  • Inicjatywa założenia ochron dla dzieci w Krakowie w pierwszej
           połowie XIX wieku

    • Authors: Ewa Barnaś-Baran
      Pages: 7 - 22
Abstract: The article covers the issue of the initiative of organising care for small children at care homes in Krakow in the first half of the 19th century. Krakow’s civic-minded townspeople, referring to examples from all over Europe and facilities organised in Warsaw, implemented a project setting up a care shelter in Krakow. The analysis of archive material indicates that towards the end of the 1830s and the beginning of the 1840s, in Krakow, one could speak of the beginnings of a movement aimed at extending care over children of working families, including helping to feed them, morally educate them and provide for them with a basic education. Members of Krakow’s Charity Society actively participated in this work, recruiting people interested in creating care shelters, and drawing up projects for such institutions. In the end, care shelters were established and operated in the second half of the 19th century on the initiative of the private individuals who founded the Committee for Shelters for small children in Krakow. It must be noted that these included members of the Charity Society.

           Drugiej Rzeczypospolitej

    • Authors: Tomasz Fetzki
      Pages: 23 - 36
Abstract: The article discusses the direct and indirect influence that the concepts of Édouard Séguin, creator of a pedagogy for people with intellectual disabilities, had on the development of Polish special and general pedagogy in the interwar period. It also presents a brief overview of the biography and achievements of this Franco-American pedagogue and doctor.

  • Gromadzenie i ochrona źródeł szkolnych

    • Authors: Urszula Wróblewska
      Pages: 37 - 52
Abstract: Among the historical information on the development of education and upbringing in Poland, it is the school sources that have cognitive value. The school sources include chronicles, official documents, photographs, interviews, school diaries, school newspapers, school equipment, and exhibits in school memorial rooms. Since the school sources have been present as long as the schools themselves, they provide the most accurate information about the activities of schools. Usually, the school documentation duty was imposed by the school authorities, which developed appropriate regulations, and with time the systems for protection of school resources were also implemented. The school authorities also designed detailed guidelines for the preparation of, inter alia, school chronicles, and encouraged employees to write them. The interest in school documentation especially grew in the Second Republic of Poland, which resulted from the process of rebuilding the administrative structures of the Polish state. All documents were subject to an assessment by the School Inspector. The process of creating school documentation was accompanied by initiatives to store and protect it. Pedagogues started to create school museums, where the school documents were to be kept. School sources meet the criteria of historical sources. However, it is difficult to suggest a uniform typology of school sources, as it depends on the definition of the source. School source materials of invaluable cognitive value and a rich iconographic base might be the basis for research in history, education science, ethnology, sociology and anthropology. Despite their cognitive value, the school sources are currently not protected by law and may become dispersed and irreversibly lost.

  • Losy nauczycieli Wielkopolski wschodniej w czasie II wojny światowej w
świetle zapisów kronik szkolnych. Wprowadzenie do problematyki

    • Authors: Piotr Gołdyn
      Pages: 53 - 62
Abstract: School chronicles are an important but sometimes underestimated source of information for the history of education. The difficulties with their use result from their dispersion, lack of availability and subjective nature. However, despite their subjectivity, they can provide extremely interesting information, e.g. on the biographies of individual educators. This article focuses on the war fate of school teachers in the Eastern Greater Poland. Almost all of them lost their jobs as a result of the closure of schools. Many were deported to the General Government or to forced labour in Germany. Those who stayed undertook off-an-on work or jobs that had nothing to do with the teaching profession. Despite the threat to their lives, some of them were also engaged in secret teaching. Unfortunately, there were also those who decided to collaborate with the German occupier. The research included in this article should be considered an introduction to research in this source area.

  • Cele ideowe i struktura organizacyjna Wszechzwiązkowej Organizacji
Pionierskiej imienia W.I. Lenina oraz jej miejsce w systemie wychowanie
           nowego człowieka (homo sovieticus)

    • Authors: Romuald Grzybowski
      Pages: 63 - 78
Abstract: One of the characteristics of the second half of the 19th and 20th centuries was the tendency of young people to gather in youth associations and organisations. Some of these were created spontaneously and their activities were illegal, while others were created by the authorities of particular states, especially totalitarian ones. One example of such an organisation was the All-Union Pioneer Organisation, established by the leaders of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1922. Its strategic goal was to participate in the education of the new man, who was to become homo sovieticus, a higher variety of homo sapiens, in the future. The Pioneer Organisation fulfilled this task by organising children of school age (aged 9 to 14) and subjecting them to a systematic ideological and political training based on the Leninist or Stalinist model. The activities of the Pioneer Organisation were supervised by the Komsomol and additionally by the leadership of the communist party ruling the USSR. The structure of the Pioneer Organisation included groups, packs and cells. Like the Komsomol, the Pioneer Organisation also had its symbols, such as the threepointed red scarf that symbolised three generations: communists, komsomolets and pioneers, as well as a pioneer badge, a pioneer salute, a uniform, bugles and a snare drum.

