  • Tri Tangtu on Sunda Wiwitan Doctrine in the XIV-XVII Century

    • Authors: Etty Saringendyanti, Nina Herlina, Mumuh Muhsin Zakaria
      Pages: 1 - 14
Abstract: ABSTRACT: This article aims to reconstruct the concept of “Tri Tangtu” in the “Sunda Wiwitan” doctrine in the XIV-XVII century, when the Sunda kingdom in West Java, Indonesia was under the reign of Niskala Wastu (-kancana) at Surawisesa Palace in Kawali, Ciamis, until its collapse in 1579 AD (Anno Domini). “Tri Tangtu” absorbs the three to unite, one for three, essentially three things in fact one, the things and paradoxical attributes fused into and expanded outward. The outside looks calm, firm, one, but inside is continuously active in its entirety in various activities. This concept is still also continues on indigenous of Kanekes (Baduy) in Banten, Western Java. In achieving that goal, historical methods are used, consisting of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. In the context of explanation used social sciences theory, namely socio-anthropology through the theory of religion proposed by Clifford Geertz (1973), namely religion as a cultural system that coherently explains the involvement between religion and culture. The results of this study show that the concept of “Tri Tangtu” consists of “Tri Tangtu dina Raga (Salira)”; “Tri Tangtu dina Nagara”; and “Tri Tangtu dina Buana”. About “Tri Tangtu dina Raga” is a system of human reciprocal relationship to the transcendent with “lampah, tekad, ucap (bayu-sabda-hedap)” or deed, strong will, and word. “Tri Tangtu dina Nagara” is a unity of “Rsi-Ratu-Rama” or Cleric, Ruler, and a Wise Oldmen. Lastly, “Tri Tangtu dina Buana” is a relationship between Lord or “Hiyang/Hyang”, the universe, and human beings that must be harmoniously intertwined.KEY WORDS: Sundanese Community; “Tri Tangtu” Teaching; Human Relationship; Harmoniously in Diversities.    About the

  • Jember’s Development from the Traditional Authority to Modern
           Government

    • Authors: Retno Winarni, Ratna Endang Widuatie
      Pages: 15 - 30
Abstract: ABSTRACT: This article examines the changes that occurred in the government system in Jember, East Java, in the period 1600-1945. The changes that took place in government in Jember region from the time of traditional rule to the modern era in the 20th century will show a historical pattern, which can be seen as a form of power-rise and can give historical explanation for the remaining social phenomena in Jember. The findings show that Jember, as an unit of government, has a history that can be traced back to the time of the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms. The collapse and rise of the Islamic-style kingdoms, and the influx of foreign influences, also gave the color to Jember nowadays. After the collapse of Blambangan, Jember region began to get foreign influence. Slowly but surely, it became the basis for the establishment of Jember as a unit of modern government. Jember's geographical condition, on the other hand, is a factor that inhibited the emergence of a governance in this region, up to the 18th century. The development of Jember was also influenced by plantation economic factors and population migration from central Java and Madura of East Java. All of them combined to produce the known Jember as it is now. The most significant change was when the Dutch colonial government upgraded the status of Jember into a “regentschap” or district in 1929. The construction of various supporting facilities of the city was encouraged, and eventually all of this became capital in the administration of Jember's government in the independence period, since 1945 to date.KEY WORDS: Jember; Government; Power; Traditional; Dutch Colonial Government.  About the

However, indigenous peoples in Mentawai Islands are still active in carrying out the “Arat Sabulungan” traditions in cultural, ritual, and ceremonial customs. “Arat Sabulungan”, as belief system, has still existed in the life of the Mentawai indigenous people. Besides other factors, such as their very strong ties to customary law, even though Protestantism, Islam, and Catholicism have become the official religion of the indigenous Mentawai people since 1954, but they still carry out the principles of living in the “Arat Sabulungan” tradition in daily life. Until now, there is still no new customary law system that is able to replace the position of “Arat Sabulungan” that they have upheld. They still think that “Arat Sabulungan” tradition is a belief system; and principles of tradition are still relevant to the culture and legal ideals of the Mentawai people.KEY WORDS: “Arat Sabulungan” Tradition; Prohibition; Mentawai Islands People; Improvement of the Government Policy.     About the
