  • Development of EFL Student Global Mindedness Through Transformative
           Learning in the Literature Classroom at a Thai University

      This study investigated English as a foreign language learners’ global mindedness through the use of transformative learning experiences in the literature classroom. The sample consisted of 50 second-year English major students who were enrolled in the introduction to literature course in the academic year 2018 at a public university in the northern part of Thailand. The instruments included six lesson plans using transformative learning theory to promote global mindedness, a Global Mindedness Scale, a classroom observation schedule, and a list of semi-structured interview questions. The t test was used to compare the participants’ global mindedness before and after engaging in the activities based on transformative learning theory. Content analysis was also performed on the students’ work output to explore their transformational learning experiences. This study found that student global mindedness following participation in activities based on transformative learning theory was significantly higher compared to their global mindedness prior to engaging in the activities.

  • Transformative Learning and the Arts: A Literature Review

      Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
      Between 2005 and 2017 yielded fertile ground for research studies and articles about transformative learning and the arts within the field of adult education. The main questions this article seeks to answer are: What art forms are being used for transformative learning, how are they being used, and with what effect' The article begins by establishing the rationale for Artistic Ways of Knowing and gives a brief summary of the topic. The remainder of the article focuses on transformative learning and is organized around a variety of artistic categories. The conclusion includes critical reflections and suggestions for further applications of this topic, through research, programs, and policy. The overall goal for this literature review is to serve as a foundational source, to gather the research on this topic together, and to provide a springboard for future research in this area.

  • Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) as Alternative Lifeworlds:
           Transformative Learning in Cyberspace

      Direct instruction (PowerPoint presentations, lectures) often imposes hierarchical classroom structures where the teachers are considered experts, imparting knowledge to passive learners. However, the emergence of tools like Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) encourages the creation of democratic learning environments. We hypothesize that these tools lead to higher degrees of civil discourse within the classroom and create transformative learning trajectories for students, allowing them to create shared purpose to incite social change. By comparing reflectivity displayed in weekly students’ blogging assignments in a classroom using an MUVE (Second Life), and one using direct instruction, we sought to gauge the effect MUVEs had on students’ reflectivity with the passage of time. Results indicated that MUVEs facilitated more critical reflection and transformative learning trajectories as compared to direct instruction frameworks.

  • Transformative Sustainability Education in Higher Education: Activating
           Environmental Understanding and Active Citizenship Among Professional
           Studies Learners

      Transformative sustainability education (TSE) is an uncommon pedagogical practice in higher education, even though it has a positive impact on student learning and behavioral change. This qualitative case study explored 20 Israeli graduate students' understanding of the social-ecological systems through the analysis of reflections, interviews, and observations. The findings reported that these graduate students displayed a deep understanding of the social-ecological systems when TSE was applied in a higher education course. As such, TSE contributed to these graduate students' knowledge construction along with encouraging their pro-environmental action. We concluded that teacher professional training, especially in higher education, should emphasize knowledge construction as a key for action, as part of TSE, in creating relational change at ontological and epistemological levels

  • I Am Not Alone: Expanding the Epistemological Framework for Supporting
           Marginalized Women’s Transformative Learning

      Marginalized adults have limited access to learning experiences that prioritize reflection and discourse, both considered preconditions in the Mezirow-informed field of transformative learning (TL). Using narrative analysis of a staff focus group and participant interviews over a 1-year learning journey, this study shows how a literacy program in a women’s homeless shelter created conditions that supported TL for two marginalized women of color. Results show how program learning goals were attuned to issues of positionality for women marginalized by race, class, and gender and were consistent with Africentric womanist epistemological and axiological assumptions. Conditions that fostered connectedness among women in troubling contexts and contributed to qualitative change in ways of knowing included purposeful spaces dedicated to reflection, dialogue, and student-centered pedagogy. The findings have important implications for the theoretical grounding of policy and practice in support of marginalized women’s TL.

