  • Translinguisme littéraire : Frontières, représentations et
           définitions

    • Authors: Franca Bruera
Abstract: This article aims to present a panorama of the main critical studies regarding the literary translingualism and aims to define the evolution of the development of this concept. We will track the studies evolution from Edward Said (2000), to Robert Jouanny (2000), Anne Rosine Delbart (2005) Véronique Porra (2011), ect. and stress the importance of the American studies that thanks to Steven G. Kellman (2000) introduced the definition of literary translingualism.

  • L’Écrivain atopique

    • Authors: Antonio D'Alfonso
Abstract: The author of this article presents the concepts of ‘pluriculturalism’ and ‘plurilingualism’. These notions he places against the idea that the immigrant writer inevitably assimilates and will forsake whatever language and culture he carried with him in his suitcases. This position of conscious non-assimilation will lead to what he called elsewhere Atopia, which stands at the opposite end of nationalism. The author explores what the future holds for such writers who will ultimately become all writers from Atopia.

  • Le Canada, le Chili, Haïti, le Québec… L’univers en désordre de
           “Côte-des-Nègres”

    • Authors: Marco Modenesi
Abstract: Mauricio Segura’s first novel is set in Côte-des-Neiges section of Montreal and paints a complex picture of race relations in Montreal through the violent rivalry of high school ethnic gangs. This essay points out that the novel focuses on the features of each group, Latinos and Haitians. Language, cultural heritage, identity characteristics and ways of life are all used as tight barriers, iron curtains that prevent every possibility of communication or exchange. This creates ghettos. Côte-des-Nègres underlines the failure of a transcultural process in Montreal everyday life, which is one of the main causes of deep lack of integration in a human society, which has necessarily to be a multicultural reality.

  • L’Écriture translingue comme conversion (Hector Bianciotti,
           Andreï Makine)

    • Authors: Alain Ausoni
Abstract: This article focuses on the recent rise in singularity of translingual literature, a symptom of which may be seen in Andreï Makine’s recent election to the French Academy. In his reception speech, rather than truly pay homage to Assia Djebar who preceded him, Makine chose to signal the particularity of the translingual writer’s condition. In contrast to the somewhat problematic relation to French emerging from many (post)colonial texts, which he sketches fairly schematically, Makine presents translingual writing as a privileged locus for the defence and illustration of French. What made this audacious intervention possible is, I suggest, Makine’s capacity to refashion a literary posture embodied by previous translingual writers: that of the foreign writer converted to French. Before Makine, Hector Bianciotti is certainly the translingual writer who presented most clearly his switch to writing in French as a literary conversion. Considering a key television interview and exploring Bianciotti’s French autobiographical trilogy, this article seeks to explore the formation of a literary posture of great significance to the contemporary presentation of translingual writing on the literary scene.

  • Le cas de Samuel Beckett. Une œuvre translingue :
           “Imaginez”

    • Authors: Martina Della Casa
Abstract: This paper explores how the notions of “translingualism” and “translingual imagination” (Kellman) can by applied to the understanding of Beckett’s bilingual work. To do so, the first part of the paper focuses on the interrelated issues of bilingualism and self-translation within his oeuvre and on the possible uses of the concept of “translingualism” to better define both their nature and their results. The focus is then shifted, in the second and third parts of the article, on Imagination morte imaginez and on the English version of this text, Imagination Dead Imagine. The purpose of these analyses is to explore one of Beckett’s representations of imagination and to underline, through a comparison of the different versions of this short work, its unique translingual nature.

  • Identity, Split-Self and Translingual Narrative in Jhumpa Lahiri

    • Authors: Esterino Adami
Abstract: This paper offers a preliminary investigation of the interconnection between identity, translingualism and split-self in the non-fictional production of Jhumpa Lahiri, a Bengali American author, focusing in particular on her In altre parole (2015), a text originally written in Italian. Moving across languages and cultures, Lahiri interrogates her own sense of identity by considering the nodes of tradition and transformation, in particular through her crucial translingual practice, thus shifting away from English and adopting Italian as a professional literary language. The outcome is a hybrid text that can be approached via the notion of “split self” (Emmott 2002), i.e. the plural manifestations of consciousness in its various expressive forms. The investigation will be conducted by applying an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the methodological tools and frames of postcolonial studies, narratology and cognitive poetics.

