  • Addressing technology integration concerns: Asynchronous video mentoring
           between pre-service teachers and exemplary technology-using in-service
           teachers

      Abstract: Research has identified that pre-service teachers have concerns about technology integration (e.g., their future school would lack technology resources; technology is not applicable in their subject areas). Mentoring has been highlighted as a means of overcoming these concerns. In this study, we present and investigate one strategy – an asynchronous video mentoring session between a class of 199 pre-service teachers and four exemplary award-winning technology-using in-service teachers. A small group of the pre-service teachers (n = 31) voluntarily expressed their concerns. The four in-service teachers were videotaped as they responded to these concerns. All 199 pre-service teachers watched the videos and described how the in-service teachers’ responses either alleviated or increased their concerns. A majority of the pre-service teachers (58%) reported that their primary concerns regarding technology integration were less acute after they watched the teachers’ presentation. Teacher education programs might consider the use of digital technologies to support student voices and increase the opportunities for interaction between pre-professionals and practising professionals.

  • Factors influencing peer learning and performance in MOOC asynchronous
           online discussion forum

      Abstract: Most studies on traditional asynchronous online discussion suggest that facilitating dialogue, that is, commenting forum activities, result in better learning and performance. However, due to open entry and diverse learner backgrounds, learner behaviour in massive open online courses (MOOCs) may be different. Viewing forum messages, which involves fewer mental and physical actions as well as less cognitive processing, rather than posting forum massages, might better match the learner’s study purpose. In this study, we investigated the effects of three common types of online MOOC discussion forum activities (viewing, voting and commenting) on student peer learning (peer reviews) and performance (quiz scores). We used stepwise regression models to analyse two data samples of a humanity and art MOOC provided by a private university in the United States for exploring factors influencing peer learning and performance. The results indicate that peer learning and performance were primarily predicted by viewing, and to a lesser extent by commenting. The three plausible explanations for the findings are the learner’s study purpose, weaker instructor-learner ties, and voluntary forum participation. We suggest ways to encourage viewing messages in forums and present limitations and further directions.

  • Factors related to college students’ self-directed learning with
           technology

      Abstract: This study investigated factors influencing college students’ self-directed learning with technology. A questionnaire was employed to obtain data from 153 college students on their self-directed learning readiness, the use of Web 2.0 tools for learning, online communication self-efficacy, and computer self-efficacy to predict their self-directed learning with technology. The data were analysed using sequential multiple regression and mediation analyses. The results showed that the predictor variables explained 19% of the variation in self-directed learning with technology. Self-directed learning readiness and the use of Web 2.0 tools for learning were found to be significant predictors of students’ self-directed learning with technology. Moreover, the results indicate that the use of Web 2.0 tools for learning significantly mediated the influence of students’ online communication self-efficacy and computer self-efficacy on their self-directed learning with technology. This study suggests that students be provided with scaffolding or assistance, not only for self-directed learning skills and the use of Web 2.0 tools for learning, but also for computer use and online communication in order to enhance their self-directed learning with technology.

  • Exploring intentional use of a technological proxy, Turnitin, to enhance
           student academic literacy practices

      Abstract: Current pedagogical practices have seen the rapid spread of technological tools that carry out tasks on behalf of the learner; we use the term technological proxy to refer to these tools. A popular technological proxy used by students worldwide is a text-matching software called Turnitin. Turnitin alerts users to sections of an assignment that appear to match materials that exist in some other published or previously submitted form. This paper reports on a small case study that examined how university students use Turnitin and the implications its use has on their academic literacy practices. Drawing on theories of intentional learning, achievement goal orientation theory, and self-efficacy theory, we applied think-aloud protocols and focus groups to elicit data on students’ interpretation and use of Turnitin feedback. Results show that the majority of students used the proxy with a performance goal orientation that focused on achieving a low similarity index. This dominating goal orientation is attributed to students’ low self-efficacy for using the program, and the university’s positioning of the program as a plagiarism tool. Hands-on experience with Turnitin contributed to a shift in using the program with intentionality.

  • Creating tools for inquiry-based mathematics learning from technological

      Abstract: This study employed the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) framework to guide the collaborative design process between preservice and practicing teachers. The teams designed technological pedagogical mathematics tools (TPMTs) for inquiry-based learning based on the syllabi for secondary mathematics. The content of the chat messages of preservice and practicing teachers was coded with different dimensions of TPACK to unpack the process of how the teams arrived at critical design decisions. The TPMTs were further evaluated by 30 practicing mathematics teachers, with respect to three criteria: (1) technology tools and curriculum goals, (2) technology tools and teaching activities, and (3) the fit between pedagogy and technology. The content analysis revealed that the collaborative design process involved three clear stages, demarcated by the different versions of the TMPTs: replacement, enhancement, and transformation. Practicing teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge played a crucial role in the design of pedagogically sound tools, and for refining the initial TPACK of preservice teachers. The subsequent evaluations supported the positive pedagogical values of the TPMTs. Overall, this study contributes to TPACK research with a case where the collaborative design process with distributed expert knowledge can be synthesised to create pedagogically sound technological tools for mathematics.

