  • Special Issue on Learning Design Research: Mapping the terrain

    • Authors: Eva Dobozy, Leanne Cameron
Abstract: Learning Design as a field of educational research and practice is gaining traction internationally. Not only is Learning Design now acknowledged as a complex and integrated process, demanding specialised knowledge and skills, it is a field of technology enhanced learning and teaching that is forward looking and globally focused. This special issue is unable to provide a unified position of what Learning Design is or resolve the debate, but it is able to contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of this field of educational research and practice. It also showcases some of the cutting edge work currently conducted internationally in Learning Design research and development

  • Identifying the characteristics of support Australian university teachers
use in their design work: Implications for the learning design field

    • Authors: Shirley Agostinho, Lori Lockyer, Sue Bennett
Abstract: Quality teaching is a strategic objective for universities; thus, there is an expectation that university teachers design high quality learning experience for their students. The field of learning design has developed over the past 15 years as a way to support teachers in their design work. There has been significant research and development work that has focused on creating support tools to help teachers plan, develop and deliver learning experiences. However, little is known about what supports teachers access and use when they design and overall how teachers undertake their design work. This paper presents the findings from a qualitative study that investigated the types of supports 30 teachers from 16 Australian universities reported using in their design work. Data was collected from semi-structured interviews, and the results show that participants accessed a variety of supports depending on their design need. The kind of support participants accessed in their design work were colleagues, literature, workshops and seminars, conferences, institutional support services, and enrolment in postgraduate study. How participants explained using these supports can be characterised as varied, personalised, dynamic and networked. Based on these results, implications for the learning design field are discussed with recommendations for future research.

  • 4FAD: A framework for mapping the evolution of artefacts in the learning
           design process

    • Authors: Juan A. Muñoz-Cristóbal, Davinia Hernández-Leo, Lucila Carvalho, Roberto Martinez-Maldonado, Kate Thompson, Dewa Wardak, Peter Goodyear
Abstract: A number of researchers have explored the role and nature of design in education, proposing a diverse array of life cycle models. Design plays subtly different roles in each of these models. The learning design research community is shifting its attention from the representation of pedagogical plans to considering design as an ongoing process. As a result, the study of the artefacts generated and used by educational designers is also changing: from a focus on the final designed artefact (the product of the design process) to the many artefacts generated and used by designers at different stages of the design process (e.g., sketches, reflections, drawings, or pictures). However, there is still a dearth of studies exploring the evolution of such artefacts throughout the learning design life cycle. A deeper understanding of these evolutionary processes is needed – to help smooth the transitions between stages in the life cycle. In this paper, we introduce the four-dimensional framework for artefacts in design (4FAD) to generate understanding and facilitate the mapping of the evolution of learning design artefacts. We illustrate the value of the framework by applying it in the analysis of an authentic design case.

  • A framework for self-determination in massive open online courses: Design
           for autonomy, competence, and relatedness

    • Authors: Neil Martin, Nick Kelly, Peter Terry
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a framework for the design of massive open online courses (MOOCs) based upon the principles of self-determination theory, which posits a relationship between intrinsic motivation and the basic psychological need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. We also report the results of design-based research that evaluates the application of the framework to a MOOC titled “Elite Sport Performance: Psychological Perspectives”. Satisfying basic psychological needs is theorised as central to course design in order to foster intrinsic motivation, optimise engagement, and improve the retention of course participants. We chronicle the design, implementation, and evaluation of the course, providing examples of support features and learning activities. The course was offered over a period of four months, receiving more than 1000 registrations from across the world. Engagement measures, completion indices, and intrinsic motivation scores are reported as well as sample testimonies from learners. Results offer preliminary evidence that a design framework incorporating self-determination theory has utility in the development of MOOCs that successfully engage learners.

