  • The Issue of Justice and Injustice in Malacca Sultanate, 1400 – 1511
           AD

    • Authors: Haji Awang Asbol bin Haji Mail, Haji Ramlee bin Haji Tinkong, Nur Syazwani binti Haji Md Suif
Abstract: ABSTRACT: Studying the issue of justice and injustice among the rulers of the sultanate of Malacca is somewhat important in order to measure the government’s stability and efficiency. This study believes that a well-maintained justice system plays an essential role in keeping the country’s administration safe and stable. It could also help to reflect the different traits and characters of the governing authorities in carrying out justice. By applying the historical method, this research will be focusing mainly on the issue of social and political justice. The issue will be analysed through the selected case studies. This article also elaborated and analysed the background of the Malacca sultanate; the issue of injustice with some cases; and the issue of justice pertaining the Malacca sultanate in 15th to 16th century. Based on the analysis, it appears that not all rulers mentioned here, in the sultanate of Malacca, had practiced injustice during their time in power. There were some rulers that had taken a serious responsibility on practising and maintaining justice in their administration, such as Sultan Muzaffar Syah (1446-1456) and Sultan Alaudin Riayat Syah (1477-1488).KEY WORD: Issue of Justice and Injustice; Sultanate of Malacca; Social and Political Stability; Muslim Rulers. About the

  • Terpisah namun Terhubung: Orang Melayu Menghadapi Kolonialis Eropa di
           Melayu Nusantara pada Abad XIX

    • Authors: M Dien Madjid
ABSTRACT: “Separated but Connected: Malay Encountered European Colonialists in Malay Archipelago in the XIX Century”. This article, using historical methods, discusses some historical cases involving Malays from three territories, namely Bangka, Brunei Darussalam, and Singapure. The Malay is an ethnic group inhabiting many islands in Southeast Asia. Prior to the enactment of the nation-state concept, their relationship did not recognize the identity of difference, whether social, political, or economic. Their culture had something in common, though in some places had a difference. The results show that Bangka, Brunei, and Singapore were a small part of the great Malay dialectic in facing the European colonialists. Although fellow Malays, apparently in politics, their views were distinguishable. Some were coordinating with Europeans and making them as profitable partners, as evident in the cases of Brunei Darussalam and Singapore; on the other hand, some were firmly shouting war to Europeans, as in the case of Bangka in Indonesia. The Europeans came up with renewal; and admittedly, we are enlightened thanks to their roles. But, they also instill hatred, especially for countries previously colonized. The memory will be an image that continues to settle in the future.KEY WORD: Malay; Bangka, Brunei, and Singapore; European Colonialism; Separated but Connected; Social-Political Dynamics.About the Author: Prof. Dr. M. • Pengaruh Demografi terhadap Perubahan Sosio-Politik Orang Iban di Sarawak

    • Authors: Philip Beginda, Bilcher Bala
ABSTRACT: “The Influence of Demographics on the Socio-Political Change of the Iban People in Sarawak”. On the demographics of Iban people in Sarawak, Malaysia are inseparable from the search for the history of Iban ancestry that closely related to the history of migration. Demographic factors have a significant influence on socio-political changes. Separated settlements based on river systems affect the pattern of political thinking among the Iban people in Sarawak. The distance between each settlement will be further detached from their political thinking. Collective political consolidation is difficult as conflicts arise amongst them. Each of them prioritizes the domination of the political parties they support. This article, by using the social sciences approaches and historical method, describes the history of Iban origin and migration patterns ib the four-phase: traditional, Brooke dynasty rule, post-independence of 1963, and post-1983. Research on demographic-based settlement patterns can identify changes to leadership, thinking, and political struggles. It contributes also to one dimension of demographics in understanding the socio-political change of Iban people in Sarawak. Until the 2000s, demographic political patterns were still shackles of Iban people, and caused not to the emergence of leaders who could unite the socio-political of Iban as a nation.KEY WORD: Demographics; Changes; Iban People; Sarawak; Socio-Politics.About the

  • Empirical Analysis of Trade Liberalization and Economic Growth in Nigeria,
           1980-2013

    • Authors: John Aiyedogbon, Helen A Andow, Bright O Ohwofasa
Abstract: ABSTRACT: The trade liberalization is necessary and has positive effects for development, and on the growth performance of the industrial sector, constituted an increasingly controversial issue. The origin of trade liberalization and market-oriented economic reform in many developing countries began in the early 1980s and intensified in the 1990s. The reform takes various forms in terms of ownership and contents in different countries. The paper accesses the impact of trade liberalization on economic growth in Nigeria for the period 1980-2013. Two equations were estimated: firstly, made index of industrial production as a function of trade openness, terms of trade, and real exports; and, secondly, equation made real gross domestic product as a function of trade openness, terms of trade, real export, and trade liberalization dummy. The study employs a vector error correction model, quantitative method, and economics approaches. The results show that openness of the foreign sector and trade liberalization dummy have positive significant impact on both industrial performance and economic growth in Nigeria. It is recommended the removal of impediments to trade, such as excessive import levies and arbitrary tariffs.KEY WORD: Trade Liberalization; Index of Industrial Production; Real Gross Domestic Product; Co-Integration; Vector Error Correction Model. About the Authors: John Aiyedogbon, Ph.D. is a Lecturer at the Department of Economics, Birgham University, Karu, Nassarawa State, Nigeria. • Pers dan Kritik Sosial pada Masa Orde Baru: Peristiwa MALARI Tahun 1974
dalam Pandangan Surat Kabar Merdeka dan Indonesia Raya di Jakarta

    • Authors: Andi Suwirta
ABSTRACT: “Press and Social Criticism in the New Order Era: The MALARI Affairs of 1974 in the Views of Merdeka and Indonesia Raya’s Newspapers in Jakarta”. This article, using historical methods and communication science approaches, in particular content analysis of the mass media, seeks to explain the events of MALARI (Turmoil of 15 January) in 1974 in the views of "Merdeka" and "Indonesia Raya" newspapers published in Jakarta. The newspapers of "Merdeka" and "Indonesia Raya" were categorized as "personal journalism", i.e. the content of the newspapers was markedly colored by the views of the founders and their leaders personally, namely Burhanuddin Muhammad Diah and Mochtar Lubis. The results of the study show that although the newspapers of "Merdeka" and "Indonesia Raya" both highlighted the events of MALARI in 1974, and its the causes, were critically; but when the New Order government took firm action against those accused of the master mind of event, the two newspapers in Jakarta differed in their views and interests. The newspaper of "Indonesia Raya" continued to criticize strongly to the New Order government, which led to the bans and did not publish forever; while the newspaper of "Merdeka" continued to support the government and was allowed to be published during the New Order era (1966-1998).KEY WORD: Press and Social Criticism; Newspapers of Merdeka and Indonesia Raya; Events of MALARI 1974; New Order Government.About the Author: Andi Suwirta, M.Hum. adalah Dosen Senior di Departemen Pendidikan Sejarah FPIPS UPI (Fakultas Pendidikan Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia), Jalan Dr. Setiabudhi No.229 Bandung 40154, Jawa Barat, Indonesia.