  • Understanding how university student perceptions of resources affect
           technology acceptance in online learning courses

      Abstract: The purpose of this empirical research was to use the perceived resources and technology acceptance model (PRATAM; Ku, 2009) to observe and measure students’ beliefs on using the WebCT online learning system (OLS) in two WebCT courses offered at a large university in the south-eastern United States. PRATAM was replicated from previous research to address the factors of perceived resources (R), perceived usefulness (U), perceived ease of use (EOU), attitude towards using, behavioural intention to use (BI), and actual system use (USE). The results show that the constructs of PRATAM explained the data well in both surveys conducted. This study makes a contribution to the literature on PRATAM by identifying and understanding the factors that influence students’ behaviours in response to the OLS. Moreover, it provides insights for administrators and instructional designers for improving students’ persistence and retention in online learning courses.

  • “You have to teach to your personality”: Caring, sharing and
           teaching with technology

      Abstract: Studies of teachers in higher education have acknowledged the relationship between teaching and teacher identity. Teacher identity is seen as dynamic, context-specific, and encompassing a teachers’ sense of meaning, values and self-esteem. This article considers the relationship between the values dimension of teacher identity and the use of technology. Using qualitative data from a multisite case study, it explores three aspects of the relationship between values and technology in teaching: firstly, the extent to which technology allows university teachers to share their values and their personality with students; secondly, the way in which technology affects the performance of teaching; thirdly, the ways in which teachers enact their care for and commitment to students though technology-mediated means. The article suggests that technology can be used in ways that teachers feel support or hinder their ability to communicate their values and shows how an individual’s use of technology may be shaped by aspects of their identity as a teacher.

  • Key factors in learners’ satisfaction with the e-learning system at the
           University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

      Abstract: This study aimed to identify key factors that have an influence on learners’ satisfaction with the e-learning system at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, using a modified, updated DeLone and McLean (D&M) (2003) model. The research model was tested against regression analysis using a sample of 153 enrolled students. The study found that system quality, instructor quality, and service quality had a significant positive effect on learners’ satisfaction, with service quality being the strongest predictor. However, course quality was found to have no significant effect on learners’ satisfaction with the e-learning system. The findings from this study will help institutions that are planning or implementing e-learning systems to enhance learners’ satisfaction and, consequently, increase systems success. The implications of these findings are discussed.

  • Flipping to engage students: Instructor perspectives on flipping large
           enrolment courses

      Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate instructor perspectives on the implementation of flipped classrooms in large enrolment classrooms. Five instructors teaching in different disciplines – ranging from mechanical engineering to sociology – were purposefully selected to provide in-depth analysis of the process of converting a traditional course to a flipped format. The findings indicated that flipped approach broke the social code of large enrolment courses by shrinking the instructors and empowering the students. Benefits and challenges the format brings are discussed and recommendations for implementation are provided.

  • Effects of digital game-based learning on achievement, flow and overall
           cognitive load

      Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in learning achievement, flow, and overall cognitive load between digital game-based learning (DGBL) and traditional computer-based learning (CBL). This study was conducted with 103 Taiwan college students: 50 college students in the experimental group used DGBL; 53 students in the control group used CBL. Results show the DGBL participants displayed significantly better learning achievement, flow, and lower cognitive load compared to the CBL participants. Learning achievement and flow exhibit a positive correlation, while negatively correlating with overall cognitive load. These results align with the existing research concepts of flow theory, cognitive theory of multimedia learning, and cognitive load theory.

  • Technology acceptance model in technology-enhanced OCLL contexts: A
           self-determination theory approach

      Abstract: One of the crucial issues for successful technology-enhanced out-of-class language learning (OCLL) is the learners’ continuance intention to use technology. Considering the strong mutual relationship between learners’ intention and motivation, the present study extended the technology acceptance model (TAM) with the self-determination theory (SDT) to investigate Japanese EFL learners’ intention to use learning technologies for OCLL. The study was conducted in a technology-enhanced OCLL environment using a web-based e-portfolio system. The hypothesised model included two principal antecedents of behavioural intention introduced by TAM – perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use – in addition to the three psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness introduced by SDT. Path analysis was conducted to find the multivariate relationships between the constructs in the model based on the collected data from 162 Japanese EFL learners. The results indicated that SDT determinants could significantly predict perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, among which perceived competence was the most influential factor. Furthermore, perceived usefulness highly influenced the learners’ intention to continue technology-enhanced OCLL, which in turn influenced their actual usage of the system.

  • An analysis of the Australasian Journal of Educational Technology
           2013-2017

      Abstract: The Australasian Journal of Educational Technology (AJET) changed its editorial policy in 2013, to focus on higher education research and on improving journal submissions. This study analyses all articles (n = 256) in AJET from 2013-2017 to determine if there has been any change in research topics, methodologies, citations, and authorship since this editorial change, and compares findings to the analysis by Hadlock et al. (2014). The present analysis revealed that the percentage of combined methods research has doubled, although the top 10 most cited articles continue to be predominantly interpretative and inferential. Research has become more student-centred and focused particularly on online collaborative learning environments, and teacher skill and knowledge development, although research gaps exist in mobile learning and gamification. The results also highlight a lack of international collaboration amongst authors, and this is an area for future research.
