  • Asas da Florestania: languages and cultures at play in the forest-based
           citizenship literacy program in Brazil

    • Authors: Silvia Ramos Sollai
      Pages: 133 - 147
Abstract: This methodological article applies the Continua of Biliteracy (Hornberger, 1989; Hornberger & Skilton-Sylvester, 2000) onto the curriculum and human resources of Asas da Florestania Infantil, namely Asinhas, a preschool initiative with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognition for its startling approach to the Acre an multilingual setting in northwestern Brazil. Overseen, forest-dependent, Acre’s identity is a traditional and hybridculture melting pot with sustainable rubber tapping advocates, indigenous land claimers and Haitian refugees, where languages and literacy converge to legitimate the Brazilian linguistic and cultural diversity. Initially funded by national communication mogul Rede Globo and the World Bank, today, it also responds to municipal, state, and federal accountability. We concluded
that Asinhas’ recruitment of Educational Agents to promote meaningful forest-based content at an anthropological home visits approach is an outstanding decentralization and multilingual setting and curriculum acknowledgement, despite its population under representation and scaling-up limitations.

  • Integrated assessment in the Celpe-Bras exam and tasks of reading and
           writing

    • Authors: Kaiane Mendel, Juliana Roquele Schoffen
      Pages: 148 - 170
Abstract: The Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language for Foreigners (Celpe-Bras) aims to assess language proficiency  by integrating comprehension and production skills. Despite being a controversial issue, integrated assessment is in
accordance with the theoretical construct of the Celpe-Bras exam, based on a dialogical perspective of language. As such, this paper investigates how the Celpe-Bras exam presents the concept of integrated assessment in its public
documents, specifications and assessment parameters. Furthermore, it discusses how the analyzed tasks assess reading and writing. The results point to the need for a better description and operationalization of integrated assessment in
the exam, and demonstrate the importance of the task instruction for the integration of skills and to emphasize the complexity of comprehension assessment in this type of task. The reflections presented can contribute to the description of the comprehension and production assessment in the Celpe-Bras exam and to the promotion of new discussions on integrated tasks.

  • Description of the levels of performance in a Reading-writing task of
           Celpe-Bras

    • Authors: Gabrielle Rodrigues Sirianni, Juliana Roquele Schoffen
      Pages: 171 - 190
Abstract: This work aims to describe the levels of performance verified in a reading-writing task applied to students of Celpe-Bras Preparatory course. We used one task and a corpus of 22 texts and we described the levels of student performance,
transforming the general parameters of the exam into specific parameters for this task, and analyzing what each level presented in this task. The results of the study indicate that in more advanced levels there were no problems related to
the configuration of the interlocution and to the construction of the genre, and the selection and recontextualization of information in reading text were determinant in the difference between all the evaluated levels The analysis and the
description of the levels of performance accomplished in this work contribute to foment the discussion of the differences between the levels evaluated in the Written Part of Celpe-Bras.

  • Portuguese language as instrument of reception in Lomba do Pinheiro:
           reports of pedagogical practices

    • Authors: Graziela Hoerbe Andrighetti, Cristina Becker Lopes Perna, Martha Machado Porto
      Pages: 191 - 208
Abstract: The current international migratory flows bring a new reality to many Brazilian cities and point to the need for actions that allow the integration of the migratory population in our society. Understanding the offer of courses aimed at teaching the Portuguese language as an instrument of reception policy for immigrants and refugees, and aware of the demands for specific didactic materials aimed at teaching Portuguese as an Additional Language (hereinafter PAL) that meet this new reality in Brazil, we share in this article our classroom experiences with the teaching of Portuguese to a group of 30 Haitians, seeking to contribute to reflections about the teaching of Portuguese in this specific context. To do so, we describe the decisions taken along the course regarding the classes and didactic materials used, taking into account the profile of the students and the context in which they were inserted. Based on our reports, we hope to collaborate with teachers who are involved in the teaching of Portuguese for Immigrants and Refugeesin Brazilian contexts in which the migratory flow is a reality.

