  • Facilitating Racial Equity: Evaluating a Leadership Workshop Series for
           School Social Workers

      Abstract: This article provides an overview of a leadership training workshop series designed to provide professional development to Pre-K through 12th grade school social workers about racial equity and leadership. The series' objectives included promoting social workers’ understanding of and obligation to facilitating racial equity in schools, analyzing educational data through a racial equity lens, conceptualizing school social workers as influencers in addressing racial inequities in schools, and collaborating with school professionals of various disciplines to practice and implement evidence-based approaches for facilitating racial equity in schools. The authors conducted five workshops that were developed based on state school social work practice standards, school systems data, scholarly literature, and social work values and ethics, and used a pretest/ posttest, workshop surveys, and a follow-up survey one year later to measure change in participants’ knowledge, self-readiness in assessing, facilitating, and leading change in school settings, and self-perceptions as leaders versus support staff. Survey findings are discussed in relation to participants’ perceived identity in the school environment, knowledge of racial equity, perceived readiness in assessing and facilitating racial equity in school cultures, perceived identity in the school environment, and possible barriers to promoting a racially equitable school culture.

  • Ethical and Methodological Challenges of Implementing Social Work Survey
           Research in Schools: A Perspective from the Suburban United States

      Abstract: Many researchers view schools as the ideal setting to study social and behavioral interventions with youth. As trusted community-based organizations, schools are natural partners for social work researchers who focus on bridging the needs of the most vulnerable populations. Awareness and consideration of critical issues related to conducting research within the school system enables social work researchers to plan and conduct rigorous studies while developing sustainable partnerships with schools. This article outlines key ethical and methodological challenges of conducting school-based survey research, and shares lessons learned and recommendations from the evaluation of a dating violence prevention curriculum implemented in U.S. suburban high schools.

  • Teen Depression, Stories of Hope and Health: A Promising Universal School
           Climate Intervention for Middle School Youth

      Abstract: This study describes the delivery of the Teen Depression: Stories of Health and Healing (TDSHH), a brief school-based depression awareness delivered for middle school students. The main objectives of the proposed evaluation were to examine the effects of TDSHH on middle school health students in the areas of knowledge about depression, willingness to seek help from adults and belief that adults can help. Two Chicago suburban middle schools agreed to be part of the TDSHH intervention study. In both schools, a pre/post-test wait-list control quasi-experimental design was used. Each student in the study (total N=223) completed a questionnaire that incorporated a depression knowledge scale created by the EL team and two additional standardized scales, the Help-Seeking Acceptability at School Scale (Wyman et al., 2008) and the Adult Help for Suicidal Youth Scale (Schmeelk-Cone et al., 2012). Data from the pilot indicates that TDSHH students showed statistically significant gains on understanding depression symptoms; identifying strategies students could use to improve their mental health; and increasing positive attitudes toward help seeking with adults at school.

  • Tailoring Supports to Youth in Schools: One Approach to Identifying Needs
           and Targeting Intervention

      Abstract: Youth experiences intersect along their race, gender, language and socioeconomic status, schools must consider the intersectionality in order to improve outcomes. The current study sought to understand if, and to what extent, different clusters of youth in one large urban high school perceive their psychosocial behaviors as well as social and interpersonal skills. Cross-sectional survey data from 1,164 high school youth were collected using four valid scales: Internalizing Behaviors, Externalizing Behaviors, Peer Relationships, and Social Skills. The analytic strategy was twofold. Cluster analysis was used to form homogeneous clusters of the 1,147 complete responses based on a combination of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, English language learner status, and gender. Next, a multivariate analysis of variance (MANCOVA) was used to compare cluster profiles on the aforementioned measures. The cluster analysis revealed a 5-factor solution.   • The use of data in decision making for school-based social work

      Abstract: Industries are increasingly taking advantage of the access provided in the digital age to use data to inform business and practice-based decision making. The profession of social work has recently called for social workers to become more data-driven, through its Grand Challenge to leverage technology such as data-driven decision making for social good. School-Based Social Workers, who often work in educational contexts that demand they collect and use data are being asked to figure out ways to engage data to help promote evidence-informed practices and process level changes. Using a scoping review, this article looks at the state of the current literature on how this process is evolving. This information can help set the stage for a framework for the systematic application of data in social work settings.

  • It’s About Time: Initial Findings From a Feasibility Study of a
           Time-Study Tool for School Social Workers in Michigan

      Abstract: Starting in late Summer of 2015, the two authors began collaborating on the pilot testing of a school social work (SSW) time-study tool with a sample of SSW in suburban Detroit (n=9). This article details the path towards the development of the time-study tool, drawing from the extant literature on workload and caseload issues in related special education fields, and resulting in the time-study tool that was first piloted with SSW in 2015-2016. Initial data from year one of the two-year 2015-2017 pilot project is shared in this article, along with qualitative data based on interviews with the SSW in the project, as well as reflections by the two authors on the implications of the work in this first pilot year. This article describes in detail the background for this project, the procedures followed, the initial results after year one, and how these findings informed plans for year two.

