  • Assessment of the seismic risk of the museum of Casa Vasari in Arezzo
           (Italy)

      Abstract: This paper discusses the seismic risk of the museum of Casa Vasari in Arezzo (Italy), a three-storey masonry building that was the house of the Renaissance architect and painter Giorgio Vasari. To analyse the seismic risk, an interdisciplinary approach was employed based on the provision of the Italian "Guidelines for the assessment and mitigation of the seismic risk of the cultural heritage". The Guidelines identify a methodology of analysis based on three different levels of evaluation (LV1, analysis at territorial level; LV2, local analysis and LV3, global analysis), according to an increasing level of knowledge. A detailed and careful knowledge process, which included experimental in situ investigations, allowed to characterise the geometric and mechanical parameters required to perform a reliable structural assessment. The seismic assessment of the museum, that represents a typology of masonry building very diffused in the Italian territory, was performed analysing both local mechanisms and global behaviour assuming different structural configurations (according to the effectiveness of connections between the structural elements as observed during the knowledge process). Through the discussion of an emblematic case study, this paper discusses the process of knowledge and the analyses performed to assess the seismic risk of an historical masonry building.

  • Interdependence of mechanical parameters on probabilistic seismic
           performance of masonry towers

      Abstract: The assessment of seismic performance of historical masonry towers is complicated by the lack of experimental data on the material properties. The peculiarity of these structures and their historical value render difficult performing experimental tests, particularly destructive ones. For each mechanical parameter, only reasonable intervals can be defined, mostly on the base of expert judgement. In the absence of a correlation structure among them, they are usually treated as independent variables. However, the selection of material parameters in itself is non-unique. For example, considering compressive strength, elastic modulus, and strain at elastic limit, there is no obvious choice of which two should be considered as input parameters, leaving the third as a derived quantity. In the paper, the effects of different choices on the probabilistic seismic performance are investigated. A significant role of the parameter interdependence is highlighted. The most safety preserving choice of independent parameters, in the absence of a desirable correlation structure, is the one in which compressive strength, elastic modulus, and strain ductility factor are treated as independent variables while the strain at elastic limit and the ultimate strain are considered as derived quantities.

  • Damage assessment of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence by means
           of numerical modelling

      Abstract: Within 2014, a research project promoted by the Opera del Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence allowed to make new evaluations about the conservation of the Baptistery of San Giovanni. The research project was developed by an interdisciplinary team composed of experts in conservation and restoration, architects, geologists, archaeologists and structural engineers. The geometry of the Baptistery was acquired through terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) techniques and a new refined finite element (FE) model, built on the basis of the newly defined geometry was built. The numerical model was first tuned according to the available experimental results (main frequencies and mode shapes) and subsequently employed to interpret the detected cracking pattern. While providing an interpretation of the manifested damage affecting the Baptistery (through the use of the FE technique, by performing linear parametric analyses) the paper offers an illustrative case study of damage assessment in the field of monumental heritage by means of quite simple numerical tools.

  • Advanced numerical insight into the structural damage of masonry vaults
           under seismic excitation: two valuable case studies

      Abstract: Most recent earthquakes have demonstrated the high seismic vulnerability of monumental masonry buildings and, specifically, critical issues associated with complex structural elements like vaults. The main purpose of this paper is the analysis of how quadripartite vaults behave under horizontal loads and what their role is in the global seismic behaviour of historical constructions. The analysis is dealt with by referring to two different case studies: the Narthex of the Nativity Church in Bethlehem and the Fornasini tower in the North East of Italy. By means of ABAQUS, a proper finite elements model is implemented in order to assess the global structural behaviour of the structures. To this purpose, the seismic behaviour is directly evaluated thorough non-linear dynamic analyses and the obtained crack patterns are discussed thoroughly. A Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) constitutive model is used to properly account for damage phenomena and softening occurring on masonry during an earthquake.

  • Comparison of methodologies for evaluating the seismic vulnerability of
           the sanctuary of Madonna della Libera in Pratola Peligna

      Abstract: The sanctuary of Madonna della Libera in Pratola Peligna is an important place of worship, which was badly damaged during the Abruzzo earthquake on the 6th of April 2009. The extent of the damage caused by the earthquake highlighted the seismic vulnerability of the sanctuary. The seismic vulnerability assessment of churches is a difficult issue even today and represents an important preliminary step for preserving cultural heritage monuments and sites. The aim of this study is to propose a multimethodological approach for evaluating the seismic vulnerability of complex masonry buildings, such as great churches, that lack globally recognised antiseismic regulations. This approach provides a better understanding of the various aspects that characterise the seismic capacity of the structures. In particular, the nonlinear static analysis on FEM models of the main substructures of the church, the so-called 'two-steps' procedure and the nonlinear kinematic analysis of the collapse mechanisms of the main macro-elements are carried out. The evaluations are validated through comparison with the post-earthquake building damage, which provided insight for defining seismic intervention strategies.

  • Temperature-related performance factors for chemical demolition agents

      Abstract: Soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs) are percussion-free alternatives to blasting for selective demolition. Although known to be temperature sensitive, to date their performance has not been quantified in ambient environments below 20°C. This paper examines 6 large-scale specimens at 16.1-19.3°C. Substantially slower response than that reported by manufacturers was documented. Initial cracking required 25 + h and continued for 4-8 days. Cracks opened rapidly after minimum demolition time [(MDT)-cumulative cracking around the perimeter reaching ~25 mm], which was at 42 and 70 h, respectively in 16.8 and 33.1 MPa specimens. Post-MDT, crack width opening velocities were 0.35-0.96 mm/h, approximately one-third to two-thirds pre-MDT velocities. A 0.5°C ambient temperature drop delayed MDT by 6.5 h amongst equi-sized specimens of the same strength. Generally, MDT correlated with material strength (irrespective of ambient temperature or specimen size), whereas time to first crack was more influenced by temperature. Also, SCDA reapplication proved effective for incompletely cracked specimens.

  • Strengthening of masonry vaults with transversal diaphragms: a
           numerical approach

      Abstract: The compatible strengthening of historical constructions is a critical issue in modern restoration practice. Among others, numerical modelling became a powerful instrument in the practice of checking the suitability and effectiveness of a given structural strengthening solution. In particular, the topic of numerical modelling of masonry arches and vaults was developed by many researchers for several years. This paper is focused on the numerical representation of a traditional strengthening technique, based on the use of transversal masonry diaphragms applied to arches and vaults. Macro and micromodelling approaches were considered in this work as to discuss the adequacy and efficiency of the strengthened method and also compare results between the two approaches. To further define the properties and effectiveness of the strengthening solution, a parametric study was conducted by means of geometrical and mechanical modifications applied to the diaphragms.
