  • Using Social Media to Engage Nurse Practitioner Students in Complex Health
           Care Topics
    • Authors: Kelley Stallworth; DNP, WHNP-BC
Abstract: When developing curriculum, educators in advanced practice nursing programs often struggle to find innovative methods to build competencies outlined by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF, 2017a, 2017b) and introduce Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Essentials (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). Topics such as health policy and informatics can be particularly difficult to incorporate in learning activities. Faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing grappled with ideas to present various complex topics while keeping

  • Using Cooperative Teams to Engage Students in a Stadium-Style Setting
    • Authors: Lenora A. McWilliams; PhD, RN
Abstract: Baccalaureate nursing students must apply health promotion, disease prevention, and epidemiology concepts to populations across the life span (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). Cooperative learning is an active learning strategy based on social interdependence (SI) theory (Johnson et al., 2007). The basic premise of SI theory and what makes this different from other types of group work relates to the structure of interdependence used within groups. If groups are structured using positive (cooperative) interdependence, then group members believe they can be successful only if

  • Seven Specific Diseases: Increasing Engagement With a Collaborative
           Interactive Approach
    • Authors: S. Danielle Baker; DNP, RN, CNE
Abstract: Learning about disease processes in a traditional lecture format can be challenging and disengaging for prelicensure nursing students. Didactic nursing courses are often 3 to 4 hours in length, making it difficult for students to pay attention. Getting students involved in active learning classroom activities is a methodology that may enhance learning and contribute to examination outcomes (Shatto et al., 2019). This collaborative interactive teaching activity was designed to engage students in a prelicensure, Accelerated Masters in Nursing Pathway (AMNP) pathophysiology course about seven

  • Reinforcing Telehealth Competence Through Nurse Practitioner Student
           Clinical Experiences
    • Authors: Nicole Gibson; DNP, APRN, FNP-C
Abstract: As the American population continues to age, individuals age 65 years and older who reside in rural areas have increasingly complex health conditions (Baernholdt et al., 2012; Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2017; Meit et al., 2014; Rural Health Information Hub, 2017). In addition, access to health care services for rural residents continues to be a major challenge (Alverson et al., 2004). Telehealth has become a widely used health care delivery method of providing health care to patients by nurse practitioners (NPs) (Erickson et al., 2015; Young & Ireson, 2003). NP faculty

  • Using 360° Video to Enable Affective Learning in Nursing Education
    • Authors: Frank Donnelly; PhD, RN
Abstract: Both the original and the revised forms of Bloom's taxonomy have been significant contributors to curriculum development in many disciplines including nursing (Bloom, 1956; Krathwohl, 2002; Krathwohl et al., 1964). The taxonomy, which evolved over several years and with several different contributors, generally refers to three domains of learning: psychomotor, cognitive, and affective. With the psychomotor and cognitive domains representing skills and knowledge, the affective domain describes the components of learning that consider feelings, emotions, and attitudes. Although skills and

  • Integrating Mental Health Nursing in the Prelicensure Nursing Curriculum
    • Authors: A. Michelle Hartman; DNP, RN, CPNP
Abstract: According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2019), mental health includes one's emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It spans every age, gender, culture, and ethnicity. Holistic nursing care acknowledges the connection between an individual's mental and physical health. Nurse educators are charged with teaching students how to promote and protect the mental health of individuals, as well as caring for clients with mental illnesses. Dynamic changes in mental health care provision, as well as nursing education and pedagogy, require nurse educators to critically

  • Student Success Centers in Nursing Education: A Case Study Example
    • Authors: David A. Byrd; PhD
Abstract: The demand for RNs in the United States is projected to grow by 15% by 2026 (U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019). This is a large and accelerated rate of growth compared with other professions. During the same period, heightened attention on preventative medicine and the demand for services brought about by an expanding aging population will impel an anticipated 31% increase in the need for advanced practice RNs (i.e., nurse practitioners [NPs]). The primary contributing factors are an aging nursing force, the shortage of qualified nursing faculty for schools of

    • Authors: Anastasia Y. Rose; MEd, MSN/MHA, RN, CPAN
Abstract: In 2015, there were approximately 22 million veterans living in the United States, representing 7% of the population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). Yet, only 27% of veterans seek care in Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities (Bagalman, 2014). Although some nursing students may have opportunities to learn about veteran care through clinical placements in a VA system, it is important that all students be informed of the unique health care needs of this population because of the likelihood they will care for veterans in their future practice settings. These factors highlight the need for undergraduate

  • Exploring the Relationships Among Moral Distress, Moral Courage, and Moral
           Resilience in Undergraduate Nursing Students
    • Authors: Erin Gibson; PhD, RN, CCRN-K
Abstract: Moral distress poses a large threat to nearly all health care professionals and even goes beyond the health care realm (Jameton, 2017). Moral distress is a phenomenon that occurs when a person knows the correct action to take but is constrained from taking it (Jameton, 1984). Moral distress can be an experience prior to entering the profession in nursing school (Sasso et al., 2016). With the complexity of health care and continued growth of ethical dilemmas encountered in nursing practice, eliminating moral distress entirely is not practical (Rushton et al., 2017); instead, the focus

  • An Examination of Nursing Students' Knowledge About Organ Donation
    • Authors: Tobias Reynolds-Tylus; PhD
Abstract: Currently, there are more than 113,000 people in the United States who are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant (United Network for Organ Sharing, 2019). Every 10 minutes, a new name is added to the waiting list, and an average of 20 people die each day from the lack of available organs for transplant (American Transplant Foundation, 2019). Despite large public support (95% “support” or “strongly support”) for organ donation (Gallup, 2013), only 54% of American adults have registered as organ donors (Donate Life America, 2017).