  • System opieki społecznej w okresie Polski Ludowej (lata
           1944–1989). Zarys problematyki

    • Authors: Mikołaj Brenk
      Pages: 79 - 92
Abstract: In the Polish People’s Republic (1944–1989), a number of organisational and ideological changes were made in the social welfare sector: most of the ways of organising help that were tested during the interwar period were replaced with new concepts, often with sad consequences for those in need. This article presents the changes that took place in the Polish social security sector in the decades after World War II. Subsequent attempts to reform the social welfare system have been shown with the use of archival materials, other historical sources and literature on the subject.

  • Historia autyzmu od baśni i legend po badania genetyczne – laboratorium
           budowy mitów w nauce

    • Authors: Krzysztof Osóbka
      Pages: 93 - 120
Abstract: Autism is one of the most mysterious human disorders ever known. Although existing since the dawn of humanity, it was only in 1943 that science took up this subject. Before, undiscovered and unnamed, it was considered merely a legend, and the only existing records were those of a few pioneer case studies. With his discoveries, Leo Kanner, the first person to properly define autism, marked the beginning of a struggle to describe the disorder using scientific language. Unfortunately, the attempts were not always successful. Autism, as described by contemporary science, is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Theories claiming its psychogenic aetiology can no longer be sustained. The history of research concerning autism points to a phenomenon known as collective thinking – a term coined by Ludwik Fleck, as well as to the process of the emergence of a scientific myth. It is a study of how researchers’ presuppositions can shape social beliefs, and at the same time how constructing scientific theories is inherently ingrained in the cognitive style of an era. The second half of the 20th century marks the beginning of a gradual change in the classification of autism. The perception of the nature of this disorder shifted from psychogenic theories to organic aetiologies. It is the voice of the enormously talented and creative individuals with high-functioning autism that triggered a breakthrough in the research - a voice that was ignored until the 1980s.

do lat trzech – dziecko „na tle” żłobka, żłobek „na tle”
           dziecka (wprowadzenie do problemu)

    • Authors: Katarzyna Sadowska
      Pages: 121 - 132
Abstract: This paper is a review of Polish academic studies into the topic of early child education and care (up to three years of age), published over the course of the 20th Century to the present day, with the main focus on institutional daycare. The majority of academic papers on the subject of early childhood in the context of public institutional daycare were focused on nursing and development, while nursery schools as such were most frequently regarded solely as an alternative to being brought up in a family. The dominant notions in the relevant literature are those of care (including mainly nursing, nutrition and preventative care), development and education. Among the works published after 1945, the majority were nursing handbooks or elaborations on psychology. Certain components of basic early childhood ‘didactics’ can be identified in the papers by Halina Spionek and Hanna Trawińska, as well as in the journals from the 1960s through to the 1980s. The 1970s also saw a number of papers dedicated to the implementation of proper everyday practices into nursery schools and improving the quality of their services. Research on the social spaces of nursery schools was also undertaken in the late 1990s by a team of pedagogues in Łódź, while the economic and social conditions of nursery school operation was examined a group of scholars from the Białystok School of Economics. Currently, the topic of early education in the context of institutional daycare is being explored with growing interest, however, in the overall field of pedagogics it still remains under-researched.

  • Struktura, zmiany organizacyjne i poziom nauczania Publicznej Szkoły
           Powszechnej w Brdowie w latach 1919–1939

    • Authors: Dariusz Racinowski
      Pages: 133 - 150
Abstract: The school in Brdów dates back to the mid–15th century. It was founded and managed by Pauline fathers. In the following centuries, the school functioned with varying degrees of success. The realdevelopment of the Brdów school occurred in the interwar period. In the following years, the structure of the school changed, due to the growing number of students. Before the outbreak of World War II, there was a general public school of 3rd level, i.e. one with seven grades, in Brdów.
The teachers worked under very difficult conditions. The school building was too small to accommodate all the classes. The classrooms were overcrowded. However, the educators tried to achieve the best results possible. This was confirmed by subsequent inspections conducted by educational authorities. Just before the outbreak of World War II, a new school building was opened in Brdów which greatly improved working and learning conditions there.
