  • Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Teacher pedagogy in a New Zealand primary
           school

      Abstract: The practice of students bringing their own mobile devices (BYOD) to school is increasingly being used to leverage digital learning opportunities in New Zealand schools. This paper presents a summary of the findings from a case study that explored the experiences of three primary school teachers as they introduced BYOD into their classrooms for the first time. The aim of the study was to understand the impact BYOD had upon their pedagogical practices and to identify factors that influenced these practices. The paper includes recommendations for schools and teachers who may be considering implementing BYOD in the future.

  • O-tū-kapua (‘what clouds see’): A mixed reality experience bridging
           art, science, technology in meaningful ways

      Abstract: Mixed Reality learning environments can provide opportunities to educationally enhance previously isolated scientific concepts by using art and technology as mediums for understanding the world. Participatory experiences provide a kinetic means of comprehending often-abstract knowledge, creating the conditions for sensory learning that is inclusive and accessible. The O-Tū-Kapua (what clouds see) Mixed Reality experience provides an inverted view of the environment. Rather than us looking up towards the sky, the clouds look down upon us. Atmospheric science is personified through an intertwined narrative that begins with creative action. Participatory learning embedded within technology-enhanced education creates opportunities to question how as educators we can create opportunities for integrating art, science and technology, enhancing our ability to capture young people in conversations about the socio-ecological Anthropocene.

  • Devices, distractions and digital literacy: ‘Bring your own
           device’ to polytech

      Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the ways polytechnic students use personal mobile devices to support their learning. This study used purposive sampling and mixed methods to generate data about student ownership and use of mobile digital devices within a single institution. Findings reveal patterns of device ownership, insights into how students use devices in class, and a comparison between student and tutor perceptions, including both conflicting assumptions and shared concerns. Implications are suggested for managing devices and distractions, enhancing digital literacy for both students and teachers, and pedagogical development.

  • Using mobile learning in free-choice educational settings to enhance
           ecological literacy

      Abstract: This article presents the case for using mobile technologies to facilitate the integration of classroom and outside-of-classroom learning experiences designed to enhance the ecological literacy of primary school students and their parents. There is growing evidence supporting the transformative potential of mobile learning technologies and tools within education settings to deliver meaningful learning experiences. We argue here that this potential could extend to integrating learning between the classroom and education outside the classroom (EOTC). We further argue that this mobile learning potential can mediate learning between students and their parents, visitors and educators at free-choice learning settings. We situate our argument within learning to enhance ecological literacy and call for studies that can consider the possibilities offered by mobile technology and related pedagogical frameworks, the reinforcement of learning experiences post a visit to a free-choice setting, and the integration with hands-on and non-technology mediated learning instances. Here we present some key theoretical considerations as a prelude to a study being funded by the Teaching and Learning Research Initiative to examine these possibilities.

  • Using mobile phones in support of student learning in secondary science
           inquiry classrooms

      Abstract: This paper reports on findings from a research project concerned with how electronic networking tools (e-networked tools), such as the Internet, online forums, and mobile technologies, can support authentic science inquiry in junior secondary classrooms. It focuses on three qualitative case studies involving science teachers from two high schools together with their Year 9 and Year 10 classes. The ways teachers and students view and take up the affordances of mobile phones to support authentic science inquiry are of interest. Data were collected from teacher reflections, student interviews, a student survey, classroom observations and student work. The findings highlight three key themes that illustrate the advantage of using mobile phones as part of the classroom culture to video record group practical investigations, support students’ developing abilities to think like a scientist, and enable the sharing of learning beyond the classroom. The findings have implications for practice and can contribute to a better understanding of the ways mobile devices can support and extend science inquiry in New Zealand secondary classrooms.