  • Fulbright English teaching assistants: joint preparation of classroom
activities and codeswitching in a practice community of the Languages
           without Borders Program

    • Authors: William Kirsch, Simone Sarmento
      Pages: 209 - 219
Abstract: This article discusses codeswitching in a community of practice generated by the Languages without Borders Program in a large public university in Southern Brazil. The corpus presented in this article consists of a synoptic chart with the description of 15 events involving at least one English Teaching Assistant (ETA) and has codeswitching as an integral feature, as well as the transcription ofone prototypical interactional event in which codeswitching happens. Ourinterpretation of the data suggests that (1) codeswitching is a central resource in these interactions, and that (2) these interactions seem to culminate in: (a) student teachers practicing and learning English and English-speaking culture from the ETAs, (b) ETAs practicing and learning Portuguese and Brazilian culture from the student teachers. In addition to that, codeswitching seems to be a style that demonstrates engagement in the community.

  • English language learning through a Facebook group: activities for
           developing oral skills

    • Authors: Cláudia Barbosa
      Pages: 220 - 233
Abstract: Social Networking Sites (SNSs), though not initially designed for educational purposes, have long had a presence in educational contexts. In particular, the potential of Facebook (FB) and its Closed Group feature as a tool for language learning has been analyzed by several studies, although most seem to limit their scope to the use of Facebook for developing reading and writing skills. This paper attempts to investigate potential complementary activities that can be performed in connection with a Facebook Closed Group, using freely accessible tools, to assist with the development of oral skills in an English learning setting at the primary school level. Selected tools have been assessed, tested, and integrated into a Facebook closed group, in the scope of the topic “English-speaking countries”.

  • Learning English in the elderly: an analysis of motivational factors and
           language learning strategies

    • Authors: Vítor Romário Monticelli Garcia
      Pages: 234 - 256
Abstract: This study investigates motivational factors and language learning strategies involved in the process of learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in the elderly. The taxonomy of strategies developed by Oxford (1990) is adopted, as well as discussions on motivation in language learning. Twenty-five (25) elderly students participated in this research. Three instruments were administered for data collection, (i) a placement test; (ii) a background questionnaire; (iii) and a translated version of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), proposed by Oxford (1990). Results identified 11 strategies used more frequently, most of them metacognitive strategies. Results also show that learning English, travelling, and socializing are motivational factors in this group. This paper may contribute to researchers and to English teachers and elderly students by shedding some light on features of EFL learning in the elderly regarding language strategies and motivational aspects.

  • Academic literacy in English and in Portuguese: a estudy of evaluatives
actividades proceeding of undergraduate disciplines in an American
institution and in a Brazilian federal one

    • Authors: Luciana Lorandi Honorato de Ornellas
      Pages: 257 - 278
Abstract: The paper analyses how academic literacy is promoted in academic writing assignments using genres. The context of the study is that of undergraduate disciplines in the field of Biological Sciences. The disciplines take place in an American institution and in a Brazilian federal one. The data were drawn from pedagogical and evaluative documents that were analysed by content analysis. The data collected from the American institution showed that genres are used as a vehicle to integrate knowledge, and also to
demonstrate information. Relating to national context, genres are used to demonstrate information. It can be concluded that, in the American institution, academic literacy occurs in an ideological way in the disciplines, since writing is developed making use of genres that are explored as a social practice. Nevertheless, in the Brazilian institution, academic literacy is developed in an autonomous way, due to the absence of the teaching of writing in the disciplines, probably because it is considered that
students already know how to write. In brief, this investigation intends to clarify academic literacy practices in different academic contexts in order to bring insight to other researchers and practitioners on how this issue has been dealt with, and what are the strengths and the weaknesses of such practices.

