  • Effect of individual career counseling on psychological distress: impact
           of career intervention components, working alliance, and career indecision
           
    • Abstract: Abstract This study examined the impact of intervention components, working alliance, and career indecision on the change in psychological distress during the career counseling processes. Participants were 111 university students who received an average of 3.19 sessions of naturally occurring career counseling. Results indicated that: (a) written exercises in-session, individualized feedback and working alliance significantly predict change in psychological distress; and (b) effects of both career intervention components and working alliance on psychological distress were mediated by change in career indecision.

  • Longitudinal relations among economic deprivation, work volition, and
           academic satisfaction: a psychology of working perspective
    • Abstract: Abstract Using the Psychology of Working Theory as a guide, the goal of this study was to examine the longitudinal relations of economic deprivation to work volition and work volition to academic satisfaction among college students. We sampled 1508 students and surveyed them at three time points over a 6-month period. We found that economic deprivation partially predicted work volition over time, and work volition consistently predicted academic satisfaction over time. These results have theoretical implications as well as relevance to personnel working with economically marginalized college students.

  • Development and validation of the Dynamic Career Scale (DCS): a
           psychodynamic conceptualization of career adjustment
    • Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this research was to develop and validate a new instrument, the Dynamic Career Scale (DCS), which measures four different modes of functioning in facing career failures and challenges (mania, envy, manic reparation, and true reparation) according to Klein’s object relations theory. Two studies were respectively conducted on adult working participants (N = 260, Study 1) and newly-qualified psychologists enrolled in a career research program (N = 196, Study 2), to assess reliability, factorial validity and convergent evidence of validity. Overall, findings suggest adequate psychometric properties of the DCS and its potential usefulness to grasp unconscious processes affecting career adjustment.

  • A tripartite model of program evaluation: implications for effective
           career services and workforce development
    • Abstract: Abstract Empirical and conceptual literature on career and workforce development increasingly cites the importance of connections between policy, research and practice domains. Yet, few if any models inform such collaborations. In the proposed Tripartite Model of Program Evaluation, the inter-play between these three key stakeholder groups is conceptualized within the paradigm of program evaluation in relation to best practices. A case example of an actual application of the model conducted in Turkey is also provided to illustrate the Tripartite Model.

  • Job crafting by students who work and study
    • Abstract: Abstract Informed by a self-regulatory perspective, we tested a model (N = 233) in which job (e.g., autonomy), person (e.g., motivation), and study characteristics (e.g., engagement) predicted student job crafting, which, in turn, predicted work-study conflict and facilitation. Job, person, and study characteristics predicted task (46% of variance), cognitive (56%), and relational crafting (25%), and cognitive and relational crafting predicted greater work-study facilitation (53%). When students proactively modify their work environment, this is likely to assist them at work as well as facilitate their study life. Developing job crafting skills in students should improve both work and study functioning.

  • The mediating effect of well-being between generalized self-efficacy and
           vocational identity development
    • Abstract: Abstract This study analyzed the mediating effect of well-being between generalized self-efficacy and vocational identity development in a sample of 724 final year bachelor’s students studying in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Results from a parallel mediation analysis indicated that generalized self-efficacy was indirectly related to vocational identity development through its relationship with four of the six components of psychological well-being (autonomy, positive relations with others, purpose in life and self-acceptance) as well as the cognitive (life satisfaction) and affective (positive affect and absence of negative affect) components of subjective well-being. The implications of these results for interventions and future research are discussed.

  • An investigation of gender differences in Holland’s circumplex model of
           vocational personality types in South Africa
    • Abstract: Abstract We investigated (a) the fit and structural equivalence of Holland’s model of six vocational personality types in a sample of South African men (n = 139) and women (n = 268) using the South African Career Interest Inventory, and (b) mean score differences for men and women on these types. The results supported the fit and structural similarity of Holland’s model of vocational personality types for men and women but showed that the model fit the data better for women. The largest differences in the mean scores occurred on the Realistic scale. Implications of the results are presented.

  • Vocational identity of at-risk emerging adults and its relationship with
           individual characteristics
    • Abstract: Abstract Vocational identity is a prerequisite for enhancing societal inclusion of at-risk emerging adults. School curricula and rebound programs need insights into individual differences of these youths to effectively foster their vocational identity. Identifying three aspects of vocational identity, a questionnaire study among at-risk emerging adults in The Netherlands (N = 996) examined the relationship between clusters of demographic, personality, self-sufficiency, self-competence, and school engagement characteristics and vocational identity performing blockwise entry analyses. Largest proportions of variance were explained by personality traits and, to a lesser extent, motivation, resilience, and valuing school outcome. These malleable characteristics offer opportunities for interventions.

  • The effects of middle-school career intervention on students’ career
           readiness
    • Abstract: Abstract The study examines the effectiveness of a career intervention in middle schools. The intervention was organized in eight 45-minute-long group sessions. A quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design was applied, with 120 students in the experimental group and 156 in the control group. Small- to medium-size effects were found in terms of reduction of lack of career information and an increase in independence in career decision-making. The observed effects were stable across gender and for high and low school achievers.

