  • An Exploration of Classroom Practices in Secondary Schools

    • Authors: Mehnaz Tazeen Choudhury
      Pages: 1 - 10
Abstract: This study was undertaken in the secondary schools of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Students from Bengali medium schools of Bangladesh do not achieve even a minimal amount of proficiency in English even after completing high school. Moreover, they are seen to remain teacher dependent even at tertiary level. Learner autonomy is seen as a crucial need of the time in the context of Bangladesh. Either classroom practices or teacher beliefs, or both are responsible for this state of affairs. Therefore, it became imperative to research to find out the classroom practices of English language teachers and see whether they were autonomy supportive. This was exploratory qualitative research, and the participants were class VII English language teachers from five government and non-government Bengali medium schools. Classroom observations and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. Findings of this study have implications for teacher training programs and how they need to be redesigned to bring about a change in teacher beliefs and approaches.

  • Mentoring at Tertiary Level Education: A Tool to Exceed Students'
           Problems

    • Authors: Afroza Aziz Suchana
      Pages: 11 - 17
Abstract: The study examines the role of mentoring to surpass the problems of tertiary level students. It includes both mentors’ and mentees’ views on mentoring. It explores how mentoring helps the mentor find out students’ problems and to provide them with emotional and instrumental support. Adapting the qualitative method, this research includes case studies of three different students of a private university of Bangladesh who had been facing various problems and shows how they overcame their obstacles. It exposes the difficulties and challenges of one fresher, one female and one minority student. The study applies both formal and informal aspects of mentoring. It also includes an interview of their mentors. Findings indicate that through this process, mentors may find students’ problems and help them go over and inspire them with a vision of the future. The study finds that mentoring contributes to students’ academic achievement and social integration. It also states that through mentoring students’ frustration can be transformed into motivation.

  • Construction of Home, Nation and Identity in Rohinton Mistry’s Tales
           from Firozsha Baag

    • Authors: Md Abu Shahid Abdullah
      Pages: 18 - 24
Abstract: Rohinton Mistry is one of the central figures of the Indian diaspora involved in the task of constructing alternative narratives of national identity. His texts articulate a new conception of the nation by problematising the stable and unitary configurations of national-cultural identity. Mistry’s experience and awareness of the complex tensions of his cultural and geographical location in the diaspora are evident in Tales from Firozsha Baag. Mistry implies that because the Parsi culture is constituted by heteroglossia, there is no such thing as a ‘purely’ Parsi identity. In destabilising notions of a self-enclosed Parsi identity, he goes for inserting the ‘other’ into his Parsi narratives: for instance, Gajra, the Marathi maid, in “Auspicious Occasion”; Francis, the Christian man who does odd-jobs, in “One Sunday”; and Jaakaylee, the Catholic Goan ayah, in “The Ghost of Firozsha Baag”. “Swimming Lessons” is the only story set entirely outside the Parsi area of the Baag and in fact outside India. We move from a closed and homogenous cultural system to finally a transgressive ground where the borders between cultures are so fluid that there can no longer be any stable conception of national essences.

  • Sex, Desire and Subjectivity in Paulo Coelho’s Eleven Minutes

    • Authors: Gian Chand, N S Chandel
      Pages: 25 - 31
Abstract: ‘Desire’ is a sense of longing or hoping for a person, object, or outcome. The same thought is expressed by emotions such as ‘craving.’ When a person desires something or someone, his sense of longing is excited by the enjoyment or the thought of the item or person. He wants to take actions to obtain his or her goal. ‘Subjectivity’ on the other hand is a philosophical concept related to consciousness, personhood, reality and truth. It applies to an individual who possesses conscious experiences, such as perspective, feelings, beliefs and desires. This study is aimed to present sex, desire, and subjectivity of the protagonist Maria in Paulo Coelho’s novel Eleven Minutes. Maria is born in a humble family in a small village of Brazil and dreams of an adventurous life but ends up as a prostitute. It is only after meeting with Ralf Hart, a painter that she understands the meaning of love, beauty, sex and life. She falls in love with him and realizes that he is the person who sees her inner light and wants not her body but her company.

  • Role of Fantasy in Intellectual Development of Children

    • Authors: Ndayikengurukiye Eliphase
      Pages: 32 - 37
Abstract: This paper discusses the concept of fantasy. There is much in the word of fiction today so that the number of writers on imagination is increasing. After people have come to realize that romance is serving as much as a sea in the intellectual development of children, most of them have started to encourage their children to like more reading fantasy books. Some parents have even made it a great deal by deciding to build a small home library of fantasy books for children.
The paper’s purpose is to discuss the role of fantasy literature in children’s intellectual development by including different forms of fantasy and its various advantages. The latter include creativity, entertainment, imagination and language skills improvement, the schematic knowledge, enjoyment, strategies applied for problem-solving, knowing the do’s and don’ts of the society, etc. Some Critics have made assertions on children’s ways of learning. This paper incorporates some of the claims and discusses them with some excerpts of illustrative stories related to fantasy.
Enhanced by the fact that fantasy is the roadmap to the child thinking ability development, the paper will finally show why parents should motivate their children to get interested in fiction, which has a lot to do with children’s learning process.

