  • Her Body, Herland: Reproductive Health and Dis/topian Satire in Charlotte
           Perkins Gilman
    • Abstract: Scientific sex education was a common approach among social hygiene—or sex education—reformers in the United States. This “scientific” approach adopted a comparative biology foundation for young adult sex education as a means of evading Comstockian censorship, since talking about nonhuman biology was not considered as “obscene” as human anatomy.1 Popular fin de siècle feminist writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman offers insight into early approaches to sex education theory and the implications of its comparative biology method for young women. Gilman’s Herland (1915), in particular, rescripts scientific sex education theory by offering a feminist approach that challenges biological determinism in fin de siècle ... Read More

  • Physiology Is Destiny: The Fate of Eugenic Utopia in the Fiction of H. P.
           Lovecraft and Olaf Stapledon
    • Abstract: American weird fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft and British science fiction writer Olaf Stapledon are antithetical in many ways, from their educational experiences to their politics, yet both imagined alien societies as utopias whose order, stability, and destiny are predicated on the eugenically altered physiologies of their citizens. While Stapledon’s focus on eugenics as a key means for achieving planetary (and ultimately universal) utopia during the interwar period is well known, Lovecraft’s worldview is generally understood to be dysgenic and dystopian in its obsession with perceived threats of racial degeneration and cultural decadence. Nevertheless, Lovecraft’s most extensive and sympathetic depiction of an ... Read More

  • Building a Bridge to Nowhere: Morris, the Education of Desire, and the
           Party of Utopia
    • Abstract: If you are planning a trip to utopia, I recommend avoiding the example of William Guest. For, on the first morning of his utopian holiday, the protagonist of William Morris’s News from Nowhere (1890) nearly drowns. As he enjoys a swim in the Thames, Guest momentarily loses his orientation: “My eyes naturally sought for the bridge, and so utterly astonished was I by what I saw, that I forgot to strike out, and went spluttering under water again.”1 Instead of the “ugly suspension bridge” (CW 16:4) he anticipates, Guest sees a cause for wonder:I had perhaps dreamed of such a bridge, but never seen such an one out of an illuminated manuscript; for not even the Ponte Vecchio at Florence came anywhere near it. It was of ... Read More

  • “Glocalized” Utopia, Community-Building, and the Limits of
           Imagination
    • Abstract: Can communitarians still dream' This article examines what happens when intentional communities break from lingering associations with socialism in favor of supposedly more savvy or self-conscious forms of utopianism. In an effort to rehabilitate utopianism and reorient it away from defining it as static and subject to the paradox of multiple, conflicting “goods,” some scholars propose that a postsocialist utopianism be imagined as processual, conflictual, “everyday,” or “critical.”1 This is against the view that the collapse of so-called programmatic utopias, such as twentieth-century state experiments with European and Soviet socialism, signaled the end of utopia. Programmatic utopianism is overarching ... Read More

  • Machiavelli’s Two Utopias
    • Abstract: The field of contemporary utopian studies has long attempted to refute the view of the concept of utopia promulgated by certain of its critics who see in the utopian image a conceptual prefiguration of the political end of the totalitarian project.1 The utopian society is identified by these critics as one internally identical with itself, a society in which temporality and difference have been abolished through the integration of all its constituent parts in a harmonious whole whose fixity is reproduced through time. Utopia as a whole, in other words, is reduced to utopia as a systematic blueprint. In rejecting such a reduction, utopian theorists typically distinguish between systematizing utopias and critical ... Read More

  • Utopies des Lumières ed. by Antoine Hatzenberger (review)
    • Abstract: The cover art for Utopies des Lumières is quite simple but very effective, just like the texts that the collection contains. The cover is mostly plain, but it includes a fragment of Thomas More’s map of the island of Utopia. Inside, six chapters of varying length and interest are divided into three parts dealing mostly with three questions that are also integral to the concerns of the genre of utopia as defined by More: Where is utopia' What does utopia bring' What can it accomplish'Indeed, part 1 consists of a discussion of the geographic question of utopia captivatingly prompted by the chapters by Peter Fitting (21–33) and Kate Turner (35–49). Both chapters reinforce the role of imagination, but while Fitting’s ... Read More

  • Mellan fykt och förändring—Utopiskt platsskapande i 1970-talets
alternativa miljö by Kristoffer Ekberg (review)
    • Abstract: In comparison with the buoyantly optimistic 1960s, the 1970s are often characterized as a pessimistic decade. The great hopes and ambitious ideas envisioned by the 1960s generation were replaced by a sense of doom and disappointment in modern society, with its unequal distribution of resources, environmental problems, and the threat of nuclear war.1 Among political radicals, the spontaneous movements of the 1960s grew into more organized and dogmatic forms of leftist political activity. However, as Blake Slonecker has argued, a utopian impulse, reaching from the late 1960s to the communal living experiments of the 1970s, can be traced in the American counterculture movement.2 Many of the experiments of the 1960s ...
