  • Screen Capture Recordings Enhance Connectedness Among Students, Course
           Content, and Faculty
    • Authors: Cheryl Toulouse; PhD, APRN, FNP-BC
Abstract: Learning environments are effective when students engage with the course content while having both direct and individualized faculty support. Faculty are the vital link that can increase the human presence in a course and student engagement with the course content. Human presence is the element in a course that lets students know the course is being taught by a real person and not a computer program (Whiteside et al., 2014). This can be achieved by providing opportunities for faculty and students to share information about themselves. For instance, an instructor can produce a course

  • Examining Grief Through Art
    • Authors: Jayne Josephsen; EdD, RN, CCCTM, CHPN
Abstract: Grief is an issue nurses respond to regularly and requires examination of personal experiences, biases, and beliefs for the nurse to meet the needs of a grieving patient or family (Schreiner & Wolf Bordonaro, 2019). Reflective examination of nursing students' personal grief experiences can prepare them to attend to patients and families facing grief. Educational activities that explore grief through the lens of the student's personal narrative and life story enhance critical examination of grief and the grieving process. This enhances the affective learning domain associated with

    • Authors: Cheryl L. Pullium; DNP, APRN, ACNS-BC
Abstract: Integrating the impact of the social determinants of health (SDOH) on individuals, families, and communities is vital in nursing education as the focus of nursing continues to shift toward population health (Thornton & Persaud, 2018). Traditionally, undergraduate nursing students are introduced to SDOH in course didactic content. However, the question remains whether didactic content alone is sufficient for nursing students to understand the real-life impact of SDOH. Transformational learning theory posits that reflection is essential for understanding; therefore, student clinical

  • Striving for Gerotranscendence: Preparing Nursing Students to Care for the
           Aging Population
    • Authors: Jillian Ciriello; MSN, RN
Abstract: As the number of older adults in America grows, the need for evidence-based geriatric care is also increasing. By 2060, nearly one in four Americans will be 65 years and older, and the number of adults over the age of 85 is projected to triple (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). Nursing students are entering the profession to care for this growing population, often without understanding the unique needs of older adults. Geriatric care is typically restricted to a few lessons set apart from the broader curriculum and comprising an estimated 5% of educational content (Negrin & Dahlke, 2019). Newly

Abstract: A body of literature exists relative to the rigor and quality of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) scholarly project (Becker et al., 2018; Durham et al., 2019; Roush & Tersoso, 2018; Terhaar et al., 2016) that serves as a foundation for future scholarly practice (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2006). The DNP graduate is expected to have the competencies and expertise to improve health care outcomes through translating evidence into practice. Nurse educators can promote and support DNP students in establishing a program of scholarship within the context of a

    • Authors: Christa Palancia Esposito; DNP, CNM
Abstract: Traditionally, undergraduate nursing education has been campus based, mainly due to the introduction of, and need for, the assessment of psychomotor nursing skills. Students have assimilated these skills with sustained experiences in clinical practica, caring for patients in various outpatient and inpatient settings. However, over the past decade, nursing education has been transforming through technology, simulation, and online learning. Student acceptance and adoption of technology has eased this transition to distance teaching and learning.

    • Authors: Melissa DeFoor; MSN, RN, CLD, LCCE
Abstract: Although telehealth has been readily available for many years (Smith et al., 2018), the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has created an environment where health care providers are increasingly using video-conferencing services to provide care while reducing the risk of exposure to the virus. Telehealth is defined as “the use of electronic information and telecommunication technologies in caring for clients” (HRSA, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2020, p. 1). Effective telehealth delivery by RNs can ensure quality client assessment, promote person-centered care, and address

Abstract: The outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the United States brought on significant challenges to the nation's health care systems. To mitigate the spread of coronavirus, strategies including social distancing and gatherings limited to no more than 10 individuals were released and were followed shortly afterward by stay-at-home orders by state governments (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020; Foster & Mundell, 2020). Health care systems across the country implemented revised meeting policies to maintain compliance with these recommendations, disrupting health care

