  • “The Last Tree”, exercising the Computational Thinking through a Graph
           Grammar based educational game

      Abstract: INTRODUCTION: This work presents an educational board game based on graph grammars to develop computational thinking skills. Graph grammars are formal languages that generalizes Chomsky’s grammars, where strings are replaced by graphs. OBJECTIVE: This game aims to explore the relations between graph grammars and computational thinking skills. It provides an alternative approach to promote computational thinking while introducing formal methods to K-12. METHOD: The game was developed under the ENgAGED process, a computer science educational games development methodology that meets design and instructional theories. The process covers analytical, conceptual, construction, application and evaluation phases. RESULTS: Four groups of students were evaluated with graph grammar tests. Two groups of students had positive results, increasing their average performances on the tests by 28% and 3%. One group kept its performance and the other group was not considered due to its lack of cooperation. CONCLUSION: This work provides “The Last Tree” as product, an instructional tool wherein the students manage a graph grammar while developing computational thinking skills. The game highlights graph grammars features such as: being visual, intuitive and yet formal languages; and high stimulation of data collection and analysis. The application and the tests showed the link between playing performance and general graph analysis and management abilities.

  • A Systematic Literature Review on relationships between Computational
           Thinking and Mathematics

      Abstract: Uma melhor compreensão das relações entre o Pensamento Computacional e disciplinas já presentes no currículo da educação básica pode contribuir para a identificação de possíveis benefícios educacionais. Dessa forma, este artigo apresenta uma Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL), incluindo 59 estudos publicados em língua inglesa entre 2006 e 2015 que apresentam atividades didáticas desenvolvendo o Pensamento Computacional e competências, habilidades ou conteúdos da Matemática. Vários tópicos matemáticos são desenvolvidos, com predominância da Álgebra, Cálculo e habilidades cognitivas de alto nível. Verifica-se ainda, nos últimos dois anos, um aumento do desenvolvimento de experiências na educação básica e um maior rigor metodológico na avaliação dos efeitos de aprendizagem. Por outro lado, se apresenta uma carência de estudos relacionados à Modelagem Matemática e à formação de professores.

  • Pensamento Computacional Desplugado: Ensino e Avaliação na Educação
           Primária Espanhola

      Abstract: O Pensamento Computacional (PC) vem gerando um novo foco educacional nas escolas mundiais como um conjunto de conhecimentos e habilidades para a solução de problemas. Entretanto, não há um consenso de metodologia de ensino e disponibilidade de material para atender às expectativas dos professores. Para verificar a eficácia de aulas de Pensamento Computacional Desplugado, foi realizada uma avaliação de estudantes da educação primária espanhola com uma abordagem Quase-Experimental no intuito de beneficiar crianças em regiões/escolas onde não há dispositivos eletrônicos, Internet e até mesmo energia elétrica. Os resultados apresentaram relevância estatística comprovando melhoria significativa no desempenho dos estudantes que tiveram atividades de PC Desplugado.

  • A Tool for Assisted Correction of Programming Exercises in Java Based in
           Computational Reflection

      Abstract: INTRODUCTION: This work reports on the creation and use of a tool to verify compliance in java programming exercises. The solution is based on the hypothesis that computational reflection can provide a way to automatically assess the programing competences of students. The work reflects the concern to make students learning a programming language have practical activities in parallel to what they learn in theoretical classes. OBJECTIVE: Attesting the effectiveness of using computational reflection to automatically correct programming exercises. Provide the teacher with a tool to support the follow-up of practical activities. Provide students with immediate feedback on their learning, so as to encourage them to behave more autonomously. METHOD: A case study was carried out with two classes of a computer sciencecourse. They answered five practical programming exercices and their responses for each activity were collected in source code format, which were used as the basis of solutions, totaling 100 responses.A comparative analysis was made between the notes obtained through CodeTeacher and the notes assigned by a group of  teachers. RESULTS: Comparing the expected notes and the actual notes, the automatic correction obtained an accuracy of 90.17%. CONCLUSION: The use of computational reflection techniques for assisted correction in programming classes can bring beneficial result. Teachers can optimize their work and have performance reports of their students. Students can also be benefited by having an immediate feedback, so they can perceive themselves capable of achieving the learning objectives defined by the teacher.

  • A Contextualized Spiral Approach for Teaching Programming in IT Vocational
           Secondary Education

      Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Brazilian vocational high school education in Computing faces problems such as course failure and dropout, plus dropout from the programs, factors that directly contribute to the deficit of such professionals. OBJECTIVE:  This paper reports an experience of a contextualized and spiral approach carried out with students of the technical program in Informatics. METHOD: The approach aims to facilitate learning and motivate students through the tools JES and PPlay, and the Python language. RESULTS: Learned lessons suggest the adequacy of Python as first language, and of contextualized activities, context reuse and challenges as factors contributing to motivation and learning. CONCLUSION: The use of contexts, languages and environments in sequential and spiral blocks fosters a more active posture of students regarding learning activities.

  • Computer Teaching Supported by Gamification

      Abstract: INTRODUÇÃO: Este artigo apresenta um relato de experiência no ensino de computação através da disciplina facultativa de robótica usando gamificação e metodologia de resolução de problemas em turmas do ensino fundamental. OBJETIVOS: Observar a influência da gamificação e do uso de situações problemas durante as aulas e comparar a capacidade de resolução de problemas com alunos que não participam da disciplina. METODOLOGIA: Considerando que a Robótica possibilita a introdução de conteúdos da Computação buscou-se desenvolver atividades em forma de situações problemas e empregou-se a gamificação que consiste em utilizar os princípios de game design à metodologia de ensino. RESULTADOS: Os resultados apresentaram melhora significativa no aprendizado do conteúdo trabalhado na disciplina, melhora significativa nas habilidades matemáticas quando comparados com alunos que não participavam das disciplinas facultativas e ampliação de habilidades sociais. CONCLUSÃO: Através da metodologia utilizada que valeu-se da gamificação e resolução de problemas no ensino de robótica foi possível constatar uma melhora significativa no desempenho das turmas. No que se refere à aprendizagem, incentivou a dedicação e a revisão das tarefas e a busca constante do conhecimento. A disciplina de robótica contribuiu efetivamente para a introdução de conteúdos da Computação. Promoveu também o engajamento entre os integrantes, a cooperação e o paralelismo das atividades.