  • Development of a Clinical Judgment Measurement Model-Based Simulation
Module for Ileus: A Mixed-Methods Study
    • Authors: Aeri Jang; PhD
Abstract: Ileus is a common and frequent occurrence after abdominal surgery (Chapman et al., 2018). Delays in its diagnosis and treatment may lead to life-threatening symptoms and complications, such as perforation (Murphy et al., 2016). Nurses should have professional competencies, with knowledge of clinical judgment being one competency, that would enable them to manage patients suffering from ileus. However, nursing students often have little to no clinical experience in managing ileus.
The importance of nurse involvement in patient diagnosis has been increasingly emphasized in recent years (Cahill

  • Gaming in Nursing Education: Recent Trends and Future Paths
    • Authors: Janet M. Reed; MSN, RN, CMSRN
Abstract: Nurse educators today are faced with increasing pressure to produce competent and safe graduate nurses who can function in an ever increasingly complex and diverse health care system. Due to limited experiences during clinical rotations for nursing students to practice the full scope of nursing care, many new nurses do not have the necessary clinical practice skills when they begin their first job. The majority of employers of newly graduated nurses are not satisfied with the entry-level clinical decision-making skills of new graduate nurses (Saintsing et al., 2011). To quantify this

  • No Longer Expert: A Meta-Synthesis Describing the Transition From
           Clinician to Academic
    • Authors: Jane S. Grassley; PhD, RN, IBCLC
Abstract: The United States faces a crisis in health care due to a growing need for a baccalaureate-prepared nursing workforce. The Institute of Medicine (IOM, 2011) set a 2020 goal to increase the proportion of nurses with a bachelor's degree or higher to at least 80% of nurses in the U.S. workforce. Between 2004 and 2017, the average proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree who were working in acute care settings grew from 44% to 56%. However, nursing faculty shortages have tempered this growth. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2019) estimated that in 2018, approximately

Since the publication of the article titled “Integrating the National Council of State Boards of Nursing [NCSBN] Clinical Judgment Model [CJM] Into Nursing Educational Frameworks” (Dickison et al., 2019), published in the February 2019 issue of the Journal of Nursing Education, we have become aware of some misunderstandings about the Model that are causing concern. Despite best efforts to give accurate information and clarify the issue, the misunderstandings have persisted; therefore, the purpose of this letter is to provide clarification.

  • Improving Diversity of the Nursing Workforce Through Evidence-Based
           Strategies
    • Authors: Tara D. Spencer; MS, RN
Abstract: Diversifying the nation's health workforce is a key component of strategies to increase access to quality health care for all populations, reduce health disparities, and achieve health equity. Diversity among health professionals improves patient-clinician interactions and communication, patient satisfaction, and access to care. In a 2004 report, the Institute of Medicine recommended increasing the number of minority health professionals by changing the culture of health professions schools (Sullivan, 2004).

  • Using Contemporary Fiction to Integrate QSEN Competencies Into a
           Foundational Nursing Course
    • Authors: Danielle Walker; PhD, CNE, RN
Abstract: Quality and safety are integral components of fundamental nursing courses but often can be abstract and complex for students who have little or no clinical experience. The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies provide a framework for purposeful teaching of quality and safety throughout the nursing curriculum (Mohn-Brown, 2017). Using contemporary fiction, students can think and act as a nurse in a classroom environment. The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients' Lives (Brown, 2015) relates the story of a nurse as she cares for four patients during a single shift.

    • Authors: Paula Baisden; EdD, RN, PMHRN-BC
Abstract: Undergraduate students face many potential distractions from their course-work, one of which is consistent access to their social lives via social media. Although consistent exposure to social media can increase procrastination of their studies, the same consistent exposure to course material can significantly improve retention of course content. Evidence shows that content delivered in a familiar platform also increases retention of information. Many theories, then, indirectly support the idea of using social media to help students study course content.

Abstract: Between 1998 and 2017, natural disasters killed 1.3 million people and left 4.4 billion injured, homeless, or in need of emergency assistance (Wallemacq & House, 2018). Destruction of critical infrastructure and health care systems caused by natural disasters is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality (Ryan et al., 2016). The displacement of large numbers of people into temporary shelters, compromised sources of water, and potential food shortages create conditions that increase the risk of communicable disease (Shukla et al., 2018). Population-focused competencies were developed to highlight NP competencies in broad content areas, listing of specific NP core competencies, and exemplars of curriculum content to support the competencies and content areas (NONPF, 2017). The suggested curriculum content was not intended to be required or exhaustive, but to provide guidance for meeting professional, practice, and leadership competencies.
