Fractions in the 4th Grade Students

    • Authors: Özlem Atalay; Ebru Güveli
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to determine the problem posing abilities of 4th grade students on fractions using computer animations. This work was conducted with twenty seven fourth grade students in a state school in Bingöl. As the data collection method problem posing data scale, semi-structured interview forms and some worksheets have been used. The study shows that computer animations help positively posing problems of students related to rational numbers. The students, who can not pose problems in “Right” category, make use of unit fraction and equal fractions and face the problems in the stage of create a problem. Also, students have diffucilty correlating between inputs and results. Students, who can pose problems in the “Right” category, can pose more complex and original rational problems and better understanding by using in rational operation such as addition, subtraction and modelling. Besides that, students expressed that they are willing to work with computers, especially in abstract subjects and computer animations help to improve the ability of problem solving.

  • An Investigation of the Activities in Science Textbooks in terms of the
           Concept of Entrepreneurship

    • Authors: Hasan Bakırcı; Kübra Öçsoy
Abstract: The Ministry of National Education (MoNE) has included the concept of entrepreneurship under the skills of life in the Science Curriculum since 2013-2014 academic year. With the inclusion of entrepreneurship concept, it can be said that it is important to investigate the activities included in textbooks in terms of entrepreneurship according to teacher opinions. Within this context, this study aims to take the teacher opinions on appropriateness of the activities in the science textbook to the concept of entrepreneurship. This study was designed according to the qualitative research approach. The study was carried out with voluntary participation of 10 science teachers who work in different middle schools in Van province center. Semi-structured interview forms were used as data collection tools in the study. The obtained data were analyzed using the content and descriptive analysis. According to findings, more than half of the science teachers participating in the study reported that the activities were sufficient to improve the entrepreneurial skills of the students, but the others indicated that the activities were insufficient. Teachers also think that activities related to physics and biology will contribute more to students' entrepreneurial skills. Teachers stated that activities related to chemistry subjects had less effect on students' entrepreneurial skills. It is suggested that researchers should study more widely at different times to reveal the effectiveness of the study.

           Teachers’ Opinions

    • Authors: Şule Polat; Murat Özdemir
Abstract: In this study, it was aimed to examine the relationship between the job characteristics of teaching profession, work-life balance of teachers and teachers’ intention to leave the profession according to the opinions of candidate teachers. The study group was composed of 225 candidate teachers working in public high schools in nine districts of Ankara in the academic year of 2015-2016. The data were collected via “the Job Characteristics of Teaching Profession Scale (JCTPS)” and “the Intention to Leave the Profession Scale” which were developed by the researcher and “the Work Life Balance Scale”. The data collected from the participants were analysed by using descriptive statistics such as arithmetic mean and standard deviation, as well as confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), Pearson’s correlation analysis and regression analysis. The findings revealed a significant correlation between the job characteristics of teaching profession, work-life balance and ıntention to leave the profession. The results of regression analysis showed that there is a moderate and meaningful relationship between the dimensions of the job characteristics of teaching profession and work-life balance, and intention to leave profession. When the findings are evaluated as a whole, it is concluded that the candidate teachers have intentions to leave the profession, in which the job characteristics of teaching profession and the work-life balance are important factors.

  • Examination of TIMSS Mathematics Data with Multilevel Measurement Models
in Respect to Content, Cognitive and Topic Areas

    • Authors: Önder Köklü
Abstract: This research study aims to identify TIMMS 8th grade mathematics item groups and the specification of items in which Turkish 8th grade students have signıfıcantly lower level of correct responses compared to all other 8th grade participants. For this purpose, total 260 (82 from 1999, 88 from 2007, and 90 from 2011)  items released by International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) were grouped according to cognitive, content and sub-content domains. Then, mean correct responses of released items for each participant country were obtained from IEA’s yearly almanac. Finally, data were analyzed by using Multilevel Measurement Models and differences in achievement levels between Turkish 8th graders and their peers from other participating countries were predicted and tested in the context of item groups. Analysis of data showed that performance of Turkish students statistically significantly lower than performance of students from rest of the other participant countries in Number (Content Domain)-Fractions and Decimals (Topic Area)-Knowing (Cognitive Domain) item group. Detailed investigation revealed that students generally fail in procedures in fractions and conversions among fraction, decimal, and percent.

