  • Toward an Agentic Approach to Activist Learning: The Interplay Between
Agency and Learning in the Narrative of Polish Activist
    • Authors: Anna Dorota Bilon
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
This article develops an agentic approach to activist learning and analyzes the interplay between agency and learning. The agentic approach derives from Alheit’s concept of biographical learning and Emirbayer and Mische’s concept of agency. The article builds on the case study of an activist’s narrative to show that the development of agency is not a linear process, and that no single unilateral relation was discernible between learning and agency. The interrelations between agency and learning are analyzed in the context of temporality, causation, and agentic dimensions. The article suggests a cycle of learning, action, and agency in activism as a framework for the study of activists learning.

  • Situating Adult Learning and Education in Refugee Livelihood Adaptation
and Progression Toward Self-Reliance: The Case of Refugees in the Kyaka II
           Settlement in Southwestern Uganda
    • Authors: Salome Joy Awidi, Kofi Quan-Baffour
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
Livelihood adaptation in refugee camps is often fragile and inherently problematic owing to their physical characteristics and policy restrictions. The Uganda refugee policy applauded as progressive exhibits internal contradictions which influence livelihoods. The purpose of this study is to explore the significant role of adult education in livelihood adaptation. The study used qualitative research methods of interviews and focus group discussions. Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting 70 participants from eight Common Interest Groups, of both refugees and Ugandan nationals. The findings indicate that access to agriculture extension education and financial literacy facilitates the acquisition of relevant skillsets for adaptation. The study concludes that adult education provides immediate, relevant skillsets for adaptation.

  • Introducing the Black Male Adult Learner Success Theory
    • Authors: Ramon B. Goings
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
Given the preponderance of deficit-oriented discourse about Black men and adult learners in higher education, there have not been theoretical frameworks put forth to explain the success of Black male adult learners in higher education. Thus, this article describes the Black male adult learner success theory, which builds on Gilman Whiting’s scholar identity model and Urie Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological system theory and was developed as a lens to examine the unique experiences of Black male adult learners in higher education and the impact of their various environments on their academic success. In response to the call for action from adult education scholars, this article introduces an asset-based theoretical approach for researchers to use when studying Black male adult learners. The article provides implications for using the Black male adult learner success theory for policy and practitioners. The article ends with providing future recommendations for research based on the theory.

  • “Branding Bildung”: Commodifying the Uniqueness of Popular
           Education
    • Authors: Andreas Fejes, Robert Aman, Sofia Nyström
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
Popular education has a long history in Sweden, dating back to the mid-1800s and having developed in close relationship with the state. This relationship has been sustained over the years by the way popular education is spoken of as being “unique”—as being complementary to formal education. In this article, we focus on how the uniqueness of popular education is shaped today, and how it operates to legitimize further support. We draw on Barthes’ notion of myth, analyzing interviews with managers, principals, study circle leaders and teachers working with adult asylum seekers and refugees at study associations and folk high schools. We argue that the myth of the uniqueness of popular education is made up of three rhetorical figures that are mobilized by a range of actors legitimizing state support for popular education. The myth thus becomes a “tool” that commodifies popular education, that is, that turns the myth into monetary funds.

  • What Strategies Do Less-Skilled Adult Readers Use to Read Words, and How
Aware Are They of These Strategies'
    • Authors: Janet McHardy, Elaine Chapman, Marnie O’Neill
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
Less-skilled adult readers have been found to be limited in their awareness and use of effective reading strategies. In this study, we aimed to (a) identify the strategies used by less-skilled adult readers that best predict word reading performance on standardized reading tests and (b) identify the word reading strategies that less-skilled adult readers reported using, as well as the extent to which these reports correlated with direct observations of reading behaviors. Results indicated that readers relied on six main strategies to read unknown words, but only two significantly contributed to prediction of actual word reading performance. These were also the two strategies that were most poorly understood by the readers. The findings emphasize the need for programs to incorporate methods to increase metacognitive awareness and strategy use in adults with reading difficulties.

  • Does Participation in Adult Education Increase Volunteering' An
           Analysis of British Longitudinal Data
    • Authors: Ina Elisabeth Rüber, Jan Germen Janmaat
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
High-quality longitudinal data from the UK Household Longitudinal Study gives us the opportunity to investigate whether participation in adult education (AE) fosters volunteering, and whether this depends on the volume of AE, its content, or on the qualification obtained with it. From a public enlightenment perspective, we would only expect to find an effect if the content of AE relates to social issues and domains relevant for volunteering. Yet theories emphasizing AE as a place of encounter and an activity that strengthens self-confidence would expect a positive effect regardless of the content but depending on the volume and the obtained qualification. Our results from a person fixed-effects model reveal a significant and positive effect of participation in AE on volunteering in general, while volume, content, and obtained qualifications appear to make no difference. These findings provisionally suggest that social interactions and self-perceptions explain civic returns to AE.

  • A Novel Viewpoint on Andragogy: Enabling Moments of Community
    • Authors: Nicole Note, Free De Backer, Liesbeth De Donder
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
While andragogy varies in meaning and practice from one country and context to another, it usually refers to the field of educating or guiding adults. This article reflects on a novel viewpoint and role for andragogy, taking as its starting point the broader European tradition that includes social welfare and community development. Central to its analysis is a new conception of community as moments of community that has been discreetly advanced in anthropological and continental–philosophical sources. It is argued that by contemplating and building on the great relevance of such moments andragogy can be made to play an innovative role in enabling moments of community in organizations, educational systems, neighborhoods, and society in general.