  • Substance Use Education in Canadian Nursing Programs: A Student Survey
    • Authors: Marilou Gagnon; PhD, RN
Abstract: Substance use practice is a complex and fast-evolving field. Worldwide, we are noting upward trends in substance use (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2019) and seeing new issues emerge, including deadly overdose crises fueled by synthetic opioids (i.e., fentanyl) and overprescribing (Belzak & Halverson, 2018). Moreover, increases in alcohol and tobacco consumption (Peacock et al., 2018), as well as misuse of prescribed substances such as opioids, sedatives, stimulants, and anxiolytics among adolescents and young adults are also rising (Nolan et al., 2018; Siste et al., 2019).

  • Teaching Ethics in Classroom Settings: Nursing Faculty Perceptions in
           Baccalaureate Programs
    • Authors: Sharon Grason; PhD, RN

Many of these challenges have been embedded in ethical components, and the recognition of these ethical issues by nurses is critical to effectively care for a patient's needs (Crigger & Godfrey, 2014; Robichaux, 2012; Trobec & Starcic, 2015). Over the past decades, internationalization has become a prominent edifice in the higher education arena (Leask, 2009; Van Hoof & Verbeeten, 2005), partly in response to increasingly globalized societies and markets (Currie et al., 2013; European Parliament, 2016). Abstract: The majority (70% to 80%) of hospitalized patients require the placement of a vascular access device for intravenous therapy (Alexandrou et al., 2012; Zingg & Pittet, 2009). Peripheral intravenous (PIV) catheters allow venous system access for the infusion of fluids, medication, blood, or blood products (Hagle & Mikell, 2014). PIV catheter placement is one of the most frequent invasive skills performed by nurses working in hospitals (Ravik et al., 2017). Accurate placement and management of PIV catheters require significant knowledge, skill, and clinical judgement to reduce

  • Enhancing Cultural Competency: A Phenomenological Study
    • Authors: Fay Mitchell-Brown; PhD, RN, CCRN
Abstract: As the population in the United States diversifies, nurses have to be able to deliver care to patients who are from different cultural backgrounds. Currently, minority groups make up about 41.5% of the U.S. population (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2018). Hispanic or Latinos make up 18.1% of the U.S. population, and 39.1% of them live in California (U.S. Census Bureau Quick Facts, 2018). It is projected that by 2044, less than 50% of the U.S. population will be non-Hispanic White individuals (Bauer & Bai, 2018).

Personal experiences empower abilities to facilitate clients' accomplishment of ADs. The normalization of ACP and AD planning optimally begins during prelicensure programs. Without comprehensive preparation, nurses may not be prepared to advocate for client-centered care.

Abstract: Effective communication in health care is essential to ensure patient safety and improve patient outcomes. The use of a systematic rounding method can reduce opportunities for miscommunication and misunderstanding. The SBAR (situation, background, assessment, and recommendation) method is effective in enhancing communication among providers (Thomas et al., 2009). Although a successful method of communication for experienced providers, SBAR lacks the detailed body system review needed for novice advanced practice nursing students.

Lawmakers proposed certain benefits to legalized cannabis, which included the potential for decreased criminal activity through governmental regulation and oversight, the opportunity to generate tax revenues, and a reduction in government expenditures on law enforcement that addressed illegal cannabis consumption (Hajizadeh, 2016). Abstract: It has been well established that storytelling is part of what makes us human and the way that cultures throughout history have taught, learned, and built community (Lawrence & Paige, 2016). There is an increasing literature base supporting the use of storytelling in nursing education, especially when it is built around specific nursing practice models (Timbrell, 2017).
Nurse educators use storytelling as an aesthetic strategy to help students to understand their relationship to themselves and others, exploring, imagining, rehearsing, and reflecting on the reality of their nursing practice
