  • The Nietzschean theory of will

The article intends to make explicit how Nietzsche, on the basis of an examination of the wanting phenomenology, composes an argument for his revisionist thesis that our wanting experience does not trace a real causal relation with our acts, the result of this being the breakdown of very ideia of moral responsibility in the direction requried by incompatibilists theories of will. An important premise of Nietzsche’s argument depends on a Theory of Types, according to which all our conscious thinkings have an epiphenomenical statute regarding unconscious psychology and agent’s physiology, which in turn traces to psychophysical types to which every individual must be linked. Finally it attempts to show that Nietzschean theory of will anticipates some results of contemporary empirical psychology.

  • Immoralism – a Nietzschean ethics'

This article discusses some attempts of reconstructing the “positive” counterpart of Nietzsche’s critique of morality, that is, attempts of answering the question of what would be a properly Nietzschean ethics or normativity, which is supposed to ground his attacks on morals. Such reconstructions have attributed different normative commitments to Nietzsche, so that his positive views on ethics might be described either as a form of aestheticism or as a heterodox version of utilitarianism or even as a variety of virtue ethics. We point out some features of the Nietzschean philosophy that seem to be relevant though not consonant with such reconstructions, points related to his conceptions of perspectivism, egoism, freedom and Rausch as well as his self-proclaimed “immoralism”, in order to assess the appropriateness of such reconstructions to capture Nietzsche’s positive views on ethics and practical normativity.

  • Nietzsche on Helvétius: “The last great event in morals”

This paper aims to examine the few mentions to Helvetius in Nietzsche's work, with the more specific purpose of making sense of Nietzsche's assertion that the French thinker would be at the head of "the last great event of morality". The hypothesis to be defended is that Helvetius has importance both positively - as a proponent of a more realistic model of analysis of moral phenomena - and negatively - as the precursor of the most recent unfolding of herd morality.

  • Nietzsche and perfeccionist orientations of his attempt to estimate values

The text examines how Nietzsche conflates the critical element of his philosophy with the constructive ethical formulations that he advocates. His aim is to show that Nietzsche's positive formulations retain a kind of normative guidance, even though in a minimal sense. Given that this supposed normative guidance must maintain coherence with his critique - and therefore must be distinct of the traditional conceptions which are criticized -, I start by identifying some elementary commitment that the philosopher assumes at the time of his critique in order to clarify the nature and the status of the conception of normativity that these commitments admits. Thereby I arrive at a description where although any evaluative judgment rests on a basic subjective element, this element is enough to ensure his normative force. At the end of text, I suggest one possible characterization of Nietzsche's position as a variation of perfectionism where a formal description of values that are defined regarding his capacity of promoting excellence is conjugated with a requisition of a particular type of self-reliance, whose function is to grant normative force to these values.

  • Philosophy as a way of life: confronting modern Skepticism

The aim of this paper is to show that the way in which Pascal reacts to Montaigne’s attempt of recovering the ancient conception of philosophy as a way of life by reworking certain elements he borrowed from the sceptical tradition will have considerable impact on the similar philosophical project Nietzsche tries to develop in his so-called middle period works (section III of this paper). Nietzsche’s starting point is the diagnosis that the crisis of Christianity in early Modern Europe did not make room for the development of a contemplative life emancipated from religious illusions. Instead of that, it was followed by the degradation, not to say the complete suppression of contemplative life and the immersion in modern activism (see CS 359, BGE 58). The trilogy Nietzsche dedicated to the Free Spirits is an attempt of directly counteracting this tendency and regaining a non-religious sense of contemplative life in the most unlikely context of the bourgeois society of the second half of the Nineteenth Century. I intend to show that by the time of publishing Daybreak, Pascal becomes his most stimulating opponent. Before doing it, I reconstruct the way Montaigne receives and transforms the heritage of ancient scepticism (section I) and, thereafter, I proceed to investigate how Pascal reacts to the revival of ancient scepticism, putting special emphasis on the way he tries to undermine the ideal of a contemplative life freed from the tutelage of Christianity, a philosophical project which had in Montagne its most consequent representative (section II).

  • Nietzsche’s contribution to ethics

The article intends to show that the scope of Nietzsche’s criticism to morality, his self-proclaimed immoralism, does not embrace the totality of our ethical experience, but a particular interpretation of it, arising from an historical construct whose main stages are object of a genealogical narrative of a naturalist orientation. Clark briefly take up the assumption, supported by her at other times, that Nietzsche´s position does not rule out the legitimacy of any ethical category, nor recommends the abolition of any rule to the direction of our interpersonal relations and its internalization in the form of dispositions that bring stability.

  • Nietzsche, perfectionism and democracy: tensions between Rawls, Cavell and
           the agonists

At the center of his political thinking, Nietzsche encourages the quest for the perfection of individuals. It is the dispute for the meaning of perfectionism of Nietzsche's thought by different currents the purpose of this article. Rawls reads a Nietzschean perfectionism that is elitist, anti-egalitarian, and bound up with aristocratic regimes. This was a prevalent reading of the thinker. But in the last 25 years, other interpretations have emerged for the quest for Nietzschean perfection. One defends a moral perfectionism in the author's thought, which would be egalitarian and compatible with the democratic environment. Another, more recent, argues for an agonistic perfectionism, aiming at the perpetual struggle to overcome itself as fundamental to the democratic environment.

  • Nietzsche’s reception from the Library Index of the Central Seminary
           of São Leopoldo/RS

The Index of library of Central Seminary of Imaculate Conception in São Leopoldo, at Rio Grande do Sul kept a big part of philosophical work that, in the years before the Vatican II Concilian, it was greatly in suspicious. Within it shows up all the Nietzsche’s work, which this text deals with. However paradoxical that it can be, Nietzsche, despite controversial manner whereby treats about themes as the culture, the moral, the Christianity, Nietzsche met, in the Central Seminary many readers. These, attracted by the beauty of its stile and by the impetuous manner whereby with witch he faced the problems of his time, took the Nietzsche’s thought, largely, seriously. It can be infer the hypothesis of that Nietzsche’s thought reception in the Central Seminary setting up, somehow, as tool to think the future destiny of institutional Church.

  • Projectionism of values in Nietzsche

The aim of this paper is to claim Nietzsche’s place within the philosophical tradition of projectivism. Indeed, as will be shown, although Nietzsche is almost unanimously ignored by scholars working on projectivism, during the whole development of his philosophical thought, he holds a position which can be reasonably defined as “projectivist”.