  • Challenging Neoliberalism Through Radical Adult Education in a Chilean
           Union School
    • Authors: John D. Holst
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
This article presents the results of a descriptive case study of the Union School of the Chilean nongovernmental organization (NGO) Alejandro Lipschutz Institute of Science (ICAL-Spanish acronym). The study contributes to the field of adult education by providing a contemporary example of what Gramscian pedagogy can look like. Theoretically, this case contributes Latin American social movement-based analysis of neoliberalism, and its impact on the nature of work for working-class people. The study presents an example of educational praxis; the dialectical relationship between theory and educational practice that emerges from ICAL’s efforts to advance the Chilean union movement’s struggle to challenge neoliberalism through educational and leadership development work. John D. Holst is an Associate Professor in the Lifelong Learning and Adult Education Program at The Pennsylvania State University where he teaches courses in social theory, globalization, social movement learning, and adult learning theories. He is the author of Social Movements, Civil Society, and Radical Adult Education, co-author of Radicalizing Learning: Adult Education for a Just World, and co-editor of Antonio Gramsci: A Pedagogy to Change the World.

  • Promoting Media Literacy Among Older People: A Systematic Review
    • Authors: Päivi Rasi, Hanna Vuojärvi, Susanna Rivinen
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
The aim of this study was to advance understanding of how to foster media literacy among older people. A systematic review was conducted of 40 empirical studies published between January 2005 and April 2019. The literature review provided information and practical implications for researchers, designers, and providers of media-literacy education for older people. Based on the review, it can be concluded that interventions aimed at fostering media literacy in older people need further development and creative enrichment in terms of aims, content, providers, recipients, and pedagogical approaches.

  • Learning for Sustainability: Considering Pathways to Transformation
    • Authors: Joanne M. Moyer, A. John Sinclair

Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
Social-ecological systems face increasing disruptions and challenges, many deriving from human actions, and learning is frequently touted as “the way out” for addressing them. Using a systematic review of 26 studies that span about 20 years and cover four continents, this article interrogates the link between learning, action, and societal transformation toward sustainability. Transformative learning theory provides the analytical framework. Studies indicated abundant instrumental learning outcomes, and substantial communicative learning, while personal transformation was less common. Individual, interpersonal, and collective sustainability action resulted from various kinds of learning, underscoring the important role that learning can play in shaping individual sustainability behavior. Instrumental learning, in particular, provided the skills and knowledge necessary for action. While study findings confirm the fundamental importance of learning, actions were largely individual and had lesser impact at the societal level.

  • Microcredit Provision, Lifelong Learning, and Productivity of Poor Women
           in Indonesian Villages

Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
This study aims to analyze the effect of lifelong, notably adult and informal, learning experiences on the business capability and productivity of poor women entrepreneurs in rural Indonesia. The measures of entrepreneurial ability of the research subjects were in terms of their engagement, as microcredit receivers, in adult learning processes through daily production and selling activities; this includes the relative earnings gained from their income generating activities. The data collected are those from 400 respondents randomly selected from microcredit receivers of Bina Artha microfinance institutes in Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia. The data analysis focused on examining the effect of adult learning variables in comparison to school attendance on the women entrepreneurs’ business capability. The findings showed that some forms of adult and informal learning experiences had stronger effect on the entrepreneurs’ business capability than the school attendance. In light of the findings, it is to suggest that microcredit providers arguably should provide relevant skills training to improve lifelong learning experiences of microcredit receivers. This recommends that microcredit providers should take into account the benefits of lifelong learning experiences of microcredit receivers as one of the most important criteria for granting loan extension.

  • Learning to Become Good Mothers: Immigrant Mothers as Adult Learners
    • Authors: Yidan Zhu
      First page: 377
Abstract: Adult Education Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
Immigrant mothers, who are socially constructed as an isolated group of people, are often excluded from the studies of adult learners. In adult education, few studies focus on immigrant mothers’ ways of learning, mothering, and knowing. Based on a critical ethnographical study, this article sheds lights on immigrant mothers’ learning in a foreign land. It unveils how immigrant mothers learn mothering skills and how their lifelong learning practice interacts with the ideology of mothering in contemporary neoliberal contexts. The data come from a 2-year critical ethnographic study that included 30 in-depth interviews with Chinese immigrant mothers in a Vancouver-based immigration settlement organization in Canada. The following five types of immigrant mothers’ lifelong learning practices are examined and analyzed: (a) learning parenting skills, (b) learning to find a job, (c) learning language, (d) learning to drive, and (e) learning to live a healthy lifestyle. This article argues that immigrant mothers’ lifelong learning practice constitutes a mechanism, one in which the ideology of mothering and immigrant mothers’ everyday learning and mothering deeply interact to reproduce race, gender, and class relations. This article concludes that there is a need to study immigrant mothers, as adult learners, and to reexamine knowledge systems, ideologies, and people’s different ways of knowing and learning in adult education.
