  • The dynamic parameters of passive human at temporary demountable
grandstands during exposure to lateral vibration

    • Authors: Jian Yuan, Lin He, Feng Fan, Cong Liu
      Pages: 265 - 283
Abstract: Modelling the interaction between crowds and temporary demountable grandstands with identifying the human dynamic properties are challenges for structure optimal design. In this paper, for investigating and understanding the human and structural lateral dynamic features. A demountable grandstand was tested to obtain its model parameters firstly. Then it is tested at amplitudes between 0.16 m/s2 to 1.54 m/s2 with 75 random waves through a shaking table when occupied by twenty persons. Afterword a simplified two-degree of freedom lumped dynamic model of the joint human-structure system is reinterpreted. Utilizing the state-space model, the passive crowd dynamic parameters are obtained, based on root mean square accumulation error analysis. Statistical analysis of the predictive results concludes that seated crowd model damping ratio is 0.5, and the probable natural frequency is 2.0 Hz with the model mass ratio 0.7. For standing crowd model, the probable natural frequency is 1.5 Hz with the model mass damping ratio 0.4, and the model mass ratio is 0.7. It may have ability to serve as a reference value that can be utilized in vibration safety and serviceability assessment of TDGs, to estimate realistically the vibration response on the occasions when crowd are seated or standing.

  • Project risk evaluation by using a new fuzzy model based on Elena
           guideline

    • Authors: Pezhman Asadi, Javad Rezaeian Zeidi, Toraj Mojibi, Abdolreza Yazdani-Chamzini, Jolanta Tamošaitienė
      Pages: 284 - 300
Abstract: The complexity and dynamics of the executive projects have coped contractors with substantial hazards and losses. Project risk management is a critical tool for authority to improve its performance and secure the success of the organization. However, a number of standards and approaches have been developed to formulate the projects based on their risks. The Elena guideline is a systematic standard developed by Iran Project Management Association. This guideline provides the full cycle of the risk management process. Risk evaluation is the key part of the risk management process. On the other hand, different techniques have been developed to model a risk evaluation problem. Fuzzy inference system is one of the most popular techniques that is capable of handling all types of the uncertainty involved in projects. This paper proposes a three-stage approach based on the fuzzy inference system under the environment of the Elena guideline to cope with the risky projects. Finally, an illustrative example of the risk evaluation is presented to demonstrate the potential application of the proposed model. The results show that the proposed model evaluates the risky projects efficiently and effectively.

  • Examining association between construction inspection grades and critical
defects using data mining and fuzzy logic

    • Authors: Chien-Liang Lin, Ching-Lung Fan
      Pages: 301 - 315
Abstract: This paper explores the relations between defect types and quality inspection grades of public construction projects in Taiwan. Altogether, 499 defect types (classified from 17,648 defects) were found after analyzing 990 construction projects from the Public Construction Management Information System of the public construction commission which is a government unit that administers all the public construction. The core of this research includes the following steps. (1) Data mining (DM) was used to derive 57 association rules which altogether contain 30 of the 499 defect types. (2) K-means clustering was used to regroup the 990 projects of two attributes (defect frequency and original grading score of each project) into four new quality classes, so the 990 projects can be more evenly distributed in the four new classes and the correctness and reliability of the following analyses can be ensured. (3) Finally analysis of variance (ANOVA), fuzzy logic, and correlation analysis were used to verify that the aforementioned 30 defect types are the important ones determining inspection grades. Results of this research can help stakeholders of construction projects paying more attention on the root causes of the critical defect types so to dramatically raise their management effectiveness.