  • The internationalization of IFSUL and the relevance of a foreign language
for the academic and scientific development of the institution

    • Authors: Marlon Machado Oliveira Rio
      Pages: 279 - 298
Abstract: Preparing students for the ongoing process of internationalization of Education is a complex task, since both technologies and teaching practices change, becoming increasingly global and less specific to a sole culture. An institution that previously delimited and carried out its research in its own must now establish relationships and seek partnerships with institutions of higher education for the preparation, execution and collection of research data. Due to this reality, the objective of this work, is to present a study about the Federal Institute in the South of Rio Grande do Sul - IFSUL, an  institution that has made countless efforts and has been in constant movement so that the internationalization process is established in a productive way. The work of IFSUL in projects of the federal government is analyzed, as well as the linguistic and pedagogical training of its teachers regarding the initiatives taken by the Institution in the global scenario. The internationalization process is investigated by the principles presented by Green (2005), and suggestions are made so that the constant work on this topic is more and more satisfactory.

  • A conceptual blending analysis of a metaphorical advertisement:
           applications in elt

    • Authors: Elisa Mattos de Sá
      Pages: 299 - 316
Abstract: Advances in Cognitive Linguistics have focused on the centrality of meaning and conceptual structure in human language (Evans & Green, 2006; Geeraerts, 2006), placing phenomena such as metaphor as central to human cognition (Lakoff, 2006; Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). This paper analyzes the process of meaning construction of a metaphorical print advertisement in which cognitive operations of conceptual integration (cf. Fauconnier & Turner, 2002) can be mapped through the interplay between verbal and nonverbal language. Seeing that adverts can provide learners with real-life communicative opportunities for language development due to their
up-to-date language, cultural-bound content, and creative discourse techniques (Mishan, 2005; Picken, 2000; 1999), this paper additionally provides four pedagogical applications of the chosen advertisement in English Language Teaching, drawing on the principles of the theoretical
      framework presented.

  • Analysis of the cultural elements present in a textbook for teaching
           English to young people

    • Authors: Laura Braghini Zampieri, Ana Cristina Biondo Salomão
      Pages: 317 - 334
Abstract: Nowadays, a great part of English language teaching is based on textbooks, mainly those produced by large publishing companies and distributed worldwide. Bearing in mind that teachers constantly interact in the classroom with the way a textbook represents its view of culture, there should be a critical stance in its implementation. In this article, we analyze how culture is treated in a textbook for teenagers, Got it! Starter (2011), generally used for beginners in language schools, based on contemporary theoretical underpinnings of culture and interculturality in foreign language classrooms. The results indicate the need of critical analysis from the teacher on the cultural products and practices presented and of transgression strategies in the classroom in order to develop intercultural critical skills through reflection about the content, not thoughtless and passive acceptance.

Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to investigate Iranian English teachers' beliefs about how to teach English grammar. For this purpose,forty-three teachers, eighteen females and twenty-five maleteachers from Kermanshah, Iran, participated in this study. To gather data in the studies about teacher beliefs, MacDonald Badger & White, (2001) questionnaire was used (TBQ). The questionnaire used for this study contained close-ended sections that required teachers to respond to statements on a five point Likert scale- as well as open-ended questions that invited teachers to describe or comment on the issue in details. Findingsof the study indicated the extent to which
some of these teachers’ beliefs became an influential factor in their teaching and actually their stated pedagogical decisions. Consistent with the findings from previous research studies, this study indicates that teachers do possess a vast array of complex beliefs about pedagogical issues (e.g. importance of grammar) including beliefs about students (e.g. their ability to understand
grammar) and classroom practices (i.e. approaches to grammar teaching). It was clear from the teachers’ responses to thequestionnairethat their pedagogic beliefs represented an interconnected system in which some beliefs were central. These core beliefs were seen to influence other less
strongly held beliefs. One strong core belief that almost all teachers shared was that grammar instruction was not only necessary but it should form a substantial part of the curriculum. Grammar was regarded by the teachers as a declarative set of facts to be learnt. Moreover, grammar instruction was seen to entail the explanation of grammar rules.