  • The Cause of the Dalits: An Analysis of Kalyan Rao’s Untouchable
           Spring

    • Authors: G Varadarajulu
      Pages: 38 - 42
Abstract: During a time of advancement in science, innovation, and culture, no noteworthy change has been found in the lives of Dalits (untouchables) in India. Social, monetary, and cultural existence of Dalits has not changed since the pre-historic. Dalit literary movement and development, which had begun in the early part of the twentieth century, has been a branch of the abuse of Dalits by the upper caste positions. Through literary works, they have been attempting to protect their sense of pride, identity, personality, and heritage/ legacy of their locale. Untouchable Spring by Kalyan Rao is a novel that also can be called as a verifiable archive that represents the situation of Dalits in a post-independence time. The novelist G. KalyanRao, a Dalit, who trusts and believes in the progressive philosophy and revolutionary ideology, depicts the lives of Dalit Christians and their mortification in the hands of caste Hindus. It likewise features how they “find their mankind through resistance.” The paper goes for giving historiography of the denied more than several generations and ages for the rise of powerful voice in subaltern writing.

  • Decolonising English Teaching in India: Remarks on English as All-Indian
           Elite Language (EAEL)

    • Authors: E Dileep
      Pages: 43 - 50
Abstract: This paper is a humble attempt to share some nagging thoughts in the mind of an English teacher. In consonance with the desire for sharing, the paper often resorts to a personal and intimate style. It argues for an interdisciplinary approach and indispensable interfacing between teaching language and literature. The paper proposes that decolonizing English teaching takes different forms in different social contexts. It contends that, in India, English language teaching should be oriented towards reaching the grassroots learners to fulfill the project of decolonizing at present. In literature, it is argued, that native literature should be given prominence, and the texts in English translations can be used to counteract colonial alienation. Offering a critique of double linguistic hegemony of English and Sanskrit, the paper argues that the teachers of English have a responsibility in rehabilitating native or regional literature. It is suggested that a paradigm shift in the importance given to translations is needed in carrying out the decolonizing project.

  • Mapping the Boundaries: J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace and Slow Man as
           Modern Cosmopolitan Fiction

    • Authors: Sheeba Anjum, Nupur Tandon
      Pages: 51 - 56
Abstract: The paper aims to investigate J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace and Slow Man in terms of cosmopolitan concepts of shame, imaginative sympathy and its limits. Coetzee’s novels encourage a ‘distinctive individualism’ which reflects the insufficiency of shame, guilt and sympathy as indicative of cosmopolitan philosophy. In this regard, a selective theoretical approach is adopted, which suggest that Coetzee’s fiction is significant and promotes a faith-driven association between the cosmopolitan subject and the ‘other’. The presence of others in his novels makes it cosmopolitan, even though the central subject often gets humiliated and excluded by the ‘other’. The subject’s shame in both the novels makes them experience isolation and their problematic association with the other, which has a flagged presence in Coetzee’s prose. The present paper attempts to argue that both the novels end on a different note proving that cosmopolitanism has different facets- positive as well as negative and also challenges Coetzee’s readers to identify their cosmopolitan limits.

  • Girish Karnad's Hayavadana - A Setting for Sacred and Profane

    • Authors: R Kalidasan, R K Jaishree Karthiga
      Pages: 57 - 61
Abstract: Hayavadana, a multiplex play, offers various binary themes for discussion. By combining the indigenous Yakshagana and the western Brechtian Epic theatre practices, Girish Karnad has created a unique theatre display, presenting it as a social and religious satire that point to the persistent pursuit of the humanity to achieve perfection. The plot and the sub-plot of the play get interlocked by raising questions on identity and the nature of reality. The dramatist intentionally effects a dynamic communication between the audience and the performance, noting that the audience too are not separate from such an existential predicament. This Verfremdungseffekt or the “alienation effect”, is achieved through a number of devices. One such device, apart from the folk-theatre motifs, is the philosophical survey of the concepts, ‘Sacred’ and the ‘Profane’. This paper ventures to show how these concepts add further investigation of the play.

  • The Cultural Silencing of LGBT Voices in India with Reference to Do the
           Needful: A Radio Play

    • Authors: M Abinaya Sudha, M Ashitha Varghese
      Pages: 65 - 68
Abstract: Culture deliberates the arts and philosophy, which are considered to be important for the development of civilization and mentality of the people. In a multicultural and multilingual country like India marginalisation of certain communities, including homosexual, is a significant problem that threads the fabric of our society. In modern society, gender and sexuality-based discrimination are witnessed all over the world. The term homosexuality has never gained social acceptance and has been treated down the ages as taboo subjects. Although sexual desires are a matter of instinctive behaviour, yet are controlled by social norms and morals. Therefore, heterosexuality is the only acceptable mode of relationship and is considered as a centre to our culture. The homosexual relationships are still stigmatized as unnatural and unacceptable in Indian social context and therefore often hidden under the shroud of privacy. Mahesh Dattani, an Indian writer, has chosen such taboo subjects and treated them with great confidence and sublimity to bring them from the boundary to the main stream. This paper focuses on the pathetic conditions of those who struggle between instinct and social culture concerning queer theory in the play DO THE NEEDFUL: A RADIO PLAY by Mahesh Dattani.

  • Exploring the Role of Edutainment through Sitcoms Inside Language
           Classrooms

    • Authors: M Devagishree, V David Arputha Raj
      Pages: 69 - 71
Abstract: Language is the primary source of communication through which we share our thoughts and ideas with others whereas on the other hand, it separates us from animals and makes us human beings. The English language is essential to the field of education because it is a primary language of press, in the research field and science. Language being global and to adapt to the present scenario in teaching language may seem quiet complex. Nevertheless, to prop interest and to simplify complications, situational comedies act as a medium to enrich language through not only words but expressions. This paper establishes views on teaching a language through the means of situational comedies, having implemented the cultural theory of schema where the schema is a generalized description or a conceptual system for understanding knowledge how it is represented and how it is used.
