  • Brazilian Students Studying in the United States: Perceptions of Their
Lived Experiences 6 Months After Returning Home
    • Authors: Simone C. O. Conceição, Liliana Mina, Todd Southern
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
A key challenge for international students in the United States is a readiness to study and live in a culture that is vastly different from their own. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of the lived experiences of Brazilian students studying in the United States 6 months after returning home. Thirty-three Brazilian students responded to an open-ended, self-reflective online questionnaire focusing on their lived experience in the U.S. Three major themes emerged from the data based on the interactions between the multiple systems Brazilian students lived in the U.S.: personal growth and development, perspective transformation, and change in worldview. Participants claimed that they perceived their experiences influenced their perceptions about their own country and culture and gave them a new perspective expanding their horizons about themselves and their role in the world. The article concludes with practical implications, study limitations, and suggestions for future research.

  • Autoethnographic Dance and Transformative Learning: Exploring
           Self-Reflexive Identity Work and Change
    • Authors: Cheryl K. Baldwin, Alyssa E. Motter
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
This retrospective case study investigated how learners in a transformative autoethnographic dance course engaged in and navigated self-reflexive identity work and corresponding learning outcomes. Data were drawn from 15 diverse undergraduate students enrolled in a course for credit at an urban community college. Findings indicated that learners used choreographic motifs to evoke emotional aspects of a biographic experience and to manage their emotional vulnerability. Learners differed in their self-disclosure, types of reflection, and degree of resolution in their dance narratives. Transformation of identity was found for one third of the class with evidence of change both from exploration of preconscious emotions and epistemic change in perspective.

  • Action Confidence as an Indicator of Transformative Change
    • Authors: Eva Pomeroy, Keira Oliver
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
This article reports on the findings from an interview-based, qualitative study of adult learners in Scotland participating in the MITx u.lab massive open online course in 2015 and 2016. It focuses on interviewees’ accounts of the impact of participating in u.lab on their work and lives. Using grounded theory as an analytical guide, we explore participants’ perceptions of the impact of their engagement in the learning process, which reflects intrapersonal, relational, and systemic learning. Through these accounts, we became particularly interested in participants’ relationship to taking action and the way this changed over the course of their participation in the learning process. We conclude that an embodied change in one’s perception of the nature and purpose of action—something we call “action confidence”—is reflective of transformative learning as it indicates a significant epistemological change for participants.

  • Coming to Appreciate Diversity: Ontological Change Through
           Student–Student Relationships
    • Authors: Brian Kelleher Sohn
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
This article, developed from a phenomenological case study of a graduate seminar, presents the development of student–student relationships over the course of a semester and the ways in which they were part of a transformative learning (TL) experience. Often neglected in studies of adult learners, such relationships are revealed to be of critical importance to fostering TL —not to diminish teacher–student relationships but to augment them. Participant diversity included gender, age, race, religion, and field of study. Findings include the student experiences of being “all together” in a collegial and supportive classroom environment and how their relationships developed over time. Superficial comparisons between students, as the course progressed, gave way to intimate explorations of content and changes in disposition. Interpretation of the findings is guided by existential phenomenology and TL theory. Implications for instructors include adapting a phenomenological approach to teaching that brings students together through emotional engagement.

  • Considering Transformative Learning for Adolescents Enrolled at Semester
           Schools
    • Authors: Lisa Meerts-Brandsma, Jim Sibthorp
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
This study examines semester schools, which have elements associated with transformative learning, and an adolescent population, where transformative learning has less commonly been studied. We administered the Learning Activities Survey pre/post semester (n = 173) and followed the survey with semistructured interviews (n = 30) to assess whether students experienced Mezirow’s stages of transformative learning and achieved perspective transformation. Our results suggest that adolescents experience the stages of transformative learning more frequently at semester schools than at their originating schools. However, while students said they achieved perspective transformation on the surveys, interviews revealed that the outcome might better be described as a cycle of identity formation. Students said that the relationships with teachers and students, time for reflection, and the structure of the semester were important to their learning. Specifically, a supportive but challenging environment provided content that they reflected on to gain insight into their values and beliefs.