  • “Je est un autre, mais pas n'importe qui”. Norma e
sovversione in “Paris-Athènes” di Vassilis Alexakis

    • Authors: Valeria Marino
Abstract: In the contemporary French cultural field, the translingual writers are continually pressed to motivate their choice of writing in a non-native language. Extraneous bodies inside the national literature, they are forced to unceasingly justify themselves, in order to be redeemed from an implicit crime: to have been born elsewhere. In between the necessity of finding a space of expressions and the ties set up by the publishing, journalistic, critical and political system of the host country, these writers occupy an ambiguous position, which affects their literary choices. If the reception field tends to impose its own entrance laws on the foreign authors, some of them tried to go round them by staging them into their novels. My main aim is to demonstrate it, through the analysis of Vassilis Alexakis' novel Paris-Athènes.

  • “New Words Were Falling Out of Her Mouth”: lingua e identità in
formazione in “Americanah” di C. N. Adichie

    • Authors: Leonardo Nolé
Abstract: With her worldwide acclaimed novel Americanah (2013) Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie crosses the national boundaries of both Nigerian and American literatures, by focusing on the concept of identity and belonging in a transcultural context. Her books, together with the ones of an entire generation of young transnational writers, ask to develop new theoretical paradigms, in order to better understand the literary works that emerged from the contemporary “contact zones” between cultures. This paper aims to discuss in which ways Americanah contributes to this wider debate, questioning the controversial discourse on “Afropolitanism.” A close analysis of the protagonist’s concern for identity and the writer’s peculiar use of English language will show Adichie’s efforts to shape and challenge the novel form through a personal “translingual practice.”

  • “La plus sainte des amantes et la plus amante des saintes”: Teresa
d’Avila in Francia fra Ottocento e Novecento

    • Authors: Krizia Bonaudo
Abstract: The article aims to study the importance of St. Teresa and her function as a character, between fiction and hagiography, in French literature between 19th and 20th century. Her presence answers to a not edifying model, but allows a description of the saint as an example of intelligence, of love and of virtue, a marginal literary model, but constant and present in all the literary genres. The Spanish saint shows itself as a very exploitable literary model and becomes in the second part of 20th century and at the beginning of 21st century an example of an engaged women able to swing between her religious vocation and the worldliness.

  • La vocazione teatrale della scrittura di Natalia Ginzburg

    • Authors: Laura Peja
Abstract: The essay underlines the peculiar elements in the whole Ginzburg’s work that make it inherently theatrical. Even though she came to write dramas only after 1965, all Ginzburg’s writings are always voices of characters. Her novels and even essays go towards mimesis and show a specific attention to bodies and concrete display of feelings, too. The material with which her characters have to do is the same materials actors use for their work: heart and body. Recent readings of her essays and some theatrical productions from her novels seem to confirm the theatrical attitude of her works. The author then focuses on the last, brief, pièce written by Ginzburg, Il cormorano, which is also her last creative piece of writing, and is emblematic of her way of looking at the world and life, with a feminine concreteness and an ethic call for responsibility.

  • Il “linguaggio visivo” di Artaud. Genealogie e intrecci

    • Authors: Vanessa Pietrantonio
According to the most recent methods pertaining to “Visual Studies”, the text aims at analyzing the concept of “Visual language” elaborated by Artaud in some of his fundamental interventions gathered in The theatre and its double, that was subsequently reproposed during the whole of his opera. This concept not only puts him in a profound antagonistic role with the most common and diffused theatrical practice of the time, but it adventures him beyond a theater space intended in the most radical and experimental sense, instead, it draws him closer to the figurative arts through a twist of extremely original and problematic visual and verbal languages. The essay Artaud dedicated to Van Gogh a year before his death without doubt establishes the apex of this intellectual parable. It is about a path, through Artaud’s both direct and indirect mediation, whose ramification reaches out to the most significant artistic experiences of the second half of the Twentieth Century, as shown in a triptych by Francis Brown inspired to a recurring character in a poem by Eliot.

  • “Da una modernità all’altra”. Sull’ultimo
           libro di Sandra Teroni

    • Authors: Luigi Marfè
Abstract: A review of Sandra Teroni’s last book (Da una modernità all’altra. Tra Baudelaire e Sartre. Marsilio, Venezia: 2017), this article focuses on the critical debate on the notions of “modernity” and “modernism”, in particular in French culture. The theme of the “modern” is pervasive in the works by authors such as Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, Stéphane Mallarmé, Blaise Cendrars, Paul Morand, Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Henri Michaux, André Malraux, Jean-Paul Sartre. These writers expressed their breakage of the tradition very differently, but they all insisted upon a common question: what does the notion of subjectivity mean in the modern society'
