  • The Communication of Vincentian Culture: Reflections on the Impact of the
Vincentian Heritage Tour on Faculty and Staff Participants at DePaul
           University

    • Authors: Donald R. Martin Ph.D. et al.
Abstract: Beginning with a literature review, the authors of this study define organizational and institutional culture and stress the importance of communicating Vincentian culture and ideology to DePaul University’s faculty and staff. The specific goals of the Vincentian Heritage Tour (VHT) are summarized. During the VHT, participants visit Vincentian sites and learn about them as they follow in the footsteps of Vincent de Paul. The study assesses the effectiveness of the VHT in deepening participants’ understanding of Vincentian values and ideology. It also examines how participants apply this understanding to their work at DePaul. The study’s methodology and its quantitative and qualitative findings are discussed. Tables presenting the results are included.

  • “What Must Be Done'”: Vincentian Teacher Preparation in
           the 21st Century"

    • Authors: Christopher Worthman Ph.D.
Abstract: Christopher Worthman explores the defining characteristics of pre-K through 12th grade Vincentian teacher preparation and how it can ready teachers, regardless of their faith, to teach all student populations in all schools. He explains how the American preoccupation with accountability and standardization in schools is a social justice issue. To discern principles of Vincentian preparation, he uses the work of modern Vincentian scholars and draws on examples from the educational efforts of Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac, Marguerite Naseau, Frederic Ozanam, and Elizabeth Seton. Worthman identifies three principles: Lucan spirituality, a sense of immediacy, and affective and effective action. Lucan spirituality goes by many names in many faiths. It encourages pre-service teachers to reflect on how their experiences and values affect their relationships with students, parents, and colleagues and vice versa. A sense of immediacy refers to the necessity of addressing students’ greatest needs and assessing how well they are met. Affective and effective action arises from pre-service teachers’ convictions about who they are as educators and how they should teach. It serves “the whole individual and society writ large.” Suggestions for instilling these principles in pre-service teachers are described.

  • The Virtue of Holy Indifference: The Fruit of Saint Vincent de
           Paul’s Spiritual Journey

    • Authors: Sung Hae Kim S.C.
Abstract: To update her article on indifference from Vincentian Heritage 30:2, Sung Hae Kim uses Vincent de Paul’s letters and conferences to understand his conception of indifference. For him, it was the basis for all the virtues he wanted the Congregation and the Daughters of Charity to cultivate. It meant a complete abandonment of one’s own will in favor of complete openness to God’s will. Vincent believed that this openness led to a state of perfect freedom and happiness. Indifference allowed people to free themselves from their own desires and attachments and helped them to “love all things from the eyes of God.” It enabled trust in God, and as such, was the ideal for all of Jesus’s disciples. Examples are given from Vincent’s life in which he displayed indifference. Because Ignatius Loyola introduced the concept of indifference to Catholicism, his view of it is also discussed and compared with Vincent’s. For Ignatius, indifference was essential to decision making; it meant discerning God’s will and being ready to act in accordance. For Vincent, indifference was essential to action itself, necessary for the obedient, faithful acceptance and execution of ministries.

  • Vincent de Paul’s World of Animals

    • Authors: John E. Rybolt
Abstract: Vincent de Paul’s texts contain over 650 direct or indirect references to more than 100 animals. These include domesticated animals—especially horses, sheep, cattle, and swine—as well as wild animals: birds, invertebrates, aquatic animals, wolves, and even mythical creatures. Sometimes the references are within the context of animals’ role in the lives of the Congregation, the Daughters, or the poor. More often, animals are used either positively or negatively to explain correct behavior in community life, proper spiritual aspirations, or the ideal (obedient) relationship of humanity to God. Often taken from his own observations, Vincent’s animal citations demonstrate his awareness of and respect for the natural world. In the past and today, they also draw in his audiences and make them more attentive to the lessons he imparts.

  • Emergent Catholicity: Forming the Mind of Vincent

    • Authors: Scott Kelley Ph.D.
Abstract: Vincent de Paul has been perceived as anti-intellectual for reasons that are discussed in this article, but his two degrees, especially the one from the University of Toulouse, profoundly influenced his thinking. His education developed his logic, making him “a formidable theologian,” an excellent organizer, and an effective advocate for poor persons. The article traces the medieval university’s influence on Vincent’s university experience. Logic’s importance in the theology curriculum and the way it was taught are described. Since Vincent’s degree allowed him to teach from the seminal Book II of Peter Lombard’s Sentences, Lombard’s writings are contextualized within those of two other scholastic thinkers, Peter Abelard and Thomas Aquinas. Scholasticism examined disparate perspectives with the goal of integrating them into a whole truth. This was a step toward understanding complete truth of God. Vincent’s application of the scholastic method is illustrated with issues he faced in his work and with his response to Jansenism. His education gave him “a comprehensive understanding of Catholic theology, the capacity to engage viewpoints different from his own, and the . . . intellectual mastery required to articulate sophisticated concepts in ways that were understandable to people who did not have his educational background.”

  • Daughters of Charity Recall the 1871 Chicago Fire: 'It traveled like
           lightning.'

    • Authors: Betty Ann McNeil D.C.
Abstract: Accounts of the Chicago Fire are presented here from two Daughters of Charity who witnessed it, Sister Angeline Carrigan and Sister Walburga Gehring. At the time of the fire, the Daughters had three schools, a mission for social services, an existing hospital, and another hospital under construction in the city. They lost a school and the social services mission (of which Sister Carrigan was sister servant) in the disaster. After the fire, they cared for poor persons of the burned districts in their hospital and in the hospital established by the city’s Relief Committee. Sister Gehring was in charge of the latter and of the Daughters’ hospital that was underway, St. Joseph’s. She gives an extensive history of St. Joseph’s origins and construction.

  • Slavery on the Frontier: The Report of a French Missionary on
           Mid-Seventeenth-Century Tunis

    • Authors: Alison Forrestal Ph.D. et al.
Abstract: This document is a report sent in 1654 by Jean Le Vacher, member of the Congregation of the Mission, vicar apostolic of the Holy See and acting French consul in Tunis, to the cardinals of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, in Rome. It describes his missionary work in and around Tunis. Le Vacher’s letter focuses on the life and conditions of the Christian slaves (mostly Catholic, but Protestant too) in the region and on his efforts to provide spiritual and material assistance to them. It offers insights into early modern slavery in North Africa, the efforts of the Catholic Church to strengthen its presence in the area, and the culture and organization of societies on the border between Islam and Christianity. This presentation includes the full text of Le Vacher’s report in an English translation, followed by the original Italian, with an introduction, commentary, and editorial notes.

  • Vincent de Paul and the Galleys of France

    • Authors: John E. Rybolt C.M; Ph.D.
Abstract: For decades, Vincent de Paul was the Royal Chaplain of the Galleys and sought to improve the living and working conditions of criminals condemned to galley service. He provided better housing for those awaiting their service, and both the Daughters of Charity and the Vincentians ministered to rowers’ physical and spiritual needs. Vincentians also managed a large hospital for convicts. The galleys’ function, the brutal journey to them, and the convicts’ life at sea and ashore are described. The possibility of Vincent having once substituted for a convict is discussed, as is Vincent’s view of the galley service system.
