  • Use of ICT/Web Tools in ELT in Nepal

    • Authors: Chandra Prasad Acharya
      Pages: 1 - 16
Abstract: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become the integral part of English Language Teaching (ELT) to meet the needs of the present day world. It has brought significant changes in the traditional teacher-centered lecturing methods. However, this emerging field of study has not been researched rigorously in the context of Nepal. Considering this, the research study carried out at the Department of English Education, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu aimed to find out the commonly used ICT/Web tools in ELT and its positive impact on ELT practice. The sample size of the study consisted of 40 English teachers of private Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools of Kathmandu Valley. The informants were selected using judgmental non-random sampling from Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts in a proportionate way. A questionnaire consisting of both close-ended and open-ended questions was used as a data collection tool. The data were analyzed and interpreted descriptively and statistically. The result of the data obtained revealed that the ICT tools such as mobile phone, laptop, multimedia projector and web tools like YouTube, Facebook, wiki, email, blog are used in ELT and have positive impact on ELT.

  • Expectation of Tertiary Students of Bangladesh from ELT Classrooms

    • Authors: Saifa Haque
      Pages: 56 - 64
Abstract: Expectation influences motivation and performance in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Students’ expectation also plays a significant role in curriculum development. This paper focuses on the expectations of the students in an English language classroom and how they want to be taught. From a study on 45 students of Stamford University Bangladesh, the researcher tried to find students’ expectations about content, factors behind the expectations and effects of expectations in a language classroom using semi-structured interviews. It was found that students have expectations regarding their course content, teaching-learning style and education management. Several factors such as professional need, education background, social beliefs, personal goals and personality of the students worked behind their expectations and their expectations played a significant role in their classroom behavior and performance.

  • Using Non-native English Films to Promote Multiculturalism in ELT
           Classroom

    • Authors: Nazua Idris
      Pages: 65 - 76
Abstract: This paper aims to present how the incorporation of non-native English films can enhance the multicultural awareness among the English language learners. As the non-native English films expose the students to linguistic and cultural diversity, they can be used as effective tools in designing materials for ELT classroom. To demonstrate how teachers can incorporate these films in their classroom, the paper discusses various approaches to design materials for language classroom, and contains three sample lesson plans for intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced level students. The lesson plans exploit a number of non-native English films to generate a discussion of different cultures along with teaching English language. Finally, the paper ends with some suggestions for the teachers.

  • Negotiating the Local and Global in Nepalese EAP: Inherent Ideological
           Tensions and Possible Pathways

    • Authors: Madhav Kafle
      Pages: 77 - 87
Abstract: This article explores ideological tensions and possible directions to solutions in Nepalese EAP pedagogy in the context of increasingly interdependent world. Seventeen EAP professionals responded to a qualitative online survey disseminated through the Nepal English Language Teachers’ Association listserv, personal emails and other social networking sites. Data was analyzed from the perspective of language ideologies. The main ideological tensions as indicated by the teachers are grouped under three interrelated headings: top-down imposition, buying into Standard English as a panacea for all problems, and disconnect between policy and practice. Based on these findings, the article argues that whereas the top-down imposition is connected with the ideology of development, buying into Standard English with ideologies of linguistic fixity and purism, and the disconnect between policy and practice with the ideology of nationalism and language ownership.

  • Classroom Implementation Practices of the Secondary Level English
           Curriculum: A Case of Nepal

    • Authors: Manita Karki
      Pages: 88 - 98
Abstract: Curriculum is a whole educational programme to fulfil the objectives of national educational system that provides the fundamental frame for the teachers to teach in schools. The school level English language curriculum in Nepal aims at developing a comprehensive communicative competence in learners. This paper attempts to explore the extent to which English language teachers teaching at secondary level in Nepal understand the English curriculum and implement it in their classroom teaching. The paper is based on my graduate research project at Kathmandu University which involved eight English-language teachers from the Kathmandu valley for interview and observation to collect required information. The paper accomplishes the thesis that EFL teachers make sense of knowledge of curriculum at theoretical level; however it has not been utilized, as it should be, in their classroom practices.

  • Motivation and Learning English: A Study on Nepalese Public High School
           Learners

    • Authors: Suman Laudari
      Pages: 99 - 116
Abstract: Motivation is long found to be an important factor to affect the task of learning an L2 as it provides the stimulus required to initiate and sustain the task of learning the L2. It is even argued that if learners are motivated, they are likely to succeed in the task of language learning regardless of other factors. The present study examined the Nepalese public high school learners’ motivation to learn English. Based on Dörnyei’s (2005; 2009) second language (L2) motivational Self System as the theoretical framework, this study employed a 64 item questionnaire to collect the data. Correlation and regression were carried out to establish that the main factors affecting learners’ English language learning motivation were attitude to learning English and ideal L2 self. However, ought-to L2 self did not contribute to learners’ motivation directly, which is on the contrary to the findings of the study done in Asian contexts previously.