  • Teaching Ninth Grade “Biological Diversity and Protection” Topic Using
Stations Technique and Satisfaction of the Students from the
           Implementation

    • Authors: Duygu Kara Ekemen; Ali Derya Atik, Figen Erkoç
Abstract: Replacement of instruction-based and passive student methods and techniques with new educational approach facilitating students active participation is important to ensure effective, long-lasting learning. Stations technique contends work where students are active in the learning and teaching process and participate by exploring and effectively involve in the process. This study was carried out during the 2015/2016 spring term academic year in Şereflikoçhisar province of Ankara, in Tuz Gölü Anatolian High School, 9th grade students (N = 31). Teaching “Biological Diversity and its Protection” topic in the 9th grade curriculum was delivered using stations technique during six instruction hours. Biological diversity topic was chosen since it is taught during the last period of the semester and it is very important. The objective of this study is to determine students’ level of satisfaction and pleasure from the stations techniques used to teach biological diversity topics. To this aim, Stations Technique Satisfaction Instrument (İMTÖ) was developed by researchers and applied. Our results showed that the students were satisfied with the stations technique, enjoyed working at the stations, felt comfortable; however it was somewhat tiring. The stations technique provided active participation of the students to the process, improved their motivation and encouraged group work, therefore it can be applied to other topics and courses.

  • Relations between Executive Functions and Intelligence in Gifted Children

    • Authors: Ahmet Bildiren; Mediha Korkmaz, Nagehan Demiral
Abstract: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between psychometric intelligence level (WISC-R) and executive functions measured by Wisconsin Card Mapping Test (WKET) in gifted children. The sample of the study consisted of 50 students, 22 girls (44%) and 28 boys (56%), all of whom diagnosed as gifted at İzmir Sıdıka Akdemir Science and Art Center (BİLSEM). The Wisconsin Card Matching Test was applied individually to highly skilled children in a computer environment. The results of the study revealed that there is a relationship between WISC-R Verbal IQ and WKET in Verbal IQ 114-130 in gifted children, that there is no general relationship between Performance IQ and WKET and that WKET subscales differ significantly by age. An exploratory factor analysis was performed on the WKET scores in the sample group. Two basic factors were found as the result of the principal components and varimax rotation analyses. According to the PCA results, factor 1 has 6.27 eigenvalues and accounts for 57% of the total variance. These results indicate that the WKET factor structure is valid for gifted children.

  • An Investigation of Primary Mathematics Curricula in Terms of Exercises: A
           Historical Analysis

    • Authors: Mehmet Fatih Özmantar; Gülay Agaç, Şükrü İlgün
Abstract: This study aims to make a comparative analysis of the curricula documents put into practice during the Turkish Republican period in terms of exercises as part of instructional arrangements. The data set for the study was the main official curricula documents published during the Republican period. The study employed document analysis method and the documents were examined with content analysis technique. The analysis of the data yields three main categories with regard to exercises: objectives, features and teaching arrangements. The comparative analysis pointed out that there was an increasing emphasis on and importance attached to the exercises until 1990’s. However, after then, there appeared a gradual and steady decrease in the emphasis placed on exercises. These findings were considered in the light of three main movements, whose effects were all too apparent in mathematics education: behaviourist learning, meaningful arithmetic and constructivism. We argue that these movements contributed to the interpretation of the relative importance of exercises for teaching mathematics and this, in turn, affected the curricular arrangements through the years. The paper concludes that exercises and relevant arrangements are a greatly neglected area of the curricula developed especially after 2000 and that the future program development efforts should pay attention to eliminate this deficiency with the incorporation of carefully designed and planned practice work.
