might have shown the full reach of Kant’s conception of his critical edifice and his philosophical reflection, which might have displayed a new dimension of the reflection on the human in Kant, and thus might have partially exempted the philosopher from the reproaches of his younger readers. Finally, we want to present both Novalis’ and Kant’s (to a certain extent) surprisingly close conception of poetry as the key for the philosophical problem of the absolute.

  • The concept of ‘rationality’ in the practical sphere

    • Abstract: Abstract In this paper, I shall attempt a characterization of Smith’s concept of ‘rationality’ in the practical sphere. My goal is to show that Smith’s requirements of rationality (as inspired by Williams) cannot provide a good and workable account of what it means to be a fully rational agent. To this end, I shall examine Williams’ internalist requirement on reason and discuss the main shortcomings of such account of rationality. I shall try to show, also, that Smith’s and Williams’ views on rationality are too restrictive and thus cannot be applied to ordinary agents who deliberate in real life.

  • Conceptual and semantic representations in cognitive sciences

Abstract In this paper I will try to offer, reasons against Jackendoff's argument in which it is intended to identify conceptual and semantic representations. I will maintain that this argument is incorrect because it does not take into account the neuropsychological and psychiatric evidence against it. To do this, I will philosophically clarify what both types of representations consist of, and then, I will argue against the thesis of identification.

  • Strawson and Haack: two alternative and moderate approaches in naturalized
           epistemology

Abstract This article aims to present a characterization of the naturalized epistemology that can be understood as a theory that does not favor either traditional epistemology or scientific epistemology. That is to say, the intention is to show that it is possible to build a bridge between naturalized and traditional epistemology without having to get rid of the conceptual tools of classical epistemology (such as the notion of justification and the a priori element) and, at the same time that it is possible to examine the extent to which the former differs from the latterit or whether we should also deny such conceptual tools. In other words, the objective of this work is to show an alternative naturalized epistemology that does not get rid of the traditional tools of epistemology. Although it is important to make it clear from now on that, despite the fact that this reconciling position between traditional epistemology and naturalized epistemology is interesting, the author is not in favor of any of them, so that I could show my own point of view on this subject in an independent work. Here I will limit myself to expose and critically analyze two antecedents on the subject in recent philosophy.

  • The influence of E. Mach’s empirical criticism in the development of
           psychology

Abstract The purpose of this article is to present some elements that permit tracing the influence of Mach in the birth of three psychological approaches: Skinnerian behaviorism, Freudian psychoanalysis and Gestalt psychology. In the first place, the particular interpretation that Skinner and Freud made of some postulates of Mach’s philosophy of science are examined. The second part analyzes the influence of Mach’s work on the Gestalt psychology and the Husserlian phenomenology. Finally, the importance of having made a correct interpretation of the study plan of sensations, from an empirical and experiential point of view in the convergence between Mach’s Psychophysiology and the study of conscious experience in phenomenology, that it would have had for the emerging science of psychology, is emphasized.

  • The origin of language in the philosophy of young Nietzsche. The
assumptions of On truth and lies in a nonmoral sense

Abstract Tradition has considered language as a tool of knowledge. Nietzsche denies this and describes language in biological terms: language is caused by instinct and its primary function is the survival of the human animal who also determines his way of life according to linguistics (as the instinct determines the life of bees or ants). This paper intends to establish the presuppositions of the position about the origin of language that Nietzsche exposes in his work On Truth and Lies in a Nonmoral Sense (1873), where it is affirmed that it is impossible for the language to have any epistemological scope because of its metaphorical character.

  • The origins of the aesthetics of the quotidian. John Dewey and the notion
           of aesthetic experience

Abstract The aesthetics of the quotidian is a new research field that attempts to overcome the limited approach that had characterized modern aesthetics, recognizing the continuity between the fine arts and other aspects of life and claiming the aesthetic dimension of our daily life. The origins of this movement, which started out as a critique of institutions and enlightened theories can be traced to the pragmatism of John Dewey and his notion of aesthetic experience. The philosopher paves the way for the aesthetics of the quotidian by placing the aesthetic character in the experience rather than in objects or specific situations. This article considers the Deweyan notion of aesthetic experience, offering a new approach from which his aesthetics can be updated. For this purpose, the main qualities which define the term are analyzed, showing their potential to overcome Yuriko Saito’s criticism.

  • Reality of the evaluating fiction or fiction of the evaluating
reality' Literary and cinematographic notes for a critique of the
           evaluative reason

Abstract This paper is based on a question that crosses the limits between reality and fiction of evaluation and looks into the type of specific rationality it implies. With this idea, cinematographic and literary productions are taken as a reason for reflection that make it possible to analyze critically some dimensions of what is understood as evaluative reason. In this way, a sketch of the irreducible antagonism that divides the act of educating from the obsession of evaluating, and traces certain coordinates of struggle in the philosophical-educational field while different meanings of the desire to teach and the educational language are opened. Like going to the cinema or the theater, this paper proposes different moments in the approach of the problem: an entrance or introduction; different performances of the problem; an interval, about the certainty of evaluating and the strangeness of educating; and a curtain, as an open ending for a literary excuse.
