  • Learning Struggles in Math and Their Behavior Manifestations among
           Children at Home

    • Authors: Jose M Ocampo; Jr., Laura V Ocampo, Melody P Cruz
Abstract: ABSTRACT: Children need to be aware of their learning needs as well as how they can have these learning needs met. The facilitation of learning is incumbent on how learners would receive, process, and retain new and difficult information. Learning is influenced by a lot of factors. These factors include daily experiences, physical activities, love, and care that the child receives. The relevance of the study extends to the fact that the findings should serve as a spring board for proposing modifications or adjustments on teaching strategies in order to address learning struggles. This case study aimed to identify the learning struggles in Math and behavior manifestations of 6-year-old children at home. Data were gathered using checklist and interview. The specifics of four learning struggles in Math were the following: (1) Left-to-right visual skills/Math calculations /understanding of writing symbols; (2) Focusing on test; (3) Mental Math calculations; and (4) Controlling skills/hand and eye coordination skills. Learning struggles in Math can be manifested through various bodily movements and such were grouped into four areas, namely: head, arm-hand, shoulder-waist, and waist-foot. It is recommended to conduct further research on learning struggles in Math using a larger population of school children. Likewise, research in exploring interventions to address children’s learning struggles in Math shall be conducted.KEY WORD: Learning Struggles in Math; Behavior Manifestation; Children at Home; Children’s Parents; Teachers. About the

  • Pendidikan Tradisional di Negara Brunei Darussalam: Perspektif Sejarah

    • Authors: Haji Awang Asbol bin Haji Mail, Andi Suwirta
ABSTRACT: “Traditional Education in Brunei Darussalam: Perspective of History”. This article, by using qualitative methods with oral and written historical sources, shows that before the emergence of Malay schools, as a formal education system, the traditional education of the Brunei people has been dominated by Islamic education. The Islamic education, categorized as non-formal education, has coincided with the process of Islamization of Brunei Muslim community. At that time, private houses became the center of Islamic education. However, as more and more Brunei's people embrace Islam, homes as Islamic educational platforms are unable to accommodate the learners. From here the idea is to set up the hall as a new Islamic educational center. Islamic education at the hall, seen as being in the 19th century, has contributed much to the creation of many local scholars. However, the role of the hall has been extinct in the life of the Brunei community in 1960s. This has been the result of the emergence of a full Religious School, which began in 1956. In addition, the Sultan's palace also took a role as an education center at the beginning of Islam to Brunei Darussalam. The influence of this palace education, the subsequent Sultanates of Brunei continued to defend the Islamic faith in their administration. Meanwhile, when the mosque is built in Brunei, it also serves as a place to distribute Islamic education. It is clear that the traditional education of the Brunei-based Islamic education system has been moved through three places, namely: private houses, hall, and mosque. KEY WORD: Traditional Education; House, Hall, and Mosque; Roles of Sultan Palace; Islamic Development in Brunei Darussalam.  About the Authors: Prof. Madya Dr. Haji Awang Asbol bin Haji Mail ialah Pensyarah Kanan di Jabatan Pengajian Sejarah dan Antarabangsa, Fakulti Sastera dan Sains Sosial UBD (Universiti Brunei Darussalam) di Bandar Seri Begawan, Negara Brunei Darussalam. • Dinamika Pekerja Anak: Studi Kasus Pekerja Anak pada Sektor Informal di
           DKI Jakarta

    • Authors: Novrian Satria Perdana
ABSTRACT: “The Dynamics of Child Labor: Case Study of Child Labor in the Informal Sector in Jakarta”. Child labor is a term for employing small children or minors. The term child labor has the connotation of exploiting minors for their labor, with a small wage; or consideration for the development of their personality, safety, health, and future prospects of the children employed. The problem of child labor is a phenomenon that is difficult to be solved until the present moment. The existence of child labor is closely related to the situation of poverty that afflicts society. Currently, the author conducted a study about the dynamic of child labor, with the determination of respondents based on the purposive sampling procedure. The results of the research revealed that the most of children who decided to be child laborers by the aged around 9-11 years, as much as 36 percent; and there are even younger than 9 years old, as much as 11 percent. Therefore, this is largely due to economic factor that force parents involve their children. Next results from this study is the higher of the family income, education level of children on his age in a child's environment, parental educational level, and the fewer number of family members, make the probability of child labor in the informal sector in Jakarta to stay in school growing bigger; and the higher the wages of child labor makes the probability of child labor in the informal sector in Jakarta to stay in school is getting lower. This study recommends that the government provide free education facilities for children of the lower economy (poor) so that they continue their education and provide additional welfare benefits.KEY WORD: Child Labor; Working Motivation; Poverty; Parents Education; Informal Sector.About the Author: Novrian Satria Perdana, M.E. adalah Peneliti di Pusat Penelitian Kebijakan Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Senayan, Jakarta, Indonesia. Abstract: RINGKASAN: Penelitian ini penting dilakukan sebagai bahan pertimbangan dan masukan kepada pihak Tim Pembentukan DOB (Daerah Otonom Baru) Kabupaten Okikha, agar mengetahui seberapa besar antusias masyarakat Distrik Wita-Waya di Kabupaten Jayawijaya, Papua, Indonesia. ABSTRACT: “Community Perception of the Formation of Okikha Regency: A Social and Political Analysis”. This research is important to be carried out as consideration and input to the Formation Team of DOB (New Autonomous Region) of Okikha Regency, in order to find out how enthusiastic the Wita-Waya District community in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua, Indonesia. The research was carried out for one year, i.e. from January 2017 to December 2017, with informant determination techniques by purposive sampling and snowball sampling, with a total of 29 informants. Data collection techniques are carried out in various ways, namely in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies. The analysis techniques are carried out by data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions or verification. The results showed that there was a dichotomy of public perceptions of the formation discourse of the Okikha Regency, namely positive and negative perceptions. Community perception is called positive, if the community receives the discourse on the formation of the Okikha Regency. Community perception is called negative, if the community refuses to form the Okikha Regency. However, in the end, it succeeded in realizing a political agreement between the Regional Government, namely the Jayawijaya Regency Government with the Kurulu community implicitly and explicitly. The point of meeting and understanding between the community is that with the formation of the New Okikha Regency, the people in Kurulu will be more advanced and prosperous.KEY WORD: Community Perception; Pros and Cons; New Regency Formation; Okikha and Jayawijaya; Meeting Points and Understanding.  About the Authors: Siti Khikmatul Rizqi, M.Si. dan Dines Muni, M.Si. adalah Dosen Senior pada Program Studi Ilmu Pemerintahan STISIP (Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik) Amal Ilmiah YAPIS (Yayasan Pendidikan Islam) Wamena, Jalan Trikora Hom-hom, Kampus II STISIP AI YAPIS, Wamena, Kabupaten Jayawijaya, Papua, Indonesia.
