  • Using Three-Dimensional Printers in the Social Studies Education

    • Authors: Hıdır Karaduman
Abstract: Technology changesand transforms our lives every passing day. The pace of this transformationthat started in early ages constantly increases, and such a transformationaffects all processes in our lives. One of the technologies that are likely toresult in such a transformation as the steam engine, atomic energy, microchipsand the Internet did once is three-dimensional printing. Economical, social, demographic, environmental and educational effects of three-dimensionalprinting are felt even more with each passing day (Campbell, Williams, Ivanovaand Garrett, 2011). As new developments are often observed in this technology, there is still limited work on how it can be used in education.  The purpose of this paper is to determine theareas of usage for this technology in education and social studies education, and explain the connections between three-dimensional printers and the 2017social studies course curriculum with examples. In the study, it was seen thatthree-dimensional printers could be used as a tool in teaching the concepts, basic competencies, skills and outcomes included in the 2017 social studiescourse curriculum. Suggestions supporting the use of three-dimensional printersin social studies education were offered as a result of the study.

  • An Evaluation on Secondary School Students’ Map Literacy Skills

    • Authors: Hüseyin Erol
Abstract: The aim of this research is to examine whether the 7thgraders have satisfactory knowledge on map literacy levels. This research is aqualitative study in scanning model. The sample group of the research consistedof 96 7th graders chosen through not random purposeful criterion sampling in 3secondary schools in the city center of Adıyaman. A question form developed bythe researcher was employed as the data collection tool in the research. Thequestions were formed based on acquisitions of the curriculum of 2017 socialstudies course in secondary school. It was revealed through the findings of theresearch that the 7th graders’ map literacy levels were mainly at intermediatelevel. The students’ geographic knowledge is thought not to have improvedsufficiently as they only memorized what they were taught during the courseperiod but they didn’t employ it too much in practice. This is also thought tohappen because they did not study on maps and interpret geographic knowledgesufficiently. The fact that the workbooks for social studies course forsecondary school don’t involve the sufficient number of activities on mapliteracy can be said to have had negative effect on the development of theseskills. The research study is thought to be an important data source forfurther studies on this field. The content on map literacy can be increased incourse books for social studies. More activities on this issue can be employedin workbooks. More interesting maps, and in greater number, can be added insocial studies course books. Corners for maps can be designed in schoolcorridors or in classrooms. Social studies teachers can contribute to furtherdevelopment of these skills by using various activities and materials whileteaching the topics related to map literacy.