  • Transformative Learning and Well-Being for Emerging Adults in Higher
           Education
    • Authors: Glen L. Sherman
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
The concept of well-being has emerged over the past several years in a significant way in higher education across North America, posing the question of what well-being means in relation to transformative education. The meaning and implications of relating well-being and transformative learning for emerging adults, college and university students aged 18–25, are articulated. Critical thinking, typically cited as the ideal mental activity aimed for in higher education, is explored in relation to mindfulness as a complementary form of mental activity and in both their connections to contemplative education. This unites these sometimes disparate activities many educators see as essential functions for student success, suggests a more holistic conception of student well-being, and promotes transformative education through a process of self-clarification for students in the midst of emerging adulthood.

Environmental Understanding and Active Citizenship Among Professional
           Studies Learners
    • Authors: Adiv Gal, Dafna Gan
      First page: 271
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
Transformative sustainability education (TSE) is an uncommon pedagogical practice in higher education, even though it has a positive impact on student learning and behavioral change. This qualitative case study explored 20 Israeli graduate students' understanding of the social-ecological systems through the analysis of reflections, interviews, and observations. The findings reported that these graduate students displayed a deep understanding of the social-ecological systems when TSE was applied in a higher education course. As such, TSE contributed to these graduate students' knowledge construction along with encouraging their pro-environmental action. We concluded that teacher professional training, especially in higher education, should emphasize knowledge construction as a key for action, as part of TSE, in creating relational change at ontological and epistemological levels

  • Development of EFL Student Global Mindedness Through Transformative
Learning in the Literature Classroom at a Thai University
    • Authors: Sukanya Kaowiwattanakul
      First page: 293
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
This study investigated English as a foreign language learners’ global mindedness through the use of transformative learning experiences in the literature classroom. The sample consisted of 50 second-year English major students who were enrolled in the introduction to literature course in the academic year 2018 at a public university in the northern part of Thailand. The instruments included six lesson plans using transformative learning theory to promote global mindedness, a Global Mindedness Scale, a classroom observation schedule, and a list of semi-structured interview questions. The t test was used to compare the participants’ global mindedness before and after engaging in the activities based on transformative learning theory. Content analysis was also performed on the students’ work output to explore their transformational learning experiences. This study found that student global mindedness following participation in activities based on transformative learning theory was significantly higher compared to their global mindedness prior to engaging in the activities.

           Transformative Learning in Cyberspace
    • Authors: Shantanu Tilak, Michael Glassman, Irina Kuznetcova, Joshua Peri, Qiannan Wang, Ziye Wen, Amanda Walling

Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
Direct instruction (PowerPoint presentations, lectures) often imposes hierarchical classroom structures where the teachers are considered experts, imparting knowledge to passive learners. However, the emergence of tools like Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) encourages the creation of democratic learning environments. We hypothesize that these tools lead to higher degrees of civil discourse within the classroom and create transformative learning trajectories for students, allowing them to create shared purpose to incite social change. By comparing reflectivity displayed in weekly students’ blogging assignments in a classroom using an MUVE (Second Life), and one using direct instruction, we sought to gauge the effect MUVEs had on students’ reflectivity with the passage of time. Results indicated that MUVEs facilitated more critical reflection and transformative learning trajectories as compared to direct instruction frameworks.

Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
Between 2005 and 2017 yielded fertile ground for research studies and articles about transformative learning and the arts within the field of adult education. The main questions this article seeks to answer are: What art forms are being used for transformative learning, how are they being used, and with what effect' The article begins by establishing the rationale for Artistic Ways of Knowing and gives a brief summary of the topic. The remainder of the article focuses on transformative learning and is organized around a variety of artistic categories. The conclusion includes critical reflections and suggestions for further applications of this topic, through research, programs, and policy. The overall goal for this literature review is to serve as a foundational source, to gather the research on this topic together, and to provide a springboard for future research in this area.

