  • Nutritional Recovery Outcome among Moderately Malnourished Under-five
Children in Communities Implementing Positive Deviance - Hearth or
Community Health Workers’ Nutrition Promotion Approaches in Karusi and
           Kirundo Provinces, Burundi
    • Authors: Chantal Inamahoro, Juliet Kiguli, Fredrick Edward Makumbi, Gakenia Wamuyu-Maina, Henry Wamani
Abstract: The Positive Deviance - Hearth (PD-H) approach is important in controlling malnutrition; however, there is limited data on its effect in improving nutrition status. Objective: To assess the effect of PD-H and community health worker nutrition promotion (CHWNP) in improving nutrition status and recovery among the moderately malnourished under-five (MMU5) children in Burundi. Methodology: PD-H and CHWNP approaches were used in Karusi and Kirundo provinces, respectively. MMU5 children were enrolled at baseline for the intervention (PD-H, (358) and usual care (CHWNP, (310). Haemoglobin level and anthropometric indicators (MUAC, wasting, underweight and stunting) were taken at baseline for 12, 60 and 120 days. Changes in nutritional recovery were compared within groups exposed to each approach using ANOVA for continuous outcomes and chi-square for categorical outcomes. Further analysis compared changes between the two groups exposed to the two approaches using random effects logistic models for binary outcomes and mixed effect models for continuous outcomes. Results: The MMU5 children discharged cured after 60 days and at 120 days follow-up. When compared with the baseline, this was statistically significant in both CHWNP and PDH groups on anthropometric indicators (wasting, underweight, stunting, MUAC and weight) but not anaemia. After controlling for socio-demographic factors, MMU5 enrolled in CHWNP were more likely to be discharged cured than those in PD-H with respect to moderate wasting (AOR=2.74, 95% CI= 1.19-6.29), underweight (AOR=1.56, 95% CI= 1.01-2.43) as well as MUAC (AOR=1.21, 95% CI= 0.49-3.00). Conclusion: Both CHWNP and PD-H significantly improved nutrition status and recovery. However, the proportion of those who recovered was significantly larger in CHWNP compared to PD-H.

  • Improving Financial Service Delivery to Communities through Micro-finance
Institutions in Uganda; the case of Pride Micro-finance Limited (PML)
    • Authors: Joseph Wamema, Joseph Othieno
Abstract: This study examined the design of a target Enterprise Architecture (EA) that can enable Micro-finance Institutions (MFIs) in Uganda improve financial service delivery to communities through use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Pride Micro-finance Limited (PML) was investigated with specific focus on their mission and goals, business processes, information/data, applications, actors, and technological infrastructure. Data was collected from two branches of PML using questionnaires, observation and document reviews. This data was analysed qualitatively and the results of the analysis indicated that PML faces a number of challenges in financial service delivery; like inability to reach out to its customers in a cost effective manner, inefficient ways of processing customer information, and data/information security risks. Based on findings from this study, a target EA capable of enabling PML reach out to its customers in a more sustainable, efficient, and effective manner was designed and recommendations for its implementation made.

  • South Korea’s Development Success: Lessons for Uganda
    • Authors: Denis Musinguzi
Abstract: From a least developed and aid receiving country to a developed and donor country within six decades, South Korea represents one of the unprecedented world‘s phenomenal and remarkable development experience. A combination of political and economic elements has been the key driver behind Korea‘s development success. Traditional and contemporary factors worked symbiotically to accelerate Korea‘s miraculous economic development and rapid socio-economic transformation. Traditional factors include prodigious savings, focus on exports, investment in human and infrastructure capital, strong macroeconomic policies, and a capable government with a long-term development vision. Contemporary factors include effective economic planning, strong business-government links, investment in research and development, adaptable economic policies and an emphasis on tertiary education. Through effective usage of aid that it benefitted from, Korea now extends the same generosity to developing countries, including Uganda. The article explores this unprecedented and miraculous‘ experience, and draws lessons for Uganda and other developing countries.

  • Eco-socio Impact of Mineral Resource Mining in the Karamoja Region of
           Uganda
    • Authors: Estellina Namutebi
Abstract: Mining is one of the prolific activities geared towards poverty eradication, but an elusive goal for most government leaders in developing countries. Oftentimes, the economic aspect of mining overshadows ecological and social needs in context of host communities. For that reason, Karamoja region has experienced violent ethnic conflicts, which has made it difficult to trust mining activities to transform the area and contribute to healing of the deep-seated animosity within ethnic groups. This study used interviews and focus group discussions among artisanal miners and the data obtained was content analysed. The outcomes indicated that mineral resource mining activities are still in their infancy, yet environmental degradation is visible and human rights violations and escalating disagreements between communities are also evident. Therefore, peaceful co-existence is a prerequisite between mining companies and the Karamajong to achieve sustainable eco-socio development in Karamoja region. Moreover, the local people‘s participation in mining activities is instrumental in achieving sustainable development.

  • Participatory Approaches to Unlocking Negative Perceptions on the Choice
and Motivation to be a Primary School Teacher in Uganda
    • Authors: Alice Wabule
Abstract: To achieve the goal of education for all, there is recognition of focusing on teacher's education to meet the increasing demand for qualified teachers. Many innovations have been implemented in Uganda to increase the number of trained teachers. However, despite this effort, there is concern about the declining numbers and the quality of candidates embarking on teacher education. This paper aims to show the social problem of low attraction to the teaching profession in Uganda. Based on empirical research, the paper explored a strategy for mitigation through a participatory action research approach which aimed at unlocking the negative perceptions and attitudes to the profession. It shows that teachers can secure a positive identity when taken through activities that make them feel recognised, valued and respected.

  • The Wellbeing of Somali Refugees in Kampala: Perceived Satisfaction of
           their Human Needs
    • Authors: Moses Senkosi Balyejjusa
Abstract: Although there is substantial research on the psychological wellbeing of refugees in psychology, especially in acculturation research, there is very little research assessing refugees‘ objective conditions of living. This study aims to bridge this gap by assessing the perceived satisfaction of Somali refugees‘ objective elements in Kampala, Uganda. Drawing on qualitative data from 92 Somali refugee and Ugandan participants, the paper shows that the participants assessed the perceived satisfaction of Somali refugees‘ four objective wellbeing elements (peace and security, housing, education and employment). These objective elements can be seen to represent human needs when analysed in relation to Doyal and Gough‘s (1991) theory of human need, particularly the intermediate needs. The study participants perceived most Somali refugees as having adequate satisfaction to these objective elements. In this paper I argue that this is the case because of the non-discriminatory and accepting host environment, Somali refugees‘ financial resources and the culture of social support. These are instrumentally important in promoting Somali refugees‘ wellbeing since they guarantee adequate satisfaction of the human needs of Somali refugees.

  • On Development and Democracy: The Willing and Unwilling Goers
    • Authors: Joseph Kisekka, David-Ngendo Tshimba
Abstract: This article argues that the question of what comes first between development and democracy is a settled question: each is a standalone though not an isolated phenomenon. The analysis put forth, therefore, is an attempt to comprehend some of the dynamics when the two phenomena interact. It is the article‘s contention that the force which seems to propel and relate the two is the very urge of the people to participate in the developmental and democratic process of their societies. In the final analysis, the article maintains that nowhere in the world have the two phenomena (development and democracy) ever been achieved or received on a silver plate. The powers that be must use their authority to guide even to the point of coercing the Unwilling Goers‘ to significantly participate in the development and democratic process of their communities.