  • College Student Reactions to Holocaust Education From the Perspective of
           the Theme of Complicity and Collaboration

      A colloquium series funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities explored complicity and collaboration during the Holocaust at a community college in New York. Student reactions to this theme were explored to measure their understanding of this atrocity. Twenty-three student participants of this colloquium submitted to in-depth, in-person interviews. A descriptive qualitative process enabled the researcher to identify specific themes that emerged regarding student growth. Student reflections explore the extent to which Holocaust education enables transformational learning at the college level, specifically in this case by exploring bystander behavior. Challenges of Holocaust education may be confronted by developing a focus for students to use as a framework. Results suggest a framework facilitates student growth and enrichment. This study is a reflection on practice regarding exposure to the Holocaust in higher education and its potential to stimulate transformation.

  • Liminal States of Disorienting Dilemmas: Two Case Studies of English
           Teacher Candidates

      Research has shown that progressive methods taught in teacher education programs have little impact on traditional approaches teacher candidates encounter during their internship semester. To understand how to better address this disconnect with regard to preparing teacher candidates, the study reported here used instrumental case studies to examine two secondary English teacher candidates’ beliefs about teaching literature before, during, and after their student teaching semester. Through theoretical frameworks on learning processes, the researchers discovered discrepancies within the student teachers’ stated beliefs, lesson plans, videos of teaching, and their responses to interview questions. These discrepancies reveal both unexamined assumptions and a state of liminality, reflecting the process of transformation in their learning. The researchers suggest that education programs look at potential implications that are inherent in a state of liminality with regard to pedagogical content knowledge to better prepare teacher candidates for their experience in teacher education programs.

  • Teaching for Transformation: Master of Social Work Students Identify
           Teaching Approaches That Made a Difference

      Transformative learning captures the process by which students engage in their learning, experience a change in perspective, of themselves or society, and then enact their new understanding. The purpose of this 4-year, four-cohort study was to identify the transformative learning experiences of Master of Social Work students and specific student engagement strategies they felt made a difference in preparing them for professional practice. Six focus groups (n = 40) were conducted using established focus group methodology. All focus groups were audio recorded, professionally transcribed verbatim, and subject to qualitative content analysis. Students identified six themes in student engagement strategies that facilitated their transformative learning, including transformative aspects of the curriculum, experiences with peers, qualities in their relationships with faculty that fostered critical reflection, a sense of identity, and mentoring. This study will help educators better identify teaching strategies to engage students in their personal and professional transformative learning.

  • Transforming Personal Narratives: An Evaluation of a Songwriting Workshop
           for Rural Women

      The purpose of this article was to evaluate the contribution to the social and emotional well-being of rural women of a 3-day songwriting workshop. Six participants wrote songs and performed these locally and at the Women of the World Festival. Guided by narrative inquiry and transformative learning theory, this case study included data from reflective journals, one-on-one interviews, and written songs. Vignettes of the women’s key life moments were constructed and analyzed thematically. Four themes were identified: the importance and influence of personal experiences on songwriting, learning from process and one another, intrapersonal benefits, and interpersonal benefits. The article argued songwriting workshops provide opportunities for participants to reflect on experiences and to transform their worldviews. That is, songs and the songwriting process can help participants to restory their lives and enhance their sense of social and emotional well-being.

  • On Disruption and Construction, Reflection and Reorganization in
           Psychotherapist Development: A Taxonomy of Transformative Learning
           Outcomes

      The beginning period of psychotherapist development has been conceptually and empirically identified as the most difficult and potentially problematic. The budding therapist is struggling to define a therapist identity, settle into the role of being a “helper,” and come to grips with being a helper who can “heal.” That struggle, I contend, is at its core a transformative learning process that involves developing a guiding vision of oneself as therapist, where the shift from becoming to being is made reality. In what follows, I examine transformative learning theory as a framework for enhancing our understanding about the beginning period of therapist development. The specific question that I consider is: What transformative learning outcomes occur for the beginning psychotherapist in the process of developing a therapist identity' I draw on and analogize from Hoggan’s typology of transformative learning outcomes in providing an answer to that question.
