  • Effect of specimen crack lengths on stress intensity factor for Al6061-TiC
           composites using experimental and 3D numerical methods

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the determination of critical stress intensity factor (KC) both by experimental method and three-dimensional (3D) finite element simulations. Design/methodology/approach CT specimens of different compositions of Al6061-TiC composites (3wt%, 5wt% and 7wt% TiC) with variable crack length to width (a/W=0.3-0.6) ratios are machined from as-cast composite block. After fatigue pre-cracking the specimens to a required crack length, experimental load vs crack mouth opening displacement data are plotted to calculate the KC value. Elastic 3D finite element simulations have been conducted for CT specimens of various compositions and a/W ratios to compute KC. The experimental results indicate that the magnitude of KC depends on a/W ratios, and significantly decreases with increase in a/W ratios of the specimen. Findings From 3D finite element simulation, the KC results at the centre of CT specimens for various Al6061-TiC composites and a/W ratios show satisfactory agreement with experimental results compared to the surface. Originality/value The research work contained in this manuscript was conducted during 2015-2016. It is original work except where due reference is made. The authors confirm that the research in their work is original, and that all the data given in the article are real and authentic. If necessary, the paper can be recalled, and errors corrected.

  • Delamination analysis of a layered elastic-plastic beam

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to perform a theoretical analysis of delamination fracture behaviour of the Crack Lap Shear layered beam configuration taking into account the material non-linearity. A delamination crack located arbitrarily along the beam height was considered in this study. Design/methodology/approach The beam mechanical behaviour was described by using the Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain relation. Fracture was analysed by applying the J-integral approach. Besides by using symmetric Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain curve, fracture was investigated also by Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain curve that is not symmetric with respect to tension and compression. The J-integral solutions were verified by performing elastic-plastic analyses of the strain energy release rate. Findings The effects of crack location and material properties on the non-linear fracture behaviour were evaluated. It was found that the material non-linearity leads to increase of the J-integral values. Therefore, the material non-linearity has to be taken into account in fracture mechanics based safety design of structural members composed by layered materials. The analytical solutions derived are very useful for parametric investigations of delamination fracture with considering the material non-linearity. The results obtained can be applied for optimisation of the beam structure with respect to fracture performance. Originality/value The present study contributes for the understanding of delamination fracture in layered beams that exhibit non-linear material behaviour.

  • Numerical data used for producing failure assessment diagram in integrity
           analysis of cylindrical shell with crack

      Purpose Integrity assessment is used to ensure reliability operation of a pressurized equipment containing defects. Based on data of cylindrical shell dimensions, operation conditions, material properties and crack dimensions, an assessment can be carried out, using either Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 procedure. Assessment using Level 3 procedure within the code requires a finite element simulation in order to generate both the evaluation point and the failure assessment diagram (FAD) that serves as the acceptance criteria. The purpose of this paper is to provide the numerical data which are used for integrity assessment of a pressure vessel containing crack. Here, a parametric study has been carried out to generate such result for the cases of longitudinal crack defect in a cylindrical shell for a number of common cases, in terms of thickness-to-radius ratio, crack size ratio and crack aspect ratio. Design/methodology/approach The evaluation of stress intensity factor is determined through J-integral parameter found using a finite element analysis with a specially meshed strategy incorporating the crack. A comparison is made against stress intensity factor provided by the code. Findings A good agreement is obtained with percent error of 2.13 percent for low aspect ratio crack, and 0.57 percent for high aspect ratio crack. Furthermore, a study has been carried out using the methodology for 160 cases, covering both cases already available in the code and other cases of crack in cylindrical shells. The result can be used as a complement to the existing tabular data available in the code for Level 2 assessment, to be used for integrity analysis of damaged cylindrical shells based on the FAD criteria. Originality/value The result can be used as a complement to the existing tabular data available in the API 579 code for Level 2 assessment, to be used for integrity analysis of damaged cylindrical shells based on the FAD criteria. New equations were generated based on finite element analysis and can be used for Level 3 assessment of the code.

