  • Design of self-healing catalysts for aircraft application

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight the relevant role of the stereochemistry of two Ruthenium catalysts on the self-healing efficiency of aeronautical resins. Design/methodology/approach Here, a very detailed evaluation on the stereochemistry of two new ruthenium catalysts evidences the crucial role of the spatial orientation of phenyl groups in the N-heterocyclic carbene ligands in determining the temperature range within the curing cycles is feasible without deactivating the self-healing mechanisms (ring-opening metathesis polymerization reactions) inside the thermosetting resin. The exceptional activity and thermal stability of the HG2MesPhSyn catalyst, with the syn orientation of phenyl groups, highlight the relevant potentiality and the future perspectives of this complex for the activation of the self-healing function in aeronautical resins. Findings The HG2MesPhSyn complex, with the syn orientation of the phenyl groups, is able to activate metathesis reactions within the highly reactive environment of the epoxy thermosetting resins, cured up to 180°C, while the other stereoisomer, with the anti-orientation of the phenyl groups, does not preserve its catalytic activity in these conditions. Originality/value In this paper, a comparison between the self-healing functionality of two catalytic systems has been performed, using metathesis tests and FTIR spectroscopy. In the field of the design of catalytic systems for self-healing structural materials, a very relevant result has been found: a slight difference in the molecular stereochemistry plays a key role in the development of self-healing materials for aeronautical and aerospace applications.

  • Multi-functional nanotechnology integration for aeronautical structures
           performance enhancement

      Abstract: International Journal of Structural Integrity, Volume 9, Issue 6, Page 737-752, December 2018.
      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the applicative potentiality of functional/self-responsive materials in aeronautics. In particular, the study aims to experimentally validate the enhancement of structural performances of carbon fibers samples in the presence of nanofillers, as multi-walled carbon nanontubes or microcapsules for the self-healing functionality. Design/methodology/approach The paper opted for a mechanical study. Experimental static and dynamic tests on “blank” and modified formulations were performed in order to estimate both strength and damping parameters. A cantilever beam test set-up has been proposed. As a parallel activity, a numerical FE approach has been introduced to assess the correct modeling of the system. Findings The paper provides practical and empirical insights about how self-responsive materials react to mechanical solicitations. It suggests that reinforcing a sample positively affects the samples properties since they, de facto, improve the global structural performance. This work highlights that the addition of carbon nanotubes strongly improves the mechanical properties with a simultaneous slight enhancement in the damping performance. Damping properties are, instead, strongly enhanced by the addition of self-healing components. A balanced combination of both fillers could be adopted to increase electrical conductivity and to improve global performance in damping and auto-repairing properties. Practical implications The paper includes implications for the use of lightweight composite materials in aeronautics. Originality/value This paper fulfills an identified need to study new lightweight self-responsive smart materials for aeronautical structural application.

  • Mechanical behavior of aeronautical composites containing self-healing
           microcapsules

      Purpose Over the last decades, self-healing materials based on polymers are attracting increasing interest due to their potential for detecting and “autonomically” healing damage. The use of embedded self-healing microcapsules represents one of the most popular self-healing concepts. Yet, extensive investigations are still needed to convince on the efficiency of the above concept. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach In the present work, the effect of embedded self-healing microcapsules on the ILSS behavior of carbon fiber reinforced composite materials has been studied. Moreover, the self-healing efficiency has been assessed. The results of the mechanical tests were discussed supported by scanning electron microscope (SEM) as well as by Attenuated Total Reflection–Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) analyses. Findings The results indicate a general trend of a degraded mechanical behavior of the enhanced materials, as the microcapsules exhibit a non-uniform dispersion and form agglomerations which act as internal defects. A remarkable value of the self-healing efficiency has been found for materials with limited damage, e.g. matrix micro-cracks. However, for significant damage, in terms of large matrix cracks and delaminations as well as fiber breakages, the self-healing efficiency is limited. Originality/value The results obtained by SEM analysis as well as by ATR–FTIR spectroscopy constitute a strong indication that the self-healing mechanism has been activated. However, further investigation should be conducted in order to provide definite evidence.

