Abstract: One of the most complicated problems faced by muslim community shortly after the death of prophet Muhammad PBUH was who to be elected as the khalifah after him. Abu Bakr was appointed finally as khalifah after Muhammad PBUH. But the Shi‘ites persist in arguing that Ali is the most eligible persons to be khalifah.Shaykh Muhammad Mar‘i is one among the Shi‘ites who defend the claim of Ali’s eligibility to be khalifah in his seminal work, Limādhā Ikhtartu Madhhab al-Shī‘ah. His arguments are based on the interpretation of āyat al-tablīghin Surah al-Mā’idah as well as the hadith of Ghadīr Khum. This article is an attempt to appraise critically those arguments according to the rules of Qur’anic exegesis and the principles of hadits evaluation proposed by scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah. Based on these critical appraisal, the study reveals that his interpretation of āyat al-tablīgh  is simply inaccurate. There is clearly no indication in āyat al-tablīghof Ali’s eligibility to be khalifah after the death of Muhammad PBUH. Moreover, the study also proves that the hadits of Ghadīr Khum is too weak to be used as the basis for the above-mentioned claim of the Shi‘ite.

Abstract: Globalisation is a challenge for Muslim world as it can be opportunities. The term globalisation mostly refers to the opening up the market to transnational corporations (TNCs) which is in line with liberalisation of the economy. Ironically those who call for “opening up of borders” or “capital liberalisation” are actually the one who are so strict in the immigration policies and practices. Protecting their own labour market, while encouraging their own TNCs to optimise their presence in the developing countries is a blatant contradiction. The calamitous effects of neoliberal globalisation are striking crucial aspects of life, such as economic justice, environmental condition, and educational system. Therefore, critical response to globalisation is imperative. In many ways, the readiness to discuss critically on globalisation is very much to be welcomed. This paper points to the need to discuss beyond the preoccupation of economic needs. It proposes to create and project another kind of globalisation which points to a humanised global integration. The real opportunity is when we are able to see the problems of humankind as a whole. Muslim must be at the forefront in forging human solidarity and cooperation so as to attain a humanised global order.

Abstract: Al-Qur’an contains many valuable pointers on educational matters. Surah Luqmān, the 31st surah in al-Qur’an, is one of several important repositories of those pointers. This article tries to scrutinize the concept of Excellent Education in Surah Luqmān by focusing on two main points, namely the aim of education and the curriculum of childhood education. The study reveals that excellent education in al-Qur’an directs people to know their selves well and to perform their true functions in life. The concept of excellent education in al-Qur’an is formulated in an integrated and all-inclusive curriculum aiming at refinement of all potentials of human intteligence, namely spiritual intteligence, emotional intelligence, and cognitive-rational intelligence. This curriculum emphasizes five central matters in human life, namely tauhid, acts of worship, ethic, mentality, and management of life. When the children are well educated on these five central matters, they will totally improve in order to find happiness in this wordly life and in the hereafter.

Abstract: As the most important medium of developing civilization, Islamic University should be able to reflect on human figure which reflects the nature of God. The human being is the center of civilization. Human figure who could build the civilized human civilization is the figure who reflects the nature of God. This man is known by term insan kamil. Fundamentally, the structure and curriculum of Islamic University should be taken from the nature of man which consists permanent and spiritual dimension as well as material and emotional dimension. Then in practical level, research activities in the educational activities should involve various methods, such as religious and scientific, empirical and rational, deductive and inductive, subjective and objective, without making one method is more dominant than the other. Because of the University’s curriculum-based involve all ‘civilized human beings’ potential in a whole organ intact and holistic, then it is called tauhidi curriculum. In short, the Islamic University is a reflection of the insan kamil or universal human being (al-insān al-kullīor al-insān al-kāmil), which is directed to form a human figure perfectly and completely.

Abstract: Insan kamil (the perfect human) is the most ideal concept in achieving the best quality of human being in all its dimensions. The extent of media influence on the knowledge, attitude, mental, and spiritual quality of human being is not something that needs to be debated again. Television with its capacity has the same great potential as a driving force or a barrier at the same time for the development of human quality. A growing phenomenon about the content of television in Indonesia is increasingly revealing the colors of mourning in its massive dissemination. The composition of the broadcast is full with entertainment which is ranging from the telenovela, infotainment, reality show, charity show, comedy, crime to other news are very far from the role of educating. Thus, where are broadcasting program rules that must contain 70% of the educative elements' Even an impressed classy broadcasting program such as talk show which is hosted by an “educated person” have not been off completely from the framing of the media. This paper seeks to offer a media literacy concept in response to these problems. Media literacy is an ability to access, understand, analyze, evaluate, and producing media information in a variety of contexts. This is intended so that the community can afford to be critical and creative, not merely subject to exploitation by the media but make them explore and have media skilled.
