  • Editorial 33(5): Why can’t I crack the code to getting

      Abstract: AJET is the premier journal in Australasia which publishes manuscripts related to technology enhanced learning and teaching in post-secondary education settings. As a result the journal recieves a large number of submissions of which only 30% actually get sent to review. This editorial explains common and ultimately avoidable issues that result in a large number of the 70% of rejections. This issue also contains eleven articles written by 27 authors who hail from 21 institutions across seven nations. The articles range across a diverse technologies, learning contexts, instructional designs, and research methodology. While there is no thematic organisation of this issue, the articles serve to remind us of the broad area of research in educational technology. In this field we continue to refine our understanding of the complex relationship between technologies and teaching as well as learning, a task made more challenging by diverse contexts and constant evolution and innovation in digital technologies themselves.

  • Expert views on TPACK for early literacy: Priorities for teacher education

      Abstract: Technology applications can make important contributions to improving learning outcomes in the domain of early literacy. However, to fully exploit the potential of educational technologies, teachers must have specific knowledge and skills. This study aimed to articulate the technological pedagogical content knowledge teachers need to make effective use of technology for early literacy. Through three rounds of expert consultation using a Delphi study approach, key priorities for the education of lower primary school teachers, especially those teaching kindergarten, were articulated. The results of the Delphi study show expert consensus on the importance of educating pre-service teachers about: electronic books and educative television; explicit goals and task-focused instructions using specific tools; how to shape technology-rich classroom interactions; and how to integrate computer activities in language teaching. Experts stress the importance of developing age-appropriate teaching skills and critical consideration of the value of technologies for specific learning goals. When this critical stance is lacking (e.g., using technology for entertainment, or substitution of existing activities), they recommend against technology use in kindergarten. These findings can help teacher education programs offer pre-service teachers adequate opportunities to develop the technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge needed for effectively using technology in the domain of early literacy.

  • Wikis for group work: Encouraging transparency, benchmarking, and feedback

      Abstract: Technology is recognised as playing a part in the changing landscape in higher education; altering delivery modes and providing flexible opportunities for learning. Research into the use of wikis has shown that they provide many opportunities for student learning and the development of twenty-first century skills, however, there has been limited success in their use for collaboration. In this exploratory research, we report on a group wiki project in an engineering management unit at an Australian university. A wiki was introduced to replace the existing group report assessment to add transparency to the task. Each group had their own wiki and students were required to provide feedback to other group wikis which enabled transparency of students’ report development and group progress. The research aim was to investigate student perceptions of using a wiki. Students found the wikis helpful for benchmarking their activity against their peers. Students stated that peer feedback had improved their work; however, much of the feedback given by peers was too brief to be constructive, and provided too late to be useful in guiding their work. This paper will be of interest to academics interested in using wikis in their teaching to develop feedback, transparency, and benchmarking.

  • Students’ perception of a flipped classroom approach to facilitating
           online project-based learning in marketing research courses

      Abstract: This study investigated students’ perception of a flipped classroom approach to facilitating online project-based learning (FC-OPBL) in a marketing research course at a technical university. This combined strategy was aimed at improving teaching quality and learning efficiency. Sixty-seven students taking a marketing research course were surveyed. Mixed methods research was adopted along with questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, online learning notes, and online discussions to understand the students’ perception of the teaching strategy used during the learning process. Results showed that FC-OPBL may enhance students’ learning effectiveness, learning motivation, and learning interest, as well as encourage diverse development and teamwork. Finally, suggestions are proposed related to flipped classroom research and instruction.

  • A study of students’ attitudes towards using ICT in a social
           constructivist environment

      Abstract: This study aims to examine the factors that support or hinder students’ attitudes towards using information and communication technology (ICT) in problem-based learning (PBL) using the technology acceptance model (TAM) (Davis, 1989) among polytechnic students. A total of 737 first-year polytechnic students in Singapore participated in the cross-sectional survey study by completing a questionnaire (The assessment of attitude and intention to use ICT tools among polytechnic students), which gathered both quantitative and qualitative data. Based on the analysis of the quantitative data, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are found to be significantly and positively correlated with attitudes towards using ICT. Results from the analysis of the qualitative data suggest five major themes (engagement, communication, information gathering, collaboration and efficiency) on what students enjoyed most about using ICT. On the other hand, Internet connectivity, usability, technical issues and ICT competency are the four other themes that categorised the difficulties students faced using ICT. An important implication is to develop polytechnic lecturers’ competency in the use of ICT-enabled learning tools as a priority to enable them to successfully integrate ICT in their PBL lessons.

  • Use of a post-asynchronous online discussion assessment to enhance student
           critical thinking

      Abstract: Asynchronous online discussion (AOD) is used in many tertiary education courses, and assessing it has been shown to enhance critical thinking outcomes. There has, however, been debate on what should be assessed and how the assessment should be implemented. The most common form of assessment involves grading the individual discussion contributions, but it has been suggested that employing a culminating task based on the AOD may be effective. This preliminary study compared the effect on student critical thinking of two approaches to AOD assessment: using a post-AOD assessment, and assessing the discussion contributions themselves. The results, though tentative, showed that while both assessment approaches resulted in significant improvements in student critical thinking, there was no difference in the impact on critical thinking skills between using the post-AOD assessment and assessing the discussion contributions. This result suggests that the form of assessment used in an AOD may be less important than the fact that assessment is included. Interviews with students also provided some insight into ways in which they perceived the discussion environment had contributed to their critical thinking skills. The findings of this study pave the way for further research in this important area.