  • Experimental investigation of the curing behaviour of fibre composite
           structures with snap-cure polymer systems

      Purpose Novel snap-cure polymers (SCPs), as matrix systems for high-performance fibre composite materials, provide high potential for manufacturing of component families with small batch sizes and high variability. Especially, the processing of powdered SCP is associated with relatively simple and inexpensive tools. In addition, because of their curing behaviour, they allow short tooling times so that the production of small batch size components is possible in relatively short cycle times. To enable an efficient manufacturing process, an understanding of the curing process is necessary. An adjustment of the process parameters for a uniform design of the temperature field in the material during the manufacturing process is essential. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach For this, a powder SCP resin system was investigated under process-specific conditions. An experimental test approach for determination of various thermal and kinetic material properties was developed. For the adjustment of the process parameters and monitoring of the curing state during the manufacturing process, a kinetic material model was determined. In the end, the validation of the determined model was performed. For this, the temperature distribution under process- specific conditions was measured in order to monitor the curing state of the material. Findings The experimental investigation showed an uneven temperature field in the material, which leads to an inhomogeneous curing process. This can lead to residual stresses in the structure, which have a critical impact on the material properties. Originality/value The determined kinetic model allows a prediction of the curing reaction and adjustment of the process parameters which is essential, especially for thick-walled components with SCPs.

  • Active thermography as a tool for internal composite structure observation
           and evaluation

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study if it is possible applying infrared thermography (both vibro and pulsed) to detect and localise material discontinuities as well as to find the place where the inclusion was introduced. Design/methodology/approach The experimental investigation is performed on samples manufactured during infusion process. The measurements were performed on three four-layered rectangular composite samples with discontinuities. The discontinuities introduced in the samples were as follow: all three samples between first and second layer counting form the bottom two optical fibres (OFs) were embedded and additionally: sample no. 1 – one of the OF was broken, sample no. 2 – the drop of water was introduced, and sample no. 3 – the little amount of dust was introduced. Findings For some discontinuities, the vibrothermography is excellent tool (placement of broken OF, drop of water), for same is not sufficient (healthy OFs or dust). For dust, the pulsed thermography seems to be the required tool. Different approaches (vibrothermography and pulsed thermography) for the same sample will confirm that for same defects vibrothermograpy is better and for some pulsed thermography – complex combination of different thermography approaches is needed to have complex response about sample structural condition. Originality/value The presented paper is an original research work. There are very limited literature papers applying both vibro and pulsed thermography for one problem. The assessment of different discontinuities (inclusions) and detailed analysis is presented.

  • THz spectroscopy for inspection and evaluation of internal structure of
           sandwich samples

      Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the application of THz spectroscopy for the inspection and evaluation of the internal structure of complex samples with honeycomb fillers. Design/methodology/approach Three complex samples with honeycomb fillers are investigated using THz spectrometer in order to determine the applicability of chosen non-destructive method for the analysis of internal structure of structural components. The first analysed sample has aluminium honeycomb filler with some cells filled with water. The aim of the analysis is to distinguish empty and full cells. The other two sandwich samples are made of different non-metallic components and for them the possibility of THz spectroscopy application is analysed. Findings The empty and full cells in metal honeycomb filler were easily distinguished due to different absorption coefficients of electromagnetic waves in THz range for air and water. It was especially visible for frequency domain. The THz spectroscopy was able to inspect the non-metallic samples internal structures and distinguish skins (with layers), honeycomb fillers and adhesive layers between them. It was also possible to detect, localise and determine the size of a local damage of honeycomb walls due to impact influence. Originality/value The present study is an original research work. There are very limited literature papers which present analyses of internal structures of sandwich elements using THz spectroscopy and investigate utility of the method for mechanical damage and contamination (water) detection and localisation.
