  • The Role of Communicative Adaptability in Lowering Intercultural
Communication Apprehension of the Thai International College Students

    • Authors: Pair Sajampun, Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol
      Pages: 48 - 53
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of communicative adaptability (CA) in lowering intercultural communication apprehension (ICA) as well as exploring which aspects of CA that significantly contribute in lowering ICA among Thai international college students during interacting with a foreign instructor in a classroom. Participants in the study consist of 333 Thai college students who were studying at Assumption University, which is one of the leading private international universities in Thailand where all courses are taught in English. The data were collected at the end of the semester. Partial least squares regression is employed to analyze the relationship between all six aspects of CA (social experience, social composure, social confirmation, appropriate disclosure, articulation, and wit) and ICA. In addition, some characteristics of students including age, gender, student classification, grade point average, frequency of English Language used and frequency of enrollment are also included in the analysis. Overall, the findings of the study indicate that there are two aspects of CA: social composure and articulation; that are significantly associated with lowering ICA. Hence, this study confirms that the Thai sample students who are well equipped with social composure and articulation tend to experience less anxiety and feel more comfortable to communicate in English with foreigners particularly with their foreign instructors.

  • Paradigms from the Science of Learning: An Emerging Revolution in
           Education

    • Authors: Jay Somasundaram
      Pages: 1 - 14
Abstract: In the last few centuries, scientific break-throughs in the physical sciences delivered the industrial revolutions. It is now the turn of the human sciences, which are at the point of generating social revolutions. This paper posits that our scientific understanding of human learning has matured to a point that it provides clear guidelines on how to revolutionise education. The paper identifies and explores five key paradigms that are starting to revolutionise education: (1) Neuroplasticity, Cognitive Load Theory and Chunking are three critical discoveries that, blended together, describe how learning takes place; (2) the Theory of Flow shows how to make learning enjoyable; (3) there are two distinct modes of thinking; (4) cognition is integral with sensory/motor, emotional and social operations; and (5) neurobiological circuitry matures in a predictable pattern of sensitive periods. The paper then explores three implications of this revolution for education. Firstly, infancy and toddlerhood are critical periods of and for learning. Secondly, the science of learning can be systematically taught in schools, to ensure that all citizens become independent/ autonomous learners, capable of life-long learning. Universal higher education within affordable public expenditure is in our grasp. And thirdly, universities have the crucial responsibility of transforming themselves to best enable this social revolution in the wider society. This paper analyses evolving concepts to predict and propose a future – an ambitious task. Before concluding, the paper critically reflects on its analysis - its limitations and risks.

  • Developing a Scale to Measure Implementation of a Pedagogy

    • Authors: Judith C. Chavez, Miguela B. Napiere
      Pages: 15 - 21
Abstract: Teachers’ pedagogy is critically important in the educational experience of students. This investigation verified the constructs embedded in the themes that emerged in the students’ responses on the implementation of a pedagogy used by private institutions in the Philippines. This pedagogy is anchored on the four components namely: constructivism (Piaget, 1970), elements of understanding by design (Wiggins and McTighe, 2011), differentiated instruction (Tomlinson, 2000) and the 4-pronged approach covering the integration of Ignacian core and related values, contemporary social realities, concepts across subject boundaries and Biblical texts reflection in relation to the concepts taught (Guillano, 2014). The study involves two phases. The first phase is qualitative in nature, involving 414 college participants. The responses on the effects of the implementation of the pedagogy are organized into the following themes: collaborative learning; self-regulation; active involvement; deeper understanding of the lesson; formation of character; and participation in social transformation. The second phase of this investigation utilizes a quantitative design where the items under the foregoing themes were administered to another set of 465 participants. Using exploratory factor analysis, the items loaded into four factors namely Participation in Social Transformation, Values Formation, Active Engagement and Collaboration, and Deep Understanding of the Concept and its Interrelatedness with Life’s Realities. To further validate the structures of the items in the scale, the researchers endorse the need for confirmatory factor analysis.

