  • Accelerating corrosion in a laboratory set-up for corrosion-fatigue of
           offshore steels

      Abstract: Corrosion-fatigue is a dangerous failure mechanism that is not yet fully understood. Structures subjected to corrosion-fatigue are over conservative in design, which is economically unfavourable. To counter this, representative laboratory experiments simulating the corrosion-fatigue conditions of an offshore structure should be performed. Lab testing is, for obvious reasons, performed at frequencies much higher than these of wave and wind actions. However, this means that corrosion needs to be accelerated in the same manner. In this work two different ways to accelerate corrosion were selected, namely temperature and oxygen content adaptation. S-N curves were determined in different test conditions in order to evaluate the damage evolution. It has been found that high temperatures and high levels of oxygen content will result in earlier failure. The fracture surfaces are somewhat different than fracture surfaces obtained due to fatigue in air. More crack initiation sites can be observed and the fracture surface is generally rougher due to corrosion.

  • Online fatigue crack growth monitoring with clip gauge and direct current
           potential drop

      Abstract: Fatigue is a well-known failure phenomenon which has been and still is extensively studied. Often structures are designed according to the safe-life principle so no crack initiation occurs. Nowadays there is a high emphasis on cost-efficiency, and one might rather opt for a fail-safe design. Therefore a certain amount of crack growth can be allowed in structures, but then a good knowledge of stresses and related crack growth rates is needed. To this end, extensive studies are done to obtain a material’s Paris law curve. Within the framework of research for offshore wind turbine constructions, tests were done to determine the crack growth rate of a high strength low alloy (HSLA) steel. A dedicated LabVIEW program was developed to be able to determine an entire Paris law curve with a single specimen, by controlling the stress intensity factor range (ΔK). The program is controlled by the readings of a clip gauge, which make it possible to plan the amount of crack growth per ΔK block and thus plan an entire test in advance. The potential drop technique was also applied in order to obtain the Paris law curve. Clip gauge results were compared with direct current potential drop monitoring. This comparison was done by means of an a/W-N diagram and the resulting Paris law curves. The results show a very good correlation between both methods and with the visual confirmation.

  • Hydrostatic pressure device for evaluation of contact pressure sensor
           characteristics

      Abstract: In order to gain more insight in the characteristics of Tekscan contact pressure mapping sensors, a hydrostatic pressure cell is designed. The main research topics are load history dependency, inter-pixel output variation and output drift behaviour of the sensors. This leads to a state of the art preconditioning and post processing method which yields a higher accuracy of the measurement data.

  • Evaluation of a finite element model for SENT testing of welded
           connections

      Abstract: The SENT test has recently gained popularity for the characterization of the ductile tearing resistance of welded connections under low crack tip constraint. In addition to this practical purpose, Soete Laboratory adopts the SENT test as a tool to investigate effects of weld strength heterogeneity on the crack driving force response of weld defects. The numerical aspect of this investigation relies on a finite element model of a SENT specimen in which the heterogeneous strength properties of the weld region are defined on the basis of an imported hardness map. This paper evaluates the model in two respects. First, crack driving force response is validated on the basis of an experimental SENT test result of a non-welded specimen. Second, the potential effect of the transfer function between hardness and constitutive properties is illustrated. It is concluded that more work is required to improve the feasibility of weld hardness data as a means to characterize effects of weld strength heterogeneity.

  • Registration process for real-time evaluation in biomedical application

      Abstract: The study of knee kinematics is used to analyse joint disorders, design of prosthetic devices, impact of surgical treatments and in general the study of the locomotion. In order to allow researchers to immediately visualise and interpret the influence of certain changes during tests and between different test setups, a testing procedure that allows on-line evaluation of knee kinematics, based on the principles of computer assisted navigation surgery, is established. A major challenge for this evaluation method is to identify the position of the bone relative to the attached markers prior to testing. In order to deal with this challenge a registration process is introduced. The theoretical derivation and optimisation of this registration process is derived and afterwards applied to a practical testing environment.

  • Influence of process parameters on the weld quality of dissimilar Cu-Al
           magnetic pulse welded sheets

      Abstract: Little is known about the influence of the main geometrical parameters (overlap, stand-off and free length) and the energy input on welds formed by electromagnetic pulse welding. The Taguchi experimental design method was applied for determining the underlying relations for dissimilar sheet welding of copper and aluminium. The weld quality was evaluated based on four output parameters: the weld length, the size of the interfacial layer, the lap shear strength and the thickness reduction of the flyer sheet. The influence of the overlap and free length showed to be non-negligible; this in contrast to the small amount of attention these parameters receive in other publications.

  • Experimental investigation of the weldability of high strength aluminium
           using friction spot welding

      Abstract: Friction spot welding is a technique for joining lightweight aluminium and magnesium alloys in the overlap configuration by means of frictional heat and mechanical work and has a high potential for industrial applications. As this is a very recent technique, little information is available regarding the evaluation and optimisation of process parameters for specific material combinations. The process has been used to investigate the weldability of the high strength aluminium alloy EN AW-7475-T761, aiming to produce high quality joints in terms of mechanical performance and microstructure. More specific, the influence of the plunge depth, rotation speed and welding time was investigated. The paper first shortly describes the process and continues with the results of the microhardness, static tensile and optical microscopy tests.

  • Validation of three-dimensional total knee replacement kinematics
           measurement using single-plane fluoroscopy

      Abstract: Instability of the knee after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is today the number one reason for aseptic revision surgery. In vivo evaluation of knee kinematics using single-plane fluoroscopy has become an important method to investigate knee stability and compare dierent implant designs. A validation experiment was performed to assess the accuracy of this method. A total knee implant was installed on sawbones and a flexion extension movement was performed with the sagittal plane parallel to the detector panel of the fluoroscope. Simultaneously, the sawbones were tracked using a conventional motion tracking system and rigidly attached markers. That measurement can be seen as a golden standard and is therefore believed to represent the real positions. The results indicate that knee rotations can be measured with an accuracy of approximately 0.6 and sagittal plane translations can be measured with an accuracy of approximately 0.4 mm. These results prove that the method is sufficiently accurate for clinical use.
