  • Digital textbooks: The effects of input modality and distraction on
student learning at a Hispanic-serving institution.
    • Abstract: We exposed college students (N = 269; for 126, the first language spoken in the home was English) at a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) to a passage from a digital psychology textbook in which input modality (reading or listening) and level of distraction were varied. Students did one of the following: read the passage, listened to the passage, read and listened simultaneously, listened while doodling (low distraction), listened while simulating a car ride (moderate distraction), or listened while preparing a meal (high distraction). We used a multiple-choice test to test recall. Student retention differed based on input modality. Specifically, conditions that removed text and replaced it with audio hindered performance. For example, students in conditions that involved reading the text showed higher recall scores compared to students in conditions that involved only listening (β = −2,483, p < .001). Performance worsened as we added distractors. Finally, the results suggest that students’ background with English is important for their retention of textbook information that is presented in English. Specifically, it appears that having text is more important to students less proficient in English than it is to more proficient English speakers. Our results suggest that reading digital texts leads to better recall than does simply listening to them, but distraction and early language experience may be important factors to consider when determining recommendations for digital textbook use. • Counseling psychology students’ perceptions of faculty multicultural
           competence.
    • Abstract: One current focus of training in applied psychology programs is multicultural competence. Research on multicultural competence has focused on students and on clinical supervisors. However, much training in multicultural competence occurs in classrooms and within training programs, and there has been limited examination of the multicultural competence of faculty. Using consensual qualitative research (CQR) methodology, we examined counseling psychology doctoral student perceptions of the multicultural competence of counseling psychology faculty. Utilizing a semistructured interview protocol, we obtained in-depth descriptions of how counseling psychology doctoral students define and perceive the multicultural competence of faculty members. Six domains emerged from the analysis, including faculty expertise, faculty–student relationships, faculty initiative, faculty as agents of social justice, faculty attributes, and faculty limitations. Some of these themes were unexpected and are new to the field of multicultural competence training. We recommend that faculty engage in reflective interactions with students and consider their own strengths as well as growth areas related to multicultural competence, keeping these 6 domains in mind. • Creating an online course shell: Strategies to mitigate frustration and
increase student success across multiple campuses.
    • Abstract: Online courses are becoming an increasingly popular means of undergraduate education. Introductory psychology is a course that is often a requirement for most undergraduates at both 2- and 4-year institutions. The demand for this class often exceeds the capacity of full-time faculty, resulting in many part-time faculty teaching the introductory psychology course. Unfortunately, this may lead to a lack of consistency in what is taught and the omission of critical concepts in this foundation course. Creating an online course shell provides an opportunity to address these difficulties. This article shares a model of creating a course shell for the introductory psychology course from a team of full-time faculty members across 6 campuses. Challenges and opportunities for faculty are discussed. Implications for faculty and administrators are explored. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Does mathematical ability predict performance in the research components
of an undergraduate psychology degree' Only a little bit, for a little
           while, and in specific ways.
    • Abstract: It is well documented that many undergraduate students of psychology experience high levels of anxiety about the statistical components of their degree, and this anxiety is associated with lower academic performance and various negative psychological consequences. Although students are anxious about the use of mathematics within their studies, to date there is little evidence showing a relationship between different aspects of mathematical ability and performance in research methods and statistical analysis modules within a psychology degree. Using a custom designed Maths Test to evaluate the specific mathematical skills that are required to complete a psychology degree; this study considered whether mathematical ability could predict performance across various methods of assessment and across all 3 years of the degree program in 213 first-year undergraduate psychology students. While some significant predictive relationships were found, they were quite specific, quite small, and quite short-term. Only the interpretation of graphical information was predictive of some components of a first-year module, and no aspects of mathematical ability predicted any measure of performance in second- or third-year modules. These findings have potential implications for curriculum design, particularly in terms of developing interventions to reduce statistics anxiety in psychology students. • Breaking barriers: Developing faculty-led international trips for
           underserved students.
    • Abstract: With rising international sociopolitical conflicts, higher education institutions’ core mission must strengthen and offer educational programs that nurture global competence. The current “Pedagogical Points to Ponder” offers an inclusive study abroad model and discusses ways to break situational, institutional, and dispositional barriers for nontraditional students to engage in international developments. Nontraditional students have to juggle between academic and personal responsibilities and often have restricted resources. Typically, they cannot afford to participate in a year-long study abroad program (situational barrier), lack information about international trips (institutional barrier), lack knowledge about academic programs and fit, and fear traveling to unknown destinations (dispositional barrier). An interdisciplinary faculty-led short trip is described herewith as an encouragement for faculty to design unique programs for underserved students and involve them in matters of global significance. Pedagogical aspects based on APA learning goals, trip preparation, pre- and post-trip reflections, and challenges are further discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Improving student learning from lectures.
    • Abstract: Lecturing is a primary mode of teaching in higher education. A majority of college teachers lecture extensively, and many more lecture at least some of the time in their classes. Good lectures are viewed as well-organized presentations that stimulate student interest and maintain student attention. But, research demonstrates that lecturing is less effective than active modes of instruction. To produce better learning from lecture, educators need to promote deeper cognitive engagement with the subject matter before, during, and after lectures. This teacher-ready research review proposes strategies to help students acquire essential background knowledge before lecture, manage cognitive overload and engage in deep learning processes during lecture, and elaborate, consolidate, and retain what they learn after lecture.