  • Child Protection Policy Compliance in a Catholic Educational Institution

    • Authors: Karen L. Zamora, Dennis V. Madrigal
      Pages: 22 - 34
Abstract: Child protection policy is a statement of commitment of schools to safeguard children from harm and foster their holistic development and welfare. Using a sequential explanatory mixed method design, the paper examines the extent of compliance of the Catholic educational institution in the Philippines with the Department of Education (Dep.Ed.) Order No.40 on Child Protection Policy. The participants of the study are school personnel and parents of the Basic Education Department who assesses the extent of the school’s compliance with the Child Protection Policy in the areas of the school environment and admission policy, school personnel, information and procedures, safety measures for children, prevention and intervention programs, and personnel training and development. The investigation further seeks to determine the insights of the participants into the child protection practices of the school. The data are gathered using a validated researcher-made questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The findings show that the Catholic educational institution has complied with the provisions of the child protection policy yet the personnel training and development are partially complied. A significant difference was found in the extent of compliance of the Catholic educational institution with the child protection policy when the assessors are grouped according to their classification. It is recommended that child protection should be integrated into the quality management system of the school to establish quality assurance measure in dealing with child protection related matters.

  • Vietnamese skilled labor responds to job requirements in period 2011-2016.

    • Authors: Nguyen Thi Linh Huong, Phan Thi Minh Hien
      Pages: 35 - 41
Abstract: In recent years, Vietnam labors’ skill has gradually improved. However, there still existing a gap between labors skill to the requirements of the work and the demand of labor market. This situation is clearly reflected though the unemployment rate of graduated student at college and university level and the shortages of skilled workers at vocational training. Currently, an imbalance between supply and demand of labor’s qualification to meet the requirements of the labor market is one of the most serious concerns of the education and vocation and training system in Vietnam in particular the development of national human resources in general. This paper uses Vietnam Labor Survey’s data (LFS) to analyze and assess the status of Vietnamese qualified/skilled labors to meet job requirements. Accordingly, the results point out the gap between the supply of skilled labors and labor market demand in general as well as the gap in every occupation and sector in the period 2011-2016. As a result, this paper provides the empirical evidence for the ineffective in current education and training system. The paper will propose effective and sustainable recommendations to adjust the policies of national human resource development, national education and training, labor and employment to meet the requirements development and integration of Vietnam in the coming years.

  • Proposing Methods of Support by IR for Japanese National Universities on
the Mid-Term Plan Related to Globalization

    • Authors: Tetsuya Oishi, Eiichi Takata, Takahiro Seki, Masao Mori, Masashi Sekiguchi
      Pages: 42 - 47
Abstract: Japanese national universities should promote their globalization plans. However, there are some inappropriate management plans. While institutional research (“IR”) is expected to help the executives in developing mid-term plans, there are no methods to contribute it by IR at present. In all Japanese national university corporations, the mid-term plans are developed in order to achieve their mid-term objectives. 56 mid-term plans are related to globalization among the plans developed by all universities adopted in Top Global University Project in Japan. Some mid-term plans don't contain essential elements which are inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes. As the support of IR, we can show the executives processes based on data in order to develop mid-term plans based on logic model for these plans. On the other hand, the mid-term plans with no or inappropriate numerical targets exist. The other plans with inappropriate numerical targets may be unachievable. Through IR, we should provide the executive with numerical data which can indicate present and future circumstances. In our work, we will not only clarify the problems of the management plans but also study how we can support these plans concretely through IR.

  • False Product Reviews on Social Media by Influencers: Lessons Learned from
           Five Magic Skin Products

    • Authors: Ratanasuda Punnahitanond
      Pages: 61 - 71
Abstract: This study has two objectives: 1) to investigate how false product reviews of Magic Skin products on social media were presented by influencers based on message components and approaches; and 2) to examine what type of influencers are involved in these false product reviews. Using both quantitative and qualitative content analysis of 73 false product reviews of five Magic Skin products (Fern Shi- No-Bi Vitamin, Fern Cleo, Slim Milk, Mezzo Serum, and Mezzo Facial Soap) by 59 Thai influencers on social media, the results of content analysis in terms of message component yield that these false product reviews were mainly in the forms of photo captions or Instagram comments presented in three patterns of a half body shot photograph of influencer(s) with the reviewed product and/or its package. As for message approach, the analysis results indicate that words associated with beauty ideal, product benefits, unique selling proposition (USP), testimonials, and product- as-hero were used by influencers in their reviews. Two types of influencers are involved in these false product reviews; conventional celebrities outnumbered the Internet idols. The findings offer not only valuable lessons for regulatory agencies and consumers, but also several future research topics for academics as well as useful managerial implications.