  • University students’ perceptions of social networking sites (SNSs) in
           their educational experiences at a regional Australian university

      Abstract: Higher education institutions, and the way education is delivered and supported, are being transformed by digital technologies. Internationally, institutions are increasingly incorporating online technologies into delivery frameworks and administration – both through internal learning management systems (LMS) and external social networking sites (SNSs). This study aims to explore how higher education students in a regional Australian dual-sector institute use and manage SNSs for personal and study-related activities and their perceptions of how this impacts their educational experiences. This mixed-methods study involved a quantitative and qualitative survey of 355 vocational training and higher education students and in-depth focus groups with ten higher education students. Four key themes were identified through thematic analysis: SNSs as a tool for fostering peer connectedness with fellow students; deliberate and distinct variation between personal and educational use of SNSs; resistance to external SNSs within education settings; and, need for a balance between digital and face-to-face learning and connectedness. Implications for curriculum design and delivery, and development of support for students in diverse learning contexts, are considered.

  • What do students think about SNS in education' University students’
           perceptions, expectations and concerns regarding educational uses of SNS

      Abstract: Social network sites (SNS) have become a popular technology topic in recent years and are currently used in educational environments. Although SNS have attracted much scholarly attention, students’ experiences with and expectations about SNS uses in education have not been deeply explored. This study investigates educational uses of SNS by analyzing university students’ perceptions, experiences, expectations, and concerns. A mixed method approach was used. The participants were 206 Turkish university students aged 18-28. As a quantitative data collection tool, “the social networking use survey” was employed. To better understand the students’ perceptions, expectations, and concerns about using SNS for educational purposes, face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 58 participants. The results of the study reveal that the students actively used SNS for different purposes. The participants also exhibited positive perceptions of SNS use for educational purposes. Among the biggest expectations is that instructors would share materials using SNS. When the students’ general expectations were examined, notably different results were obtained. The greatest concern of the students was that their posts could be seen by their instructors. All of the research findings are discussed in a detailed manner.

  • Eco-dialogical learning and translanguaging in open-ended 3D virtual
           learning environments: Where place, time, and objects matter

      Abstract: The purpose of this research was to explore the relationships between design, learning, and translanguaging in a 3D collaborative virtual learning environment for adolescent learners of Chinese and English. We designed an open-ended space congruent with ecological and dialogical perspectives on second language acquisition. In such a space, sense-making is contingent on the relational dynamics of place, activities, and artefacts. These spaces encourage meaning-making in situ, manipulation of virtual objects within places, and coordination among players. Our investigation looked at how learners of Chinese and English collaborated on a project in which they decorated a virtual living room. The findings suggest that socioculturally bounded places afford unique learning opportunities. Firstly, learning occurred through referencing, which is the mutual clarification of a virtual object’s meaning, position, and function, in relatively stabilised places, such as a museum, and secondly, learning occurred through coordination between verbal instruction and object manipulation in more adaptive places, which we call eco-dialogical learning. We also found a strong relationship between translanguaging and object manipulation. We conclude the paper from the perspective of how the eco-dialogical model resulted in designs that promoted cognition and interactivity.

  • Exploring the factors affecting learners’ continuance intention of MOOCs
           for online collaborative learning: An extended ECM perspective

      Abstract: The purpose of this paper was to investigate what factors influence learners’ continuance intention in massive open online courses (MOOCs) for online collaborative learning. An extended expectation confirmation model (ECM) was adopted as the theoretical foundation. A total of 435 valid samples were collected in mainland China and structural equation model (SEM) approach was adopted. The descriptive statistics show that platforms from abroad, such as Coursera and Khan, are more popular than native ones in mainland China. The empirical results show that the effects of three ECM factors (satisfaction with prior learning experience, confirmation with prior learning experience, and perceived usefulness) are significant. Different factors have different predicting power. Knowledge outcome is the first powerful indicator of learners’ continuance intention of MOOCs, followed by social influence, learners’ satisfaction with prior learning experience, and performance proficiency. The effects of knowledge outcome, performance proficiency, and social influence are significant, showing the success of extended ECM.

  • Designing and integrating reusable learning objects for meaningful
           learning: Cases from a graduate programme

      Abstract: E-learning quality depends on sound pedagogical integration between the content resources and lesson activities within an e-learning system. This study proposes that a meaningful learning with technology framework can be used to guide the design and integration of content resources with e-learning activities in ways that promote learning experiences, characterised by five dimensions: active, constructive, intentional, authentic, and collaborative. The pedagogical uses of these meaningful learning dimensions to support the design and integration of reusable learning objects as content resources will be explicated and exemplified through three cases related to the instruction of theories, principles, and professional skills respectively in a graduate programme. Design notes and surveys of students’ perception of learning experiences are used as data sources to understand how the five meaningful learning dimensions are being implemented by instructors and perceived by students. The strategies for supporting meaningful learning with reusable learning objects in higher education contexts are discussed.

  • Designing for student-facing learning analytics

      Abstract: Despite a narrative that sees learning analytics (LA) as a field that aims to enhance student learning, few student-facing solutions have emerged. This can make it difficult for educators to imagine how data can be used in the classroom, and in turn diminishes the promise of LA as an enabler for encouraging important skills such as sense-making, metacognition, and reflection. We propose two learning design patterns that will help educators to incorporate LA into their teaching protocols: do-analyse-change-reflect, and active learning squared. We discuss these patterns with reference to a case study utilising the Connected Learning Analytics (CLA) toolkit, in three trials run over a period of 18 months. The results demonstrate that student-facing learning analytics is not just a future possibility, but an area that is ripe for further development.