  • Evaluation to support learning design: Lessons learned in a teacher
           training MOOC

    • Authors: Muriel Garreta-Domingo, Davinia Hernández-Leo, Peter B. Sloep
Abstract: The design of learning opportunities is an integral part of the work of all educators. However, educators often lack the design skills and knowledge that professional designers have. One of these basic skills is related to the evaluation of produced artefacts, an essential step in all design frameworks. As a result, evaluation of learning activities falters due to this lack of knowledge and mindset. The present study analyses how in-service educators perceived and accomplished an evaluation activity aimed at promoting assessment prior to enactment. Heuristic evaluation is an inspection method considered to be one of the easiest to learn and yet is efficient, time and cost effective. These characteristics make it suitable for the design work of educators; which is, above all, practice-driven and practice-oriented. Results show that educators grasped the value of such an activity (solving possible second-order barriers) but struggled to understand how to do the specifics of the task (first-order barrier), which was to define their own set of educational heuristics. Based on the lessons learned, the paper finalises with a proposal for a design task to include evaluation to support learning design; empowering educators to assess both existing learning activities and ICT-tools as well as their own designs.

  • Finding creative processes in learning design patterns

    • Authors: Robyn Louise Philip
Abstract: Bridging the gap between theory and practice in higher education continues to be problematic for educators. One potential means of addressing this problem and moving practice forward is to articulate and share learning designs created from the work of exemplary practitioners. This study offers a new representation of learning design which foregrounds creative processes. The learning design patterns are in text and visual format, and they reveal where creative processes reside in the learning process. The patterns are complemented by case study narratives, so there is an opportunity to bring significant insight to pedagogical practice. The designs were derived from an in-depth, qualitative study of exemplary practitioners who teach creatively and foster student creativity within either the creative industries or social sciences. Constructivist, informed grounded theory methods were used for the case study data collection and analysis that led to the construction of the patterns. The two case study examples chosen for discussion in this paper were distilled from blended learning units where online and face-to-face learning technologies were utilised. The learning designs discussed represent an original contribution to the field and have potential to be adapted to other disciplines, beyond those from which they originated.

  • CuVIS: An interactive tool for instructors to create effective customized
           learning designs with visualizations

    • Authors: Gargi Banerjee, Sahana Murthy
Abstract: Instructors face difficulty in creating student-centred, customized learning designs (LDs) for teaching with information and communication technology (ICT) tools such as visualizations (animations, simulations or videos). This problem is compounded for tertiary-level instructors teaching in instructor-mediated classrooms. In such classrooms, common in many parts of the developing world, students may not have 1:1 access with the visualization and have to interact with it via the instructor. Here, the instructors’ pedagogy becomes an important factor determining effective learning with the visualization. To address this problem, a set of design impediments faced by instructors in this context were first identified. Design guidelines were created to address these impediments. These guidelines evolved into the Customized Visualization Integration System (CuVIS). It is a wizard-like interactive tool that provides guidelines to instructors on how to create effective LDs that incorporate the principles of constructive alignment and meaningful learning with ICT, and is customized to instructors’ requirements. The effectiveness of CuVIS has been tested with instructors along multiple dimensions: usefulness and usability, impact on instructors’ pedagogical practice and impact on student learning when taught with CuVIS-generated LDs.

  • Informing learning design through analytics: Applying network graph
           analysis

    • Authors: Dirk Ifenthaler, David Gibson, Eva Dobozy
Abstract: Learning design has traditionally been thought of as an activity occurring prior to the presentation of a learning experience or a description of that activity. With the advent of near real-time data and new opportunities of representing the decisions and actions of learners in digital learning environments, learning designers can now apply dynamic learning analytics information on the fly in order to evaluate learner characteristics, examine learning designs, analyse the effectiveness of learning materials and tasks, adjust difficulty levels, and measure the impact of interventions and feedback. In a case study with 3550 users, the navigation sequence and network graph analysis demonstrate a potential application of learning analytics design. Implications based on the case study show that integration of analytics data into the design of learning environments is a promising approach.
