  • Cross-Case Analysis of Engineering Education Experiences in Inclusive
STEM-Focused High Schools in the United States

    • Authors: Erin E. Peters-Burton; Todd Johnson
Abstract: In an attempt to broaden participation in STEM, a newtype of high school is emerging, high schools which include a focus onengineering, have few or no academic admission criteria, and actively involvestudents of all levels of ability, known as Inclusive STEM High Schools(ISHSs). One aspect of successful ISHSs includes the intentional and explicitintegration of engineering learning opportunities into coursework. The purposeof this paper is to report results of a systematic cross-case analysis exploringthe extent of engineering learning opportunities in five exemplar ISHSs. Theresults are framed by the Engineering inK-12 Education report from which seven different topics were derived toappropriately represent the field of engineering in schools: design, identifying constraints, modelingand analysis, engineering habits of mind, systems thinking, modeling, identifying constraints, communication, and optimization,. The cross-caseanalysis was conducted by aggregating the information gathered through surveys, interviews, focus groups, classroom observations, and document analysis, notingsimilarities and differences across schools and mechanisms for the course foci.It was found in the participating ISHSs that engineering is not merely anelective; all students must take at least one engineering course to graduate, although the states in which the schools are located did not requireengineering for a diploma. The most prominent topics from the recommended listfound at the schools were design, engineering habits of mind, andcommunication, while the least prominent were modeling, analysis, andidentifying constraints. Based on the results of this study, the engineeringeducation community is encouraged to continue making engineering concepts andskills accessible to K-12 educators, who may not have prior formal training inthe field of engineering or engineering education.

  • From Conception to Curricula: The Role of Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics in Integrated STEM Units

    • Authors: Elizabeth Ring-Whalen; Emily Dare, Gillian Roehrig, Preethi Titu, Elizabeth Crotty
Abstract: Thepurpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the conceptions ofintegrated STEM education held by in-service science teachers through the useof Photo Elicitation Interviews (PEIs) and to examine how, if at all, those conceptions were reflected in teacher-createdintegrated STEM curricula that include an engineering design challenge. Ourfindings suggest that different conceptual models of integrated STEM held by teacherslead to different ways of creating, developing, and writing integrated STEMcurricula. Additionally, we found that the use of a STEM integration framework and a Framework forQuality K-12 Engineering Education, which guided the NSF-funded project andcontextualized this study, were also reflected in the teacher-createdcurricula. While the process of developing the curricula was not examined, ourfindings indicate that teacher conceptions of integrated STEM and theframeworks that guided the curriculum development process play a significantrole in what teachers decide to include and emphasize in units they create.

  • Informed Designers' Students’ Reflections on Their Engineering
           Design Process

    • Authors: Kerrie A. Douglas; Tamara J. Moore, Hillary E. Merzdorf
Abstract: Assessment of students’ critical thinking and problemsolving in engineering is a real challenge for classroom teachers andresearchers. Yet, students demonstrate evidence of learning through multiplemeans, including written reflections. The purpose of this study was to explorehow students in grades 5 and 7 reflect on what they had learned aboutengineering design practices in comparison to their previous understandings. The researchers applied qualitative content analysis to analyze studentresponses to engineering notebook prompts that asked students to reflect ontheir understanding of the problem and how to design solutions. Data werecollected from two classrooms (n =47) that had implemented integrated STEM curricula. The results of this studyindicate that students were able to reflect meaningfully on their engineeringpractices and how their understanding of what it meant to design had changed. The notebooks provided an opportunity for students to demonstrate evidence oftheir learning through reflection on their own design practices. The findingssuggest that teachers and curriculum developers can use reflection as a meansto help students connect their own learning to informed design practices, whichmay help students move toward being independent informed designers. Futureresearch should consider how teachers can use notebooks to provide feedback onengineering practices

  • Student Justifications in Engineering Design Descriptions: Examining
           Authority and Legitimation

    • Authors: Karl G. Jung; Justin McFadden
Abstract: The process of design isa key component of engineering that relies heavily on student collaboration andlanguage use. One important aspect of design is the need for designers todevelop solutions capable of solving specific engineering problems. Engineersenact recognizable epistemic practices and often rely on data as a means forjustifying their designed solutions. Indeed, when striving to meet a specificclient’s requests, engineers must make claims that rely on collected data as ameans for justifying their design decision. This study examined how two groupsof elementary students engaged with this specific practice (i.e., using data tosupport design decisions) by investigating the justifications for theirespoused design decisions during an engineering design challenge. Usingdiscourse analysis methods, this ethnographic microanalysis examined the waysin which students legitimized their design choices, in addition toinvestigating how those justifications were or were not validated by theclassroom teacher. Findings indicated students used either their personalauthority, or the data and expert authority it provided to support theirengineering design decisions. Additionally, the classroom teacher mostlyvalidated student justifications constructed using applicable sources of datawhile providing few opportunities for students to enact their personalauthority. Findings highlightthe need for instruction that purposefully connects students’ personalauthority with specific aspects of the design problem space so students canfeel empowered to pursue and test the validity of their initial design ideasusing applicable data.