  • Data-Driven Recommendations for Promoting Collaboration Among School
           Security Personnel and School Social Workers in the United States

      Abstract: In response to recent incidents of school violence in the United States over the last two decades, there has been a nationwide increase in the use of school security personnel in today’s schools. Concurrently, school social work practice continues to grow as a subspecialty of social work that provides crucial services to youth in school. Despite this increase in demand across both fields of practice, and an overlap in professional interests, current research suggests that we know little about how school social workers interact with and perceive school security personnel within their schools, and ultimately how such interaction and collaboration among professionals might influence school safety. This study aims to address this gap in the literature by exploring survey responses from a nation-wide sample of school social workers who report working in schools with different types of security personnel (n = 151). Findings suggest that increased interaction and positive perceptions of school security personnel are positively associated with perceived overall safety in school. Additionally, qualitative responses suggest a considerable percentage of school social workers feel that school security personnel might benefit from additional training and increased accessibility and collaboration. The purpose of this paper is to provide timely implications for school policing using the perspective of school social workers with the goal of promoting safety and collaboration in schools.

  • Too Hard to Find with Too Little Time: What School Social Workers Want in
           Online Resources for Evidence-Based Practice

      Abstract: School mental health practitioners, including social workers, are mandated through federal, state, and professional entities to provide evidence-based practices to students. Nevertheless, rates of use of evidence-based practices among mental health professionals in schools remain low, even as knowledge about effective practices increases. This study aimed to further knowledge about how to promote and support the use of evidence-based practices among school practitioners using online technology. School social workers attending a summer professional development event took part in focus groups exploring (a) their current perceptions of evidence-based practices, (b) their experiences finding evidence-based practice information online, and (c) their preferences for the formatting and content of online resources. Participants described a willingness to use evidence-based practice, efforts to find information, and difficulties encountered with online sources. Preferences for readily available, searchable, brief, and understandable online information were expressed. Implications for meeting the needs of school social workers with online resources are discussed.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS): A School
           Social Work Perspective

      Abstract: This article reviews research about the effects of traumatic events on the functioning of children and adolescents in a school setting. Interventions with traumatic stressors have been shown to work best when they incorporate multiple elements such as policy change, teacher and administration buy-in, and parent meetings. One intervention, Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS), has been successfully developed and implemented by school social workers, teachers, and parents to address a range of traumatic stressors. This article will review CBITS training and examine how it could be used to address traumatic stressors in children and adolescents to lower future risk for trauma and adverse outcomes. Implications for the application of trauma-informed practice will be discussed. More specifically, how this training can be adapted to meet the specific needs of a school social worker’s unique environment, considering time constraints, student population, and school administration, faculty and staff.

      Abstract: With the Educational Childhood Longitudinal Kindergarten Cohort class of 2011 (ECLSK-2011) database, I used propensity score matching and a longitudinal multilevel model to evaluate how 4970 kindergarteners in public (assigned public, charter, or magnet) and private (religious, non-religious private) schools, who were matched on a host of covariates, differed on a psychometrically sound self-control construct from fall 2010 to spring 2012. I found no statistically significant difference in self-control scores between private and public-school children. I discuss possible more effective and equitable mechanisms for improving student self-control, as well as suggesting guidance for future research on this topic.

      Abstract: The Development of a Social Work Program for anIslamic Day School in Southwestern OntarioAbstractThis article examines the evolution of a social work program for an Islamic Day School in London, Ontario, Canada. The Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration (MRCSSI), and London Islamic School (LIS) developed A Safe Space for Children (SPC) school social work program after extensive community consultation and feedback from leadership and school teachers revealed the need for mental health supports for students. A program implementation and evaluation design was developed by the MRCSSI in collaboration with the LIS and accepted by school administration and community stakeholders. The overarching objectives were to provide students with counselling services; develop school wide interventions, connect students and their families to mental health community resources while also providing ongoing professional development opportunities to teachers on issues relating to student mental health issues. The development of SPC its rooted in literature that reveals that this population is vulnerable to the stigma related to mental health, issues of acculturation, racism, and discrimination. The establishment of a social work program situated in a faith-based school that offers an overall understanding of cultural values and spirituality, aligns with best practices in social work. The project was grounded in a participatory democracy approach integrated with the civil society perspective, constructivist and critical race theoretical frameworks that guided the assessment and program design.Key Words: Canada, Children, Islam, Mental Health, Muslim, Participatory Democracy, School Social Work

  • Parents’ Perception of School Violence, Awareness of Risk Factors, and
           School Safety: An Ecological Perspective

      Abstract: Parents’ concerns about school violence and school safety have been documented in many research studies (Diaz-Vicario & Sallan, 2017; Hundeloh & Hess, 2003). Understanding parents’ perceptions of school safety can be an important issue that will guide teachers (Bosworth, Ford, & Hernandaz, 2011), administrators and staff (Heisterkamp, & Fleming, 2011), and legislators (Elliott, 2015) in setting strategies to enhance school safety and school climate. The purpose of this study is to identify factors that contribute to parents’ views of school safety. Based on existing literature, this study developed a model of one main endogenous variable -- feelings of instructional safety -- and seven additional exogenous and endogenous variables -- awareness of bulling behavior, awareness of school violence, parent visits school, communicating perspective, experience with violence, knowledge of risk, resources and school measures. A total of 403 parents who reside in the southern part of Illinois participated in the survey. Path analysis with exploratory modifications was used to examine the study model and the study hypotheses. The study findings suggested parents’ visits to school and parents’ experience with violence had statistically significant direct effects on their awareness of school violence, which had a significant direct effect on parents’ feelings of instructional safety. Although exploratory, this study provided important insights on school violence, school safety and school climate, and implications for future research in this area are discussed.