  • Teaching for Transformation: Master of Social Work Students Identify
Teaching Approaches That Made a Difference
    • Authors: Thecla Damianakis, Betty Barrett, Beth Archer-Kuhn, Patricia Samson, Sumaiya Matin, Christine Ahern
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
Transformative learning captures the process by which students engage in their learning, experience a change in perspective, of themselves or society, and then enact their new understanding. The purpose of this 4-year, four-cohort study was to identify the transformative learning experiences of Master of Social Work students and specific student engagement strategies they felt made a difference in preparing them for professional practice. Six focus groups (n = 40) were conducted using established focus group methodology. All focus groups were audio recorded, professionally transcribed verbatim, and subject to qualitative content analysis. Students identified six themes in student engagement strategies that facilitated their transformative learning, including transformative aspects of the curriculum, experiences with peers, qualities in their relationships with faculty that fostered critical reflection, a sense of identity, and mentoring. This study will help educators better identify teaching strategies to engage students in their personal and professional transformative learning.

  • Transforming Personal Narratives: An Evaluation of a Songwriting Workshop
           for Rural Women
    • Authors: Wendy Madsen
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
The purpose of this article was to evaluate the contribution to the social and emotional well-being of rural women of a 3-day songwriting workshop. Six participants wrote songs and performed these locally and at the Women of the World Festival. Guided by narrative inquiry and transformative learning theory, this case study included data from reflective journals, one-on-one interviews, and written songs. Vignettes of the women’s key life moments were constructed and analyzed thematically. Four themes were identified: the importance and influence of personal experiences on songwriting, learning from process and one another, intrapersonal benefits, and interpersonal benefits. The article argued songwriting workshops provide opportunities for participants to reflect on experiences and to transform their worldviews. That is, songs and the songwriting process can help participants to restory their lives and enhance their sense of social and emotional well-being.

  • On Disruption and Construction, Reflection and Reorganization in
Psychotherapist Development: A Taxonomy of Transformative Learning
           Outcomes
    • Authors: C. Edward Watkins
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
The beginning period of psychotherapist development has been conceptually and empirically identified as the most difficult and potentially problematic. The budding therapist is struggling to define a therapist identity, settle into the role of being a “helper,” and come to grips with being a helper who can “heal.” That struggle, I contend, is at its core a transformative learning process that involves developing a guiding vision of oneself as therapist, where the shift from becoming to being is made reality. In what follows, I examine transformative learning theory as a framework for enhancing our understanding about the beginning period of therapist development. The specific question that I consider is: What transformative learning outcomes occur for the beginning psychotherapist in the process of developing a therapist identity' I draw on and analogize from Hoggan’s typology of transformative learning outcomes in providing an answer to that question.

  • “I Guess I’ll Have to Bring It”: Examining the Construction and
           Outcomes of a Social Justice–Oriented Service-Learning Partnership
    • Authors: Christa S. Bialka, Stacey Havlik, Gina Mancini, Helene Marano
Abstract: Journal of Transformative Education, Ahead of Print.
In a 2012 issue of The Journal of Transformative Education, Tharp stressed the need for more research regarding the praxis of diversity and critical service learning. In response, this qualitative case study investigated how a service-learning experience supported university and school students in their exploration of ableism, defined as the systematic discrimination and exclusion of individuals who have disabilities. Additionally, this research used transformative learning as a lens to examine whether the partnership described in this case could be categorized as critical. Findings revealed that the praxis of coursework and the partnership played a pivotal role in illuminating ableism, the partnership provided insight into intersectional issues of social justice, and all participants engaged with the concept of ableism. This article explores how the partnership achieved the aims of critical service learning, addresses where it fell short, and considers the implications for service-learning experiences designed to address ableism. Finally, this article offers a novel way to consider how critical service learning, ableism awareness, and transformative learning can be used in tandem to address social justice.