  • Engineering Education in Elementary and Secondary Schools [Editorial
           Essay]

    • Authors: Senay Purzer; Mack Shelley
Abstract: Engineering, with its focus on design and problem-solving, is used inK-12 education to promote learning in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). In this special issue, we bring together seven researchpapers that have examined critical questions in engineering education. Thesepapers collectively examine recent research in K-12 education and address threebroad topics: different models for integrating engineering into K-12 curricula, different learning outcomes associated with alternative models of integrationand implementation, and ways K-12 students engage in epistemic practices ofengineering while learning STEM concepts. Future research needs to address howengineering should be implemented in schools, what and how learning outcomesmust be assessed, and how engineering should be taught. Further research inK-12 curriculum, student learning, and teacher education is necessary, as areapplications of contemporary research methods to study teaching and learning ofengineering concepts and practices in elementary and secondary schools.

  • Comparing Two Approaches to Engineering Design in the 7th Grade Science
           Classroom

    • Authors: Molly H. Goldstein; Sharifah A. Omar, Senay Purzer, Robin S. Adams
Abstract: Inschools, design projects can be implemented at a variety ofways and with varying degrees of resources from teachers and schools. However, little work has been done on the differences between student learning outcomesand the type of design projects. This study compares two design projectsimplemented in 7th grade classrooms (n=677) at two different schools to explain affordances of eachapproach based on differences in project authenticity, scale, and depth ofcontext in supporting student learning outcomes. The main data sources were anengineering science test and a design reasoning elicitation problem, administered at each school before and after the design project. To understandthe relationship between students’ science learning gains and schoolimplementation, we conducted a sign test to compare between-group differencesand a Mann Whitney Test to compare within-group differences. Then, we performeda content analysis to examine students’ design reasoning and a two-waycontingency table analysis to understand if a student’s school implementationwas related to the changes in design trade-off reasoning. Students at bothschools exhibited statistically significant but small gains on theirengineering science test scores. While students at the school with a moreinterdisciplinary, more authentic design project had higher scores on theengineering science test, students at the school with a smaller scaleimplementation discussed more trade-off factors in their design reasoningelicitation problem. These findings suggest that differences in projectimplementation appear to be associated with different learning outcomes, andthere are potential benefits to both authenticity and simplicity in designprojects.

  • Supporting Engineering Design Ideas with Science and Mathematics: A Case
Study of Middle School Life Science Students

    • Authors: Corey A. Mathis; Emilie A. Siverling, Tamara J. Moore, Kerrie A. Douglas, S. Selcen Guzey
Abstract: Although engineering design is dependent upon the useof science and mathematics, the actual prototype, model, or solution that pre-collegestudents generate can be accomplished without the students explicitly usingscientific or mathematical concepts. It is therefore important to explore howstudents apply science and mathematics concepts when engaged in a curriculumthat was purposefully developed to foster student understanding ofstandards-based content. The purpose of this research is to apply the casestudy method to explore the following research question: How do middle school students use scientific and mathematical conceptsthat were explored during the problem scoping lessons of an engineeringdesign-based STEM integration unit to generate ideas and make design decisions'Researchers collected data from one 7th-grade team during an integrated STEMunit and applied qualitative content analysis methods to examine the data. Thefindings show that students meaningfully used science and mathematics conceptstaught within the unit to defend their engineering design ideas/decisions. Italso revealed incomplete understanding of certain concepts. Engineering designcan provide opportunities for teachers to assess how well students have learnedscientific and mathematical concepts, provided that the curricula are carefullydesigned to prompt students’ use of content to make design decisions.

  • The Impact of a Middle School Engineering Course on Students’ Academic
           Achievement and Non-Cognitive Skills

    • Authors: Meltem Alemdar; Roxanne A. Moore, Jeremy A. Lingle, Jeff Rosen, Jessica Gale, Marion C. Usselman
Abstract: Engineering and integrated STEM experiences are being promoted at theK-12 level to increase interest and retention in STEM and to reinforce learningof mathematics and science content. However, research is still emergingregarding best practices for curriculum development, student impacts, andtransfer of knowledge across disciplines. The purpose of this study is toinvestigate the impact of middle school engineering curriculum on students’academic achievement in science and mathematics and also on non-cognitiveskills such as student engagement and self-efficacy in academics. Specifically, the Engineering Design Process (EDP) conceptual model is used as a frameworkfor the engineering curriculum, which is also grounded in Problem-BasedLearning (PBL) practices while integrating science practices and foundationalmathematics. Participants include 6th-8th grade students atfour public middle schools in Georgia. The research results showthat students who have taken at least two engineering courses showstatistically significant gains on state-level standardized science and mathematicstests over those students who were never enrolled in these courses. Further, the results show a statistically significant increase in cognitive andbehavioral engagement in STEM and science interest. The results of this studysupport the idea that enabling students to practice their science and mathematicsskills and knowledge within the context of interesting and engaging middleschool engineering classes can significantly benefit both their engagement inSTEM and their academic achievement.