  • The Use of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy in Chinese Schools: A
           Qualitative Analysis of Practitioner Perceptions

      Abstract: Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is a strengthens-based, future-oriented approach that has received promising results over the past decade. Literature on SFBT has demonstrated the approach’s ability to meet the unique needs of various client populations while adapting to a variety of service delivery settings. Schools are a specific setting in which SFBT has been successfully utilized in the United States. With the growing popularity of SFBT, countries outside to the United States are beginning to implement SFBT in their schools. This article explored perceptions of the use of SFBT in schools amongst Chinese mental health practitioners. A survey was conducted by the Chinese government and included 134 participants. The qualitative results showed the Chinese practitioners have a strong interest in the strengths-based approach and feel that SFBT is culturally-adaptive to the Chinese student population. However, the practitioners are not confidently able to utilize SFBT techniques. The Chinese practitioners related the lack of confidence to a lack of SFBT focused training and professional develop opportunities. As SFBT research and practice continues to grow in China, the need for affordable, accessible SFBT trainings and supervision grows as well.

  • Socio-ecological Factors Associated with Adolescents’ Psychological
           Well-being: A multilevel analysis

      Abstract: Purpose: Supports and stressors across different ecological systems affect adolescents’ perceptions of psychological well-being. The purpose of this study is to analyze how social support, school experiences, and socio-economic factors relate to psychological well-being among adolescents. Furthermore, our study explores how family income shapes the relationship between social supports and well-being.Method: Multilevel linear regression models were applied to a sample of 19,767 middle and high school students, with students serving as Level 1 and schools as Level 2.Results: Students reporting more support from parents, friends, teachers, and neighbors and better school engagement perceive better psychological well-being. Furthermore, family income moderates the relationship between teacher support and adolescents’ psychological well-being. Implications for social work practice are discussed.Conclusion: Social support plays an important role in promoting adolescents’ psychological well-being. Teacher support is associated with better psychological well-being for all students, and this relationship is strongest for students from higher income families.

  • School social work in northern Uganda in a post-conflict context: A case
           of Anaka Foundation

      Abstract: Anaka Foundation is an indigenous NGO that is operating in northern Uganda in response to the post-war development challenges. Anaka recently concluded a school social work project, a specialization which is common in Western countries, to attempt to improve the learning environment of vulnerable children selected from nine government aided primary schools. This school social work pilot project was supported with a grant from AfriCarinthia, an organization from Austria. Relevant social work theories were applied and significant systems in the learning environment of the children were targeted through different interventions. A mixed before-and-after evaluation approach was used to arrive at comparison of outcomes. The findings, amongst others, indicate that school social work had a significant positive impact on the children and the key systems involved. There were improvements in educational quality, access, and engagement; and thus should be pursued by the Uganda government, and indeed by other developing countries attempting to improve the education services to their citizens.

  • School Social Workers: A Call to Action in Support of Human Rights

      Abstract: The global climate of extremism and direct attacks on marginalized groups such as LGBTQI persons, Muslims, women, immigrants, and refugees creates a need at this critical juncture for school social workers to ground themselves in the international definition of social work, which defines social work as a human rights profession. While there are many challenges to upholding human rights conventions across the world, a human rights framework can assist school social workers in promoting human rights and advocating for vulnerable and marginalized populations. In the context of global migration, children can be especially vulnerable to human rights violations. A human rights approach calls on school social workers to practice in a way that allows for maximum participation of service users in decisions that affect them, addresses power differentials, considers the social context, and privileges an intersectional, strengths based, trauma informed, and recovery oriented approach.

      Abstract: We are pleased to announce our second issues of the International Journal of School Social Work (IJSSW). With its publication, IJSSW continues our focus on providing open access to evidence based and peer reviewed literature to school social workers around the world. As social workers, our practice is inherently global regardless of where we practice and by creating ways to share information across borders. When we practice from a global social work perspective, we appreciate diversity and understand global issues that face the students and families we serve. In particular, this understanding comes with special attention to differences in privilege, and access to resources as a result of that privilege. As we do work across national borders, the importance of both evidence-based practice and the development of local knowledge have been magnified by the increasing demand to demonstrate student outcomes as well as the expanding international scope of school social work practice. This journal will allow school social workers from around the world greater access to current research, and for the exchange of resources, knowledge, and perspectives.
