  • MACINTYRE, RAWLS AND CAVELL ON GAMES, RULES AND PRACTICES

    • Authors: Rastislav Dinić
      Pages: 077 - 088
Abstract: John Rawls and Alasdair Macintyre are usually portrayed as opponents in the liberal-communitarian debate. However, Stanley Cavell’s critique of Rawls’ early paper “Two Concepts of Rules”, helps us recognize a similarity between their accounts of rules, games and practices and the role that these play in moral life. This paper shows that both authors pay insufficient attention to personal relationships, the flexibility of our moral life, and the need to take responsibility for our moral positions. A scene from Thomas Hardy’s “Jude the Obscure” is used to show how this presents a serious problem for Macintyre’s model of tradition-based moral reasoning.

  • ANTINOMIES OF RESEARCH METHODS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES: METHODENSTREIT

    • Authors: Jelena Božilovć
      Pages: 089 - 101
Abstract: The central issue of this paper is the so-called dispute over methods (Methodenstreit), which is based on the essential difference between natural and social phenomena. Methodological problems in sociology are related to the determination of its subject matter, and the history of the science has showed that these problems have represented the main point of disagreement between theoreticians. The debates on the issues of natural and social phenomena and, thus related, manners of their examination, began as early as in the times of ancient philosophy – starting with Aristotle, and continued through the so-called Galilean tradition that would find its peak in the positivist movement and the historistic school as its opposition. The paper draws attention to the theoretical-methodological positions of both sides in this dispute, the reaffirmation of hermeneutics, as well as the ideological background. Furthermore, certain opinions that formed through the integration of these two methodological approaches are also discussed here. The time of the Methodenstreit is the time when sociology was constituted, thus the concluding remarks emphasize the importance of this dispute for the constitution of sociology as a science, with a particular reflection on the influence of historism on German sociologists.

  • INTERNET USAGE BY THE ELDERLY IN SERBIA

    • Authors: Gordana Stojić
      Pages: 103 - 115
Abstract: In the last decades, the problems of the elderly have attracted the attention of the scientific and wider public, thus imposing themselves as issues of public policies. The growth of interest in the elderly is conditioned by: the increasing share of the elderly in the overall population, the change of their social status as well as the development of new conceptual frames (social exclusion, marginalization, ageism). Today the elderly live in a society which is characterized by the expansion of information-communication technologies (ICT). The Internet is a means of more efficient and faster completion of various activities, satisfaction of different needs and access to social resources. On the other hand, the adoption of new technologies has taken on a different pace when it comes to the generation affiliation. That is why it is important to examine the degree to which older citizens successfully use these opportunities. The subject matter of the paper is Internet usage by the elderly. It points to the benefits the elderly are getting from Internet usage as well as the barriers they come across. Starting from the concept of the digital divide, Internet usage by the older Serbian population is analyzed. Finally, the measures to be taken to create favorable conditions for Internet usage by elderly are pointed out.

  • MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY: DIGITAL OPTIMISTS AND DIGITAL PESSIMISTS

    • Authors: Anka Mihajlov Prokopovic
      Pages: 117 - 127
Abstract: This work examines the relationship between mass media and digital technology by following McChesney’s argument (2013) that the division on the technological optimists and technological pessimists is gaining in significance again. The debate between these two currents, which has been ongoing since the beginning of the Internet with variable intensity, has enabled many advantages and many disadvantages brought by the digital age is discussed in its “pure form''. The work is conceptualization of the following themes: the nature of the mass media, the characteristics of digital life, citizens' participation in the creation of content on digital platforms and the future of journalism, as they are seen by these two theoretical approaches.

  • RELATION BETWEEN THE QUALITY OF FAMILY RELATIONS OF STUDENTS AND SELECTED
           FIELD OF STUDY

    • Authors: Milica Tosic Radev, Dušan Todorović
      Pages: 129 - 137
Abstract: Early experience, forms of behaviour that parents expressed towards a child and the family environment in which a child grew up have a significant effect on the formulation of attitudes, needs and interests that later on influence professional orientation and the choice of occupation (Roe, 1956).The research was conducted on a sample of 448 students from 6 different faculties and attempt to examine the possible connection between the quality of family relationships of the student and  his/her professional interests, evaluated through education type, i.e. through selection of the field of study.  The quality of family relationships were operationalized by the Family quality of interactions scale - KOBI (Vulić - Prtorić, 2004).The results indicated differences in the expression of family dimensions between students of different faculties. The students of detached, technical sciences have a weaker feeling of having their mother’s acceptance, while the individuals from the group of students with the strongest feeling of rejection from both parents choose the field of psychology for their studies. Our results indicate the existence of differences between the subsamples of students in their experience of the family that go beyond gender differences, and suggest the need for further, more detailed research which could discover deeper, inner initiators that guide an individual’s choice of profession.

  • NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY INVENTORY – POSSIBILITY OF APPLICATION ON A
           SERBIAN POPULATION

    • Authors: Milica Ristić, Vladimir Hedrih, Snežana Stojiljković
      Pages: 139 - 149
Abstract: The main goal of this research was to investigate some of the psychometric properties of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory – reliability, applicability of a seven-factor structure and its construct validity for a sample of the Serbian population. For this purpose, a 40-item Narcissistic Personality Inventory – NPI and Rosenberg’s Global Self-esteem scale were distributed via internet to 150 participants of both sexes, aged 19 – 56. Investigation of internal consistency of NPI was satisfactory – Cronbach alpha coefficient was 0.87. Also, the seven-factor structure of NPI found with the American sample did not correspond well to the factor structure found in the present study. The total scale score correlated with self-esteem, thereby supporting the validity of the scale.

  • FAMILY FUNCTIONING AND SELF-SILENCING OF STUDENTS

    • Authors: Ivana Janković, Jelisaveta Todorović, Violeta Arnaudova
      Pages: 151 - 161
Abstract: Starting from the main hypothesis of the Circumplex Model that the balanced levels of cohesion and flexibility are the most appropriate for family functioning, and that unbalanced levels of cohesion and flexibility are related to problematic family functioning, in this paper we wanted to investigate in what way these dimensions of family functioning are related to self-silencing. In this model, cohesion is defined as an emotional relationship between family members, and flexibility is defined as a quality and expression of leadership and organization. Self-silencing is related to the cognitive schema of creating and maintaining intimate relations in a way that a person is passive, that he/she suppresses his/her feelings, opinion and actions in order to satisfy the needs of people close to them. The research was conducted on a sample of 250 Serbian and Macedonian students. The following instruments were used in this research: Silencing the Self Scale and FACES IV, which consists of three scales that measure Cohesion (Disengaged, Balanced Cohesion and Enmeshed), three scales that measure Flexibility (Rigid, Balanced Flexibility and Chaotic), Scale for the Assessment of Family Communication, which is defined as the skill of positive communication and it is considered to be a mitigating dimension and it helps families change their levels of cohesion and flexibility, and the Scale for the Assessment of Family Satisfaction.Self-silencing is in a positive correlation with unbalanced levels of cohesion, with disengaged family relations (r=.195, p=.002) and with enmeshed (entangled) family relations (r=.332, p=.000). Self-silencing is in a positive correlation with Unbalanced levels of flexibility, with rigid (r=.243, p=.000) and chaotic family relations (r=.217, p=.001).Balanced Cohesion, as the indicator of healthy family functioning, is related to a lower level of self-silencing of family members, that is, in such families the members can openly speak about their needs, feelings and opinions without fear that it would jeopardize the needs of other family members. The members of families with a very low or very high cohesion and flexibility conceal their needs and desires in order to satisfy the needs of other members.

  • CONTEMPORARY HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY FROM A CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE

    • Authors: Ljubiša Zlatanović
      Pages: 163 - 174
Abstract: Although there is a diversity of scientific trends and tendencies within health psychology, it could be said that this discipline of psychology consists of two main and clearly different approaches: the dominant approach of traditional (“mainstream”) health psychology and the recently developed but growing approach of “critical” health psychology. In line with this contention, in the focus of attention of this article are the current state and the newer critical trends in theory, research and practice of contemporary health psychology. The main aims of the article are the following: (1) to present the key points of difference between these two distinct approaches to health psychology, emphasizing the central conceptual and methodological developments within critical health psychology; (2) to indicate the reasons for critical rethinking existing health psychology; and (3) to suggest that critical alternative approaches are an important contribution to the further development of contemporary health psychology as an academic discipline.