  • Corrosion resistance and mechanical characteristics of dual-phase steel
           B500c, after shot blasting processes

      Purpose Corrosive agent constitutes a major problem for constructions located in coastal areas, since it keeps affecting their durability. This phenomenon, in synergy with moisture and high temperatures, leads to premature deterioration of the structures. Under these conditions, the need for management of the problem of resistance of steel against corrosion is an issue of paramount importance and a challenge to the structural integrity and reliability. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The need for management of the problem of resistance of steel against corrosion is an issue of paramount importance and a challenge to the structural integrity and reliability. In the present study, an effort was made to increase the corrosion resistance of the high strength and ductility dual-phase steel B500c category, with the use of different shot blasting processes, without any interference in the chemical composition or in the production mode. In particular, shot blasting treatment was used for both cleaning and creating compressive stresses on the surface of steel bars, according to the pertinent protocols. The modified samples were studied via both conventional characterization methods and electrochemical techniques. Findings Through the whole surface treatment process of B500c steel, a positive impact came about not only the corrosion resistance, but also the mechanical performance. Originality/value Shot blasting process aims to increase the corrosion resistance of high ductility dual-phase steel (B500c), without any interference in the chemical composition or in the production mode.

  • Controlling the failure of marine structures attached to the bottom of the
           sea under dynamic loading

      Purpose Analysis of designing and controlling the failure of marine structures attached to the bottom of the sea under dynamic load obtained from the sea waves is one of the main engineering challenges in recent years. The circumstances of the onshore marine structures have their own complexity and the difficulty due to the effect of hydrodynamic factors and dynamic responses which are dominant in the marine environment. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The structure elements are composed of the metal pipe with a length of 5 m, outside diameter of 20 cm and thickness of 1.5 mm. the failure control with a safety factor of 2 indicates the absence of the above marine structure failure. It has been diagnosed to be trustworthy and reliable. Findings In this study, the control of marine steel structure failure with the height of 60 m under the dynamic load of the sea water waves having sinusoidal shape in the Caspian Sea has been studied and analyzed. Originality/value In this paper, the minimum and maximum internal force and movement in six directions of freedom were obtained for each element. To analyze and control the failure, the combination of stresses caused by static and dynamic loads has been used. According to the regulation of 10-360-AISC, the control was conducted.

  • Physical vapour deposition of diamond-like carbon coatings on a 7075-T6
           substrate for corrosion protection at long and short fatigue lives

      Purpose 7075-T6 is the most widespread structural aluminium alloy due to its high mechanical strength. However, use of this alloy in critical aeronautic, maritime, and automotive sectors is limited by the susceptibility of T6 treatment to cracking and pitting corrosion. To improve fatigue behaviour in aggressive environments, several authors have proposed the use of different coatings to protect the substrate. Studies have investigated the application of thin hard coatings on light alloys by physical vapour deposition (PVD). Different contributions of residual stresses, thermal modification of the substrate, and mechanical interaction between the coating and aluminium substrate were investigated. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the rotating bending fatigue behaviour (R=−1) of 7075-T6 PVD diamond-like carbon (DLC)-coated specimens in air and in a corrosive environment. Tests were conducted at different applied stresses. Scanning electron micrographs of the fracture surface are provided to investigate the influences of mechanical and environmental driving forces on the failure mechanism. Design/methodology/approach The paper conducted an experimental study of the fatigue resistance of DLC coatings on a 7075-T6 substrate for corrosion protection at long and short fatigue lives, which includes rotating bending fatigue tests, step-loading fatigue test procedure, tests in aggressive environment (methanol), tests at high and low fatigue lives, analysis of the fracture surface, and analysis of the driving forces. Findings Tests performed in air showed that the coating anticipates crack nucleation for high applied loads, whereas for lower loads, the difference among fatigue curves decreases. This result is very interesting from an industrial standpoint because the obtained material shows improved corrosion and wear resistance, without the fatigue resistance loss generally associated with hard coatings. The methanol environment accelerates crack nucleation and propagation, resulting in a sensible deterioration of the fatigue behaviour. A minimum soaking time seems to be necessary before the damaging effect of the environment begins. The coating has a certain protective effect against the environment, but this protection is insufficient for the specimen to achieve fatigue limits beyond those of the uncoated specimens. This deficiency can be related to small pores or defects in the coating, which allow contact between the substrate and the environment. Further tests are necessary to verify whether there exists a load under which the fatigue behaviour of the coated specimens is better than that of the uncoated specimens. Crack nucleation due to fatigue occurs close to the outer surface for all observed samples. For coated samples tested at the lowest stress level, crack nucleation seems to be located below the surface. This observation means that premature coating cracking, which characterises the nucleation mechanism at higher loads, did not occur at lower stress levels. The fracture surface of uncoated samples was clearly damaged by the aggressive solution, justifying the poor fatigue resistance. Research limitations/implications The obtained data do not represent actual S-N curves, which would necessitate a larger number of tests with proper statistics. Nevertheless, some indications of the DLC effects on 7075-T6 specimens in air and methanol environments can be deduced. The step-loading technique seems to be critical for tests in corrosive environments, probably because the total soaking time in the corrosive environment is generally higher than it is for the single-run test. Originality/value The originality of the paper lies in the application of the step-loading test procedure to quickly detect the mechanical and chemical driving forces that control the damage and structural integrity of light alloys components in very aggressive environments.