  • System dynamics model based on evolutionary game theory for quality
           supervision among construction stakeholders

    • Authors: Shengyu Guo, Pan Zhang, Jianying Yang
      Pages: 316 - 328
Abstract: To address the gap, that is, few studies have explored the influence of the participants’ interactions with one another during construction quality supervision, this paper proposes a system dynamics model based on evolutionary game theory to describe the complex and dynamic interactions among tripartite stakeholders in China, including the project owner (PO), construction supervising engineer (CSE), and construction contractor (CC). First, the replicated dynamic equation set is established in terms of expense targets. Second, the equilibrium solutions of the equation set are obtained to test strategy options. The trends of system fluctuations caused by penalty and reward changes are also analyzed. Finally, the stability of the proposed model is improved by integrating a dynamic penalty–reward scenario into the evolutionary strategy of the PO. Simulation results show that: 1) the evolutionary stable strategy does not exist in initial interactions, 2) the degrees of penalty and reward considerably affect the CC’s rate variable, and 3) the dynamic penalty–reward scenario could effectively improve the stability of the proposed model. The unsteadiness of the quality supervision system and the stability control scenario could help in understanding the impact of interactions among stakeholders and provide suggestions for optimizing quality supervision procedures.

  • Analyzing the factors influencing trust in a construction project:
           evidence from a Sino-German eco-park in China

    • Authors: Dedong Wang, Kaili Li, Shaoze Fang
      Pages: 331 - 343
Abstract: Trust is regarded as a critical feature and a central mechanism in business transactions, especially in the Chinese guanxi network. In this context, the major objective of this research is to explore the key factors influencing trust in different stages of a construction project from the perspectives of owners and consultants involved in a Sino-German eco-park in China. The analytic network process (ANP) was employed to assess which factors are most closely related to trust and to establish four models to meet the objective of this study. According to the ANP results, trust is strongly influenced by factors that are associated with the mutual interests between owners and consultants. In addition, there are certain differences in the priority of the factors influencing initial trust between owners and consultants, but these gaps gradually decrease over time. The weight of guanxi also decreases over time, and the owners’ and consultants’ guanxi transforms from out-group to in-group focused.

  • Nonlinear finite element analysis of continuous welded rail–bridge
           interaction: monitoring-based calibration

    • Authors: Alfred Strauss, Martina Šomodíková, David Lehký, Drahomír Novák, Konrad Bergmeister
      Pages: 344 - 354
Abstract: Continuous welded rail is of high interest to operators of railway infrastructure facilities because of the reduced maintenance work and better train driving dynamics it offers. However, the application of continuous welded rail, in particular associated with its interaction with the superstructures of e.g. bridges, requires special caution with regard to the rail stresses in the transition area between the structure and the free field. These stresses are not only influenced by thermal deformations of the bridges but also by the clamp systems between the rails and e.g. the bridge. In general, these connectors are represented by spring elements during modelling, which: (a) causes singularities in the stress distributions in the rails, and (b) cannot capture all the mechanical system changes occurring due to loading, thermal effects, etc. The target of this paper is to present an alternative way of modelling the connection between rails and bridge superstructure based on composite materials which can overcome the disadvantages of the spring model. In particular, a nonlinear model of the whole system was developed for ballasted and non-ballasted track. Special attention was paid to the calibration of rail–bridge interaction and boundary conditions using measured data and code specifications. The aim of this study was to use the results of in-situ measurements to analyse the admissible stress in rails due to their interaction with a bridge caused by temperature loading.

  • Reducing renewable resource demand fluctuation using soft precedence
           relations in project scheduling

    • Authors: Piotr Jaskowski, Slawomir Biruk
      Pages: 355 - 363
Abstract: Renewable resource levelling is the core of the scheduling process. A perfect schedule ensures that resource supply corresponds to the demand at every unit of project time. A classic approach to resource levelling in schedules with predefined project completion dates consists in manipulating processes start dates. Resource deployment can be also improved by considering alternative construction processes execution modes with various crew formations, and by allowing activities to be split. There are other possibilities: in many practical cases, the activities’ precedence logic predefined in the network model can be changed with no harm to the project outcome. Within the structure of the project network model, some precedence relations between activities would definitely be of fixed (hard) character, whereas some might allow the activities to be executed at the same time or arranged in a variety of logical sequences. The authors use soft precedence relations that let the processes run in reversed order or that can be cancelled, in search for improved resource usage profiles. The benefits of scheduling with soft precedence relations are demonstrated by an example.