  • Antecedents and consequents of student satisfaction in higher
           technical-vocational education: evidence from Brazil
    • Abstract: Abstract This article proposes a model of antecedents and consequences of student satisfaction in Higher Technical-Vocational Education (HTVE) colleges. To validate the model, a survey was conducted with 505 students enrolled in Brazilian HTVE colleges. Structural equation modelling was used to investigate the constructs and their relations. Results indicate that the critical antecedents to student satisfaction are service quality, learning outcomes, employability, image and perceived value. Practical implications include potential curriculum revision aligned with the needs of the labour market and finding ways to monitor and improve the quality of the HTVE system, taking students’ views and employability outcomes into consideration.

  • Using the hope-centered career inventory (HCCI)—Italian version with
           healthcare professionals
    • Abstract: Abstract To address twenty-first century challenges, Niles, Amundson, and Neault (2011) developed the Hope-Centered Model of Career Development (HCMCD) from which they derived the Hope-Centered Career Inventory (including domains of hope, self-reflection, self-clarity, visioning, goal setting/planning, implementing, and adapting). The current study tests the psychometric properties, structural, convergent, and discriminant validity of the Italian version of the HCCI. Confirmatory factor analyses in a sample of 536 healthcare professionals supported the validity of the measure among healthcare professional, confirmed the model of hope-centered career competencies, and reinforced the importance of hope for an effective career self-management in the current work context.

  • Enacted mind, enminded and encultured action in vocational counseling:
           contextual action theory
    • Abstract: Abstract Vocational counseling is rooted in a dualistic Cartesian conception of life: the separation of mind and body. In contrast, neuropsychology and cognitive psychology provide a non-Cartesian approach, emphasizing the notion of enacted mind. Recent developments in vocational psychology, such as the constructionist and relational approaches, systems theory, and calls for agency, integrate such thinking. For example, contextual action theory offers a comprehensive approach to enacted mind and enminded and encultured action. Additionally, empirical research and counseling practice offer tools not only to fulfill the criteria required by a non-Cartesian approach but bring career counseling practice closer to human experience.

  • Work–study boundary congruence: its relationship with student
           well-being and engagement
    • Abstract: Abstract We tested a work–study congruence model, in which student role congruence was related to student engagement and well-being via work–study conflict and facilitation. We found (251 working students; 70% female; mean age 24.68 years) greater congruence to be associated with better engagement and well-being, and conflict and facilitation to mediate partially between congruence and well-being, explaining 37.5% of the variance in engagement and 41.1% in well-being. The study demonstrates that the role congruence approach is useful to understand the experiences of working students and points to how interventions might assist students who struggle with multiple competing roles.

  • LGB identity and career decision-making self-efficacy among sexual
           minority college students
    • Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of LGB identity on career decision-making self-efficacy. This study utilizes a mediation model that incorporates a personal (self-compassion) and an environmental (social support) factor as key model variables. Mediating effects of social support and self-compassion were found. Specifically, LGB identity was associated with social support, which in turn was linked with increased self-compassion, resulting in greater self-efficacy in career decision-making.

  • Social cognitive factors of science, technology, engineering, and
           mathematics career interests
    • Abstract: Abstract Guided by the social cognitive career theory (SCCT), this study examines the factors influencing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career interests and the career goals of college students in Taiwan (N = 320). A two-step modeling approach was used. First, the measurement part of the model was examined followed by a test of the full structural equation model. Both the measurement models and the path models were confirmed, suggesting a good fit of SCCT for Taiwanese college students. The correlations among SCCT constructs were in the expected directions. Implications for professional counseling and research are discussed.

  • Children’s occupational knowledge: a conceptual framework and
           measure
    • Abstract: Abstract We describe a conceptual framework for and introduce a measure to examine children’s knowledge about occupations and the world of work. The framework comprises three aspects of occupational knowledge: identifying occupations from pictures (occupational picture naming), naming and explaining occupations (occupational vocabulary), and explaining the essence of work (occupational comprehension). Scale development included exploratory and confirmatory phases. The Cronbach alpha for the subscales ranged between 0.70 and 0.90. Age differences on scales were compared between 3- and 8-year-old children (N = 101). The older children demonstrated greater occupational knowledge than the youngest in all aspects. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

  • Taking a test is telling stories: a narrative approach to interest
           inventories
    • Abstract: Abstract Interest inventories are essential tools in the field of career counseling, and their usability can be enhanced based on narrative-based assessments and interventions from constructivist approaches. This paper aims to present a systematized procedure to facilitate narrative interventions based on the results of interest inventories. A conceptual relation between narrative career counseling and therapeutic assessment is proposed, as well as an explanation of the psychological processes involved in the response to self-report tests. Two cases are presented to illustrate the application of this procedure. The limitations of this study and directions for future research are also discussed.

  • A critical comparison of factors affecting science and technology
           students’ entrepreneurial intention: a tale of two genders
    • Abstract: Abstract This study assesses the influence of gender differences in the formation of entrepreneurial intention. Specifically, we investigate how culture and gender influence factors responsible for entrepreneurial intention development. A sample of 414 science and technology students from the world’s fourth most prominent entrepreneurial university completed surveys. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the data. Results show that the influence of social learning on entrepreneurial intention was mediated both by personality traits and entrepreneurial knowledge, whereas the effect of university-level determinants on entrepreneurial intention was mediated only through entrepreneurial knowledge. Strong support for the moderating role of gender was found.