  • Highly orthotropic panels structural stability, Farrar and Bloch waves
           theory

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the studies to develop structural highly orthotropic panels. These types of panels provide the capabilities required for structural morphing. They are highly deformable in one given direction; and in the perpendicular direction, one must be compliant to sustain the internal loads per certification stiffness and strength requirements. Design/methodology/approach Neither classic orthotropic panels nor regular cellular solids Bloch wave theories are strictly applicable on their study. A combination of computational method, MATLAB-coded, to analyze stability and classic structural beam theory is studied. Then, non-linear finite element method models are developed for an aerospace control surface application; their results are compared with reported Bloch wave sequences on periodic cellular solid panels. Findings The stability along stiffer direction is a requirement to obtain a continuous deformation and plasticization sequence of the cell rows in the perpendicular direction. A sample panel is sized and 3D modeled, and then produced using additive layer manufacturing process to demonstrate the initial stages of a validation and verification campaign. Originality/value This paper provides a new method to mechanical characterize highly orthotropic panels.

  • 3D-FEM computation and experimental study of eddy currents for
           characterization of surface cracks

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach for computing by measuring and testing related 3D Eddy currents. In the process, a magnetic vector is formulated from the theoretical setup and obtained results from relevant applications are checked for the consistency of the theory. Besides, cracks detection as well as its propagation is studied through the two parameters: SIF and J-integral. A simulation by a numerical approach using finite-element discretization of 3D governing equations is employed to detect damaged zones and cracks. This approach has been used in the aircraft industry to control cracks. Besides, it makes it possible to highlight the defects of parts while preserving the integrity of the controlled products. Obtained results are compared and agreed with those of other researchers. Design/methodology/approach Finite-element discretization of 3D for solving problem in eddy current testing is presented in this paper. The main idea is the introduction of categorization for the shape reconstruction using the non-destructive testing by 3D-EC. The results are presented for a simple eddy current problem using the finite-element method as an experimental support. Findings In this research work, results of the various cases of simulation have been obtained. From these results of various boxes of simulation, one can conclude that the calculation of the impedance in only one point is not enough to confirm the presence or the absence of a defect for materials. Then, this confirmation leads us to the calculation of the impedance along the plate. The detection of an external defect requires the energy of the sensor by high frequencies .The position of defect (internal, in the middle, external) has a large effect on the impedance. The use of this sensor type in industrial application is frequent because of its precision (minimal error) and its low costs. The major disadvantage of this type of sensor lies in the fact that it is unable to detect a defect. Originality/value This paper fulfills an identified need to detect cracks in materials and eventually to study their propagation.