  • Examining the Discourse of Perfume Advertisements: An Analysis of the
           Verbal and the Visual

    • Authors: Vandana Lunyal
      Pages: 117 - 131
Abstract: In the world that promotes consumerism, companies are in a competition to produce a variety of commodities and to convert people into consumers of their products whether they need them or not. The abundance of consumer products is promoted through advertisements. These advertisements persuade the common people to become consumers for which they use a variety of strategies, the most common being the use of problem-solution format in language and an effective use of the verbal and the non-verbal. This paper focuses on investigating the verbal and the non-verbal aspects of the text to examine how ideological constructs function in the discourse of advertisingthrough the use of hegemony. A perfume advertisement has been selected for a detailed analysis of the verbal and the visual elements to illustrate how advertisers commonly attempt to transmit some underlying, yet unasserted, meanings to unsuspecting readers who may understand the intentions of the advertisers i.e. to promote consumption but may not understand that the aim is achieved by generally promoting cultural stereotypes which work towards the disadvantage of one social group vis-à-vis the other especially the one that the advertisement is addressed to. The tool for the analysis of the advertisement is Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis (CDA) that uses the analysis of the verbal and the visual to reveal ideological underpinnings. CDA also has pedagogical implications for instance the language used for describing products, if analysed critically by language learners, helps them to unfold the hidden meanings as is illustrated through the analysis.

  • Teachers’ Attitudes towards Critical Pedagogy and its Practice in
           ELT Classrooms

    • Authors: Jagqadish Paudel
      Pages: 132 - 146
Abstract: Critical Pedagogy (CP), a mode of pedagogy, aims to empower learners and provide justice by offering preferential options and deconstructing authoritative and logo centric tendency in education. The current study, by using a mixed methodological design (qualitative and quantitative), illustrates a group of Nepali English language teachers’ attitudes regarding CP in ELT, focusing on how they employ CP in their classrooms. For this research, a sample of 10 teachers was purposively selected from Baitadi and Dadeldhura districts. Five teachers’ classes were observed. Analyzing the data collected through a survey questionnaire, it was found that all the teachers are in favour of CP in most cases in ELT. Even if all the teachers were notionally appeared in favor of practicing CP in most of the aspects that were asked to them, quite contrary to it, observation results of the teachers’ classes revealed that they did not, in any real sense, embrace CP in their teaching practice. Hence, this study invoked the ELT teachers to embrace CP practically in the classrooms.

Abstract: Smart teacher smart class (STSC) is a portal developed by Dnet which contains curriculum, teachers’ guide, education policy, textbook, lesson plan, multimedia contents, and teaching-learning strategies on different subjects aiming to provide content and pedagogical support to the secondary school teachers in Bangladesh. Making an offline CD, the STSC portal is provided to the respective teachers of secondary schools Dnet works with. The regular use of the STSC portal helps the teachers to improve their knowledge about effective teaching-learning techniques. The study was designed as one group pre-test post-test quasi-experimental method to find the effect of STSC portal on secondary school English teachers’ English language teaching knowledge (ELTK). Twenty eight English teachers from 14 secondary schools were selected purposively to form the group and the tests were administered on them considering 6 months intervention (STSC portal) period. The test was adapted from Cambridge language teaching knowledge (TKT) test focusing on different ELT aspects. The tests scores of the teachers were categorized in 4 knowledge levels: limited, basic, deep and extensive. The findings of the study show that the STSC portal induces a significant improvement of the teachers’ ELTK. Most of the teachers showed better performances in the post-test than the pre-test. Moreover, significance (0.001) and effect size score (0.91) also depict a clear and large effect in enhancing teachers’ ELTK.

Abstract: This study examined the writing skill of the students at the undergraduate level, with a special focus on the use of prepositions of place, time and direction in English. The subjects of the study comprised of 100 randomly selected students of English literature from two Arts and Science colleges located in Coimbatore city. The data elicitation instrument was a guided cloze test in which the subjects were asked to fill the gaps using appropriate prepositions of place, time and direction. To analyze the collected data, socio-linguistic and descriptive methods were used. The results indicated that the students found more difficulties in the use of prepositions of place and direction than the prepositions of time because of their mother tongue interference. The findings imply that teachers should pay more attention while teaching the prepositions of place, time and direction and provide sufficient explanations about them to the students in the classroom.
